Nationwide Insurance, Proudly serving the Liberty Community for 60 years and counting
For those unable to remember 1953, it was the first year that the Chevrolet Corvette was produced. In the world of Hollywood, Marilyn Monroe and Rita Hayworth provided the heat and Frank Sinatra provided the cool. In sports, the Dodgers and Lakers were gunning for world championships in baseball and basketball. In 1953, those teams were located in Brooklyn and Minneapolis in 1953, by the way. Also In 1953, Monk Cummings was right in the middle of his career as a dairy farmer. Monk was having difficulty making connections with an insurance agent that could be flexible enough to meet with him between chores on the farm. Upon seeing that he and his fellow local farmers shared the need for a locally based insurance agency, Monk launched his Liberty, North Carolina based Nationwide Insurance agency. Albert Einstein often commented that work should be done “as simply as possible, but no simpler”. In other words, do things the right way, but don’t cut any corners. Perhaps Monk had a little Einstein in him, for as the agency took flight; Monk adopted his own simple mantra; “Be available and be friendly”. Those two simple concepts; be available and be friendly, along with being the best agent that he could be, were tenets that Cummings adopted when he opened his Insurance agency. In the later stages of his career, Cummings joined forces with his son in law, Scott Shattuck, and by working together, Monk’s knowledge and principles seamlessly flowed to Scott. A generation later, Shattuck successfully repeated the transition to his current business partner in the agency, Jeff Lawver. Through the years, Monk, Scott and Jeff provided quality service to the Liberty area and their agency flourished because of it. Their portfolio of business, filled with both commercial accounts, including many local farmers and residential accounts from many more local home owners. Each account reflected their continued ability to relate to the small town business person and their neighbors, as well. If you’re going to do business with somebody, especially somebody that is going to be insuring your most valuable assets, you’d like them to be able to do a number of things. Knowing the nuts and bolts of the insurance business is something that you assume that your agent possesses. Taking that relationship to the next level by always being available and always being friendly, doing business with them becomes a pleasure. A quality agent would be nowhere without a quality clientele and your local Nationwide agent has exactly that. Thanks to their hard work over the years, the greater Liberty area has benefited from local service and knowledge. Likewise, Monk, Scott and most recently Jeff have reaped some pretty impressive awards. President’s Conference Awards (top 2% of Nationwide Agents, nationwide), On Your Side Certification (awarded for excellence in Customer Service) and On Your Side Farm Certification (Preferred Agribusiness agent) are three such awards. In addition, the agency has a full time financial producer to assist with financial needs and three Customer Service Representatives that have nearly 60 years of combined service to the town of Liberty. Yes, much has changed in the six decades since it began, but the simple and solid principles of being available and being friendly have not. It certainly has worked well for those who have known Monk Cummings, Scott Shattuck and Jeff Lawver and have been insured by their agency over the last 60 years.

Making An Impact In Randolph County
RAMSEUR - During the Ramseur Area Civitan Club meeting on October 1, 2013, the
guest speaker was Amanda Ratliff. Ratliff spoke to the group about the Parents as Teachers and Smart Start programs sponsored by the Randolph County Partnership for Children and United Way. She works in the Franklinville and Ramseur Elementary schools area with focus on kids from 0-5 years of age. She has worked in this position for 11 years and her expertise is in Family Literacy. Ratliff passed out literature on both of these programs and also brought with her a mother and her preschool age son (who has Downs Syndrome) to speak with and to explain how the program has helped her family. During Ratcliff’s very informative talk, she also noted that they collect children’s books to give out to children at Christmas parades in Asheboro, Randleman, Ramseur, Franklinville and Liberty. Through to the generosity of a local business, the Ramseur Area Civitan Club was fortunate enough to donate 160 Winnie the Pooh recordable books to the Randolph County Partnership For Children for this project. The retail value of the donation was $4,800. “Thank you! We can always use books and will gladly distribute them at the parades,” Ratliff said. “Books are ALWAYS a good thing! Thank you for thinking of this program! – Amanda, Franklinville-Ramseur Parents as Teachers

