Liberty Association Of Churches Hosts Liberty Town Easter Egg Hunt It so exciting to see the Town Egg Hunt to be run and organized by the Liberty Association of Churches. Just another example of the One Church movement. For we serve One God and He wants all our churches to part of the One Big Church. This years event will be held at Liberty Elem School on the football field on Saturday March 28 from 10am to Noon. There is so much magic in the air. As you can see from the ad below this will be a magical Easter Egg Hunt. With over 5,000 eggs to games, food and music there is something for everyone. Flip to page two for more great details.

(continued) At 10am the event kicks off with local churches and community providing great venue of activity. From a rock climbing wall (a 28 feet of pure fun.) , games and area attractions. Invites are out for some fire truck to police cars to see and maybe even a race car. Lots of goodies to snack on from corn dogs, drinks, cotton candy, popcorn and candy. At 10:30am you can see “Fish The Magish” and the easter story. Fish The Magish is a Christian Comedian and Illusionist. He will be connecting the kids and adults to the love of Christ. There will be some great music by a local favorite, Keith Bartell. At 11:30am the Easter Egg Hunt of over 5,000 eggs will begin. They will be divided up in Preschool to Kindergarten, 1st to 3rd graders, and 4th to 6th graders each having their own section. Dividing these kids up keeps everyone safe so no bigger kids run over the smaller ones. They will have plenty of volunteers on hand plus 2 off duty police officers. This is just another great function the Liberty Association Of Churches provides in our area. I can not wait to see all the churches and community out on the field that Saturday.

Get Your Ticket Soon Liberty Chamber Annual Winter Luncheon This annual networking event of the Chamber is always a favorite. This years event was hosted by The Church of God and the wonderful ladies of the church. Their theme was similar to Olive Garden but called Love Garden and in my opinion out did them. The ladies of the church provided homemade potato soup and vegetable beef soup, with salad and garlic bread. The Desserts‌ oh my!!! Home run!! The meeting was a great networking time. All business had a chance to be recognized and share what they do. Don Herndon the Chamber President gave a snap shot of all the things that the Chamber accomplished in the community and for local business with the help of the business that have joined the chamber. The Chamber had a great slide show going showing highlights of the past year. Gwen Day, Board member and Church of God, welcome everyone. The guest was shown the new Chamber website was shown. RCC Foundation Seeks High School Leadership Participants The Randolph Community College Foundation is seeking applicants for its second annual High School Leadership Academy, a leadership development program for rising ninth graders. The Randolph Community College High School Leadership Academy, which is modeled after RCC’s college-level Student Leadership Academy, will be a one-day event that will focus on topics such as the definition of leadership; team building; personality types and leadership styles; social media, communication and leadership; conflict resolution; situational leadership; and servant leadership, according to Lorie McCroskey, RCC’s director of development. Rising freshmen who live and will attend school in Randolph County in the fall of 2015 and are in good academic standing are eligible to apply. The Academy will take place from 8:30 a.m.-6 p.m. on Tuesday, June 16, at the Foundation Conference Center on the Asheboro Campus.Interested students must complete an application form available from middle school counselors or at the Foundation office, write a brief essay on leadership, and submit two reference letters. The Ramseur Area Civitan Club will hold a St. Patrick’s Day Seek Meeting at 7 p.m., on Tuesday, March 17, in the First Christian Church fellowship hall, 1381 Church St., Ramseur. A free meal, including traditional Irish dishes, drinks and desserts will be served. During the evening, guests will learn about the club’s past achievements and future goals. Members of the club volunteer regularly to help others in the community through a range of charity projects, including special treats for the local elementary school EC classes, a group home cookout and Christmas party, the N.C. Adopt a Highway program, Fill the Truck events for the Ramseur Food Pantry, Craven Deer Processing, Special Olympics, clothing for the needy and the STEP economic development program. The Ramseur club was chartered four years ago. Civitan clubs have a three-fold purpose: Service, knowledge and fellowship. Its major emphasis is on helping people with developmental disabilities and providing for those in need in the community. Soup Bowl Fundraiser RAMSEUR - The Ramseur Area Civi9tan Club will host a Soup Bowl Saturday fundraiser on Saturday, March 7, from 12-3 p.m., at the First Christian Church fellowship hall, 1381 Church St., Ramseur. With each $10 donations, diners will receive their choice of a Seagrove area hand-crafted soup bowl filled to the brim with homemade soup. March 2015 RCC’s first-ever ‘Small Town’ Documentary Gallery
