O Little Town of Liberty

By: Andy Clapp Bethlehem. A small town overshadowed by the towering influence of nearby Jerusalem. A place, a quiet reprieve from the hustle and bustle of the Jerusalem streets, often overlooked because of its neighbor six miles away. Even Micah pointed out the size of Bethlehem, as he prophesied, “But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, though you are little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of you shall come forth to Me the One to be Ruler in Israel, whose goings forth are from of old, from everlasting.” (Micah 5:2 NKJV) Bethlehem was a tiny town that was stopping point on a journey to a larger place, so similar to the little town of Liberty we call home. Over two thousand years after the glorious happenings of a night in a little town, we continue to sing about that place called Bethlehem. Phillips Brooks penned the words that echo through the streets during this season, “O Little Town of Bethlehem”. Louis F. Benson would also write a hymn titled “O Sing a Song of Bethlehem”. A small village would be spoken of for centuries though it was overlooked during the day when what took place there would forever alter history. As we look at Bethlehem, we see nothing incredibly special about the place. The prior claim to fame was that King David was born there and the town had been pinpointed as the arrival place for Christ in God’s message through Micah. Joseph and Mary returned to Bethlehem after the decree of Caesar for a census to be taken. There, they were where they needed to be at the precise moment they needed to be there. After Christ was born, though most of the world missed the epic event of the night, the town would never be overlooked again. O little town of Liberty, do you see tonight that what set Bethlehem apart that night sets you apart tonight as well? Bethlehem was defined not by what it had, as it lacked most everything Jerusalem had to offer, but was remembered for Who it had, the One born in a manger that night. That same Jesus, the Son of God, is here in our midst in our town, the Spirit of God living inside of each of us who have laid down our lives, taken up our crosses, and are following Him. Christ, the everlasting light, is shining in our lives and in this season, we should see how the presence of Christ in our lives brings life to this town and illuminates the darkness, just as the darkness was forever pierced in Bethlehem that night. Liberty, a place of warmth and life, is defined by His presence as He works in the churches in our town and changes hearts and lives each day. This is the moment God has placed us in this town, at this moment, for the reason of pointing others to Him. In these dark streets, the everlasting light shines and that sets this town apart from so many others. Christ is here. He is alive. He is living in us.

History Snapshot Of Liberty

The original Curtis Theater, located where Brenda Campbell's Liberty Beauty Shop is now (and whatever is next to her). The theater was opened in 1929, closed awhile during the Depression, but opened again when times were better. When it first opened, nine-year-old John Curtis, Jr., took up tickets, nine cents for children, twenty-five for adults. In 1949, the new theater was built across the street on the corner. The building to the right is now Carolyn's and had apartments upstairs.

I grew up in a small town called Liberty, NC during a time when people treated each other like Family. We went outside to play, we got dirty and we didn't eat fast food all the time, we ate beans, rice & gravy, chicken, sandwiches, candy, cookies, and snow cones. We played Simon Says, Mother May I, Red Light/ Green Light, Hide and Go seek and there was no bottled water, we drank from the water hose. We walked all over the neighborhood and rode our bikes for hours without a cellphone. If someone had a fight, that's what it was...a fist fight. Kids didn't have guns when I grew up. The fire-flys or when your mom whistled for you were your curfew. We weren't asked if we wanted to go to church or school, it was mandatory. We washed the dishes by hand in the sink and cut the grass with a push lawnmower. We watched our mouths around our elders because we knew If you DISRESPECTED any grown up you're gonna get HIT with whatever's close. None of it killed us. As a matter of fact, we think it all made us stronger and better able to get along with others. Embrace this if you're glad that you grew up this way and will never forget these valuable memories! Share this with family and friends. Great memories flooded my brain as I thought of this.

Liberty Man Voted Twice in 1961 Election

Carter Completes FIC Course

The following article is taken from the archives of the Patterson Cottage Museum. It seemed appropriate in light of the recent election, especially the close race for N.C. Governor. The race for mayor in Liberty in 1961 was a close one. Two well-known, wellliked men were running for the post. One was Troy Smith, owner of the local Ford dealership running for his third term as mayor; the other was Dr. Joe Griffith, the local chiropractor. As the Greensboro Daily News said, “Two good men. Mighty good men. It was hard to choose between them. Mighty hard.” As the results of the election came in, it was obvious that it had been hard to choose between them. Troy Smith ended up with 242 votes and so did Joe Griffith. According to the Daily News, someone would say, “Here comes the mayor”, and somebody else would say, “Which one?” But Liberty couldn’t keep two mayors, no matter how much they were liked and admired by their fellow citizens. So the Liberty Town Board met to discuss the situation. They asked Town Attorney Gerald Parker how to break the tie. Parker came back with not one, but two answers. Liberty’s town charter said that the elections registrar is supposed to break the tie in such cases. But the N.C. State law, Parker added, says that the tie is to be broken by casting lots. In other words, they could flip a coin, roll dice or draw straws. But Troy Smith and Dr. Griffith, being good church-going men, would have nothing to do with games of chance. That left only one alternative. The Town Board approached the Town Registrar, 76year-old Roy Reitzel.