November RCC Small Business Center Seminars Include Classes in Seagrove and Ramseur! Randolph Community College’s Small Business Center continues its series of free informational seminars in November for owners of small businesses or those considering opening their own businesses. The month’s offerings include classes in Seagrove and Ramseur. The first seminar in November will provide a thorough overview of fundraising. “Nonprofit Fundraising,” scheduled for 6-9 p.m., Monday, Nov. 4, will cover all aspects of fundraising, including corporate giving, special events, individual giving, grant writing, and details such as recordkeeping and donor recognition. The seminar, which will be held in the Continuing Education and Industrial Center on the Asheboro Campus, will be taught by Greta Lint. Get the basics in “10 Steps to Starting a Small Business,” with instructor Jim Myers, which covers the steps you need to take to make your dream become a reality and what you must know before you commit yourself and your money. The seminar will be held from 6-9 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 6, at the Seagrove Public Library. Business depends on getting the right information or product to the right people at the right time. On Tuesday, Nov. 12, from 6-9 p.m., at the CEIC in Asheboro, instructor Greta Lint will present “Writing a Marketing Plan.” Participants will learn that developing even the most basic of marketing plans can keep their businesses focused when priorities shift. “Legal Considerations for Starting Your Small Business” will cover topics such as comparing tax and nontax aspects of different entity choices (sole proprietorships, partnerships, corporations, limited liability companies), permits and licenses, zoning laws, providing a safe workplace for employees, contracts, professional advisors, and record keeping. This free seminar will be held from 6-9 p.m., Monday, Nov. 18, at the CEIC with presenter Lora Howard. “Basic Business Planning,” which is scheduled for 69 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 20, at the Ramseur Town Hall, will give you information on where to start, what to include, what to avoid, what it will cost, where to go for help, and how to assess your chances of success. Jim Myers is the presenter. “Build Your Business with Social Networking (Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn),” taught by Greta Lint, will be offered from 6-9 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 21, at the CEIC on the Asheboro Campus. This free course is ideal for someone who wants to learn how to advance a business with social media. Students will be taught how to set up an account, post messages, find people, and promote safely through these media. This seminar is being cosponsored by the Asheboro/Randolph Chamber of Commerce. “How to Increase Your Credit Score to Over 740 Points; Preparing for a Bank Loan” is scheduled for 6-9 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 26, also in the CEIC. In this three-hour seminar, instructor Bob Moore will discuss the history of credit scoring, how to read a credit report and what factors are used to raise your score simply by the way you use your cards, treat inquiries, make your payments and carry balances. To register for RCC’s Small Business Center seminars, call RCC at 336-633-0268 in Asheboro or 336-862-7980 in Archdale. Randolph Community College’s Small Business Center supports the development of new business and the growth of existing businesses by being a communitybased provider of education and training, counseling, and resource information and referrals. It is located at 413 Industrial Park Avenue in the RCC Continuing Education and Industrial Center.

Did You See Zombies On Sun Nov 3?
What seemed like a routine tour at "Apollo Medical" facilities turned into a fight to survive the zombie outbreak! That was the premise of the November 3rd's Zombie Apocalypse at Millstone Creek Orchard in Ramseur. Over 125 participated as zombies, survivor teams, and mission leaders. Middle and high schoolers roamed the hillside armed with Nerf guns and flag belts trying to score points, complete missions, and piece together the cure for the "x-47" virus. The game was followed up by s'mores and hotdogs at the fire pits as the winning team claimed their cash prize!
"
The teen ministries from Freedom Family Church of Liberty and First Christian Church of Ramseur collaborated on the event involving a host of other youth groups and other interested students from the community. "This was a new type of event for us..." one of the organizers said. "There was a lot of experimenting and even more praying! As always, God's plans are better than our own." They ended the night by sharing the main reason for the event, to celebrate the fact that each of them (and each of us, too) begin as zombies, walking dead in our sins and mistakes. It's only through the salvation and love of Jesus that the "cure" can be found! God's presence was felt, even in the midst of zombies, reminding everyone that only One has the power over death...and He's available to you each day.

