Director’s Corner Cocktail Chatter and the Third-Generation Expat Where are you from? What brought you to Malaysia? How long have you been here? How do you like it so far? Cocktail party questions, each friendly and seemingly simple to answer. Texas. Work. Six months. So far, so good! What I usually omit, unless my listener seems genuinely interested are my family’s connection to this region, my reasons for coming here and my expectations for what this experience will bring, as these are much more detailed and complicated, as any expat can relate. I grew up in southeast Asia, years spent without realizing not many other kids grow up like this. My parents, younger sister and I jumped around this region, moving every year or so – Kuala Lumpur, Shenzhen, Hong Kong, Singapore, Taipei, and Singapore again before returning to the U.S. – Austin, Texas, and on to subsequent moves, both U.S. and international.
Board of Directors President Jennifer Guthrie President.aam@gmail.com 1st Vice President Diane Tenney FirstVP.aam@gmail.com 2nd Vice President Vacant SecondVP.aam@gmail.com
Were your parents diplomats? Army family? Nope. I’m the daughter of an American businessman who grew up in Indonesia, the son of Baptist missionary parents. He loved this region and considers it his native land; he saw great potential in its business climate and its people. Though my parents and sister now reside in the U.S., my father continues to have many business ties back to Asia and is filled with jealousy at every picture I text her with: “Look at what’s for lunch!”
Secretary Ann Blacklock Secretary1.aam@gmail.com
What brought me back to Malaysia isn’t terribly typical either – although I hope one day that’s different. A bit unusual for an expat couple, it was my career that led my fiancé and me to Kuala Lumpur. My company transferred me to our Malaysian office, one of our many international locations. My fiancé, brave soul he is, joined me and found his own job here, leading marketing and business development for a local company.
Publications Director Kim Starr Editor.KLAmerican@gmail.com
These first six months have been incredible – both for us as a newly engaged couple and for me as a professional woman. Six months in and we’re still excited about discovering our new city, eating more than we should and the particular joy of air conditioning in a sweltering climate.

Roll out those lazy, crazy, hazy days of summer…
AmericanMagazine Team
The dog days of summer are here and that old song has been rattling around my head. I was fortunate enough to escape KL’s heat and haze for a month while on my home leave to Ohio and New York. I grew up with the four seasons and since I miss the change of weather and wardrobe I’ve become a bit of a weather tourist – spring’s blossoms in Japan, autumn’s colors in Korea, and snow and glaciers in New Zealand. My idea of what’s nearby and what’s a short flight have changed too. During my recent travels I couldn’t resist a stop in London as it now seems “so close” to New York. There, I was able to straddle the prime meridian – one foot in the eastern hemisphere and one foot in the west - how suitable to my current state of mind!

In this month’s issue, member Rush Seale talks about his experience volunteering for the Malaysian Nature Society and member Latisha Merican tells us about Hari Raya including recipes for your celebration. I know our members like to cook (and eat) so I hope to include more recipes in future issues. Speaking of recipes, August’s coffee morning is themed “Reading and Recipes” so if you are in town, please plan to stop by, and if you are not, I will include a best-of recap in a future issue.

Membership How is it possible that we are writing for the August issue already? As I write this, many of you are “home” in the USA visiting family and friends and I am about to do the same. While we are doing our visiting, others have been moving to KL and becoming new members of AAM. Remember what it feels like to be in a new place and having to sort out the basics of life? It’s scary and exciting both at the same time and certainly “character building”! Every move has its challenges and rewards and one of the best rewards is meeting new people and making new friends while discovering and exploring one’s new home country. As you return from your home leaves and holidays, try to recapture those feelings – especially the ones that made you feel like the new kid at school mid-term, without knowing anyone. Make it a point to come to our Coffee Morning on 22 August or the Lunch Bunch on 21 August or our annual Shrimp Boil on 21 September and meet and welcome friends – both old and new.
Read Any Good Books Lately? It’s always summer here in Malaysia so it’s never too late to start your summer reading! Hard copy? We want your books to share/ exchange. Kindle? We want e-reading recommendations. Bring those and something to “nosh” on to the August Coffee Morning - details on page 10. Hope to see you there!
We want to increase the size of our club so that we can continue to offer new and fun activities and events but most of all, we want all of our members to feel that AAM is the first place they can turn to for questions, advice and to make new friends in their new home. Make it a point to reach out to our new members and together, let’s make the most of this amazing opportunity that we have been given to live in this part of the world. Update your calendars to make sure you save the dates and we look forward to seeing you soon! Cheers,
Merrie Braden Membership Director

