Are You Seeing Red Strawberry season is coming to the area in about two weeks (mid April). Make a point to visit one of the many strawberry farms in the area and by doing so you will support local farmers, that in turn keeps your money in the area you live. One farm is Kildee Farms in Ramseur. Strawberry farmer Michael Beal of Kildee Farms in Ramseur stated, “Had several calls already asking about the strawberries and how they faired through the cold weather over the past couple of days at the end of March. My son Robert and myself had a few long and sleepless nights but the report is good. The strawberries look great and we're on track to a sweet strawberry season. We look forward to seeing you all soon. Season looks to be @ mid April.” Kildee Farms has had a long history of years for providing some of the best picking fields and sweet strawberries. You can find Kildee Farms at 936 Kildee Church Road in Ramseur which is off Parks Crossroads Church Rd not far from Hwy 64 near intersection close to Captian Toms Seafood. You can Pick Your Own or get Pre Picked. I still remember the memories of me and my grandmother picking in the fields. (Of course you have a taste a few along the way.. hahaha). Not only can you get great fresh produce you can create memories with your kids and grandkids. In past years they have fresh vegetables, bedding plants and hanging baskets. Their normal hours are 8am to 7pm (but varies due to picking volume in that day). Give them a call at 919-742-5102.
BREAKING NEWS:
GOD’S NOT
DEAD!!
Yes that would have been the headline back when the tomb was found empty. I can see it now…..
“Jerusalem - Experts are baffled this morning to find that the body of Jesus of Galilee is missing. Early reports show that the grave in which this local teacher was buried in just two days ago, is not empty. The grave stone was found rolled away and his wrapping were still laid in positions. The body appeared to have not been unwrapped, the body just disappeared…..” Well we know the truth, He did what he promised, He conquered death and rose on the third day. For all of us to have the opportunity to be saved… My questions to everyone is do you have the same motto as me. My motto is …”My GOD is not dead, He’s surely alive, He’s living on the inside Roaring like a Lion.” It is not to late for you to say the same. Ask God to be your Savior and Lord. Visit a local church to learn more.

THE LIBERTY CHAMBER OF COMMERCE APRIL UPDATE As we celebrated another successful year at the Liberty Chamber of Commerce, we wanted to say THANK YOU to our business members, our community, and our Liberty public officials. The Liberty Chamber of Commerce exists to be the connection between business and community. We generate business opportunities for local businesses and invite the general public to take part in these events. This helps your business gain exposure and produces networking opportunities. Our 47th Annual Liberty Chamber Banquet that was held on March 5th was a great success. It was an evening that was both informative and entertaining. The chamber decorating committee had transformed the American Legion Post into a festive venue. Red, white and blue represented the Liberty Chamber’s patriotic theme. The Chamber banquet was well attended by many chamber businesses, as well as state, county, and local officials. The event was a good mix of business and pleasure. Debbie Adams the Chamber president gave the opening remarks and welcomed everyone. She introduced the chamber board and recognized the public officials. Town Manager, Roy Lynch gave a community update and introduced all of the Town Department heads. Mayor Filmore York provided a summary of positive business opportunities that have occurred in Liberty over the past year and anticipating future growth. Kevin Franklin of the Randolph County Economic Development Corporation,( EDC) highlighted a few of the industrial projects that the county is pursuing. Bonnie Renfro, also with the EDC, assured us of the positive change that the mega site would add to our business community. Gwen Daye, chamber vp, closed the evening with a visual Chamber year in review presentation. A silent auction that included many donated items from local . businesses and individuals gave area businesses an opportunity to highlight their products and / or services. There were several door prizes and raffled giveaways for all of the guests. Overall, the evening provided a time to socialize, enjoyable music, great information, a wonderful dinner, all with a little fun and laughter added in. We even sang “Happy Birthday” to Senator Rick Gunn. * The highlight of the evening was the Liberty Chamber Awards Ceremony The 2016 award recipients were nominated by our chamber membership and voted on by the Liberty community. The winners at the 47th Annual Liberty Chamber of Commerce Banquet were as follows: 2016 BUSINESS of the YEAR: Smoke House Bistro The Smokehouse Bistro has been in Liberty for a little more than one year, but what an impact it has made! Mark Rutzen, owner and operator of the Bistro is a 4 star chef. All food items are made fresh with high quality local (where available) ingredients. The Smoke House really appreciates the community support. Mark has had 30 years of experience in the restaurant business. He has worked in eating establishments up and down the east coast, from New York to Florida. Mark claims that it is in Liberty, where he has found the best, most loyal clientele he has ever had. Mark sends a big “Thank you” out to “All of Liberty”. He is grateful, and has big plans for the future of the Smoke House Bistro in Liberty.