Historic Downtown Walking Tour
L
Just a few comments about the Historic Downtown Walking Tour given by the Patterson Cottage Museum committee: A thoroughly fascinating, informative and enlightening look into Liberty. A big thank you to all the Patterson Cottage Museum committee members for their hard work in compiling the photographs, pulling the information together and giving the tours. While it is said, one shouldn't live in the past, I found myself wishing today's Liberty was the vibrant thriving town it has been historically; our town's roots if you will. I highly encourage any and everyone who is involved in the STEP program, Small Town Mainstreet, merchants, Chamber of Commerce members, elected officials (or those hoping to become one) to avail themselves of the opportunity the next time a Walking Tour is offered. Learning our roots and nurturing them to take growth again, in my humble opinion, is a step towards bringing Liberty back to all the things that are discussed time and time again. One sage comment I also took away from the tour was this: Before we start marketing Liberty outwards, it would be prudent to market Liberty inward and enlighten those already here about the many treasures we have. The Historic Downtown Walking Tour was/is just one example.
The Liberty Christmas Parade and Tree Lighting Festival will be held on Saturday December 7, 2013. The Street Festival will start at 10 am on Swannannoa Ave. This will include music, crafts, and vendors. The Parade will start at 2:30 pm on Greensboro St. and will end at Liberty School. The Tree Lighting Festival will take place on Depot St. from 4pm-6pm. This is an opportunity for churches, businesses, civic groups, or individuals in the “spirit of Christmas” to freely give back to our community. The festivities will conclude with the lighting of the Liberty Christmas Tree. The Liberty Chamber of Commerce would like to request the sponsorship of your business in supporting Liberty's Annual Holiday Tradition. It takes loyal, businesses, strong civic organizations, committed churches, and charitable citizens to make this event successful. For those who are willing to give back to their community, we wish many blessings upon you and your business this Christmas Season and throughout the New Year. Without your generous donations, events such as this would not be possible. As we celebrate this Christmas Season let's open our hearts to Liberty. Sponsorship is needed in the following areas: (approximate estimates) Stage / Sound System $200, Local Bands $200, School Marching Bands $375 Pictures with Santa $400, Candy for Santa to distribute $300, Signs & Advertising Banners $ 200, Replacement Lights for the Tree $325 If you are willing to make a donation in any amount, it would be greatly appreciated.Pleas make checks payable to: The Liberty Chamber of Commerce marked: Christmas Parade / Festival P.O. Staying fit is a great way to feel good and look good on a daily basis! 4-H has a curriculum on “Keeping Fit”! You can obtain a copy of this workbook by contacting us at Cooperative Extension. Health experts say that there are lots of reasons why people choose to stay fit including: healthier heart, stronger muscles, bones and joints, increased energy, burning calories, sharper thinking, and disease prevention. Keeping fit includes hydrating your body, or drinking enough water to keep you healthy and strong. Many people forget to get fully hydrated while exercising. Since your body is two-thirds water, it is as important as food when it comes to your power and performance. To find out how much water you need, divide your body weight in half. This is the number of ounces of water you should drink every day. 4-H suggests that a person track their water intake every day for a week. Carbonated beverages, juices and sports drinks don’t count. Did you know that you need 6 – 8 cups of water per day? When you sweat during exercise it is easy to become overheated and not perform to your potential. If you do not drink enough water, dehydration can set in quickly. Dehydration makes you feel dizzy and lightheaded. The best way to stay hydrated is to drink before, during and after exercise, you should drink water whether you feel thirsty or not! Another aspect of keeping fit is eating a balanced diet. There are fifty different nutrients you body needs. Examples of nutrient-rich foods are colorful fruits (strawberries, kiwi, mango grapes etc.) and vegetables (broccoli, asparagus, squash, carrots, peas, etc.), whole grain products such as brown rice and oatmeal, lean meats, eggs, nuts and beans as proteins. Calcium products such as milk and cheese are needed to maintain a healthy body too. Always remember to choose a naturally nutrient-rich food first to satisfy your appetite and give your body the nutrients it must have to function at top performance. You can include other fun foods, like desserts and sweetened beverages, as your calories allow once you’ve met your nutrient needs from each food group. Did you know that the energy your body needs for physical activity comes from carbohydrates, fats and proteins. The nutrient rich foods will provide the vitamins and minerals your body uses to get the energy from the carbohydrates, fats and proteins. Without the sufficient vitamins and minerals you may not have the energy to perform your best. For more information on maintaining a healthy fit lifestyle, check out our healthy lifestyles 4-H curriculum books. If you would like more information about joining 4-H contact us at: Liberty 218-4000; Archdale / Trinity, 819-3000, and Asheboro, 318-6000. 4H is open to girls and boys ages 519 without regard to race, color, religion, sex, national origin or disability. 4-H is a United Way Agency.

