Native Americans fished and built villages on its shores. Later, European settlers looked to the sea for sustenance and, eventually trade. Ships built on the banks of the Kennebunk River sailed around the world, carrying supplies and goods from Maine and bringing home exotic treasures and other necessities. One constant has been fishing, with men and women making a living off the bounty of the sea, including native lobsters.

Later, hotels and guest houses sprang up in the area, with east coast visitors coming up for the summer to enjoy the ocean breezes, so very different from their lives in the city. In the past 200 hundred years, shipbuilding faded away, fashions changed, but one thing has remained the same: Peopleâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s love of the sea. Today, residents and visitors alike enjoy spending time on the beaches and out on the water itself, with deep sea fishing, kayaking, sailing tours, standup paddle boarding and more. Local restaurants serve lobster and other treasures of the sea. And each day, lobstermen and women go out on their boats to bring in more. This year, the state of Maine celebrates its 200th anniversary as a state (and the town of Kennebunk does as well). So come, celebrate with us, walk in the steps of history, in our community by the sea.

Walker’s Point

The summer home of the late President George H.W. Bush and Barbara, Walker’s Point has been visited by presidents, foreign heads of state and celebrities alike over the years. More importantly, though, it has been a haven for generations of Bush family members, who have enjoyed idyllic summer days away from the pressures of the outside world. Walker’s Point is not open to the public, but you can drive by or stop briefly at the scenic parking overlook to snap a quick picture. Vehicles may only stop in the designated parking area; stopping on the road is not permitted. To get to Walker’s Point, take Ocean

Avenue from Dock Square for photo approximately two miles. The ride is beautiful in and of itself, with the Atlantic crashing against the rocks along the right side of the road. Just before you reach Walker’s Point you’ll see the special overlook spot (please obey the rules posted on the sign) on the right. Also overlooking the house and on the right is the Anchor to Windward, the town’s special tribute to “41” installed in 2009.

Signature events include Rock the Dock, the Pirate Pub Crawl, Castaway Cove for Kids, the Sailors & Sirens 5K, the River Lights Boat Parade and the Blessing of the Fleet. Maine has more than 5,000 miles of coastline, and some of the most beautiful beaches in the entire state can be found here in the Kennebunks. Whether you’re a family looking to set up for that perfectly relaxing day at the beach or a surfer hoping to catch the ultimate wave, the beaches in Kennebunk and Kennebunkport offer some of the best fun in the sun. Kennebunk Beach: Mother’s, Middle & Gooch’s (Beach Avenue) These long, wide sandy beaches (and even rocky Middle Beach) are the perfect place to walk, sun yourself, play in the surf, look for sea treasures or just enjoy the sight of the waves rolling onto shore. There’s no better place to be on July 4, when fireworks explode overhead in a myriad of glittering lights. There are lifeguards and porta-potties at both Gooch’s Beach and Mother’s Beach from July through Labor Day. Mother’s Beach has a playground open to the public. While visitors are welcome at these beaches, a permit to park at the beach is required. Non-resident daily ($25), weekly ($100) and seasonal ($200) passes are easily available at the three parking kiosks and at the Kennebunk Town Hall. Goose Rocks Beach (King’s Highway, off Route 9, north of Cape Porpoise) At three miles long, Goose Rocks Beach is a favorite with walkers as well as the sand pail set. The beach is wide, smooth, sandy and affords wonderful views of Eastern Goose Rocks and Timber Island, just off the coast. Parking permits are required ($25/$100/$200; note that Kennebunk permits cannot be used here) and are available at the Kennebunkport Police Station, Town Hall and the Goose Rocks General Store. For information, call the police station at (207) 967-2454. Colony Beach (off Ocean Avenue, near the Colony Hotel in Kennebunkport) This beach (also known as Arundel Beach) is much appreciated by those who love to scramble on its rocks and watch the surf dash the shore. No parking permit is needed. Beach Wheelchairs: The Kennebunks have two beach wheelchairs for public use! Both are available to rent for a small fee through the towns’ recreation departments, Kennebunk Rec (207604-1335) and Kennebunkport Parks & Recreation (207-967-4304). Biking / Hiking Ocean Avenue and Cape Porpoise, Kennebunkport (8 miles): Definitely bring your camera on this ride. Head out of Dock Square on Ocean Avenue with the water on your right. You will be riding parallel to the Kennebunk River. Ocean Avenue is heavily traveled so families with young children may want to take another route. Bear right at the Wildes District Fire Station and stay on Wildes District Road all the way into Cape Porpoise. When you have had your fill of lobster, hop on your bike and backtrack your route into town. Goose Rocks Beach, Kennebunkport (11 miles): From Dock Square take North Street to Arundel Road. Follow Arundel Road past the horse farm and take a right on to Goose Rocks Road. Ride Goose Rocks Road to the end and go straight across Route 9. At the end of Dyke Road you will find the pristine Goose Rocks Beach. This ideal family destination usually has very limited parking, but you wonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have that problem with a bike. This also happens to be the ride with the least amount of traffic. When itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s time to return, follow the same roads back to town. Kennebunk Beach, Kennebunk (7 miles): From Dock Square go over the bridge to the traffic light and take a left 14 | gokennebunks.com

