New Stores Opening Liberty Welcomes In Downtown Liberty" New Fire Chief" Do not know if you have noticed the hustle and bustle on main street in downtown Liberty. The sad part is we lost two business, and avon/ gift shop and also an antique store. Both left for reasons that drew them out of town. The good part is two new business has jumped on the building locations. The first is going to be “Something Old Something New Something For You”. Here men can enjoy the hunting and fishing section while the ladies can shop for jewelry, clothes, handbags and more! They hope to be open in a few weeks. The other is “A Piece Of Cake Bakery” which is heavily remodeling the old Brewer Building on the corner. They are installing in the rear of the building a full bakery and in the front they will be serving great dessert to beverages. Plus they will be great areas to lounge in while taking a break or catching up with old friends. This is what I am excited about our small towns from Liberty to Ramseur, old business being reborn with new lively blood. From Sportsmans Supply reopening better than ever to Tropica Tanning being reopened even better than ever. Now community it is our part to help support these new business plus the existing. Shop there, visit there, just a few dollars a month can make a difference to them. See you at the stores.

The (Pre-Literacy) Carnival! is coming to the Liberty Public Library!! On Tuesday September 9th at 11:00 am! Things to read! Things to do! Stories! Games! Let’s make some noise! Lots of things of interest and fun for girls and boys! ! This is the Every Child Ready to Read Event for children ages 0-5 who are not yet reading, and their families. We will read stories, play carnival games, and enjoy some snacks. Join us as we explore the many ways that getting ready to read can be easy and a lot of fun!! Every child Ready to Read is a parent education initiative that provides strategies that parent’s and caregivers can use to help children from birth to age 5 develop necessary early literacy skills and get ready to read. Researchers have identified five practices that can easily be integrated into everyday activities to help children learn early literacy skills:! 1) Talking: Talking with children helps them learn oral language, which is one of the most important early literacy skills.! 2) Singing: Singing and rhyming increase children’s awareness of the sounds in words.! 3) Reading: Reading to and with children is the single most effective way to help children become successful readers.! 4) Writing: Writing helps children learn that letters and words stand for sounds and ideas.! 5) Playing: Play is one of the primary ways that children learn about the world around them. General knowledge is important to help children understand what they are reading.!

FUSION.. What is it?!

We now carry a wide selection of miniature gardening supplies. Stop in today and browse our growing selection of containers, accessories, moss, miniature foliage plants, ferns, conifers, and much more... it's a fun hobby that is quickly gaining popularity. Inexpensive to start and easy to maintain, you can let your imagination run wild.

Classes coming soon! !

As you may have noticed, a movement has been building in Liberty to unite churches around the cause of Christ and sharing The Gospel. And starting September 7th, the "one church" mentality will take a leap forward with the youth ministries as well: and it's called FUSION. Every 6 weeks, many of the local youth groups will be gathering for an exciting night of worship, fellowship, games, and biblical teaching. "The more we began doing events together, the more we realized we were stronger and better as one", said one of the Fusion leaders. "We think uniting our visions, goals, and prayers will allow us to be more effective for God. And the beauty is, we get to enjoy the excitement and unity of a big group while still having the variety and closeness of our individual youth groups." !

A HIGH-ENERGY GATHERING OF MIDDLE & HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS

Fs FUSION

SUNDAY NIGHT SEPT 7 / OCT 19 / DEC 7

!

One of the goals of Fusion is to feed the local churches by encouraging middle and high school students to get involved with a youth group on a weekly basis. Ideally, Fusion will be the "foot in the door" for a teenager, then hopefully getting grafted into a community of Christians is next so that they can grow. So far, there are Fusions planned well into 2015 and we will be bringing you updates as this movement progresses!

Our new agriculture teacher, Jessica Gordon, is eager to get the greenhouse complete for student use prior to school opening and could use some extra able hands to get the job done. She has had several adults volunteer and welcomes additional help on Saturday, August 9th at 8 a.m. As a thank you! Ms. Gordon plans to serve hot dogs for lunch. Several came out and meet Ms. Gordon and catch her enthusiasm for the agriculture program! It is so great to see locals go off to college to come back home to support her home roots. Page 12 of 24

I remember when Andy Bunton had the muffler shop and he was fixing my dad's combine and he out a glass packed muffler because it's all he had that would fit. Mans that was a loud thing! How about this Paul Shepherd and Benson Smith were the cops then!

!! !! !

!

Wilson's where everyone played video games in the back, 5th grade Mr. Crutchfield's chalk board full of notes! Riding around in Ricky's 77 firebird, 74 mustang,77 & 78 Monte Carlo, just to name a few Cruising on Friday & Saturday nights beer in the console!

