GRACIE BAXTER EARNS GIRL SCOUTS’ HIGHEST HONOR Girl Scout Carolinas Peaks to Piedmont is pleased to announce that Gracie Serenity Baxter, Cedar Falls, earned her Girl Scout Gold Award, the highest award in Girl Scouting. Baxter, daughter of Phillip and Karen Branch and a member of Troop 40977, created gift baskets for Randolph Hospital to give out to patients and their families during their stay. By earning the Girl Scout Gold Award, Baxter has become a community leader. Her accomplishments reflect leadership and citizenship skills that set her apart.

A room filled with patriots during a week that would not be forgotten, those men committed an act of treason, willing to sacrifice their lives to be free. What began in July of 1776 continues today, the echo of their voices resounding in the hearts of men, women, and children over two hundred years later. The Declaration of Independence was signed, each signature representing colonies who would settle for nothing less than freedom. In the Declaration, Thomas Jefferson penned these words that have been the catalyst for our men and women in the military since that moment – “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.” Driven by the freedom provided, men and women have sacrificed it all so that we can speak freely, live passionately, and aspire to heights never reached before. Each day, we are protected to live free during our time on this earth. We must never forget the freedoms provided by those who committed treason, by those who began a revolution, and those who have protected our independence ever since. Only those who are lacking in perspective neglect to remain thankful for what they have been provided. Just as they sacrificed so we could be free in this nation, we thank God that Christ has set us free for eternity. Jesus said, “If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” (John 8:31-32 NKJV) He clarified shortly thereafter, “Therefore if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed.” (John 8:36 NKJV) The truth sets us free for eternity, that truth being Jesus Christ. Jesus identified Himself as the truth in John 14:6, giving even more direction for those in bondage to find the independence the soul longs to find. Christ set us free from the debt of our sins, paying that debt on the cross, dying to bring us life, forgiveness, salvation, and redemption. The life He gives sets us free from the hopelessness of the world, reminding us that everlasting life is His gift, freely given to those who follow Him. The bondage of sin no longer has us shackled as Christ broke those chains forever. We are set free from worry, as the Lord is our shelter and our provider. We are set free from the shifting standards of the world as we live by the eternal standard set by Jesus Christ, the absolute Truth for all generations. As we celebrate Independence Day, we should remember how we gained our freedom, the price many have paid over time to ensure our freedom, and how those freedoms can be taken away at any moment. July 2016 2016 100 Man Dental Clinic The annual 2016 100 Man Free Dental Clinic was held on June 3rd 2016 at the Liberty Fire Department with 33 clients being seen for much needed fillings, extractions or cleanings. Clients, if you were not able to be seen this year, please remember the first week of June next year. Sign up for 2017 will begin in March. Thank you to our volunteering dentist, Dr. Chip Butler, Dr. Neil Morrison being assisted by Renee Brady, Melissa Jackson, Patricia Redding, Hygienist, our Baptist Mission Van employees as well as the seventeen 100 Man Volunteers. This project would not be possible without your assistance. A delicious luncheon was furnished for the volunteers by our close friends at Capri’s, who have served us for the past three years. Thank you to Capri’s for your loyalty. Also, our friends at Sammy’s Catering in Staley served us breakfast and a big thank you to you also. Another big thank you to the Liberty Leader, Kevin Bowman for it’s wonderful coverage allowing the people of the Liberty, Staley and surrounding areas to know about our projects as they happen. The next SALT (Seniors and Law Enforcement Together) meeting will be held at 2:00pm, Wednesday, July 20 at the Roy C. Reitzel Center/Senior Center, 128 S. Fayetteville St., in Liberty. Guest speaker for this meeting will be Sheriff Robert A. Graves. Please come out to meet the Sheriff, and hear his vision for Randolph County and the Sheriff’s Office. Sheriff Graves has been working tirelessly since taking office, engaging the community in conversations about making our county better and safer. All SALT meetings are open to the public of all ages. SALT is an organization that brings law enforcement agencies, businesses, community representatives, and older citizens together, in order to make Randolph County a safer place. The purpose is to develop, expand, and implement effective crime prevention and education programs for older community members, however, everyone in the community is welcome at meetings, and can benefit from the programs and activities of SALT. Our programs and activities center around prevention of victimization, overall safety and well-being, as well as what to do if something does happen to you.