arawak is the state once ruled by adventurous British explorers, rather than the British government. James Brooke became the White Rajah of Sarawak in the mid-1800s and subsequently, his relatives took over for a reign lasting around 100 years. The capital city of Kuching is a charming city and there is plenty to see and do during your stay. We have arranged a full weekend for any expats who like the idea of joining a group of fellow expats and having the benefit of a knowledgable expat escort. You only need to take one day off work as you will fly over on Friday afternoon and be back on Sunday night The trip will keep everyone fully occupied and give you a wonderful opportunity to see some of the most interesting sights including the cultural village with examples of the various styles of long houses used by native tribes as well as a chance to see the famous orang utans in their naturals setting. Price per person is being finalized but we expect it to be around RM1,600 including round trip airfare from KL (subject to change). Tonsillitis & Sinusitis: Common Conditions
t u o b A h c u M w o n K ’t n o You D
Dr Balachandran Appoo Consultant ENT Head and Neck Surgeon MBBS (MAN), MS, ORL, HEAD NECK (UKM), CMIA, Fellowship in Head, Neck Oncosurgery (Aus), Fellowship in Oromaxillofacial Trauma & Oncosurgery (Aus) Tropicana Medical Centre
Tonsils are lymphoid organs that everyone is born with. It starts out big in a baby but as she or he grows the tonsil will generally become smaller. Eventually, it will become tiny and functionless by the time one reaches adulthood. In some people however it becomes swollen, hence the condition is known as tonsillitis. The swelling of the glands is due to hyperactive tonsil cells which can be activated by many causes such as allergic reaction to certain food, infection in the mouth, viral fever, common cough and cold as well as blockage by foreign objects in the throat (e.g. fish bones). Whilst mostly a non fatal disease, if left untreated, tonsillitis has been known to lead to serious complications such as sub-acute bacterial endocarditis a condition where tonsils can be a source of infection that passes vegetative bacteria to the heart valves resulting in its failure. Sinuses are empty cavities on the face that are lined with mucus membranes. Sinusitis refers to inflammation of the sinuses. Healthy sinuses are clear and contain no bacteria or other germs. During sinusitis, the sinus openings become blocked causing mucus builds up, leading to bacterial infection of the mucus. Sinusitis is not a serious disease and in most instances it can be treated. However, if left untreated, the puss in the sinuses can break out into other parts of the face such as eyeballs and cheeks. In addition, sinusitis can also lead to osteomyelitis, a serious infection of the frontal bones.

KL American August 2013
Inflammation of the sinus can be due to the blockage of the holes or the outlets through which phlegm and mucus are pushed out of the sinus cavity. This results in the swelling of the sinus cavity. This outlet obstruction could be caused by a bent nose bone on the inside, large tissues or turbinate, or infection in the outlet area due to polyps or tumour. The most common treatment for tonsillitis is proper hydration and if needed, antibiotics. Nevertheless if it is recurrent and severe, for example, if a person has a severe bout of tonsillitis where he or she may miss work or school at least three to four times in a year, this warrants the removal of the tonsils. Before removing it however, it is important for the
specialist to first investigate and determine the source of infection and inflammation. There are many methods to remove the tonsils. These include using knife in conventional surgery, burning devices, strings or snipping the tonsils off. These methods may cause a lot of bleeding and at times patients will take longer to heal. Here at Tropicana Medical Centre, we use the latest surgical method, which is via laser surgery. Laser surgery is very precise and very well defined. There is minimal blood loss and minimal scarring, allowing the patients to heal faster. Furthermore, with laser, the tonsils can be removed to the very last bit without damaging muscles or underlying tissues. This makes laser, a safer alternative for patients. In order to treat sinusitis effectively, the most important thing is for the patient and the doctor to understand the pathology of the sinuses. The next step will be to identify the symptoms. These include regular flu, frequent headaches, ears feeling blocked when a person lies down or regular tonsillitis. Following this the doctor will remove the blockages through various methods in order to create airway in the sinuses and allow drainage of the mucus that have been accumulating in the sinus cavities. If sinusitis is not so severe, there are various available antibiotics and nasal decongestants in the market that a patient can use. Nasal decongestant is a type of spray that can shrink the tissues in the nose which have been causing blockage to the airway passages. Once they shrink the airways will be cleared enough to allow drainage of the mucus and this can heal the inflammation. Should sinusitis be severe, an effective way to treat the condition is also through laser surgery. Similar to the laser surgery done in tonsillitis, laser surgery for sinusitis is very precise, less invasive and results in minimal scarring and lesser bleeding, all of which contribute to faster recovery. Once the laser has been used to reduce the tissues that caused the blockage, the buildup of mucus can be quickly drained out and patients can heal quickly.