Randolph Community College Department of Photographic Technology, in collaboration with the town of Liberty, will present a gallery showing featuring the work of a week-long documentary project entitled Small Town, Liberty. Each year, the graduating class will focus on one small town in North Carolina to document for an entire week. In 2015, the class visited Liberty, North Carolina, during the week of February 16 through February 22. The first ever Small Town, North Carolina documentary is a collaborative photography project that includes work from thirteen RCC photojournalism students as they spent seven days exploring the town of Liberty and the people who call it home. “The students have taken on the challenge of documenting a week of Liberty by researching stories and connecting with a family, business, organization, or small community and creating a more in-depth story,” says instructor Abbi O’Leary. The gallery show opening will be held on Wednesday, March 4, from 5:00-7:00 p.m. at the Liberty Public Library, located at 239 South Fayetteville Street. The event is free and open to the public. Small Town, Liberty will be on display through the end of May on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays (9:00 a.m. through 5:00 p.m.), Tuesdays (9:00 a.m. through 7:00 p.m.), and on Saturdays (9:00 a.m. through 1:00 p.m.). “The gallery display in the local library will highlight the photographs that capture the heart of Liberty and work together in telling its story,” says O’Leary. “The RCC photojournalism students have poured their hearts and efforts into sharing your story—the story of Liberty, NC, so please enjoy, share, and participate in the community collaboration.” RCC Photojournalism students involved in this project (listed with their hometowns) include the following: Sarah Martin - Asheboro Cate Gordon – Asheboro & Stoneville Erik Buxton – Asheboro Sarah Gillie – Eden Erin Mizelle – Trinity Tim Rossland – Greensboro Caleb Smallwood – Greensboro Zoe Zielinski – Kernersville Josh Komer – Charlotte Carol Anne Simchik - Winston–Salem Seth Combs - Winston–Salem Alex Tricoli – Summerfield Sarah Whelan – Waxhaw
A Great Man Retires From Liberty School I had the pleasure of sitting down with a man that has been a landmark in Liberty School. That would be none other than, Mr Melvin Parks, which has been the head building and grounds manager for Liberty Elem School for the past 14 years. I have had the pleasure of seeing this man in action over this time. From when my children attending school to me volunteering at the school, you always got to walk into a nice clean school from inside to out with everything always being in top condition. I have seen this man clean trash cans to moving the yard. I remember volunteering at the school and needing something and they say see Mr Parks. Mr Parks would go out of his way to make it happen and most of all , I remember his humble spirit and sweet smile. Well they do not make men like this any more. So lets get to know this man and see what created a man so unique as him. Melvin Parks has been at the school for 14 years but prior to that he was the General Manager at Klaussners in Asheboro over transportation maintenance, environmental and security. He fill that role for 32 years and only left due to downsizing. He will be enjoying some free time with his beautiful bride, Sadie Parks. Sadie is also retired from Randolph Co School System from Ramseur ES from being a teacher assistant. Both of these great folks has impacting many kids lives. Melvin’s oldest son lives out in Colorado now, due to job relocation, and travels all over as a Senior Engineer for Gates Rubber. I asked Mr Parks, what do they do and he says the pen I am holding to the plastics on my car all comes from this business. His middle son lost the battle to Lupus back in 1986. His youngest son still lives close by in Greensboro and is General Manager in the food industry. Looks like Mr Parks did a great job as a father installing things in his kids life's. He continued that legacy at Liberty school with the school kids. I asked Mr Parks what he would miss the most. He stated,” It would have to be the students. I love talking and seeing them each day. I make a point to encourage them as I speak to them as we pass in the halls or our paths cross. I try to give them words of encouragement. It is so nice to be out and have a kids come up to me and call my name.” He continued to say, “the staff will be the next missed part of the school. People do not realize it, but the staff is like a family. We all spend so much time together and share our lives together you build relationships. So the staff is like another type of family.” I asked Mr Parks what his days are like. He gave a big old smile, “well it starts at 4:20am when the alarm sounds and by 6am I’m here at the school to get the heat/ac and lights going. Then its the daily steps to keep the school running.” Wow, the behind the scenes we do not think of. He added, “My future days will be to work on my Honey To Do List and around my home and out buildings.” Looks like he is going to stay busy. After talking to Mr Parks, I realize my kids and all the kids that came through was blessed to have a man that planted seeds in kids lives by means of a kind word ,”keep good grades” to the work ethic he set as an example for kids to live by with his role model. As you can see I got to see Mr Parks on his last day of work, and he was out shoveling snow off the walks.