“Pathway to Freedom” Begins 22nd Season July 7

“Pathway to Freedom,” a unique, exciting historical drama, will open its 22nd season on July 7th at the Snow Camp Outdoor Theatre. The play will run for twelve performances through August 6, at 8:00 PM. “Pathway to Freedom” is based on the work of the Underground Railroad in this region. Enslaved people, aided by whites like Quaker Levi Coffin, made dangerous, clandestine escapes from captivity and headed for free territory. Resistance to slavery in North Carolina is a story that has not been fully told. The compelling drama of “Pathway to Freedom opens the door to more awareness and better understanding of this epic history. “Pathway to Freedom” is directed by James Shields, back for his eighth season in the cast and first season at the helm. The play was written by Mark Sumner and premiered in Snow Camp in 1994. The “Pathway”was marked by secretive and dangerous journeys. Operating mostly at night, away from the main roads, escapees and guides moved cautiously through the woods, across the rivers and mountains to free territory. Some traveled as far away as Canada. All the way they were hunted by slavecatchers with guns and bloodhounds, backed by the hated Fugitive Slave Law. Besides “Pathway,” the Theatre will also present children’s shows Wednesday and Saturday, July 16 through August 3: “The Pirate Prince,” and “The Golden Apple: A Fairytale Mystery.” Tickets for Pathway are priced from $16 for adults to $10 for groups of 15.For the children’s shows: Adults $8, children $5. Drama Camp Offered at Snow Camp Outdoor Theatre
A full-day, two-week drama camp will be offered at the Snow Camp Outdoor Theatre, from July 11-15 & 18-22 “This exciting camp experience will put campers right in the middle of a professional theatre,” said Jessica Nunn, Operations Manager of the Outdoor Theatre. “There they will learn a multitude of skills from the on-site actors, directors, and various technicians. The resident company will be rehearsing and presenting our live play, ‘Pathway to Freedom,’ beginning July 7. This will be the 22nd season for ‘Pathway.'” Campers will be expose to a wide range of theatre skills, from acting and improv, to mask-making and stage combat. All their skills will come together in the campers’ own final productions on their final day, July 22. A Treasure Hidden In Siler City Story Submitted By A Reader
The Farmer’s Alliance located in downtown Siler City, first opened its doors for business in December of 1888. While much of the rest of the face of downtown Siler City has changed, the Farmers Alliance Corporation has always remained in the same location of what is now 324 S. Chatham Avenue. This small piece of the community couldn’t be more charming, with its picture windows and garden plants adorning the front of the store. Stockholders own the Farmer’s Alliance and are composed of farmers and nonfarmers. In the early days, it was required that all members were farmers and belonged to an Alliance Lodge. The store operated on the barter system for many years. The internal aisles are stocked with all kinds of useful, interesting and nostalgic items. Some of the items that catch the eye upon entering include Siler City t-shirts, old-fashioned stick candy, carpenter bee traps, aprons. And moving towards the back, old-fashioned soap, canned goods, golden honey, an array of bulk seeds in brown paper sacks, and so much more. History buffs will also find a lot to look at, newspaper clippings and photographs of Siler City and Farmer’s Alliance historical events, documentation of memorable local sports events, and photos of the downtown prior to the age of the automobile. Ken McPherson, Interim Manager for the business since 2014, was kind enough to talk to NC Online News about the history of the Farmer’s Alliance and the goods that it currently offers. He took the position of Interim Manager following the retirement of Nancy Tysor, an employee for over 50 years and a manager since 1975. Mr. McPherson said that the Farmer’s Alliance continues to ensure that they carry many of the items that they have carried for years. There is a large selection of sports clothes, western wear, seeds, garden products, and insecticides. He explained that the store is not there to compete with other businesses, but to serve the customers by providing them with quality merchandise. The Farmer’s Alliance also carries products that are made in North Carolina. Some of the items produced in NC include canned goods, jellies, local honey, seeds, women’s undergarments and gowns. Additionally, a number of items are made in the USA, including overalls made in Tennessee and boots made in Wisconsin. People come from out-of-state to purchase overalls from the Farmer’s Alliance which are offered in sizes extra small to extra large. Hoop cheese is a popular item that is sold year-round and shipped out all over the country during the holiday season. Popular novelty items include Happy Home Flavoring and old Rawleigh Products. Store Hours are Monday through Friday, 8:30 am to 5:30 pm and 8:30 to 4:00 pm on Saturdays.