Tahesia C. Carter, Liberty, North Carolina, a Modern Woodmen of America representative, has attained the Fraternal Insurance Counselor (FIC) designation. The FIC title is an educational designation that can be earned by career life insurance representatives associated with fraternal insurance societies. Representatives devote more than one year to meet the examination and career development criteria set by the Fraternal Field Managers Association. Founded in 1883, Modern Woodmen of America touches lives and secures futures. The fraternal financial services organization offers financial products and fraternal member benefits to individuals and families throughout the United States.

Reitzel was a well-known character in Liberty, having been mayor himself. As a matter of fact, the Liberty townspeople had voted him out of office after he went against their wishes and put in water and sewer in the town in 1927. Reitzel, according to the Daily News, was well aware of how angry the taxpayers could get. So when the Town Board asked him to break the tie, he refused. “I don’t think any one individual should have the responsibility of saying who should be mayor,” Reitzel said. “Besides, I’ve already voted.” The Board once again asked Smith and Griffith if they would draw lots. They again refused. So the problem was put back in Reitzel’s lap. Finally he conceded and cast his vote for Troy Smith. “Smith has lived here all his life,” said Reitzel, “and he knows what the town needs. Besides, I voted for him the first time. Why should I change?” For awhile it was said that Reitzel claimed the title of “mayor maker” and told at least one person, “If the mayor don’t suit you, just come see me.” It turned out that 485 people actually cast ballots in that 1961 election, making a tie impossible. But as Reitzel pointed out, one man came in, took a ballot, couldn’t make up his mind, and dropped it into the box unmarked. Reitzel reckoned that man could have saved him a lot of trouble and the ire of 242 citizens if he’d only been more decisive. Dr. Joe Griffith went on to win more elections, serving five times as Liberty’s mayor from 1971-1981. He also won another tie vote four days after Reitzel made his decision. The Grace Lutheran Church held a business meeting to pick two new members of their church council. Wayland Garner, the top voter getter, won one of the seats. Second place was a tie between Carl Loflin and someone who was no stranger to ties, Joe Griffith. The church, perhaps after watching the turmoil the town had just gone through, didn’t hesitate. They just voted again and this time Dr. Joe Griffith was the winner. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * The Patterson Cottage Museum recently had several donations: Chip Simms found a framed 1940’s Loflin Funeral Home ad featuring the photos of 36 area ministers; Carol Wall of Awesome Finds donated an old bonnet; the museum was given permission to rescue the pulpit from the old Rocky River Methodist Church; and Carol Gregg Desautels of Gainesville, FL, donated many family photographs, including some from Kimesville Lake during the height of its popularity as a local resort. I'm convinced my enjoyment of the combination of work and play came from my childhood. I was raised on a farm where hard work was a common occurrence. During the hot summer, after getting up hay, we would all come back to the house where mama would have some homemade ice cream or a chilled watermelon for us. After we enjoyed the tasty treat and had rested for a few minutes, the fun would inevitably begin. Since there was a water spigot and hose near our resting spot, someone would decide that another "helper" needed to be cooled off just a little bit more!......and there we'd go, around and around the yard chasing each other with a water hose. If we had watermelon, you would more than likely have a seed land on you at some point. It was never hard to spot the culprit because they usually had a big grin on their face. When nothing was left but the watermelon rind.......seed spitter beware, as the rind "may" be applied as a "face mask"..........and so the saying goes: "don't dish it out if you can't take it". Since I definitely dished it out, I had my fair share of "taking it"!! It was all in good fun, and laughter would always erupt as the shenanigans would e v o l v e .

