PART 1 / ABOUT THE CONCEPT
Brainstorming of Chinese five elements
Ying Yang is the fundamental theory in Chinese Culture. It is highly related to Chinese medicine. In this project, I would like to promote this philosophy by celebrating Chinese medicine in a contemporary manner for my independent study. The challenge for me is how to reactivate the image of Chinese elements.

PART 2 / ANALYSIS OF THE BRIEF
“The realisation of my project is challenging, however, when I process and confirm what I am going to do, I become joyful again. It is pleasurable to produce my own project”
PROJECT BACKGROUND
DESIGN APPROACH
Lots of citizens are not familiar much of Chinese culture and their identity as well as the relationship between ying yang and daily lives. As a result, the project would be related to culture and identity as a reminder.
1.0 INFORMATION DESIGN The promotional kid includes interactive electronic book for audience getting practical information in a convenient way. 2.0 RETAILING DESIGN A series of souvenirs which aim at strengthen the impression and application of Chinese philosophy : Five Elements such as post card, the packaging of tea bag and promotional kid would be produced. 3.0 USER EXPERIENCE DESIGN It is impressive for user could explore the Chinese philosophy by first hand experience with interaction of the project. As a result, an event named “ The Guide of Five Element would be suggested for promoting Chinese philosophy through the workshop. The organizational objective is to introduce the Chinese ancient bronze art in a multi-digital approach to audience.
PART 3 / RELEVANT RESEARCH / FIELD TRIP FIRST HAND Through the field trip, the detailed background of ancient Chinese bronze would be studied.
SECOND HAND The supplementary information would be studied from official website through the internet.
MUSEUM VISITING Based on observing the attributes of art works, the atmosphere and the interior design would be concerned while designing the interface of the final year project appliances.
PART 3 / RESEARCH / FOUR SEASONS
IN-DEPTH OBSERVATION From now on, I need yo find out the similarity and difference between different seasons.
THE RESEARCH ON HEALTH IN ACCORDANCE WITH FOUR SEASONS
Spring TCM believes that springtime and the liver share the same property of mu (the element of wood). So, in that season, the liver tends to get overactive, creating discomfort.
Autumn A defining feature of autumn is dryness, which is most likely to affect the lungs and respiratory tract. “It is critical for the body to have enough water.”
The stomach and spleen share the properties of tu (the element of earth), which is the opposite of mu. If opposition between these two elements becomes too strong, the body will become uncomfortable.
In autumn, people tend to be unaware of the fact that they are losing water quickly, since they don’t actually sweat. But, in fact, the dry air will cause water to evaporate from the body 24 hours through the pores, unnoticed.t
Summer In traditional Chinese medicine, summer is a time when “Yang energy” predominates so we should nourish and strengthen Yin to stay balanced.
Winter Winter is a time to take good care of the yang aspect of the body,” says Wang Yuntao, a traditional Chinese medicine doctor with Beijing Dongwen Clinic.
With this understanding of food energy, there are a number of food choices we can make to cool down our over-heated bodies in summer. Raw foods, cold foods and drinks have more of a cooling effect than cooked foods.
The function of yang can be compared to a cup of hot water: Inside a warm environment, it stays warm longer; but inside a cold environment, it turns cold faster. The yang factor is the ability to keep warm, Wang explains.
Spring In spring, people should sleep late and wake up early to absorb “yang” for eliminating the “ying” accommodated during winter. The suggested hours: 23:00-7:00
PART 3 / RESEARCH / INTERNET / CHINESE MEDICINE CHINESE MEDICINE It is a broad range of medicine practices sharing common concepts which have been developed in China and are based on a tradition of more than 2,000 years, including various forms of herbal medicine, acupuncture, massage (Tui na), exercise (qigong), and dietary therapy. In traditional Chinese herbal medicine, plant elements are by far the most commonly, but not solely, used substances; animal, human, and mineral products are also utilized. The effectiveness of this medical system remains poorly documented. There are concerns over a number of potentially toxic Chinese medicinals that consist of plants, animal parts, and minerals. There is a lack of existing costeffectiveness research
Five Elements An ancient philosophical concept, the Wu Xing (Five Elements) theory held that its five phases mirrored the structure of the cosmos. Each phase has a complex series of associations with different aspects of nature, describing relationships between the composition and phenomena of the physical universe. Cycles The doctrine of five phases describes two cycles: a generating or creation cycle (circle-shaped) and an overcoming or destruction cycle (star-shaped), and interactions between the phases.
PART 3 / RESEARCH / CHINESE CULTURE ON TEXTURE
CHINESE BRONZE The history of China and its metallurgical advancements in the area of making and appreciating ritualistic Bronzes starting around 2,000 BC is a fascinating one. Over the centuries these powerfully shaped marvels have become a symbol of antiquity and art. Ancient Chinese bronze ware fall into three category's: ritual vessels, weapons, and then miscellaneous objects. Bronze come in many varieties such as the knife, sword, spear, halberd, axe, and dagger.
CALLIGRAPHY In early imperial times, calligraphy and painting in China were the most highly appreciated arts in court circles and were produced almost exclusively by amateurs, usually aristocrats and scholar-officials, who had the leisure time necessary to perfect the technique and sensibility necessary for great brushwork. It is not only the experience of art but also the medium for people to develop their decent personality.
“With Photoshop, of course. New media was classically trained in Chinese painting and calligraphy from a very young age but uses digital tools to capture that time-tested aesthetic.
PART 4 / RESEARCH / EXISTING DESIGN PROJECTS RELATED CHI-
COMPARISON The comparison between the existing design projects related to Chinese elements and mine is ultimately different. In my project, the ancient traditional atmosphere is applied on the appliance with practical information for the audience. In contrast, the existing design project showcases the Chinese elements in a graphic and western manner in order to attract the audience to browse.

