Well, from Liberty to Ramseur our small towns are starting to grow and this is where you need to do your part. Liberty for example, now have a great list of established business that are locally owned and operated for years that depends on your sales and visit. This is there lively hood. Now in Liberty we have new restaurants that have or in the process of opening in the few weeks to give you the variety you have been wanting. From Basils with their Thai, Smokehouse Bistro with their smoked foods, Beaver Creek BBQ with their great BBQ, Dogwood Bistro with their farm to table menu and A Piece Of Cake that offers great bakery items. Now you have your variety. Do you need more reasons to become fans of buy local. 1) To support your community and neighbors 2) Shopping local creates more local jobs 3) You are responsible for your community 4) Local businesses appreciate you more 5) Local businesses go the extra mile 6) We love the shop owners who make our community one of kind 7) To reduce your carbon footprint (save gas) 8) You buy local because you are local 9) It feels good to buy local 10) Local food tastes fresher 11) It is so much fun (try it.. you will see) 12) Most of all it just makes sense. A Special Man Turns 75

Happy Birthday From The Liberty Leader Ph 336-795-0054 / 336-404-9791

Well I had the honor to be invited to a great mans 75th birthday this last month. A man that left his mark in the area not only in ink but in hearts. Milburn Gibbs turned 75 years young and they had a roast and toast for him in Siler City with family and friends. It was such a great event to hear all the great things to be said about him. Many of us has read his stories in the original Liberty Newspaper that used to be published in town and also in the Chatham News until the day he retires. I know when I was struggling on trying to start this small town monthly newspaper, I approached Milburn to give me some guidance. One thing he told me was only print good stuff. He stated the world has enough places to see and hear bad things, have a paper that leaves a good feeling when done reading. He further told me I did not need to look hard for stories, for everyone has a great story in them to share. He said you just have to spend some time talking to them and everything unfolds. How true that is. For years Liberty was blessed to have such a great reporter and writer in their midst to catch all the great happening and events in our area. I strive to be one day a fraction of the publishing reporter he was. Lets not forget the smiles he put on faces as he was hired from the North Pole to play the role of Mr Santa. Milburn I think I can speak for most of Liberty area, thank you for bringing some great light and smiles to our community. - By Kevin Bowman

A Piece Of Cake Bakery - Hits Liberty If you have not ventured down to the new bakery in downtown Liberty you have missed a sweet place. The owners of the locally owned business had been working months to get this place open and during the Christmas Parade doors opened up. Its been so exciting to see them increase their hours due to the food traffic. A full bakery kitchen was installed in the back of the building. In front you have a great place to kick back with family and friends and enjoy a delightful visit. They stripped everything back to the original brickwork and their decor has brought so much character to the place. They offer home made assortments of pies, cakes, doughnuts, pastries, cookies and sweets. Do not forget their yeast rolls… oh my! You can also order that special order all the way to birthday cakes, just allow a 24 hour notice. I almost forgot, for $2 you can get a shot of espresso or $3 a 12 ounce latte or mocha. Liberty’s own version of Starbucks with a reasonable price, oh yeah! Each month they will have monthly specials. January will be Apple Fritters for 50 cents each with a limit of two. As you can see from the picture below, it got a seal of approval from Mr and Mrs Santa. See you all there. - By Kevin Bowman

This fund was established for local economic development to enhance growth to Ramseur and vicinity. The fund was established as a project of the Ramseur Small Towns Economic Prosperity (STEP) grant program and seeded with $2,000 in grant funds. In an expression of support for the community’s economic viability, the Ramseur Main Street Merchants Association has donated $10,000 to provide a solid foundation for the fund. “We couldn’t think of a more appropriate way to give back to the Ramseur community than to make this long-term investment in community and economic development,” stated outgoing RMSMA president Carol Akers.“The Ramseur STEP team wanted an opportunity to influence future economic growth in the community,” said STEP team coordinator Kevin Franklin. “The Ramseur Community Fund can be that vehicle, while also providing an opportunity for residents and former residents to give back to the community in a meaningful way.” To make a donation to The Ramseur Community Fund Endowment simply make your check out to “The Ramseur Community Fund” and mail it to: NC Community Foundation, 4601 Six Forks Road, Ste. 524, Raleigh, NC 27609, or visit our website www.nccommunityfoundation.org to make an online contribution.

