// Recreational Power Plant

[Graduate]

This is a thesis project regarding global energy draining situation and a possible architectural solution as a converter that turns energy consumption into a process of power generation. This project is trying to respond to the awareness of the energy crisis and design an potentil answer to it. This complex project is aimming to create a mediation between the consumption from recreational activities and the global trend of saving the limited energy resource with the use of new technologies that can turn natural and body energy which we disregard in daily modern life. This complex bring the originally merely consuming behviors of nowaday people into the a system where consuming is also contributing.

[ Drive ] We are facing a severe problem of population explosion. The increase of people on the planet is so fast that the whole world is starting to worry about the consequence this situation might result in. According to the report from U.S. Census Bureau, world population has rapidly increased in the past two hundred years from one billion people in nineteen century to seven billion in present. In order to sustain the lives of this huge population, more energy is consumed. However, we only have limited amount of our main energy resource preservation, fossil fuel, and we have already pased the production peak and will soon use it up. Massive use of fossil also leads to disasterous chain effects. Greenhouse gas causes global warming, which results in Glacier Meltdown. Then Sea Level Rises and global mass redistributes. The redistribution of the water mass from the melted glacier will even make the global Axis Shift.

[ Concept ] As the economic grows, people started to have a better financial condition and so has their life style been changed. People started to pay more attention on their recreational life besides earning their living. According to a research, the percentage of total personal consumption has increased from 5.6% to 8.7%. Total recreation expenditure has increased from $17,700,000,000 in 1959 to $756,300,000,000 in 2005. People do not only eat and drink just for basic physical needs. They start to intake excessive amount of resources just for pleasure and pay money to use up the extra calories they gain. With the new technology, we are now able to use wasted body energy to generate pwoer. Therefore, we can transform the original one-way consumption into a Reciprocal power generation system.

[ Site search ] The design sets off from locating a site where most likely to contain the maximum amount of wasted body energy. Thus, a methodology is applied in the wasted-energy-concentrated site locating process ― starting in Manhattan, New York, one of the world’s biggest tourist attractions famous for its diverse and rich night lives consisting of bars and clubs, map out the suitable site for a recreational power plant by using the distribution of bars in New York as reference. After analyzing the district bar/club density, it is found that District 2 has the Highest Density of bars and clubs among the 12 districts in Manhattan. Then, another research is conducted using subway stations as the evaluting center and 5-minutes walk as the research radius. The goal of this research is to find out the area where is most accessible with the convience of New York mass transportation.

[ Site ] Narrowed down to District 2, the project site seeking process heads towards the west to approach Hudson River in order to obtain more power from the nature resources in addition to reclaiming wasted human energy. The lot next to High Line serves as a perfect link between the area with high bar density and the Hudson River. The High Line has become one of the most famous tourist attractions and a new spot where people in lower west Manhattan or visitors from other places relax and wander. The Westside Highway and the jogging path along the river bank also contain a lot of potential energy source from the passing through of vehicles and the jogging path users. Moreover, the relatively low height of the surrounding buildings also makes obtaining solar power possible.

[ Program ] The activities accommodated in the power plant are based recreation-based in order to reclaim the energy people waste the most. Determined programs are broken down into a chart to analysze the energy that can be obtained.

[ Design ] Get rid of the trash truck lot across Westside highway from the site for the out-reaching programs in order to utilize the current and bouyancy of the Hudson River. Extend the linear neighborhood pattern as MAYA hair dynamic base to create a curved spactial frame that holds both programs on the site and Hudson River and the connection between them.

[ View from Hudson River ] Floating arena and cinemas genertate power when they rotate the wheels on the sliding tracks underneath Hudson River by sinking adn floating with the change of audience live loads along . All the circulation from Highline to the river deck are paved with power panel so pedestrians can generate energy by walking throughout the profect.

// Reconciliation Hotel

[Graduate]

This is a studio aimming to build a hotel at Atlantic Yard, Brooklyn, based on neurology reseach. This project is inspired by the neural transmission of outter stimuli to the brain. The neural system tansmit stimuli back and forth through electrical exchange among axons and neurons, so we can receive information and respond. There is a intriguing phase in the transmission where the eletrical exchange has to “jump” over the synaptic cleft without passing through any medium. This “cleft” became the main idea of the hotel, which accommodates community class, gym, shopping center, X-gme field and swimming pool with public access hoping to reconcile the conflict between the neighborhood and the developer by benefiting the surrounding residents with the hotel’s public facilities.

[ Drive ] There is a severe conflict between the city goverment and the residents on the surrounding plans of the Brooklyn Arena because of the use of eminent domain, which unwillingly took the residents’ property. The revealed plan does not satisfy the residents financially or aesthetically. The residents are forced to leave their home with little compensation when the developers will earn multi-million dollars. And the design of the whole complex project is also considered not blending into the neighborhood.

[ Concept ] According to the neurology system research for the studio, the mechanic of our neural system is based on ion exchange between neurons through synapses, which connect neurons together into the whole neural system. However, the synapes are not literally connected. There is a tiny gap between synapes called “synaptic cleft”. Therefore, when stimuli are sensed from receptors, ions have to travel through the whole neural system to the brain by “junping” from synapse to synapse over the cleft. The cleft is the most appealing outcome of the research. It does not only plays a essential role of the whole system, but also represent the eletric flow by revealing the ion exchange from rest enclosed neural system. This inspired the Activity Gap concept of blending new programs that spatially connect surrounding attractions and expose the energy and socially benifit the community to soothe the conflicts between the residents and developer and goverment into the hotel project.

// Shelter Facade

[Graduate]

This is the result of first semester elective of MAYA. The goal of this elective is to create a spatial element. This project is a facade that can swell and bend to become a shelter that block either rain or sun. However, when the shetler is not serving as a shelter, it become an outter layer of buildings without blocking the view of people in side the buildings.

[ Technique ] using maya attractor to create the gradual transformation accordding to the distance between the units and the attractor. The inflating of each units and bending degree of each row is also distanceconstrained to the attractor.

// Digital Fabrication

[Graduate]

This degital fabricated panel is made with the use of Rhino, Grasshopper and RhinoCAM. The goal of this elective is to understand the logic of Grasshopper and become proficient in the integration of Rhino and its plug-ins to. Fmiliarizing students w the fabrication process by going through the RhinoCAM set-ups and seeing how manipulations of the sizes of the drillers, depths drillers r going and paths drillers go along can make a difference on the result.

[ Grasshopper ] This equation creates a undulating surface as the first layer and then generates a pattern based on Delency mesh. Also, vectors and attractor point are used to shift the original triangles. The shifted triangles are then carved off from the first undulating surface.

Therefore, the concept of the residential design ─ a dancing ribbon ─ was inspired by the client’s profession. This ribbon does not only define the spaces but also serve as cabinets for storage. Some furnitures are even coordinated into the ribbon so the client can do her daily stretch and prctice.

The idea of a transitional tunnel is conceived to brings people into the cinema from the shopping center below. Deconstructed elements of the Vieshow cinema logo in the tunnel transform from only lines into carved-lined plank to bring people into the cinemas.