Ramseur approves community garden, streetscaping! RAMSEUR — Revitalization is in the air in Ramseur.! A new proposal for a community garden and new streetscape enhancements for the downtown area were both approved at the Ramseur Board of Commissioners meeting Monday. Linda Allred and Becky Frazier informed the board that a grant for $3,000 has been awarded to the N.C. STEP (Small Towns Economic Prosperity program) Agribusiness committee to develop a new community garden in Ramseur. The grant came from the Nourishing N.C. and Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina (BCBSNC), who have joined forces to establish a community garden in all 100 counties by the end of 2013. “It had to be done on public land so we asked if we could revive the town’s community garden,” Allred said. “We are also working with the Randolph County Partnership for Children to recruit up to 50 families with special needs children in the Ramseur area. We want them to have access to fresh fruits and vegetables to supplement their diets.” The funding for the community garden, which is located at the end of Roundleaf Road, will be used to purchase supplies, materials, plants, planting material, fencing and small kiddie pools to be used as an exaggerated type of container gardening. Participants will be asked to donate 10 percent of the produce grown to the Ramseur Food Pantry and Faith Rock Ministries. “Our long-range goal is to continue the garden with community support — to help keep it going,” Allred added. Frazier agreed. “We also wanted to introduce this to the community in a small way and not overwhelm them,” she said. The planning for the garden will begin in January and the first planting day is scheduled for May 10, 2014. More good news for the downtown area is the next phase of the N.C. STEP team’s master plan for downtown revitalization. Jeff Loflin with the N.C. Department of Transportation (NCDOT) told the board about funding to enhance pedestrian safety in the downtown area. Approximately $20,000 of N.C. STEP funding has been allocated for this project and Loflin said that the NCDOT was willing to fund $20,000 on a shared basis at 80 percent match. The town’s share will be $4,000. Improvements will include curb extensions with greenery as well as changing the downtown parking to more angled spaces and less parallel parking. Parallel parking will be maintained from Jordan Memorial United Methodist Church on Main Street to U.S. 22 South (Coleridge Road) for a combined total of 79 parking spaces. The project is projected to be completed on or before Dec. 18. “I think this is a win-win situation,” said board member Morris Rudick. “Maybe these improvements will help get more businesses into the buildings downtown.” The board also revisited a possible resolution to mandate fire hydrant usage (for water sales) in wake of a loss of 300,000 gallons of water after a hydrant was left open during June. The town lost $1,800 in revenue because of the open hydrant, a loss that was greater than the $1,603 income from water sales in 2012-2013. Odell Routh purchases water from the town on a regular basis asked the town to reconsider its action and how it would affect his business. “I have been in the water business since 1985 and never had any trouble in any town,” he said. “We have always paid our bill and never had any problems. I understand you are exploring options and a solution, but I consider this a short-sighted solution — to protect your water because of one instance of vandalism.” After further discussion, the board voted to give Routh and one other water customer a key to a locked hydrant on Crestwick Road. Keys to the hydrant will also be given to the fire department and the town hall. In other reports, the board approved: * A Girl Scout project for Hannah Harris to raise funding for a defibrillator and to hold classes on CPR in the town hall. * Purchasing a new computer for the town hall at a cost of $1,400. * Fire department expenses of $780. Mayor Danny Shaw also reminded the audience of upcoming events: * N.C. STEP meeting on Tuesday, Oct. 22, from 6-8 p.m., at the Ramseur Town Hall. * Ramseur Main Street Cruise In on Saturday, Oct. 12, 4 p.m. until dark in downtown Ramseur. * Halloween Downtown on Thursday, Oct. 31, from 6-8 p.m. * Ramseur Lake will be closing for the season on Oct. 31.

