THE CUBE

Temporary pavilion for London’s Serpentine Gallery

Isometric view of the cube (the interaction of square and triangle)

Concept - To make the connection with the sky by creating the opening structures. Works - Introduces the two geogramety shapes by creating simple squareshapes. - The transparency quality provides the complexity within the simplicity and three-dimensional spatial quality. - Achieve the movement quality through repetition patterns.

INSPIRATION Architect : Sou Fujimoto (Japanese Architect) - The repetition geometry provokes the interaction with nature and people in diverse ways. - The transparency quality provides the complexity within the simplicity.

ITERATIONS (without site)

connection between earth and sky

- The model provides the movement from the earth to the sky. - The movements within the box gives the intention of uncertainty movement . - When it goes out of the box, it achieves the clarity and gives the free directions.

tentative

unpredictable

- The model gives the idea of uncertainty and nature of explosion. - It responds the un-safety conditions of the site itself. -It demonstrates the changes from risky conditions to the safety conditions when it comes to center.

- The model provides the unstable conditions of the site. - It lacks the connection with the site. -However, it explores the possibility of the site activities indirectly, more active in the Polk street.

View from Larkin Street

- This gesture model responds to the flow of the building movement. - Connection between the street conditions of Larkin street and Polk street. - Exploring the sites according to the hierarchy by expressing the layers in the proposal gesture model. - This community is a place that can bring different levels of people as a whole.

GESTURE MODEL 2

Isometric view (from Cedar and Larkin Street)

View from Polk Street

- The gesture porvokes the way of creating dynamic and sluggish conditions between two Polk and Larkin Streets. - This model has the same language with my first gesture model, which has the primary idea of expressing the street activities. - The triangle shapes between the upper and lower part of the model create the center point of transition of the contrasting nature of the site.

GESTURE MODEL 3

- In this gesture, I try to explore street dynamic conditions with curve lines instead of rigid lines. -By using curve lines, the gesture provokes the nature of softness within the dynamic condition that can change the image of the alley.

Weaknesses - In the gesture models 1,2 and 3, my respond about the unsafe condition of the alley is vague within the site. -Even though the gestures have the quality of delivering the same language about street activities of the alley, it still doesn’t get the concept of transforming the alley.

GESTURE MODEL 4

View fro Polk Street

-In the previous gestures, my models are pointing out to the homeless shelter, which is on the other side of the Polk Street, to give the idea of risky and active condition of Polk street by contrasting with the calm condition of the Larkin street, which is not a nice concept to bring up. -In this model, the community center responds directly to the height of the building from the other side of the Cedar Street. The idea is that to embrace the whole alley as the community center.

-In this model I try to connect the highest building from the side to Polk Street to express the idea of connecting both side of the alley, which point out the communication between people. Weaknesses -It lacks the idea of activating the alley while it try to connect the both side of the alley.

- After questioning myself about activating the alley, I decided to connect the high building within the whole alley. - That gives me the sense of providing the transparency roofing system to activate the activities within the alley without concerning about rain and wind. - The paths of the roof creates both people’s circulation and density of the alley. - The curvilinear shapes of the gesture model on the rectilinear site provides the contrast quality of the community center and attracts people’s eyes as a land mark within the alley.