Close encounter at the KL Bird Park
Since I came to KL two years ago from Washington DC with my wife’s work, we’ve made friends (some through AAM events), had a baby and tried to travel some. I like showing my young son animals native only to Malaysia and experiences that you can only have when this close to the nature around us. And yet I often read in the Wall Street Journal or my hometown Washington Post about deforestation from palm oil plantations, the radioactive waste from mining operations in local fishing waters, or threats to iconic species like orangutans and pygmy elephants. After seeing first hand the endless groves of palm trees when flying to Kuching and the areas now closed to diving, I wanted to do something about it. I wanted my young son to be able to see the same animals and have the same experiences, so several months ago after hearing about them from friends, I started volunteering for the Malaysia Nature Society. Since 1940, Malaysian Nature Society (MNS) has worked towards conserving and promoting Malaysia’s natural heritage. MNS’s work includes environmental education, conservation, as well as policy and advocacy. The organization works in hundreds of schools and in communities to raise awareness of wildlife and nature. In conservation, through campaigning and raising public awareness, MNS has had a number of successes through the years from helping to preserve the giant leathery turtles in Terengganu to helping to establish Kuala Selangor National Park. The organization also produces one of the longest running scientific journals in Asia, continuing to share discoveries worldwide from the oldest rainforest in the world that Malaysia holds. These achievements have been recognized worldwide from groups such as UNEP and Birdlife International as well as domestically. Of course doing all this work takes funds and MNS is solely reliant on donations from supportive people and companies. Since I worked in banking for years in the US, I volunteered to help MNS with their fundraising and have been coming into their KL headquarters to support the team. The few days a week I help at MNS, I support their team in developing relationships with international partners and donors.

Even living in the middle of urban KL there are days when the smoke from forest clearing fires comes over the city and makes it hard to breathe and go outside. Those are the days when I stay inside and read and often watch old movies. One of my favorites is Treasure of the Sierra Madre with Humphrey Bogart as one of a group that goes to the mountains to dig for gold. After they’ve found it, Bogart and the others are eager to leave and spend their new wealth until stopped by their wise, older partner. He tells them, “We’ve wounded this mountain. It’s our duty to close her wounds. It’s the least we can do to show our gratitude for all the wealth she’s given us.” Malaysia has given my family, me and many other Americans a great experience, for me working with Malaysia Nature Society is my way of saying thank you. To find out more or to support MNS and its conservation work, please visit www.mns. my or email: mns@mns.org.my