Jan 2015 BBQ Restaurant Comes To Liberty

Well I had the pleasure to sit down with three generations of some great ladies to hear the stories behind Beaver Creek BBQ. The story started with a phone call from local Christy Lackey Gilland to stop in and discuss placing their new restaurant in the newspaper. Thats when the great stories started unfolding. To cut to the chase, Steak N Pizza that has been in Liberty for numerous years shut down a few weeks ago. That is when Christy Lackey Gilland decided to step out and open up another Beaver Creek BBQ. Well there was a little gently push by her daughter Ashely and then a little pull by mom and dad ( Mike and Robin Lackey which owns the original Beaver Creek BBQ restaurant and catering food truck out of Prospect Hill, NC.) All of us knows about the great BBQ from these folks. From wedding to reunions you have probably had your chance to taste some of their great BBQ. One of the secrets to the great food is a Secret Recipe handed down from a local lady, Mary McMasters. They have not changed a thing to the recipe to date and several buy it by the gallon. So on to the story on the Liberty location. Several know Christy Lackey Gilland from maybe watching a local softball game, one of her favorite hobbies. You may even know her from her bus driving at ERHS or substitute teaching spots at the schools. You see Christy started out with her first job at Steak N Pizza and was employed there for 18 years. She is currently working at a bus driver and substitute teacher at ERHS. They have some great things to bring to the table at the new Liberty location such as FREE WIFI, daily specials for the hot bar and of course great BBQ. They will be offering the dining area on Sundays to be rented for local church dinners, birth parties, reunions and etch. They will even provide all you need for a birthday party if needed. They have a separate meeting area. Christy commented , “There is a building in Liberty that I watched be built from the ground up 21 years ago.....how do I know this you ask? It was built the same year my son was born, in fact he was only a week old the night they opened their door to the little town of Liberty. The owners moved from the other end of town and it was a big move! I worked for them for almost 18 years and loved the people that came in and shared their stories. I watched a lot of kids come through the doors only to find them in high school while working in the school. Steak n Pizza hit hard times and could no longer keep the doors open and now dreams are becoming a reality....we will now be moving into this empty building to share our love of food and service to the people of Liberty and surrounding areas. Coming soon…. BEAVER CREEK BBQ.” Besides softball and cooking I asked Christy if she had any other hobbies. She stated , “ Family time, spending time with my husband Darrell which is my Mr Fix It, my daughter Ashley which is my side kick and of course my son Cody which I guess his job is my food taste tester, hahaha. “ I asked Christy if she had any role models. “My parents with out a doubt. They taught me work ethics and also taught me to walk a tight line,” she added. I also inquired if she had any good advice to share. She replied, “Dreams do come true. If it is meant to be, it will be.” The new restaurant will accept cash and credit but no checks. So they hope to be open by mid January. Watch the Liberty Leader on Facebook or our website for opening dates and more details. - by Kevin Bowman

Patterson Cottage Museum Corner By -Brenda Heindl, Committee Member We are grateful for the response to last month’s article about the Liberty Chair Company. Mark Holder donated a chair made at the Liberty Chair Company. A photo of the chair is included with this article, and judging from the tag on the base of the chair, it could date from the 1930s or 1940s. A quandary that arose from the various styles of chairs we were told about was whether the Liberty Chair Company ever had a catalog. Do you or any of your family members remember any catalogs that the Liberty Chair Company produced? Do you know of anyone who has a catalog? Another chair and furniture company here in Liberty was the Gregson Furniture Company established in 1921 (photo included with article). It was founded by Barney Gregson, but changed hands to Elton Stout in 1936. When Elton Stout became the owner, the name was changed to the Stout Chair Company. Barney Gregson established the Gregson Manufacturing Company and went into production of school chairs and other office furniture. Have you ever seen pieces made at the Stout Chair Company or Gregson Manufacturing? Also, a special thanks to the Rose Garden Club for decorating the Patterson Cottage this holiday season. If you have not had a chance to see the Cottage in its festive attire, be sure to go by before January 2nd! SUPPORT YOUR COMMUNITY! Become a Friend of the Patterson Cottage, or sign a friend or family member up, and support your community. We have started a fundraising campaign to support the outreach efforts of the museum, conservation and protection of the collections, and preservation of the Patterson Cottage. E-mail pattersoncottage@gmail.com to receive a form or stop by the Liberty Town Hall to pick one up. Help preserve your community through its history! Jan 2015 Another Restaurant Springs Up In Liberty - Dogwood Bistro Dogwood Bistro, LLC is set to open up on Feb 14 here in our great town. So excited to see all the things they have planned. Located in the building known by locals as Liberty Drive In and was former location of Basils before its move wil be home to this new location. The address is 766 S Greensboro St, Liberty. Their venue is new american with a bar and grill. The owners are busy doing their background work and obtaining their ABC permit. As they stated North Carolina is the best place to live in with beauty from seal to the highest hills. Dogwood Bistro will use local farmers for all their food. Their goal to start out is to use Liberty providers first. Then they will move to close by farmers in the county. Their ultimate goal that I am excited about is to not leave the state and bring farm to the table. Be on the look out as more great news of this business unfolds. On the one motto I see they have I wish more of us took to heart is , “Grow local, eat local and support local. - By Kevin Bowman

