OBJECTIVES ²

To explore and develop small-scaled environmental installation design on an individual basis

²

To design and install full-size construction on the selected site (outside of the Architecture Department) as a group

²

The installation needs to respond to the unique context of site and climatic conditions

SITE PROPOSAL ²

²

²

²

To respond to the curvilinear shaped wall with rectilinear shaped installation to make the contrast between curvilinear and rectilinear shapes. To make some weaving patterns to connect between the wall and our installation. To cast the shadow of the sun during the day to get the magical aspects. To support the intimate space for people. 4

INDIVIDUAL SMALL SCALE MODEL I ²

²

²

²

Needs to go through the building to feel the spaces (spaces within a space, interlocking space). The rectilinear shape makes the contract of the curvilinear shaped wall, and the vertical columns respond the vertical lines on the wall. The solid wall covers the rest of the building and attract the people to come into and look at what is inside the building. Parabola shaped roof responds the curvilinear shaped wall and promotes the intimate space. 6

INDIVIDUAL SMALL SCALE MODEL II ²

²

²

The seating space provides the intimate space by welcoming everyone to take a rest while responding the curvilinear wall. The curve shaped roof castes the shadow of the trapezoid roof like structure. The arch shaped wall makes the connection between the roof and curvilinear site.

7

INDIVIDUAL SMALL SCALE MODEL III ²

²

²

²

Needs to go inside of the building to feel the intimate space and spaces within a space. The rectilinear welcoming space responds to the vertical lines on the curvilinear wall. The arch shaped roof responds the curvilinear site and the square base responds to the grid on the ground and the 3/4” bolt holes on the wall. The glass wall responds the wind and the neighborhood site with glass windows.

8

INDIVIDUAL SMALL SCALE MODEL IV ²

²

²

The seating space provides the intimate space while responding the curvilinear wall. The rectangular shaped columns provide as the window by responding the rectangular shaped glass windows from adjacent site. The arch shaped entrance does as the welcoming space and makes the connection between the site, curvilinear part of the roof and the flat ground.

INSPIRATION

INSPIRATION ²

The rectangular shaped small scale models – to make the contract for the curvilinear wall and to respond adjacent site with rectangular glass windows.

²

The rope, the chair and sculpture with weaving pattern – to connect between each PVC pipe to make pattern for wall and seating spaces.

11

MATERIALS

12

INSTALLATION PROCESS Cutting PVC pipes into small pieces (2 feet each)

13

INSTALLATION PROCESS Cleaning the site

14

INSTALLATION PROCESS Connecting PVC pipes each other by using PVC connectors

15

INSTALLATION PROCESS Square shaped cubes - for seating spaces that promote intimate space

16

INSTALLATION PROCESS The columns respond to the vertical lines on the wall, and the rectangular shapes and square shapes responds to the grid on the wall and ground.

17

INSTALLATION PROCESS Weaving in progress (trying to made the wall with weaving patterns)

18

INSTALLATION PROCESS Finalize construction and put the fabrics to get the different feeling between the solid walls and weaving pattern walls.

19

SPATIAL EXPERIENCES ²

The small space behind the curtain evokes to feel the contract of solid wall with vertical lines and the complex weaving patterns.

²

The fabric from above makes the connection between the two separate constructions into one construction.

²

The two seating spaces evoke the welcoming space and comfortable, intimate space.

STRENGTHS AND WEAKNESSES Strengths: ²  ²  ²  ²  ²  ²

Strong and indestructible frames that can withstand the weather Low cost construction Respond to the site with contrast idea but follow the patterns from the wall (vertical lines, bolt holes), the grid on the ground and adjacent site with glass windows Demonstrate hierarchy with ropes and PVC pipes Demonstrate complexity (the weaving pattern) within simplicity ( the wall, rectangle wall and curtain) Evoke peacefulness because of natural color.

Weaknesses: ²  ²  ²

Lacking complexity according to the whole installation Use all simple rectangular shape Demonstration of the spatial functions 21

NARRATIVE While I was walking to the Batmale Hall from the library, I saw the empty courtyard with nothing to sit nor to relax under the gleaming sun. Looking at the lonely courtyard I wish I can create something that will help relax the visitors. An intimate space for relaxation. I choose a place in random which was somehow destined to be mine to create, to construct and to dream. I laid down, facing the sky and I begin to oat into the cloud. I look down at the site with some curvilinear shapes, triangle shapes and wavy shapes that invited me to come and look. Therefore I came and looked around the intimate spaces they offered. However my eyes were full of curve shapes that responded to the curvilinear walls very well. Afterwards, I wanted to see the contract intimate space installation instead of curvilinear shapes that responded curvilinear wall. Eventually, I got the idea of doing the rectilinear frames that made the contract of the site to respond. After that I was thinking about the weaving pattern that made people to feel the complexity within the simplicity site. In my dream, I was doing the rectangle frames by weaving with the ropes to connect each other and perform as the wall. After installation on my own, I went into my installation and I felt that the complexity between two simplicity wall. Moreover, when I sat on the seating space, I felt peacefulness and comfort at the same time. When I woke up, I saw the construction that I would like to build and this ďŹ nally was our construction project that we were working on. 22

REFLECTION Transforming individual works into group works made me to learn how to work with other. From doing small scale model to installing full scale constructions with a group made the bond between friendships closer and I learned a lot of dos and don’ts from this group installation. Because of the helps form Gena, Josephine, Jessica and Ben, I learnt a lot about construction methods, how to calculate the materials we need and so on, throughout the process of our installation. Besides, I felt that being an architect is not a easy thing but we could find fun and precious memories within each other. I also thought architects are closer each other rather than other technicians because we couldn’t stand alone without others helps. Therefore, I felt that I can regard my colleagues form this class as my second family. Another fact is that when thinking about the design, we need to think to respond the environment (in the same way or different way), the weather, the attractiveness, and the last, to get the full intention from others. Even though I didn’t fully satisfy with our installation, I was proud that we, as a group overcame our dramas and showed something to others as the final result. I had heard that the dramas with a group usually got more experience than other groups and they learnt everything from this experiences to go forwards in the future. Overall, I got the precious moments and memories from this installation project. 23

CONCLUSION All in all, I learnt a lot from the second half of the semester from design studio I, and I knew how should I respond the environment accordingly. Besides, I learnt how to work together with other people as a team and how to appreciate others ideas. I want to thank to my professor, Jerry Lum, for giving me such a precious experience, and my colleagues and team-mates for supporting me through out semester especially in the ďŹ nal project. I am sure that I will apply these experiences to my next studio classes and I will try my best to pursuit my goals in my future.

Thank You!!
