Great Piece Of History

Today I got to meet a new person and his name is Michael Garner. He has a business called Mike’s Memorabilia and uses it to celebrate black history. He lives just down the road from Liberty in the Rock Creek area of Alamance Co. He need a copy made of an old game dating back to 1936. Above you will see the game board. Inside the tube from where we made a copy of the origin game was the pieces that reminded me of a rubber dart with feathers. Here is some of the info about the game. “The Turkey Doodle Game” is an interesting piece of Radio and Black American History. Dated 1936, The Turkey Doodle Game lists the characters portrayed on the Jimmy Scribner Radio Show called The Johnson Family. Widely popular even in the Black Community , Jimmy based these characters on real people in the community of which he grew up Clips of the Radio Show can be found on You Tube. I hope me an Michael can start sharing a piece of history each month in the paper. Be on the look out for more history.

Meridian Waste’s First-Ever Fishing Rodeo Lassos A Huge Crowd

Local company secures 80 cubic feet of donated food supplies for the E.M. Holt Elementary School’s Backpack Program

Liberty, NC - April 15, 2024: Meridian Waste North Carolina, LLC, a nonhazardous, integrated solid waste services company, held its inaugural Fishing Rodeo and Fun Fest on Saturday, April 13 at Tri-Corners C&D Landfill in Alamance County, North Carolina, 5833 Foster Store Road in Liberty. Meridian Waste purchased the Construction and Demolition (C&D) landfill, formerly known as Coble’s Sandrock, in September 2023 and made a pledge to the community that the business would be a strong and dedicated community partner. The recent fundraising event proved to be a great success.

Fishing rodeo participant gets his fish measured by judge and Area President, Patrick Messinger

The Tri-Corners Landfill Fishing Rodeo and Fun Fest concept was initially created by Deanna Martin, General Manager of Meridian Waste’s Triad Hauling operations, with Jenny Gum, top sales representative for Triad Hauling and Tri-Corners Landfill. Martin and Gum are the daughters of Kent and Brenda Coble, former owners of the landfill and hauling companies. The sisters remained on staff after the sale of the landfill and hauling assets to Meridian Waste. Martin and Gum, along with Tri-Corners Landfill Manager, Josh Gustaf, hosted the free community event to bring neighbors and community members to the disposal facility for a better understanding of how the landfill operates. And they provided informative tours about the essential disposal operations that serve the quickly growing Triad region. The fun day demonstrated the many natural attributes of the landfill property including a well-stocked fishing lake and rolling pasture lands to catch fish, and many more activities. The family-friendly event included a competitive fishing rodeo, a

interactive yellow iron video simulator for driving and operating earth moving equipment, inflatable children’s games, a mechanical bull, face painting, bubble station, field amusements, and a free Zack’s hot dog lunch for all attendees.

“I was so pleased by the positive response to this first-ever event in Alamance County where Meridian Waste is an involved and positive new neighbor,” said Patrick Messinger, Meridian Waste’s Area President. “We served 755 picnic lunches to guests, gave away hundreds of children’s Earth Day gift bags, and awarded multiple fishing rodeo prizes by age groups,” he said. “Games included fun

competitions for the longest, heaviest, and smallest fish, and raffle prizes. We appreciate the gracious thanks from participants who had the opportunity to enjoy the great outdoors in advance of Earth Day,” said Messinger. “Our goal was to share the vital services we provide to properly manage construction and demolition debris materials generated in the County and throughout the region in a responsible manner. We can’t wait for our Tri-Corners Fall 2024 community event to focus on a Pick-Your-Pumpkin Patch and other ‘surprise’ activities.“ In addition to providing a free community event, The TriCorner’s Fishing Rodeo and Fun Fest was as a fundraiser for the E.M. Holt Elementary School’s Backpack program securing much needed food donations for under-served children. The backpack program produced 80 cubic feet of donated food supplies for children who may otherwise go without a structured meal while not in school. backpacks, children were ensured con food. Recipients included low income children with some homeless youngsters as beneficiaries. Thought For Every Day

Common Ground

It may appear this month that I am veering off the topic for this column. This column is all about our town, how it is changing as the Toyota Megasite comes to be, and how to neatly mesh the old and the new. But follow along with me and I promise you’ll see the connection.