This is the real deal, folks. It's music steeped in the legacy of the Louvin Brothers, Johnny Cash, Marty Robbins, Hank Williams, Sr. and others. Having toured with the late Don Helms and with Merle Haggard, these 20-something siblings are as authentic as stone-ground grits - and more fun than hush puppies and corn pudding. If you're not a die-hard fan when you walk in, you will be by the time you leave.

Liberty Legion Post Honors Locals I love this time of the year, when I get to attend the Liberty Legion Post 81 annual Christmas Program. For starters it is to see so many of the locals and catch up with them but also to be in the presence of people that gave of their selves to serve our country. The second would be to get to hear the great stories told about the people that received the awards for Local Heros of the Year. The Legion puts on an outstanding spread of food to decor. Cary McMaster lead the program after Commander Ritchie York gave a welcome to all. Chaplin Henry Galary gave the invocation. The most moving thing of the night is the silent table set up with the guest of honor being the POW/MIA. The following received awards for the 2014 year, Liberty Police Law Officer of the year- Officer Hubert Elder, Randolph Co Sherriff of the Year - Det. Todd Blakley, Firemen of the Year - Staley Dept- Michael Soheili, Liberty Dept - Capt Phillip Dickens and Julian Dept - Caleb Chilton, Randolph Co Honor Guard was presented an award also. If you see any of these guys, make sure to thank them for their service to their community. A special recognition was given to retiring Liberty Fire Chief J R Beard who also served his country greatly in the war. Pictured above is J R Beard received award from Cary McMaster and also pictured below is all the recipients.

TIPS TO KEEP YOUR CHILDREN PROTECTED ON SOCIAL MEDIA

Instagram 1.The most popular app out there! Make sure your child’s locations services are off and that the photo map isn’t posting their location. 2.Make sure your children understand they need to keep their profile secure and private (don’t accept friend requests from strangers!) Encourage “spring cleaning “and advise them that the only way to get someone to “unfollow” them is to block them. Snapchat 1.Kids need to understand the functionality of the app and that the pics/materials do not actually disappear. You may think the pictures you send are only visible for seconds, when in fact they are stored and available for hackers. 2.There are other apps like snapsave and snap grab that save all of this material and no one knows that the pics were captured Photo Vault/Ky-Calc (Hidden Pics/Video Calculator) 1.These are the two most popular apps used to hide inappropriate photos and videos. 2.Both are password protected. The way to delete the content off of your child’s phone is to delete the app. Vine 1.6 second videos that continually loop is all the craze these days. But they pose a dangerous threat. 2.Widely unknown is that there are a large number of porn stars on the app with tens of millions of followers. They often post inappropriate videos and pics that can be viewed by your children. An ordinary search for a funny video can turn up sexual or vulgar footage. Tumblr 1.Tumblr became popular, especially when the first “anonymous type” apps came out because of the option to post anonymous comments, but the option is there to take that type of post away. 2.The biggest use of Tumblr now is the back side “Blog” of Tumblr. If you Google Tumblr/ plus any inappropriate word or phrase, you will come up with pics and videos. This unfortunately is used to expose youth to pornogrpahy. Twitter 1.Twitter is still popular with young adults. It provides open access to famous people, porn stars and a lot of inappropriate content. A quick search for a specific hashtag can return inappropriate results from millions of users across the world. 2. The important fact here is figuring out how to lock your child’s profile and make sure you can control who follows your child and what content they are going to be exposed to while online. Facebook 1.Losing popularity with our youth (more so because all adults are on it now!) the teachable moment here is how open is your content to the public. All content or comments posted become the property of Facebook, so we need to teach our kids how to control their “Digital Footprint”. 2.Facebook now owns Instagram. This is very important to keep in mind because all of the pics, comments or inappropriate interaction can be saved