The first list of classes are posted for the Liberty residents from the NC STEP Grant funding Liberty received. After a year of meetings and planning with strategies groups made up of local Liberty citizens below is the first wave of classed being offered. A Blessing Of A Lady To Meet I had the hardest time coming up with the heading of this story and then I realized what the experience was should be the title. For after meeting Ruby Getter Golden, I realized I was blessed to have got to meet such a great lady. Ruby was born on August 12 in 1907, which makes her a young age of 107 (however she was a spry as a 80 year old). Ruby shared with me she was born in Clifton GA to Henry and Georgia Getter and was one of eleven children. She grew up in the profession of a share cropper and continued into her adult life. Later Ruby married Mr Robert Golden from Danberrry VA and they settled in at Pleasant Garden NC and she had nine wonderful children. Over the years Ruby has worked for the school systems and finally retiring after 45 years in that job. She share cropped on many farms in the triad area. She recalled working for the Millers, Wades, Smiths, Fields, Pattersons and many more, she chuckled at not being able to remember more, but at 107 she has a great memory. Better than I can say for myself. She also shared with me that she cared and took care of children and family member in also of these names she just mentioned. I was told it was no uncommon for Ruby to carry food to someone and make sure they has what they needed. Beulah Church on Beulah Church Rd (which is just up from her house in Liberty) benefited from her devotion to the church family and the Lord. Her constant unwavering FAITH she has brought many to know and trust the Lord God and Jesus Christ His Son. She taught them on how serving God can bless your life. Today she resides in the home place she raised five generations of children with her daughter Hazel Golden (78 years young) and Charlotte Golden her daughter in law from marriage to her son Roy. Charlotte has never left Ruby or Hazel. For you see this is a blessing , you see she has been a constant care giver 24 hours a day without complaint. When anything goes wrong or some people talk bad about Charlotte, they just say, “We need to keep praying for them and let GOD touch there heart that they see there wrong.” Wow, what an example. I was blessed to receive the phone call from Tonya Nesbit to consider a story on this great lady, Ruby. While speaking to Tonya she said, “Over the years since late 80’s I have been privileged to also be encouraged by the strength Ruby’s Faith can have on peoples life. Her example of a Servant Spirit has truly taught both Charlotte and myself the blessing of serving the Lord.” She also told me on Aug 27, 2010 that Beulah Church honored Ruby with Award Of Ministry. Today Ruby has 2 sisters still living, Gressy Brown who just turned 100 and Eurie Ann Davis who is 95. She also has three children Hazel Golden of Liberty, Ruth Coble of Staley and Annett Smith of Greensboro. Lets not forget her faithful and devoted daughter in law, Charlotte P Golden and I will through one in, her adopted daughter Tonya Nesbitt. After visiting with these awesome ladies, I came away rejuvenated and ready to take on the world. With the old saying you want people to see Christ more than they see you, well that is what happened when I met Ruby Getter Golden. Her love for the Lord shined Greatly. I told her thank you for letting me share her story and she said, “It is not my story it is my Saviors story, for I am just a tool blessed to be used by Him to help on this place called earth before I go to my real Home with Him.” I hope this story helps all of us step up to the plate to live a better life and live more for God than we do ourselves.

NERMS FFA Chartered
The NERMS FFA had their chartering ceremony on November 13th . The State FFA officers and our regional FFA coordinator, Mr. Horace Johnson conducted the ceremony along with the NERMS FFA officers. This ceremony gave us our charter to be recognized as a part of the North Carolina FFA Association and the National FFA Organization. We had 17 members sign our charter as well as our Principal, Mrs. Dana Albright-Johnson. Several parents and members of the community also attended the ceremony. This is just one of our first accomplishments in growing our program.

