Why is hell so awful? One, it was created for satan and his demons. Secondly, because people don’t realize that hell is the absence of God There’s no air in hell...because God is a breath of life There is no peace in hell...because God is the prince of peace. There is no comfort in hell...because God is the comforter There is no love in hell...because God is love Hell is darkness...because God is the light You don't have to go there

A BRIEF HISTORY OF LIBERTY Complied by Mary Lovett and Annie Flyn

Located near the geographical center of North Carolina, Liberty sits in the northeastern tip of Randolph County. Bordered on three sides by Guilford, Alamance and Chatham counties. Since the town was chartered January 30, 1889, with a population of about 600 persons. Liberty has enjoyed steady growth. The present population in 1984 was estimated at about 2,300 The transition from farm to industry is the story of North Carolina’s changing economic scene, and Liberty provides an excellent example of a typical farm community that has become heavily industrialized in a period of seventy years Blessed with the healthy climate, long growing season, woodlands of native hardwood trees, springs and streams nearby, and a soil good for growing. Liberty’s beginning reaches far back into our country’s history. Indian relics found in this area indicate that the land was rst occupied by the Catawba Indians, a branch of the eastern Sioux Tradition has it that the town took its name from an incident which occurred at the close of the Revolutionary War. At a crossroad on the farm of Abram Brower, a group of prisoners were said to have been freed Probably Liberty’s rst store was the general merchandise establishment known simply as “Troy’s Store”, with most of the trade being done in barter (exchanging of goods) The railroad reached the community in 1884, and was the vital link that turned Liberty into a town. Obligingly, the Cape Fear and Yadkin Valley Railway in its publication of 1889 described Liberty as “beautifully situated and presents a very pleasing appearance to the incoming railway passengers A rich part of Liberty’s history is contained in the educational life of the community. As early as 1886 the Liberty Academy began operation in a one-story, tworoom structure on the site of the present Liberty School. The school was supported by tuition paid by the students. While educational leaders struggled to establish a curriculum, civic leaders were making plans to have the town chartered. In 1887 plans were begun and although re destroyed most of the store building in 1888, by 1889 rebuilding had begun and the town was of cially named and chartered as LIBERTY. Henry Lillie Brower, a descendent of the early pioneer Abram Brower, became the rst mayor Looking after medical needs of the town was Doctor Armpstead Jack Patterson, who had begun his practice in the community about 1880. By 1890 he was both doctor and druggist, having established the Liberty Drug Store. In 1910 the rst manufacturing plant came to Liberty providing employment to approximately 450 people in May of 1973. This rm sparked Liberty’s industrial growth. It began as the Picker-Stick and Novelty Company, and assumed the name of Liberty Chair Company in 1912. It began the manufacture of household chairs and tables. In 1970 Liberty Chair was sold to Mohasco Industries and the name was changed to Liberty Furniture Company in 1975 The company brought electricity to Liberty, purchasing a dynamo in 1916. Carolina Power and Light Company purchased the franchise in 1925. As early as 1887 Liberty had a paper. “Our Homes” was published weekly by E.I. Stout and Company, and sold for fty cents a year. In 1990 a newspaper known as “The Liberty Register” was published with the motto of “JUSTICE TO ALL; SPECIAL PRIVILEGES TO NONE”. It was issued each Friday. Papers were published sporadically over the years, and in 1939 THE CHATHAM NEWS and Publishing Company acquired THE LIBERTY NEWS, and except for the years during WWII it has been in continuous operation as a weekly issue

The strong religious life of the community has brought a number of denominations into the town. Telephone service began here in 1907 and it was a private own company, Randolph Telephone. In 1984 Liberty had a governing body consisting of a major and ve commissioners, all elected by the citizens of Liberty. John W. Planning pays in retirement Personal savings are key to living comfortably Michael doesn’t see himself living on the beach when he retires, but he’d like to vacation there with his wife. He worries he isn’t saving enough in the 401(k) account he has at work, but he isn’t sure what more he can manage with two kids, a mortgage and credit cards. Michael faces two dilemmas: Saving enough money for a comfortable retirement, and making those savings last his lifetime. Like most Americans, having money in retirement may depend on part-time jobs, personal savings and tax-advantaged retirement savings accounts. A financial representative can help people like Michael understand their options, such as 401(k) and 403(b) plans, annuities, and individual retirement accounts (IRAs). The key is to set goals and get started. The longer you wait to start saving, the more you will have to save to reach those goals.

I can help you plan for life. J. B. Griffith, III, FIC, LUTCF, RICP, ChFC®, CLU® 147 S. Fayetteville Street PO Box 699 Liberty, NC 27298 B. 336-622-6020 C. 336-908-1748 j.b.griffith.3rd@mwarep.org
