Detroit Riverfront Design Competition

1. Existing Jefferson Ave. Traffic

2. Jefferson Ave. Traffic (2 Surface Lanes) International Traffic (Underground)

3. Hart Plaza covers the international traffic and moves closer to Downtown

Teammate:

Mary Lancaster

Location:

Hart Plaza Detroit, MI

Year:

2012

Concept Description: One of the issues we focused on was the barrier created by Jefferson Ave. Between downtown Detroit and Hart Plaza. Our solution was to bring the plaza closer to the city by reducing surface traffic and to keep the heavier traffic for the Canada/USA International Tunnel under a new portion of the plaza. -Provide wetlands near the existing dodge fountain. These wetlands would filter runoff from the city, harbor wildlife & draw citizens toward the often neglected natural elements of the river. •

To extend the Woodward corridor through the park to a scenic overlook above the wetlands and the Detroit River.

Replace the existing customs center at the Canada/ USA Tunnel entrance.

Provide locations for vendors during busy hours of the day and public/private events.

Mary and I had dedicated countless hours of research and design to this competition, and I believe it was good solution to the issues facing Hart Plaza and downtown Detroit. Even though we didn’t receive any recognition for this project it was a great experience

4. Natural ventilation and Light is provided to the underground roadway.