onto Beach Avenue. Kennebunk Beach is now straight ahead about 1 mile. Follow the ocean for the next 2 miles. Where the road heads away from the ocean you will see Great Hill Road on the left. This dead-end road borders the Mousam River. After you turn around, take a left onto Boothby Road. This connects to Route 9 and will bring you back into the Port. This ride is good for adults and parents with children over 9 years old. Bridle Path, Kennebunk: Flat dirt path about two miles long that parallels the Mousam River and the marshes in Kennebunk. This is an excellent ride for beginners and families. Park at Sea Road School on Sea Road for access. Franciscan Monastery, Kennebunk Pass through the stone gate of the Franciscan Monastery and you enter a gracious English park with its sweeping lawns, simple gardens, the magnificent Our Lady of Lourdes grotto, and other statues and shrines. Bike riding is not allowed on the Monastery grounds. On foot, follow the paved path into the woods to see more statues and views of Kennebunkport across the Kennebunk River. Thousands come to enjoy these peaceful and expansive grounds every year. Open between sunrise and sunset, everybody is welcome to visit the

Biking / Hiking chapel, to walk the grounds, or to sit in contemplation or prayer on one of the many benches on the grounds. Kennebunkport Conservation Trust, Gravelly Brook Road: Trails vary in length, width, topography and use. Some are conducive to bird watching and viewing wildlife, others for hiking, biking, snowshoeing, and cross-country skiing. kport trust.org. Eastern Trail: The Eastern Trail, a 65-mile section of the East Coast Greenway stretching from Kittery to South Portland, has two entrances: Kennebunk Elementary School off Alewive Road, and Limerick Road in Arundel. The trail is perfect for walking and cycling as well as snowshoeing and cross-country skiing. The trail, which is approximately 10 feet wide, is also dog-friendly. easterntrail.org. Kennebunk Land Trust: The Kennebunk Land Trust offers scenic spots for walking, hiking and riding. kennebunklandtrust.org. Wonderbrook Park, Kennebunk Muddy, hilly, technical loops of interconnected trails. They are short but fun and

include some bridge and log crossings. This is best combined with a road ride because of the short distance. Located at 16 Plummer Lane, off Summer Street. Trails of Hope Woods Located behind Hope Cemetery in Downtown Kennebunk near the junction of Summer Street and Main Street. Enjoy about 2 miles of well-marked trails through open and wooded areas and alongside Scotchman’s Brook. Hope Woods is well known for its many bird species. Access the trails through Hope Cemetery (Barnard Lane), at Fletcher Street (across from Mechanic Street), Wood Pond Lane (in cul de sac), or Woodhaven Drive (near intersection with Longwood). hopecemetery kennebunk.com/woods. Welch Woods, Arundel A beautiful, gentle half-mile loop through a peaceful forest with lovely ferns along the way. Trail crosses a small brook and leads to a clearing by the shore of the Kennebunk River. Rest a while on one of the benches built by the local Scout troop. Enjoy the serenity of the tidal marsh, and the gentle flow of the river. The perfect place for a picnic and some relaxation. Small off-road parking located just east of 227 River Road, Arundel.

surfing. Try your hand at deep sea fishing or go out on a real lobster boat and learn how to pull a trap in. You can enjoy a smooth sunset sail with a bottle of wine, or take a rollicking ride over the waves on a RIB boat. And here in the Kennebunks you’ll find the only whale watch tours between Portsmouth and Portland, where you can take in the majesty of whales breaching out at sea.

PARK IT VISITOR PARKING Kennebunkport: Parking is available in Dock Square area in the (paid) municipal lot behind Alisson’s Restaurant and in the (free) lot at the North Street Fire Station, a short walk from Dock Square. RVs are welcome at the Seashore Trolley Museum in Kennebunkport for $35 (regular admission). No overnight parking. Kennebunk: Paid parking is available behind The Pilot House and Lower Village Marketplace. On-street parking is allowed as marked by signs. In downtown Kennebunk, parking is allowed in the municipal lots next to the Kennebunk Inn.

TOUR BUS PARKING Motorcoach passengers must be dropped off at the designated location on Cross Street, in Dock Square, Kennebunkport. The Chamber asks tour companies to call ahead of time at (207) 967-0857 so we can greet your bus! While passengers are enjoying their time here, bus drivers are welcome to park at the Seashore Trolley Museum, 195 Log Cabin Road in Kennebunkport, and at the Franciscan Monastery, 28 Beach Ave., Kennebunk. Paid tour bus parking is available at Performance Marine, located behind The Pilot House.