Virtual reality (VR) It sometimes referred to as multimedia, is a computersimulated environment that can simulate physical presence in places in the real world or imagined worlds. Most current virtual reality environments are primarily visual experiences, displayed either on a computer screen or through special stereoscopic displays.
Furthermore, virtual reality covers remote communication environments which provide virtual presence of users with the concepts of telepresence and telexistence or a virtual artifact (VA) either through the use of standard input devices such as a keyboard and mouse, or through multimodal devices such as a wired glove, the Polhemus, and omnidirectional treadmills.
The simulated environment can be similar to the real world in order to create a lifelike experience—for example, in simulations for pilot or combat training—or it can differ significantly from reality, such as in VR games. In practice, it is currently very difficult to create a high-fidelity virtual reality experience, because of technical limitations on processing power, image resolution, and
communication bandwidth. However, the technology’s proponents hope that such limitations will be overcome as processor, imaging, and data communication technologies become more powerful and cost-effective over time.
PART 4 / RESEARCH / PROJECTS RELATED CHINESE ELEMENTS
In Chinese bookbinding, before punching the holes for the stitching, 2 holes are punched on the spine edge of the book block to insert "paper staples." Paper staples are used to hold the sheets together before doing any further work on the book block. They serve as a somewhat temporary "binding agent." Paper staples also help to reinforce the binding, since they themselves hold the pages together.
Jing zhe zhuan (經折裝)
It is said that this form of binding was initially designed for “the people on the back of horse” once roamed in Central Asia who were Buddhists and wanted to read Buddhist scriptures conveniently on the back of horse — imagine you’re reading while riding a horse. You certainly don’t wanna the pages of the text all fly away! So comes this bind style that holds all pages together and is easy to flip open and fold close! This style is called Jing zhe zhuan. literally scripture-folding style.

What is the philosophy? In ancient China, Taoist scholars and mystics developed a profound

understanding of life based on minute observation of nature. They understood that everything in the Universe comes out of the ‘unnamable’ , the TAO, which manifests as the dual principles of Yin and Yang, i.e. heaven and earth, day and night, masculine

PART7 / CONCLUSION Written Statement/Evaluation Report Lots of citizens are not familiar much of Chinese culture and their identity as well as the relationship between ying yang and daily lives. one of the major goal go the campaign is to introduce the definition of balance and harmony in Chinese philosophy and how are they applied in daily lives. The campaign aims at bringing the interactive relationships between the daily lives of urban citizens and Chinese culture such as five element. It is a combination of Chinese philosophy, living environment and human being. This abstract concept would be presented as a series of promotional materials which would focus on different aspects of Chinese culture such as how five elements related to the organs in our body. The style of the electronic book and other possible outcomes would based on two main visual Chinese elements which are bronze surface and calligraphy while the Chinese philosophy such as leaving space and balance are injected. I believe that the variety of promotional method would definitely influence the perception towards the campaign so as the design approach would be divided into three aspects. For the information design, the promotional kid includes interactive electronic book for audience getting practical information in a convenient way. For the retailing design, a series of souvenirs which aim at strengthen the impression and application of Chinese philosophy : Five Elements such as post card, the packaging of tea bag and promotional kid would be produced. For the user experience design, It is impressive for user could explore the Chinese philosophy by first hand experience with interaction of the project. As a result, an event named “ The Guide of Five Element would be suggested for promoting Chinese philosophy through the workshop. The organizational objective is to introduce the Chinese ancient bronze art in a multi-digital approach to audience.
