Brilliant Ways to Fight Allergens This Season

(StatePoint) During allergy season, having a safe haven from the triggers that make you sneeze and wheeze is essential. While you can’t completely control your surroundings in the great outdoors, you can take steps at home to reduce allergens and feel your best.

• Fresh, cool air: The right air conditioning unit can help you breathe better indoors. For example, the Midea U delivers a cold airflow that can be felt up to 20 feet away and features full DC inverter technology to rapidly cool a room. Its removable and washable air filter is easily cleaned to help reduce dust and pet allergens in the air. And thanks to its U-shaped design, you can easily open and close your windows even when the unit is installed, giving you more control of your indoor air quality and environment. Bonus -- it’s compatible with Alexa and Google Assistant and is Energy Star-certified and ultra-quiet.

• Smart steps: When you get home from spending time outdoors, take off outer layers that have made contact with pollen, such as jackets and shoes. Having a mud room or other area to remove and store these items, preferably attached to or close to your laundry room, will help you avoid tracking and spreading allergens throughout your home.

• Screened doors and windows: Even if you suffer from allergies, you may enjoy throwing open your windows on a nice day for a cross breeze. Just be sure all the screens on your windows and doors are in good condition and free of tears and holes. Special pollen-blocking screens are easy to install and go a step further than standard insect screens to keep out smaller, particulate matter, including pollen, dust and other small irritants and allergens.

• Whole-home cleaning: Regular vacuuming will make a world of difference in the way you feel. For maximum relief, use a vacuum with complete seal HEPA filtration. This means it’s EPA-certified to do the job, based on the standard test method, which indicates it can trap 99.9% of dust, dander and allergen particles 0.3 microns and larger. The Innova Upright Vacuum, for example, targets these particles and facilitates whole-home cleaning. Thanks to its detachable accessories and components, and LED user interface, you can optimize your cleaning for every surface, including hard floor, carpet and upholstery, curtains, the space under furniture and stairs. And if you’re a pet parent, you can expect a deeper, more efficient clean and longer operation due to its dual-action brush roll that actively prevents pet hair tangles and clogs from forming while concentrating air flow. It also has a motorized anti-tangle pet tool that effectively removes hair and debris from stairs and upholstery.

There is no need to suffer in your own home this season. With some smart strategies and the right tools, you can keep allergens at bay indoors.

Tips for Avoiding Bug Bites This Summer

(StatePoint) Bug bites are not just a nuisance, they can cause discomfort and even pose health risks for some.

“Mosquitoes that may carry Zika, Chikungunya, Dengue fever and West Nile virus are always out in full force during the summer months and new evidence suggests that tick populations are growing, expanding their geographic ranges and carrying additional pathogens,” says Daniel Perry, entomologist at Zevo, a maker of pest control products that are made to bother bugs, not people.

From beach barbecues to walks in the woods, here’s how to safeguard yourself against ticks and mosquitoes, so you can stay bug-free this summer for whatever takes you outside.

• Beat backyard bugs: Eliminate standing water to prevent mosquitoes from using your backyard as a breeding ground in areas where you entertain and dine. Keeping your lawn and weeds in check is a useful step for managing ticks.

• Take safer walks: Whether you’re picnicking in the park, walking the dog, working in the garden or hiking in the woods, it’s important to be mindful of ticks, which can transmit Lyme and other diseases. When possible, avoid contact with tall grass and brush, which is where ticks reside. Always be sure to launder your outdoor gear shortly after use. Take a shower soon after getting home, being sure to inspect your body (and your dog’s!) for ticks. If you do spot a tick, follow proper protocol for removal, using clean tweezers and removing fully, without squeezing or twisting the tick.

• Protect your skin: “No matter what your outdoor plans entail, bug spray products applied beforehand are your best bet for complete protection against mosquitoes and ticks, and of course, the diseases they harbor and transmit,” says Perry.

The new line-up of Zevo On-Body Mosquito + Tick Repellents are odorless and non-greasy, unlike traditional insect repellents, and provide complete, feel-good protection for the entire family for up to 8 hours. Whether you’re at a garden-style wedding or hiking a mountain trail, you can be comfortable and protected from bugs with this innovative formula. The active ingredient in these products is inspired from a naturally-occurring amino acid and doesn’t leave your skin feeling sticky, which is a big bonus when you’re spending all day outside or even just 30 minutes! It’s available as an aerosol spray, a pump spray, and a lotion, which allows for easy, mess-free application before you go outside.

• Camp smart: Before departing for a camping trip, check your tent for small holes and repair or replace as needed. Select a campsite away from standing water, and zip up your tent whenever you’re not actively entering or exiting it. These measures will help you feel comfortable and protected from bugs on your next trip.

Don’t let the bugs bug you this summer. From sporting events to evenings on the patio, a few precautions can help ensure your comfort and protection from those pesky pests.

HELPING CHILDREN LEARN THE ABCS WITH CATCHY SONGS AND POETRY ABOUT ANIMALS

National (April 25, 2023)—Debut author Alissa Bernholc has penned a creative children’s book, Alphabet ZooP: Zoological Poetry From A to Z, with a companion coloring book, each published by Warren Publishing. There is also an associated website, alphabetzoop.com. The book is a collection of poems and illustrations, featuring animals, not always ones you might expect, representing every letter of the alphabet. And the final poem in the book is a message to readers to find and follow their passions. The fun facts and pithy poems in Alphabet ZooP are a uniquely captivating educational tool.

The concept of Alphabet ZooP was sparked by a trip to the zoo with her kids. While Bernholc was at home doing chores, she kept her mind engaged by creating a poem about an animal for each letter of the alphabet and then got to work on the art. “I painted twenty-six pictures. But then I misplaced them all,” says Bernholc. However, this turned into a blessing because she found illustrator Judy Siler Boyette.

Ultimately, the collection of poems morphed into a grand project comprising a website with the poetry performed by song and readings, sound effects, artwork for the book, the original artwork (which Bernholc later found) and now a book and coloring book. Recognizing that children learn best through many mediums, Alphabet Zoop, teaches through songs, poems, letter association, and colorful illustrations. It took a team of talented artists to bring the project to life. “It was not too difficult once the right team [was] found,” says Bernholc. “Finding that team took time, but each person was dedicated. It took a lot of effort and turned out great in the end.”

Through Alphabet ZooP, Bernholc shares her worldview, “To me, this is just sharing the curiosity and love of learning about the world around us.” With such a creative and collaborative project, the sky’s the limit. Bernholc shares her vision to apply these mediums to any topic imaginable: “I have written poems about the solar system, and I’ve written poems about other kingdoms containing creatures who are neither plants nor animals. I hope to write poems about the oceans, plants, and perhaps the different national parks. The world is just full of beauty and wonder, and I hope to share this awe with future generations.”

Alphabet ZooP: Zoological Poetry from A to Z, and its companion coloring book, can be ordered on Amazon.com, BarnesandNoble.com, warrenpublishing.net, and asked for wherever books are sold. For media interviews and author appearances, contact Mindy Kuhn at (704) 900-0236, warrenpublish@gmail.com, or visit www.warrenpublishing.net.

Kellin Foundation is pleased to offer TEENS GOTTA TALK for FREE this summer! Teens today face more and different stressors than previous generations of Americans and the 57% increase in suicides in the 10-24 age group between 2007 and 2018 (according to CDC) is a serious cause for alarm.

Teens need an outlet to talk about and the issues effecting them. They need support and guidance on navigating the range of emotions that teenagers inevitably experience.