“the three-hour tour” You’ve only got the afternoon to “experience the Kennebunks,” so what do you do? Here’s our favorite three-hour tour:

Drive along Beach Avenue from Cooper’s Corner and take in the Kennebunk beaches, Gooch’s, Middle and Mother’s. Feeling adventurous? Park (legally) and get out and sink your toes into the sand, or take a swing at the playground on Mother’s Beach. Then, dust off the sand, head back to the car and loop around in front of KBIA and drive back to Lower Village/Dock Square. (You can take in much the same sights – with narration! – on a 45-minute Intown Trolley tour.)

Grab a lobster roll to go (every eatery makes one!) and a whoopie pie. Nothing says “taste of Maine” like those two. If you’re feeling adventurous, wash it down with a bottle of Moxie.

Better yet, do a tasting at Kennebunkport Brewing Co., the birthplace of Shipyard Ale, then wander next door to Honeymaker Meadworks for mead (think wine with honey) sampling. Steps away is Batson River Brewing & Distilling, and Sweetgrass Winery & Distillery up the hill.

In Maine, we love our dogs, and many establishments welcome them. There are dog-friendly inns and eateries, dog parks and, of course, opportunities to enjoy the beautiful beaches with your four-legged friends. KENNEBUNKPORT • At Goose Rocks Beach, dogs are allowed on the beach before 8 a.m. and after 6 p.m. from June 15 to Sept. 15. They are allowed on the beach all day the rest of the year. Leash laws apply. ARUNDEL • Dogs are permitted on the Eastern Trail, but must be kept on leash during certain sections.

KENNEBUNK • In Kennebunk, dogs are allowed on the beaches all day from Labor Day to June 15, and before 9 a.m. and after 5 p.m. from June 15 to Labor Day. Owners have their dogs under voice control at all times. • A fenced-in dog park is available on Sea Road, next to the recycling center, in Kennebunk. It is free and open to the public year-round. • Dogs are permitted on the Eastern Trail in Kennebunk, but must be kept on leash during certain sections. Owners must pick up and remove dog waste.

History White Columns Kennebunkport The First Families Kennebunkport Museum, at White Columns in the heart of Kennebunkport, offers visitors a chance to tour an 1853 Greek Revival home and view exhibitions covering two centuries of local history, from sea captains to presidents. Guided tours present stories and artifacts from the lives of Charles and Celia Perkins, whose fortunes were connected to the thriving shipbuilding era of Kennebunkport. The museum also features sea captains and shipbuilders to rusticators to Kennebunkport’s most famous summer resident, late President George H.W. Bush and First Lady Barbara Bush and their family. Arundel history In the mid-1600s, Arundel’s first settlers kept close to the coastline both for easy access to the ocean and to escape from local Native Americans. The settlers finally abandoned the settlement in the late 1600s and did not return until around 1720 when relations with Native Americans improved. The new settlement, named Arundel, grew along the Kennebunk River. After 1750, people began to settle west of what is now Route 1 and started farming the rest of Arundel. Around 1800, as the religious climate changed, small churches and meeting houses served to draw the local people together. Although those small churches have disappeared, several of the early farms and a few of the farmhouses still exist today. When Arundel’s secession from Kennebunkport became official in 1916, it lost its direct connection with the coast and remained a rural town composed primarily of farms. Today, Arundel is one of the fastest-growing towns in the state, and is home to both industry and local businesses, while maintaining much of its rural character. — Arundel Historical Society

History Brick Store Museum, Kennebunk Brick Store Museum, Kennebunk: In 1936, in the middle of the Great Depression, Edith Cleaves Barry opened the Brick Store Museum on Main Street in Kennebunk. This town was recognized nationally for its shipbuilding prowess in the 19th century, and by the early 20th century it turned into a nationwide tourist and artist mecca. Though the town preserved its small-town charm, it consistently spearheaded trends on a national level. Edith Barry inherited a brick general store building, built in 1825, from her uncle, William Barry, in the early 1930s, and knew immediately that she would open a museum dedicated to the story of this area. When the Brick Store Museum opened in 1936, it became one of only 10 museums in the entire country to open between the Great Depression

and World War II. Edith Barry funded the museum with her own money and invested her time and hard work for the rest of her life. The Museum absorbed four other buildings on the block, all built between 1810 and 1860, to house its collection of over 70,000 artifacts relating to the culture of the Kennebunks. Today, the museum is open six days a week, offering exhibitions, tours, research and programs year-round. Admission is $7, $6 for seniors, $20 per family ($10 for Family Passes on weekends).