high academics and good citizenship potential. The motto for the MLK committee is: “All God’s people should work together in harmony for the betterment of all people.” The Liberty MLK parade was initiated to bring attention to this good cause.
2016 Church of the Year: First Baptist Church Liberty NC A little history: In March 1886 Dr. A.J. Patterson, Henry M. Crutchfield, T.M. Robertson & J.W. Kimrey organized a Baptist church in Liberty. Services were first held under a great oak tree behind the Washington Brower home, on lot 100 South Fayetteville Street. The congregation grew and in February 23, 1975 it had a groundbreaking for the new church located at 659 S. Fayetteville Street. There are currently approximately 75 members. The pastor for the last eight years is Rev. Brian Harrington. Gary Davis, who accepted the award on behalf of First Baptist said, “We are just doing what any good church is called to do; Sharing the Good News of Jesus Christ.” All are invited to worship at First Baptist. We also want to recognize the runner ups in each category.
Business of the Year Runner up: Sapphire Dance Studio Business Person of the Year Runner up: Mark Rutzen of SmokeHouse Bistro Volunteer of the Year Runner Up: Mr. Joel Herndon of HST Securities Church of the Year Runner Up: Grace Lutheran Church. These folks were nominated by our chamber membership and also received a lot of votes from the community. These businesses and individuals certainly do their part in making “Liberty a Great Place to Live”
2016 BUSINESS Person of the YEAR: Dr. R Andrews Sykes, D.D.S Dr . Andy Sykes has had a family dental practice here in Liberty for 41 years. Dr. Sykes has been a loyal, and consistent chamber member over the years. He served as chamber president, in the 1980’s. He is actively involved in the Ruritan Club. He currently serves on the board of trustees at Randolph Community College and has since 1991. Dr. Sykes is active in the community and sponsors many area projects. He is a very humble person and does not seek recognition. Most of his efforts go on “behind the scenes”. The honor of being nominated and chosen as the Business Person of the Year was a “big surprise.” 2016 Volunteer of the Year: MLK Committee The Martin Luther King Jr. Committee was established here in Liberty to support children’s education. Each year the committee awards a scholarship to children in area churches that show spiritual leadership,

Town of Pleasant Garden to Dedicate New Greenway in memory of Representative Howard Coble The Town of Pleasant Garden will hold a ribbon-cutting ceremony to formally open its new greenway at 1:00PM on Saturday, April 2, 2016 at Town Hall located at 4920 Alliance Church Road in Pleasant Garden. The Town Council will unveil signage dedicating the facility in memory of southeastern Guilford County native Howard Coble who served as the town’s advocate in the US House of Representatives for thirty years. Elected officials from the federal, state and local levels will be in attendance. The event is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served following the ceremony. The 700-feet paved trail connects Pleasant Garden Town Hall to Volunteer Park and its athletic fields. It was constructed with federal transportation funding and matching funds from the town. The greenway is an attractive recreational walkway and provides a convenient pedestrian connection between the two town facilities. Anderson and Associates designed and engineered the trail. P&S Grading LLC completed construction in early 2016.

Just See What Will Happen
By: Andy Clapp April’s arrival brings excitement in my household. The weather begins to change and as the temperatures get warmer, we enjoy spending time outdoors with our children. We also enjoy planting our family garden together, my daughters’ assistance coming in the form of placing the seeds in the ground to help their daddy. We water the seeds and check their progress each day. Once in our planting process, I placed a bag of seed in my back pocket, inadvertently spilling some on the ground that had not been prepared for gardening. The seed had gotten wet and rather than trying to gather up those seeds, I threw some dirt on top and said, “Let’s just see what happens to those.” Over the course of the next few weeks, we watched as the seed produced cucumber plants though we had not properly prepared the soil for it. More important than any vegetable seeds, planting the seeds of faith is a vitally important work. Jesus taught a parable about sowing seeds, explaining the various types of soil that the seed fell upon. He explained that some seed fell by the roadside, some fell upon the rocky ground, and some of the seed fell amongst the thorns. Then He said, “Still others fell on good ground, and produced a crop: some 100, some 60, and some 30 times what was sown. Anyone who has ears should listen!” (Matthew 13:8-9 HCSB) Though there were some seed that did not produce anything, the sower still scattered seeds in those places in the hopes that something might spring forth. We often focus only on the seed that produced a crop in this parable, but we should see the heart of the sower. He scattered seed everywhere in the hopes that it would produce. We fall into a pattern of only sowing the seeds of faith in places where we feel there is a guaranteed yield but the sower teaches us to spread those seeds everywhere and let God work to produce a crop from that seed. Everything that I knew about gardening said that the spilled cucumber seeds were destined to fail. My understanding was that those were wasted seeds that would fall prey to a number of factors that would choke out their growth. I learned that God can do amazing things even in the places where we think nothing good can come. As we live our lives as the sowers of faith, spreading those seeds throughout the world will allow God to produce a harvest in places we never thought possible. We are called to scatter the seeds and just see what the Lord can do! He may produce a crop out of that life that is far greater than anything we ever imagined.