!

Sometimes words work better than pictures to bring back memories. A few weeks back a craze hit of people saying, I am So... the town they grew up in. The comments brought floods of memories back to my brain. Hope they do you also. Why not sit down with friends and family, young and old and remember things that made this area awesome. !

!

I'm so Staley/Liberty that I remember when cruising from BiRite down to the old Handy Mart was the cool thing to do. When Curtis' Theatre played the first movie I ever saw, Ghostbusters. Going to Muzzies to get the best hot dog all the way. When Lake Juno was THE place to be in the summer. When Lowes Food was down where General Dollar was. When washing your car and playing Journey was like a date. When the police department was in the building where Randolph County EMS sits now. The Dairy Queen. The old Handy Mart where they sold the real Slushie. When Liberty School was kindergarten through 8th grade. When Liberty Chair and Stouts Furniture were going strong. Eating at Captain Toms Seafood was a treat. When Wrights Furniture dominated the job force in Staley. Arnold Langley's old store in Staley where he let you have credit until you got paid. Children of The Corn 2 was filmed in Liberty and people from miles around poured into town. Anybody else got any memories???? Don't forget about the ice house when it was in operation.!

!

Steak and Pizza was over close to the Liberty Tavern, Arthur Coble owned the garage that the older men played checkers at ( and you best not mess with them checkers when they got up) The Ice House was across from Muzzy's and it had the best crickets for fishing and coldest beer and blocks of ice. The post office was was beside Curtis Theatre and we will all remember that path from the playground at Liberty School to the pantry! Those were the days!

! !

Holts AMMCO & The Liberty Gulf (Andy & Lucy Bunton) and the Liberty Drive IN! What about Martins Appliances that had the Ruths 5 and dime ( I just remember going in there with dad and seeing appliances and remember the 1 cent candy.)!

!

Arts Town and Country....hoop cheese….! how about Staley's Store with Annie and Buck Holder where Art's Town and Country is now!

!

Browers , JC Overman, Liberty Citgo…What about Les Hinshaws shop that is now liberty tire….Oh Glass Brothers Tractor below arts, crouse's shoe store, how abt Johnny's Place, Deaton's drug store, Toms place had some good food and cold beer!

!

Remember the Children's Place Daycare? Sandra Martin (Brook and Kelly's) mom owned it……I wish we could go back to about 1989...! The Late show at Curtis theater every sat night! And cruising was from BiRite to the car was at the corner bar when we cruised….The old Liberty Drug Store and the Dairy Bar!, Lop Hinshaw & Shim Lineberry!

!

Ph 336-795-0054 / 336-404-9791

I remember watching them burn that house down for the Children of the corn movie. It was cool but sad cuz my Granny Irene had been trying to buy or rent(cant remember which) that house. I watched my first movie at Curtis theater. I think it was Look Who's talking. Lol. I have to stop cuz I have been in this area my whole life & could write a book of memories lol. I love Liberty about as much as I hate it lol!

!

Hamp Carter had a lil cafe down below Staley? He made his own chilli...the best hotdogs…Wayne Ward and Mary stayed at the Staley Post Office for years……Staley people...... Remember Stick Man? He used to walk up and down old 421 catching rides and collecting beer cans!

! !

Remember when Hurricane Janes was a private pool hall?! Ellington's store in staley ...super dollar next to liberty drug ... Shoe shop. Get your shoes repaired M&M restaurant….Remember when Mr. Ellington worked at BiRite before he opened the store down in Staley? How is LuAnn doing? Anyone know?……Have not seen her in years. Remember Wayne Ellington he worked with CP&L. Saw him the other day!

!

I remember the old dime store. Video games after school at the handy mart. Walks through the woods from liberty school to freedom park for baseball practice. Saturday matinees with the coupon books. But most if all friends that were like family to me!!!

!!

If we could all go back and make the Liberty/ Staley area as great as it was then, can you imagine the great childhoods our kids and grandchildren would have? You remember the bank on the corner at stop light Main Street. Jim Wilson moved in there. Then it burned down. Rings hardware was next to…..And who could forget Fall Festival time? My favorite thing was the cake walk and then the chicken pie dinner!

!!

Nobody, other than Muzzies (it will never be Kidd's to me!) and Johnson's in Siler City does a cheese dog the right way. Lots of good memories! I think about that path from the playground to the Pantry every once in a while, and getting crazy mixed-up soft drinks at the Pantry after school. SO glad we had K-8 and not middle school then!!