Liberty Community Pre-Thanksgiving Service

The Liberty Association of Churches held another great Pre Thanksgiving Service for the Liberty community. Numerous churches were present and took roles in the night. Edwards Grove Baptist Church hosted the event with a pot luck meal following the service. Pastor Calvin Stoke of Edwards Grove Baptist Church welcomed everyone and lead us in a responsive reading. The event was filled with great music by the community choir made up of numerous Liberty citizens that Don Herndon led and helped put together. Pastor Randy Hand and Pastor Gordon Fulton gave lessons from the Bible for this service. Pastor David Hopson, Pastor of Rocky River Friends and Vice President of LAC, gave an update on what LAC has done this year and then took up a love offering for the Food Pantry. The message of “Give Thanks With A Grateful Heart� Eph 4:4-8 was given by Pastor Nathan Snider of Grace Chapel UMC. From this the following was the main point I wanted to share, the three Prayers Pastor Snider wanted us to focus on. Three prayers for this Thanksgiving season 1.Prayer that god will move our hearts from complaints to praise( no whining zone ) 2. God move our hearts from criticism to encouragement(Build up verses tearing down) 3. God will move our hearts from cynical heart to trusting heart - faith ( cynical heart can never be a grateful heart) The event was concluded with a benediction by Minister Issac Fortune. Such a great night of fellowship and spirit lead. A truly great event.

Christmas Celebrated in Liberty

Liberty. It’s a great place to live! It’s a great place to Celebrate Christmas! The first Saturday in December was no exception. It was a great day for a Parade Liberty. The sun was shining the air was crisp, and the mood was merry and bright! People from all over, came out to enjoy a festive afternoon in the Heart of NC, as the town of Liberty celebrated Christmas as only our hometown can. The Liberty Chamber of Commerce hosted its annual Christmas Parade and Tree Lighting Festival. Col. Guy Troy was this year’s Grand Marshal of the Parade. He led the parade with a record number of entries. The Parade featured bright red fire trucks, classic antique cars, marching bands from Providence Grove and Randleman High Schools, tractors of every variety, dance groups performing along the way, church choirs and youth groups, bicycles, tricycles, creative Christmas floats, and of course Santa & Mrs. Clause. The Parade is also an opportunity for the Chamber to highlight the recognized businesses and outstanding people of the year. Unfortunately, the Business Person of the Year; Dr. Andy Sykes was unable to attend due to a previously scheduled business conference. The Business of the Year; Smokehouse Bistro was also unable to participate in the parade because they were busy serving lunch to downtown holiday shoppers. The Church of the Year; First Baptist Church had a decorated float. Representing the Volunteer of the Year, were members of the Martin Luther King Jr. Committee.; Mrs. Helen Headen and Clementine Farrar rode in a classic Mustang convertible provided by David Freeman of Freeman Ford. Everyone was displaying their Christmas Spirit. The Chamber provided over 10,000 pieces of candy that was safely distributed along the curb side to children of all ages. Young and old celebrated, kids from one to ninety nine. Based on the judges scoring the winners of the best floats were as follows: 
 3rd place: Thompson Fencing with their Wildlife Float
 2nd place: Providence Grove FFA with their Covered Wagon Old Country Christmas Float
 1st place winner was High Tech Collision with their Santa’s Workshop. The Christmas Tree Lighting Event is always a unique celebration in Liberty. It is a time when people of Liberty choose to give back to the community. Local and area Businesses, Individuals, Churches, and Civic Organizations take this opportunity to show their “Christmas Spirit” by giving away FREE items, and treats as a gift to the community. This has become a tradition in Liberty for close to 15 years now. Thank you to those who volunteer their time, effort and services for all others to enjoy. The holiday atmosphere was set along Main St (Swannanoa Ave), with the new Town Christmas lights shining bright. Festive wreaths and greenery decorated the street posts and Gazebo thanks to Rhonda from Liberty Hardware, who volunteered her time and creativity. Snow was blowing from the roof top of the Smokehouse Bistro. Classic Christmas carols and contemporary favorites were sung by local artist; Keith Bartel, Jason & Troi, Love in Action Church, Rev. J.T. Edwards, and Don Herndon. Sapphire Dance Studios also performed a jingling beat. Over 300 hot dogs were served free of charge by the Bruchon family. Lewis Grove, Mt Pleasant, First Baptist, Grace Lutheran, New Life Ministries and the First United Methodist Church provided hot cocoa, cookies, water and hot cider. Love in Action Church gave away gift bags to the children. Loflin Funeral Home popped popcorn. Adam Lemmert State Farm Insurance also gave away cookies. High Tech Collision provided a fire pit to roast delicious marshmallows and s’mores in front of their Santa Workshop float. As children waited for their chance to sit on Santa’s lap, they wrote their wish list to Santa. Crayons, letter templates, and postage “paid” by Adams Home Repair. Thanks to Liberty Tax who opened their doors and invited children inside from the cold to have their pictures taken with Santa via CGT Photography. The seating area for Mr & Mrs Clause was beautifully decorated by Rhonda from Liberty Hardware. Santa’s helper Elf; Leah Parks was a great assistant. Harriett Jones of H&R Block also helped keep the line flowing so that all the children got their picture taken.