Tuesday Night Service on Oct 29 at Freedom Family Church was topic Spiritual Warfare. At the end we learned about this war cry.! I want us all to learn the war cry and put the dark voices on notice. To claim Liberty back and to be the strong men and women of God that God designed us to be. I hope you enjoy the rest of this story and the meaning behind the war cry as much as I do. It has chanced my entire walk with GOD. The two-part call and response in Hebrew is: “Rak Chazak!” “Chazak Amats” This Battle Cry came from a video piece that serves to inspire many to lay hold of our destiny together as Kingdom Men. The video is called Ancient War Cry By Eric Ludy and can be seen on YouTube. “Rak” The rock-like ‘oomph’ of the spiritually zealous heart…Proverbs 23:17! “Chazak” is possessing a resolute and growling resolve for the glory of God…” 2 Corinthians 4:6 Simply Put – “Rak Chazak” means “All Strength and Courage for the Glory of Our God” “Amats”: It’s rushing headlong into the most hazardous and! impossible battles without pausing to consider the impossibilities.” 1 Samuel 17:4551 “Chazak Amats” means “All Strength for Him in the Face of Sure Death”! “RAK CHAZAK Men of God Almighty. All the powers of earth and hell that come against your soul, and all the powers of earth and hell that are puppeteering the lost masses, filled with the Holy Spirit - you hit them square in the teeth.” Ephesians! 6:10-20 “Be strong and of good courage , for to this people you shall divide as an inheritance the land which I swore to their fathers to give them. Only be strong and very courageous , that you may observe to do according to all the law which Moses My servant commanded you; do not turn from it to the right hand or to the left, that you may prosper wherever you go. This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success. Have I not commanded you? Be strong and of good courage; do not be afraid, nor be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.” ~ Joshua 1:6-9 This is our calling. This is our purpose. This is our desire. “Rak Chazak!” “Chazak Amats” All Strength and Courage for the Glory of Our God! All Strength for HIM in the Face of Sure Death! Some central quotes with scripture from the video. “A tensing of all a soldier’s muscles.” 2 Timothy 2:4! “We are in a position to see souls set free!” Romans 6:22 “Your knuckles, spiritually, should turn white and you should find yourself gritting your spiritual teeth with a belligerence against the enemy…” Revelation 19:11-21 “HE GOES DOWN!” Revelation 20:10 “It’s a confidence in victory even before the field is taken.” Judges 15:1416 “It’s lambs moving with liquid ferocity straight into the lion’s lair.” Joshua 6:1-5, 20-21 “Swift-footed, All-believing, Super-conquering, Prevailing faith in the Lord of battles.” 2 Thessalonians 1:3-11 “Be strong and of good courage!” Deuteronomy 31:6-8 “Even if we die, we win.” Matthew 19:29

Kwik Stop #3 - More than A Gas Station!
HAVE YOU ACCEPTED HIS INVITATION
Sometimes we get so busy we miss the simple treasures right under our nose. I had the pleasure of meeting all the great folks at the Kwik Stop #3 ( formerly known as Handi Mart). The staff is always full of smiles and laughter. But little do many know the great new features you can get at this location. They have some of the best fried chicken in the area. You can get numerous other items cooked to order. Lets not forget the many years we all have picked up hotdogs here. They all your beverages chilled and ready to go. Got a sweet tooth to a chip craving, you name it they got it. The staff states they have the cheapest cigarettes in town. Monday thru Saturday you can pick up breakfast and then 7 days a week lunch to dinner.