-Brenda Heindl, Committee Member Perhaps a unique feature of many of the objects in the collection at the Patterson Cottage is that they were donated with small stories about their history and who owned them. One such piece is a small, bone-handled fork with two tines. On a card is typed, “Belonged to the great aunt (her grandfather’s sister) of the donor, Mrs. Gordon (Lystra Frazier) Congleton.” The donor was Belle Curtis. Anne Lystra Frazier was born in 1893 in Randolph County and passed away in 1992. Forks have been in use at the table since the 1400s and 1500s in the West (and even earlier in some parts of the world), but it was not until the 1700s that they were more commonly used. The typed card states that the fork is over 200 years old, but it is hard to verify the age since two-tined forks were used through the 1800s. The four-tine forks that we are familiar with came into use in the early 1800s. Come by when we reopen in May to see this great object!

Karen Pfohl, RD, LDN, with Randolph Cancer Center, is holding a community seminar called Fight Cancer with Your Fork on Thursday, March 19, from 6:30 - 7:30 p.m. at Randolph Hospital. It’s designed to address these important issues. Specifically, Pfohl will center on eight truths that can help lower your risk of getting cancer. Included in the seminar are a brief cooking demonstration and a free tasting of all the prepared food. The 100 Man Project Update:
The 100 Man Project, Inc. met on February 6, 2015 at 10am at the Liberty Fire Department for our regular monthly meeting. There were twelve members present. The C.A.R.S. program has been very busy with 1305 miles being driven in January 2015. We are always in need of additional volunteers as drivers and invite you to call our Dispatcher at 622-5774 for more information. We also accept monetary donations at P O Box 83, Liberty, NC 27298. The Dental Van is scheduled to be in Liberty on June 5 th , 2015. We will start taking applications in March. The charge per patient is $7.00. Contact Kaffy Reynolds at 622-5774 for more information. Remember the Reading Program is continuing at the Liberty Library and Liberty School. Be sure your child registers for this program when checking out a book. Simple Steps to Seed Starting Success
By Melinda Myers Get a jump on the growing season by starting your favorite or hard to find plants indoors from seeds. Starting hard to find plants, like many of the heirloom or newly introduced varieties, from seed may be the only way you will be able to add these to your garden. Plus, you’ll be extending the growing season and bringing the fun of gardening indoors. All you need is a little space, a few supplies and of course seeds to get started. Check the back of your seed packets for planting directions. Most recommend when and how to start seeds indoors as well as any other special care the seedlings will need. Purchase, recycle or make your own containers from newspaper. Sanitize used pots by dipping them in a one part bleach and nine parts water solution and then rinsing them with clean water. Fill the containers with a sterile well-drained potting mix or seed starting mix. Once the containers are filled, For most seeds, plant them twice their diameter deep and gently water. Continue to water often enough to keep the soil slightly moist. Extend the time between watering and increase your seed starting success by covering the container with plastic. Or purchase a seed starting kit, like the self-watering Growease seed starter kits. Move your containers to a sunny window as soon as the seedlings emerge from the soil. Turn plants often to encourage even growth. Or increase your success by growing seedlings under artificial lights. You can make your own light system or purchase tabletop, shelf units or easy to assemble light systems, like Stack-N-Grow (gardeners.com). Keep the lights four to six inches above the top of the seedlings for best results. As the seedlings grow, be sure to maintain this distance by simply raising the lights or lowering the containers. Move overcrowded seedlings to larger containers once they have two sets of true leaves. The first leaves that appear are rather indistinct and are called seed leaves. The next set of leaves look more like the mature plant’s leaves and are called true leaves. Once the next set of true leaves forms, it is time to transplant overcrowded seedlings. Use a fork or spoon to carefully lift out the seedling. Clusters of seedlings can be dug and carefully teased apart before planting in individual pots. Be careful not to pinch and damage the young tender stems. Place seedlings in their own clean container filled with moist sterile potting mix. Plant the young plants at the same depth they were growing in the original container. Thin seedlings started in individual containers as needed. If you planted several seeds in each small container remove all but the healthiest one. Prune the weaker seedlings to ground level, so the remaining seedling can develop into a strong transplant for the garden. Continue to grow your plants in a sunny window or under artificial lights and water thoroughly and often enough to keep the soil slightly moist. Soon it will be time to move your homegrown transplants into the garden.