New Restaurant In Liberty 2 Sisters Cafe First of July I was officially told my the sisters they will be open for business. This would be the 2 Sisters Cafe with their Home Style Cooking. The restaurant is located at 766 S Greensboro St in Liberty in the what locals remember as Liberty Drive In. The new owners are sisters Rhonda Sherrill and Cricket Patrick . Cricket said my husband Kevin Patrick is an owner and has been a great support. These young ladies are from Pleasant Garden area and their energy and excitement is awesome. They plan on having their soft opening first of July and first of August a Grand Opening. They will be operating Tuesday through Sunday. At start they will be serving breakfast and lunch with their house 6am to 2:30pm. Rhonda shared with me they are wanting to bring back old times home cooking. Randolph Cancer Center Offers Free Oral Cancer Screenings Close to 48,250 Americans will be diagnosed with oral or pharyngeal cancer this year. It will cause over 9,575 deaths, killing roughly 1 person per hour, 24 hours per day. These cancers affect the mouth and throat and mortality rates are high because oral cancers are typically found in the later stages of the disease. This is why on Thursday, August 11th, a free oral cancer screening from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. will be conducted at Randolph Cancer Center located at 373 North Fayetteville Street in Asheboro. Drs. Marina Bonaventura and William Milner will examine participants’ gums, mouth, salivary glands, tongue and lips for signs of various oral cancers. People who are experiencing sores or lesions in the mouth, thickening of the cheeks or white/ red patches in the mouth should register for this free oral screening. Often these cancers develop because of prolonged alcohol or tobacco use, a poor diet, Human papillomavirus (HPV), a weakened immune system, heartburn, genetic syndromes and/or work hazards. The best solution for beating oral cancers is early detection. If you or someone you know is at risk for oral cancer, this screening is imperative. Space is limited and appointments are required. Ramseur Chamber of Commerce Adopts New Name and Expands Its Reach Supporting Businesses in Eastern Randolph County is a New Focus for the Chamber. The Ramseur Chamber of Commerce has been renamed: Ramseur/Eastern Randolph Area Chamber of Commerce and is reaching out to offer support to businesses on the eastern side of Randolph County. The Chamber will representation and support all business within Randolph County, but will focus on supporting the communities of Ramseur, Staley, Coleridge, Bennett, Cedar Falls, Grays Chapel,Franklinville and surrounding areas. “Our members benefit from the Chamber’s support,” said Gary Bean, President of the Ramseur/Eastern Randolph Area Chamber of Commerce. “There are growth opportunities for businesses in these new areas and we welcome new members who would like the kind of support that helps strengthen their businesses.” As the Chamber leadership looked at opportunities for growth for its members and for the Chamber, the need for a new name was addressed. “We added Eastern Randolph to our name so businesses in this area knew the Chamber was intentional about inviting them to become Chamber members,” commented Gary Bean. With an expanded name and new logo, the Ramseur/ Eastern Randolph Area Chamber of Commerce covers a larger geographic area and welcomes new members and event sponsors.