April 2016 Athletic Training Month So What Is An Athletic Trainer
The Liberty Leader Newspaper
Liberty’s Park & Rec Director , Martin Rierson Retires
In honor of Athletic Training Month I asked the Liberty Leader if I could write a quick article about athletic training. Hi, my name is Chad Bowman and as you may have guessed, I’m an Athletic Trainer. If you are like the vast majority you probably have no idea what an athletic trainer is/does. So please allow me to share some details…Athletic trainers are certified and licensed healthcare professionals that work to prevent and treat musculoskeletal injuries and sports related illnesses. ATs work under the direction and collaborate with physicians to prevent, diagnose, treat, and rehabilitate injuries and medical conditions sustained while playing sports. ATs work with the physically active population through all stages of life. We can be found in many different arenas such as physicians offices, performing arts studios, or more commonly to this area at your local high school. For those that have encountered an AT you may have gotten a mild misconception that we are all about tape and ice. Please keep in mind, that while this is a part of our field it is not the whole. Reminder that we are trained to handle life threading conditions such as cervical spine and head injuries/heat exhaustion and have been trained to notice even the smallest signs that you may have altered brain function after a collusion. We have study intently and vigorously to understand how your musculoskeletal system works and how to make it work more efficiently. We have labored for hours teaching your children that what goes into their bodies makes a difference on the field. Yet we still sometimes are referred to as “trainer”, implying personal trainer who solely focus on fitness and conditioning. Which is a little hurtful when your consider that's not our title and only a tinny portion of what we are capable of doing. So why become and athletic trainer you might ask. Its definitely not for the monetary Value, or the hours, or the fame. Just ask my family about the first two. No instead, and this is personal belief, we become ATs because of the passion. The love of your athletes, and the compassion we have for the injured. The sympathy that I have for that guy who can't seem to fix his knee pain no matter what the doctor says. It's hard to explain, but my love of explaining that “sir your knee pain is actually coming from your weak gluteus medius or tight IT-Band” then putting the pieces together so he can feel better. That's why I am proud to be an Athletic Trainer. That's what drives me everyday to learn and grow more in my field of profession. So, I employ the next time your near one of our local high schools, search out the individual wearing a Randolph Athletic Training Services shirt and have a quick talk. They may be tired from treating 20 athletes in the past hour, but they'll be happy just to discuss the job that they so love. Story By , Chad Bowman LAT, ATC, CSCS, CES

Friday March 14th, 2016 was the last official day of the Liberty Parks & Recreation Director, Martin Rierson. He has now retired and is enjoying spending more time with his family and on the golf course with friends! On his last day, there was a small luncheon ceremony held at the Town Hall to commend him for his service. He was thankfully presented with a service plaque and a retirement gift for all he has done, on behalf of Mayor Fil York. He faithfully served our community for more than 10 years and left quite a legacy in his department as well as leaving a secure foundation for our new Director, Scott Kidd. Most notably, he was responsible for helping implement the Liberty Parks & Rec Soccer Program and instrumental in securing the grants for the ½ mile Walking Trail with adult exercise equipment at Freedom Park. He also helped put together the .8 mile looped woodland Eight Oaks Trail & Booklet. You can find more information about the Parks & Rec Department and these programs on the Town of Liberty website at www.liberty-nc.com. Most of all we would like to honor him and thank him for helping make our community what we pride ourselves in, “A Great Place to Live!” HAPPY RETIREMENT MARTIN! Story By Tabitha Schenkel

On Wednesday March 23rd, the kindergarteners at Liberty Elementary took a community walk field trip through downtown. The children visited the fire station, watched a demo, asked questions about firefighting and climbed on the ladder truck. The firefighters were happy to pose with the little ones for pictures and the children were very excited to see these heroes in person. Next on the walk was Food Lion, where the children went on a store tour, sampled a cheese and watched a cupcake decorating demonstration. They were especially interested in seeing the inside of the ice cream cooler. The folks at Food Lion were nice enough to send a cupcake for each child to take back to school and enjoy after lunch. The last destination was the police department. The kids got to listen to a talk about safety, learned about the tools an officer carries and they got to experience the inside of a cruiser. The officers were great interacting with the kindergarteners and they gave each child their own police badge sticker. This was a great way to introduce the little ones to our community heroes and give them a behind the scenes look at places they are curious about. The parents who went along had a great time and learned a lot as well.