Home Health and Case Management top the list of Randolph Hospital Volunteer Services Board grant recipients for 2015. The full list was announced in early December and shows more than $16,000 awarded for various needs throughout Randolph Hospital. This money will help pay for everything from medication assistance for uninsured patients, emergency relief funds and the music therapy program to shampoo caps and newspapers for patients. The Human Race also received a donation and nearly $1,500 was awarded to Randolph Community College in the form of a pair of scholarships for students studying medical office administration. The Volunteer Services Board raises the money through several fundraisers held during the year. Some of the larger fundraisers include the First Uniform sale, the Books Are Fun event, the Cline Classics (costume jewelry and low-cost gifts) sale, the Holiday Craft Show and a pair of volunteer bake sales. More than 140 people, including teens, volunteer at least one, four-hour shift a week at Randolph Hospital, but Sylvia Beamer, Director of Volunteer Services, said she’s always looking for more help. In 2013, volunteers combined for more than 41,000 hours, equal to 22 full-time employees.“Our volunteers are committed to enhancing patient experience,” Beamer said. There are many ways to get involved and several benefits to volunteering. Yes, Unbeliever, There is a Messiah

By: Andy Clapp Dear Pastor, I am an unbeliever. Many people say that God is a myth and that Jesus was only a good man, no more, no less and give good reasons for such unbelief. They say that there is no need for God or a Messiah. Please tell me the truth, is Jesus the Messiah? Sincerely, Unbeliever —Everytown, USA Unbeliever, you have been told a lie and have unfortunately believed it. You have been affected by the age of reason in an “intellectual” time. Many only believe in that which they can reason and that which they can see. They think that no one and nothing can be greater than themselves, deifying themselves in the process. The claim is that believers are simple-minded but true wisdom comes not from a textbook or from some philosopher; it can only come from the One who created all things. Yes, Unbeliever, there is a Messiah, a Savior of the world. He has existed before the creation of the world and is as real as you and I. His love is seen in the manger in Bethlehem and the cross at Calvary. He is seen throughout His creation, leaving man without excuse. How hopeless would life be if there was no Christ? It would be as hopeless as life without any faith! There would only be an ever-decreasing existence that slipped away as quickly as sands in an hourglass. There would be a definitive end when the last breath was drawn on this earth, rendering every human action and venture pointless. Without Jesus Christ, the Light of this world, the darkness would suffocate all of us in a more rapid fashion. Not believe in Jesus Christ! You might as well not believe in miracles or ever hope for one! You can set out every intellectual in this world but they cannot explain why some things happen, the truly miraculous that is not explainable by logic or reason. If most of the world says that there is no Messiah, does that remove the Lord from His throne? Not at all. His place is not dictated by the acceptance or rejection of man, otherwise He would be a creation of man rather than the Creator of humankind. Atheists can fight for the removal of every nativity scene throughout the nation but that will never remove the sovereignty of God over all the world. Though we cannot see Him, He is real just as some of the most powerful forces in this world and beyond that are unseen, such as love, hope, and faith. You can hypothesize how this world came into being and how man was created. You can accept theories such as the Big Bang Theory and evolution but there is one question that these theories cannot answer. Why? Why are we here? If there is no God, there would be no point in living. If there were no Messiah, we have no hope for tomorrow. Furthermore, there would be no reason to celebrate Christmas at all. Without Christ, December 25th is just another day on the calendar. No Jesus Christ as Messiah? Thank God for Christ and that Christ is alive forevermore! Thank God that we have a reason to celebrate this season and live in hope! His birth is why we celebrate and though the world has sought to push Him out of the season, believers will always have Christ as the centerpiece of the Christmas. A million years from now, He will still be the Messiah and will continue to love each and every one of us, regardless of who we are or what we have done. Yes, there is a Messiah, a Savior of the world, and that which began in Bethlehem continues today. God came to earth to be with man, and He is still with us today.
