Volume 20 Issue
At the the turn of the 20th century (the year 1900) there were 10 Cotton Mills running on the Deep river in Randolph County, North Carolina. They were all built on the banks of the Deep river with 2 mills in Randleman, 1 at Worthville , 1 at Central Falls, 2 mills at Cedar Falls, 2 at Franklinville, 1 at Ramseur and 1 mill at Coleridge . The rst one built was Cedar Falls in 1836. Sapona was built in 1895. Then 2 mills in Franklinville in 1840 and 1846. Randleman was next with 2 mills in 1848 and 1878. Ramseur in 1850 . After the War between the States there was Worthville in 1880. Central Falls 1881 and Coleridge in 1882. The water from the river turned a water wheel and that wheel powered the mechanical gears and shafts which powered the machines that turned raw cotton into cloth or yarn. It was a hot , dusty and dangerous job working in a cotton mill. Working around spinning machines and looms. The mill had to have xers to keep the weaving and spinning machines running smoothly and ef ciently. For the mill to manufacture cloth or yarn and turn a pro t. The only mills running today on the Deep river in Randolph County are the ones at Central Falls, Prestige Fabricators and Sapona Manufacturing at Cedar Falls. All the others have closed down , are falling down or have been torn down. At one time the state of North Carolina was the textile leader in the world. Along with furniture and tobacco. North Carolina is no longer the leader in textiles . Gone are the textile jobs and the cotton mills that once lined the Deep River in Randolph County and were a booming industry to our county and state.

The rst cotton mill in Randolph County, was built on the banks of the Deep river at Cedar
Volume 20 Issue
Liberty Event Center 123 S. Greensboro St. Liberty NC 27298
Falls, North Carolina. Chartered in 1828 and opened in 1836. It was built like so many other cotton mills across the South, near a river. For water power to run the mills machinery. The Cedar Falls cotton mill produced more cotton cloth for the Confederacy than any other cotton mill in North Carolina during the War between the States. It also supplied the soldiers from North Carolina and the Confederate army with clothing and supplies during the war. After the war it was expanded and provided jobs for the citizens of Cedar Falls and surrounding communities. The railroad line that came from the mill . Went to Climax and Pleasant Garden and from there it tied into the main line at Greensboro, North Carolina. The railroad crossed Old Liberty Road near Wicker- Lovell road coming from the mill at Cedar Falls then turned northeast to Millboro, following Mack Lineberry road and then followed N.C. Highway 22 to Climax and from there on to Greensboro. The railroad was taken up in the late 1980s from Climax to Cedar Falls. The old mill was closed down due to foreign competition, cheap labor and imports, like so many other cotton mills across the Southern states. It has withstood re and ood in its 190 year history. But the old mill still stands, still standing from a by gone era and a reminder of the past.