Update From Smoke House Bistro By the way our business, Smoke House Bistro , located at 124 W Swannanoa Ave in downtown, has grown over the past year and after much thought and consideration, due to a lack of staff and in an effort to be able to offer the same quality service and staff that we put into the food that we offer, we have decided to stop offering lunch Tuesday through Friday so we can put more effort into our dinner service and dinner specials. We will be concentrating on offering fresh new dinner ideas along with current favorites. We continue to be grateful to each and every customer for your support.

TransformationTuesday by Carrie Wilkerson Carrier lost alot of weight and several asked her out she did it. Well she gave this great response. I felt it was worth passing on. People want to know how and how fast and what do they have to give up... 1. It has taken me every day. Not 6 weeks, not 6 months. Every day. I start again every day. 2. I gave up bad habits one at a time. I gave up excuses. I gave up blame. I gave up shortcuts and fake stuff. (I gave up bread and sugar too 3. I took advice from my body about what was working and what wasn't. I took advice from people that had won, not people still at war. I focused on one path instead of chasing other miracles. 4. I celebrated every win. Some days that was a new number or a new size. Some days it was an airplane aisle without turning sideways. Some days it was someone saying "all the cute clothes are for little people like you". Some days it was just being able to put the bread down, spit the sugar out or stopping before regret! And honestly...some days I celebrated being able to start again tomorrow. 5. I made time for success. I prepped. I planned. I scheduled it. Success (in anything) has to be scheduled. 6. I quit waiting for a better time. Y'all...this applies to everything!!!!

During the spring months, everyone is very excited to get back outside and play in the sun. Although Vitamin D is essential to many aspects of life, like anything else, too much of one thing is never good. Randolph Cancer Center will host a free skin cancer screening on Tuesday, May 10th. According to the American Cancer Society, more than one million Americans develop skin cancer each year. While skin cancer is the most prevalent form of cancer among both women and men, it is easy to detect and treat. If you have a mole or discoloration that you’re concerned about, come have it checked on May 10th between 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. at Randolph Cancer Center located at 373 N. Fayetteville Street, by Dr. Todd Williams, Gay Markham, NP, and Donna Jennings, PA-C. This screening is available for anyone who has not had a skin cancer screening in the last two years and who have an unusual mole or discoloration. “Although there are many types of skin cancer, the three most common types are Basal Cell Carcinoma (BCC), Squamous Cell Carcinoma (SCC) and Malignant Melanoma (MM),” explained Dr. Todd Williams. “One thing that is typical of skin cancer is that it tends to grow and change over time. Moles or spots that change over time should be evaluated by y o u r healthcare provider,” he added.

Great Ministry For Easter They say a picture is worth a thousand words. Well what about a life re-enactment of the Easter Holiday and its true meaning of what God sent Jesus to the other to do. From death to resurrection these scenes portrayed the actual events. Along with back ground music to live mini scenes, this was a great event. All of this took place over Friday and Saturday March 25 and 26 and held at Snow Camp at the Snow Camp Historical Site near Ye Olde Country Kitchen. Also there was an Easter Celebration with crafts for kids, food, music and egg hunt held on Saturday from 2-5. A special shout out to Pleasant Hill Christian Church for all the helping serving hands that put this great ministry on. They even had a hospitality center in the middle for visitors. Plus every guest got a booklet that gave the true meaning behind Easter plus how to become saved. Over 400 people were ministered to, To God Be The Glory.

Do you fear falling when getting out of bed in the morning or even when walking to get the mail? Does it make you nervous to bend without using a chair for fear you might topple over? These are everyday tasks that depend on your ability to control your balance. Balance problems affect about 8 million Americans and 2.4 million Americans report having chronic dizziness. Individuals who experience balance and dizziness problems often feel embarrassed or limited to stationary activities.