The highlight of the event, as always was the annual lighting of the Liberty Christmas Tree. Much hard work and hours of dedication went into preparing the tree, the lights and the Christmas Star. Thank you first of all to Dr. Blake for graciously providing the tree each year for the whole town to enjoy the entire Christmas season. Thank you to JB Griffith for providing a Woodmans of America grant to help purchase new lights and bigger star for the tree. Thanks, to John Moore with Moore and a Bucket for trimming the tree and putting the tree lights up. Thanks to Kivett’s welding for preparing the star. Thank you also to Richard Clapp of RC Computers and Greg Carpenter of Rubbermill for engineering the light strands, so that they will not damage the tree. Thank you to Liberty Hardware and Liberty Farm and Garden for providing the clips to attach the light strands. This year the lighting of the tree was certainly a sight to behold. The tree and star lit up beautifully at the end of a countdown 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, Merry Christmas! Liberty. It’s a great place to live! It’s a great place to celebrate Christmas!
 A special thank you to all the people “behind the scenes” that make the Parade and Tree Lighting happen.

Shout Out To Liberty Boy Scouts Giving For The Holidays During the month of November, Liberty's Boy Scout Troop 502 collected note Pads, pens, puzzle books, candy and other items. These items were used to make Christmas goodie bags for all 50 residents of the Liberty Village Retirement Apartments. Each scout filled a bag which included fruit cups donate by Liberty Food Lion and a personalized Christmas card from the scout. On Saturday morning, December 3rd, the scout delivered the bags. They were able to go in pairs to each apartment and visit with the residents. Many residents said that they look forward to seeing the scouts each year. It was a wonderful community service project for the scouts who enjoyed it as much as the residents. If you are a business located in the Eastern Randolph Area we are asking you to decorated the outside or window fronts of your business for Christmas. This year we are doing it a little different. We are asking you to take pictures of your business and submit them to info@ramseurchamberofcommerce.org . by December 18. On December 19 we will upload all the pictures we received and let our fans pick out 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners. All business that participates will get recognized this way.

That’s right, the Ramseur / Eastern Randolph Area Chamber of Commerce will be on the road promoting our members' businesses and connecting them with customers and clients who live throughout the area we serve. Since one of our goals for 2017 is to be more engaged within our community, our monthly Chamber of Commerce meetings will now be held at local businesses. These on-site business locations give our members opportunities to see the businesses in operation and explore possibilities for referrals and collaborations. The new meeting schedule begins this month, with the December 15 meeting at Franklinville United Methodist Church, the January 12 meeting at Jackie’s Flower Shop and the February 9 meeting at Harmony Baptist Church. The schedule is on our website ramseurchamberofcommerce.org and members will receive an email reminder of meeting locations. If you would like to host a monthly membership meeting, please contact the chamber at 336-824-2030. It's a great opportunity to show Chamber members the features and benefits of the products/services you provide, so they can easily make referrals. Why are we closing our office and going mobile? Great Words To Ponder Saw this on a friends (JC Parrish) Facebook Post and wanted everyone to read. Great words to share JC…. Hope everyone enjoys. With all the negative about Ramseur the last few months. I like to put something out there positive. The Chamber held their first ever 10K Run this weekend. It was called the Diner to Diner 10K Run. Was from Sherry's Restaurant to Franklinville Restaurant. We had 14 runners for the 10K. I had the privilege to help with this 10 K Run and while driving two of the runners back to their cars that stated that they didn't even knew Ramseur existed and because of the Race they fell in love with the town. They had planned on dining at a restaurant and touring the town while here. One of the runners was all the way from New York. So this was a positive event that brought people to the area that would not normally be here and spent money in town. Also on Saturday I was a business downtown and while there talking with the owner a nice couple came in and stated that they were driving down 64 heading back to durham and noticed a sign that stated downtown. They decided to check the area out and saw the store and stopped. They were impressed with what they seen and asked why our downtown wasn't alive. We told them some of the stuff that has happen and they stated they hope it would get better. The point of this is that when you work together as a whole and quit the back stabbing that is going on with certain people in town then this town could grow and become a great place to visit, live or retire here. I do love the town and that is why I i join the chambers to make it a better place. The chamber promotes this area more then most realize. We currently accepting new members and you do not have to have a business to become a member. Great things are coming in 2017. Buckle up and hold on for the adventure.