I think we found where the cuts should be made! If you agree pass it on, I just did. Warren Buffet, in a recent interview with CNBC, offers one of the best quotes about the debt ceiling: "I could end the deficit in 5 minutes," he told CNBC. "You just pass a law that says that anytime there is a deficit of more than 3% of GDP, all sitting members of Congress are ineligible for reelection. The 26th amendment (granting the right to vote for 18 year-olds) took only 3 months & 8 days to be ratified! Why? Simple! The people demanded it. That was in 1971 - before computers, e-mail, cell phones, etc. Of the 27 amendments to the Constitution, seven (7) took one (1) year or less to become the law of the land - all because of public pressure. Warren Buffet is asking each addressee to forward this email to a minimum of twenty people on their address list; in turn ask each of those to do likewise. In three days, most people in The United States of America will have the message. This is one idea that really should be passed around. Congressional Reform Act of 2013 1. No Tenure / No Pension. A Congressman/woman collects a salary while in office and receives no pay when they're out of office. 2. Congress (past, present & future) participates in Social Security. All funds in the Congressional retirement fund move to the Social Security system immediately. All future funds flow into the Social Security system, and Congress participates with the American people. It may not be used for any other purpose. 3. Congress can purchase their own retirement plan, just as all Americans do. 4. Congress will no longer vote themselves a pay raise. Congressional pay will rise by the lower of CPI or 3%. 5. Congress loses their current health care system and participates in the same health care system as the American people. 6. Congress must equally abide by all laws they impose on the American people. 7. All contracts with past and present Congressmen/women are void effective 12/1/13. The American people did not make this contract with Congressmen/women.Congress made all these contracts for themselves. Serving in Congress is an honor, not a career. The Founding Fathers envisioned citizen legislators, so ours should serve their term(s), then go home and back to work. If each person contacts a minimum of twenty people then it will only take three days for most people (in the U.S.) to receive the message. Don't you think it's time? THIS IS HOW YOU FIX CONGRESS!

So Who Is The Inspiring Face Behind The Hay Bale Art?!
All New Store - All New Look -All New Products! Gas- Convince Store-FishingHardware-Food-and More!
Well if you travel between Liberty and Ramseur on Hwy 49, you have defiantly noticed the art work each month that transforms with a unique eye appeal for the holiday or event for that time of the year. If you have not, you need to make a point to drive and check it out. Actually during conversations with several (myself included) I make a point each month to travel just to see what new idea this young lady has came up with. As you can see from the picture below her Halloween scene was awesome. Well the inspiring artist behind this artwork is none other than Lucy Williams from Staley. She is the daughter of Ronald and Rhonda Williams. Lucy is a college freshman and as noted on Facebook, still loves to trick or treat. However, if you have had the pleasure to get to know Lucy as I have over the past few years, spreading smiles and laughter is one of her gifts. I can not ever think of a time when I left from her presence that I did not feel better than when I arrived. Lucy I want to thank you for putting smiles on the faces of locals and travelers through our area. We need more positive and encouraging people in our lives. So why not smile at some one today, it may be contagious. So make sure to keep your eyes open on 49 for the latest hay bale creation. You never know it may one day have an old El Camino in it. ! 22

The annual Fall Business Expo & Luncheon! The annual Fall Business Expo & Luncheon was enthusiastically attended by local business owners of Liberty on September 18, 2013. Organized by The Chamber of Commerce and held at the American Legion Post, the luncheon was met with a great turnout. Thanks to the generous contributions of Capri's Pizza, China House, Hurricane Jane’s, Maria's Pizza, Miracle Valley, Off the Vine, Steak-N-Pizza, Y'all Come Back Cafe, and Dash-N-Donuts, an array of delicious food was provided. Ron Johnson, the current chamber president, gave a brief update of chamber events, and specifically mentioned the upcoming Christmas Parade. He encouraged all business to help support this annual Liberty tradition. Carol Wall of Awesome Finds, discussed the Liberty Caboose Renovations that have taken place earlier this year. Don Herndon of Cross Roads Vending, elaborated on his decision to join the chamber years ago and how it had positively affected his business. Gwen Daye of the Church of God of Prophesy spoke about the advantage a business, church or organization has by becoming a member of the chamber of commerce. Stephanie Gee of Randolph Telephone, conducted a fun drawing for door prizes that were kindly donated by local businesses including BB&T, Carolina Farm Credit, Dollar General, Euliss Propane, Freeman Ford, Food Lion, Liberty Artisan & Craft Gallery, Liberty Chiropractic Center, Liberty Farm & Garden, Liberty Hardware, Liberty Oil, Quality Mart, Randolph Telephone, and Walmart Express.