HEALTH CORNER – APRIL 2016 SEASONAL ALLERGIES The birds are chirping, crocuses are pushing up through the barren ground and millions of Americans are heading to the pharmacy seeking relief for approaching spring seasonal allergies. More than 40 million people are reaching for nasal sprays, popping pills and filling Neti pots to rid themselves from seasonal allergies, hay fever or allergic rhinitis. Whether your allergies are triggered by trees, grass or weeds, mold spores and dust mites, or cat, dog or rodent dander, there are some steps you can take to help you get through the spring without a constant red, runny nose, watery eyes and congested head. Allergy specialists from the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunity (ACAAI) suggest that suffers take the following steps: Start early – Don’t wait until you are sneezing and wheezing to start your allergy medications. Be proactive, the ACAAI recommends and “at the very least, take medications at the first sign of any symptom as opposed to waiting until things get really bad.“ Keep the windows closed – Opening windows in your home or your car allows the plant pollens to get inside. While the breeze might feel invigorating, and many of us have been taught to let the fresh air blow away the winter germs, you are allowing the pollen to attach itself to your surroundings. The wind makes it easier for the pollen to become airborne, especially on dry days. Exercise after dinner – Pollen counts tend to be higher in the morning. While exercise is good, save the walk or jog until the afternoon or evening hours. Bathe before bed – “Once you’re in for the night, hop in the shower — even if it’s the second one of the day — and wash the pollens off,” the ACAAI recommends. It only takes one step into the great outdoors for tiny pollen particles to cling to your body. If your schedule does not allow for a quick scrub during the early evening, then take a short shower just minutes before climbing into bed. See a doctor – If you have moderate to severe allergies, don’t expect overthe-counter medicines to take care of the problem. It’s best to seek a board-certified allergist who can pinpoint your triggers and specific allergies. Instead of guessing, allow a professional to identify the problem so he/she can customize a treatment that will be more effective, the ACAAI recommends. ERHS FFA Alumni Rodeo Just Around The Corner
The Eastern Randolph High School FFA Alumni in cooperation with Jay Hinson and his Lucky J Rodeo Company and Arena is presenting their 13th annual Jeff Hinson Memorial North Carolina High School Rodeo. It will be held on May 6th and May 7th at 7:00 pm at the Lucky J Arena on Hwy 64 East of Ramseur. The arena is at the intersection of Hwy 64 and Shady Grove Road near Ramseur. The purpose of this event is to raise scholarship money for graduating FFA members, assist in sending FFA members to local, state, and national leadership conferences, and to help financially support the Agriculture Education/FFA programs at Eastern Randolph High School and Southeastern Randolph Middle School. This event is being governed by the N.C. High School Rodeo Association. They are a non-profit organization dedicated to the development of sportsmanship, horsemanship, and character in the youth of our state. They give high school students the opportunity to participate and compete in this unique and challenging sport. The NCHSRA offers a rodeo program that sets high school rodeo apart from the other varsity sports. The athletes compete on a scale comparable to collegiate and professional rodeo competitors. Contestants will compete in the following events: Bull Riding, Barrel Racing, Pole Bending, Breakaway Calf Roping, Cattle Cutting, Team Roping, Goat Tying, Bareback Riding, Saddle Bronc Riding, Calf Roping, & Steer Wrestling. There are over 40 local sponsors many of whom have sponsored all thirteen of the rodeo events. Wayne Thomas Chevrolet & Cadillac is the overall sponsor of this event. Other major sponsors are Langley Grading of Staley, Harvest House of Ramseur, Swaim Heating and Air Conditioning of Climax, Randolph County Farm Bureau, Liberty Farm and Garden, Randolph County Livestock and Poultry Improvement Association, Carolina Stockyards of Siler City, Randolph Communications, James River Equipment of Asheboro, Caviness Farms Hauling and Grading of Siler City, and Structural Woods/Cox Industries of Coleridge. Food sales will start at 5:30 pm for participants and people attending the rodeo event. Tickets are $8 in advance and $10 at the gate. Children 5 years and under get in free. Tickets can be bought at Eastern Randolph High School and the Wayne Thomas Dealership in Asheboro. This is a family event and we will have activities for young children each night. We will have local area students participating both nights as well as other high school students from across the state. For more information call Raymond Caviness at 919-742-3296 or 336-953-1424.

David Wrenn Memorial Run Join us on Saturday, April 30, for a time of exercise and fellowship in memory of our friend David Wrenn and to support Faith Christian School. Those who knew David know that he was an avid runner. Following his untimely passing, his children began an annual event to honor him and to raise funds for a scholarship in his memory. The David Wrenn Memorial Run offers a 5K run and a 1 mile fun run and participants are free to run or leisurely walk the course. We encourage families to participate together, so bring your children, a stroller, your dog (on a leash of course) and let’s raise some money to share with students that may need assistance attending FCS. Pre-registration deadline is Monday, April 11. Registration includes a t-shirt and lunch. We encourage you to register online (http://bit.ly/1Ueslik) so we can plan accordingly . Checks are to be made payable to Faith Christian School and can be paid the day of the run. If you have questions, contact school.