We have already established the well-known fact that our town is what it is because of its people–both past and present. There is a group of very important people whose names newcomers may not know. A group of people who have served in a way that our town can neither forget nor repay. This list of names can be found at 443 W. Swannanoa Avenue in Liberty and I encourage those who aren’t familiar with this list of names to take time to stop for a visit.

This is the location of the Liberty Veterans Memorial Garden, where one can find the names of veterans from our community who have served our country.

Each of these names has a story to tell tied to their military service. I am the daughter and granddaughter to names that are on this memorial and so very proud of what my father and grandfathers were willing to sacrifice for our country. But as Memorial Day approaches, I ask that you pay close attention to those whose engravings include KIA beside their names. Those are the ones who never returned home. For newcomers to our are, let me tell you about one of those names–William Prather York.

Prather, as he was known to his family and friends, graduated from Liberty High School (current location of Liberty Elementary School) in 1967. After high school he entered the Marine Corps where he completed basic training at Parris Island, SC. After a brief period at Camp Lejeune, NC, Prather, the young boy from small town Liberty found himself in Vietnam. He served our country until April 19, 1968 when he was killed in action from artillery fire. His name can be found on panel 521E line 004 of the Vietnam Wall in Washington, DC.

April 20

In a recent survey provided to the citizens of our town, it was noted that one of the biggest concerns citizens had with current changes was the loss of our small town feel. I believe that one important way not to lose that small town feel is to share the important things with newcomers of what makes our small town what it is–such as the pride our town has for those who left the familiarity of home to serve our country and the legacies left by people like William Prather York who never returned.

You see, you don’t have to have personally known William Prather York to respect the legacy he left behind. Prather passed away almost a decade before I was born. But I learned who he was and what he gave because my dad shared his story with me. I learned that Prather was more than just a name on a wall. He was a good kid-the good guy that a parent can only hope their son grows up to be. And just like many other names at 443 W. Swannanoa Avenue, Prather went off to serve his country, but he is a name that never came back.

I recently thought about Prather York while working with the Triad Honor Flight. As the coordinator for the Honor Flight’s Welcome Home Celebration at PTI Airport, it was my job to help ensure the veterans on that flight were welcomed home in the most deserving of ways. As I watched three World War II veterans being wheeled thru the cheering crowd, followed by Korean War vets, Vietnam vets, and Cold War vets, I saw veterans with smiles and tears, astonished that so many people would gather to welcome them home. It brought out all the emotions in both the veterans and the crowd. I thought about those, like my own father, who did not receive that type of welcome when they returned from service. And as the bagpipers played, I thought about those who did not return at all. Young men like Liberty’s own William Prather York.

In a world where news headlines are dim and grim, where division runs deep and disagreements are many, I encourage you to take time to remember what gratitude and honor we owe those willing to sacrifice it all for our country. Swing by 443 W. Swannanoa Avenue and see the list of names of our areas bravest and give a special thank you to the ones like Prather this Memorial Day, knowing their legacy is more than just a name on a wall.

Triad Honor Flight gives veterans a day of honor by providing them with a one-day trip to Washington, DC to see memorials and monuments and to visit and lay a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery. Veterans are given first-class treatment for the day and honored as the heroes they are before returning home to a huge Welcome Home Celebration at the airport. If you would like more information about Triad Honor Flight, how to apply as a veteran or a guardian, or how to make a much appreciated donation, check out the website at triadhonor 2, 2024. If you would like to volunteer to help out with the morning send off or the evening welcome home, please contact me at robinbkirkman@gmail.com.