!! !!

Liberty Oil/Phillips 66 still comes out and pumps your gas! Back a little...Liberty High School was 1 thru 12...Spec Allred's broken leg playing in a game...Dependable Hosiery, Liberty Hosiery, Allsheer Hosiery, Gregson Furniture, Stouts, the Martins and Liberty Furniture, a tornado hits Staley, Purina store burns down, Liberty elementary burns down, and it goes on and on! Great memories!

!! !

What great memories can you come up with…. these are thoughts of numerous folks that have called Liberty and Staley home, I want to thank each and every one for their contributions.

Now that our summer break is over, it is time to ! begin thinking about organizing 4-H clubs, so that ! youth can have an outlet for their creativity and ! energy during the school year! Research shows us ! that the long-term investment youth make in 4-H ! clubs will benefit them in years to come. In addition, 4-H will promote opportunities for youth to participate in activities such as: 4-H presentations; Citizenship Focus, State 4H Congress; livestock shows, camping and community service.! ! 4-H presentations are a super way for club members to build their skill and confidence in public speaking. We all know that as children age, they are being required to journal, complete science projects and even senior projects. Youth who get a head start on public speaking through 4-H are one step ahead of their peers when these opportunities present themselves.!

!

Youth who become engaged in their communities at an early age, learn they can influence people and contribute significantly when involved! As adults, we must create opportunities for youth to become partners with us, making decisions and learning the process of community investment. Involving youth on advisory boards or assisting them to complete a service project are ways to engage youth in the community. Youth can learn so much when caring adults invest time and energy in this direction. !

!

What does it take to assist young people to become healthy, problem-solving, constructive adults? Well, according to the Carnegie Council on Adolescent Development, youth must:! *Find a valued place in a constructive group! *Learn how to form close, durable human relationships! *Earn a sense of worth as a person! *Achieve a reliable basis for making informed choices! *Express constructive curiosity and exploratory behavior! *Find ways of being useful to others! *Believe in a promising future with real opportunities! *Cultivate the inquiring and problem-solving habits of the mind! *Learn to respect democratic values and responsible citizenship! *Build a healthy lifestyle!

The Liberty Leader Newspaper RCC Students Gain Real Life Experience at Petty’s Garage

Five Randolph Community College students participated in a unique job-shadowing experience recently thanks to a new agreement between RCC and Petty’s Garage, Richard Petty’s high performance speed shop in Level Cross. Three Automotive Systems Technology students and two Collision Repair & Refinishing Technology students spent a week working alongside the technicians at Petty’s Garage. RCC has been affiliated with the Richard Petty brand since its state-of-the-art automotive training center was named the Richard Petty Education Center when it opened in 2009. “RCC is delighted to extend our partnership with Richard Petty and his organization,” said RCC President Robert S. Shackleford Jr. “What an exciting opportunity to have students in RCC’s Richard Petty Education Center participate in an internship at Petty’s Garage in Level Cross. I am extremely pleased with this relationship.” The students involved were Jacob Garner of Robbins, Jacob Brown of Ramseur, Jake Flinchum of Seagrove, Justin Lackey of Trinity, and Israel Velazquez of Asheboro. RCC instructors said the participating students were chosen based on their interest, availability, and grade point average.“The Petty’s Garage and RCC student intern agreement will provide a great opportunity for select students to experience some of the lesser common branches of Collision Repair and Automotive skills such as body modifications as well as true restorations and, of course, increased performance,” said Danny Moore, department head for Collision Repair & Refinishing Technology. “The students will also be awakened to the need to absorb all the information and hands-on practices offered in the Collision Repair and Automotive programs while attending RCC.” Don Ashley, department head for Automotive Systems Technology, agreed. “This agreement provides students real world experience in a working shop environment where they can further develop their employability skills; and also gives those students an opportunity to build on the instruction they have received while in our program(s). I believe this will be a great experience for our students!” Greg Steadman, shop foreman at Petty’s Garage, said the students work on whatever current jobs are in the shop at the time of the internship. “We get to see the different talent come through the program, and the students benefit from it because all shops offer a different experience,” he said. In addition, Petty’s Garage will accept resumes Friday, Sep 19 5:30 PM – 8:30 PM from RCC students for job openings that come available during the terms of the agreement. Petty’s Garage already employs one RCC graduate, Robert Smith, who graduated in 2012 with an associate degree in Collision Repair & Refinishing Technology and a diploma Dine in or Take Out in Autobody Repair. Smith is also an instructor for RCC’s Continuing Education autobody classes.