Perspectives Selamat Hari Raya! Story and photos by Latisha Merican On August 8 Muslims around the world celebrate Eid, or Hari Raya, as it is called in Malaysia. Literally “Day of Celebration”, Eid marks the end of the holy month of Ramadan in which adherents fast every day from before dawn till dusk. From July 10 to August 7, Muslims who are able-bodied and of sound mind wake up before dawn to have a nourishing meal that will sustain them during the day ahead. This could be a simple breakfast or a full-fledged meal prepared fresh. Fasting begins just before the subuh prayers, about 5:55am in Kuala Lumpur. Apart from food and drink, one abstains from all worldly pleasures during the daylight hours and concentrates on purifying the body and mind in order to get closer to God. Unnecessary activities are replaced with prayers, and the fasting itself is done while going about one’s usual daily work. At about 7:30pm, the daily fasting ends with the Maghrib prayer. One is advised to eat something small, traditionally a few dates and have a drink of water. The fuller meal is eaten after the Isyak prayer, an hour later. There is much to rejoice and be thankful for after managing the twenty-nine days of fasting. Ramadan ends with the praising of God by the menfolk at the mosque, while the ladies get busy in the kitchen, cooking up a storm. Adult children whose parents or in-laws don’t live in the same city would be making their way to their hometown. This is called “balik kampung”. Michael and I used to join the long queue in Tuas, Singapore, to come back to my parents’ home in KL, our car laden with dishes that I had prepared for them and their guests. On the morning of Hari Raya, Muslims dress up in their traditional outfits. Malay men and boys wear baju Melayu, an outfit consisting of a long-sleeved top with a mandarin collar and five buttonholes; pants; a brocade sampin, which looks like a wraparound skirt; and a songkok, an oval hat, and capals on their feet. The conservative Malay ladies may opt for the abaya and hijab which is similar to what the ladies in the Arab states wear. My personal favorite is the kebaya - a short front-closure lace blouse with a hemline that tapers to the front. It is paired with a sarong and is meant to compliment the wearer’s figure. Slippers or shoes complete the picture. 20

My Son Shiraz asking Forgiveness from My Niece Sara
Outfits admired, devotees make their way to the mosque for the Hari Raya prayer, after which they either return home and wait for the first guests to arrive, or start their visiting. For people like me whose parents live in KL, it is a joy to drive around the almostdeserted streets as the traffic jam has been temporarily transferred to the small towns. Back at their parents’ home, children ask forgiveness from their elders for any wrongdoing, and forgiveness is in turn given, while the little ones delight in receiving green envelopes containing money. The next few days are spent reconnecting with family members, and also for enjoying traditional food. Dishes on offer vary from state to state, as well as from household to household. My parents always have the ayam masak merah, chicken simmered in a red sauce; lontong, vegetables cooked in coconut milk accompanied by peanut sauce; and everyone’s favorite sambal goreng. Tedious to make, it involves stirfrying thinly-sliced onions, garlic, chillies and French beans and julienned ginger and galangal together with beef, tofu and shrimp which have first been sauteed with blended onions, garlic, ginger and chillies. All of these delicacies are enjoyed with rice cakes. In the kampungs where relatives live fairly near each other, visits tend to be done on foot. Invites are not necessary, and all are welcome. When we visited my maternal grandmother in Muar, Johor, we would sometimes lock up the house and join our guests in visiting other relatives. The entourage would get
Perspectives bigger as the day wore on and if you happened to be driving, you would be able to see and pass groups of colorfully dressed ‘pilgrims’ walking by the side of the road. In recent years, and especially in the big cities, it is acceptable to hold open houses. Oral invites are given out, and guests are received on a particular day. Occassionally the hosts order food to cater to the different taste palates of their guests and a part of the garden or driveway would be dedicated to stalls offering the different types of Malaysian fare which is not usually associated with Hari Raya, like mutton soup, noodles, satay, etc. Hari Raya falls on the first day of the month of Syawal, which has thirty days. Because family members are now far-flung, sometimes it does take all thirty days to be able to see everyone one wants to. A few days after celebrating Hari Raya in KL, Michael and I and our three boys and helpers would make the trek back to Singapore where we would host our own open house for our Singaporean friends and relatives to enjoy Malaysian cuisine. We now live in KL and our balik kampung journey takes just ten minutes. However, it is no less significant. And afterwards, we will be hosts at our own open house. All are welcome. Just call first! A large pot of Lontong bound for my parents’ home
The tedious-to-make Sambal Goreng
Latisha’s Lontong (serves about 8)
Ingredients A • 1 – 2 long eggplants, cut into ½ inch cubes • 5 – 6 French beans, sliced on the bias into inch-long pieces • ½ pc dried tofu strip (fucuk), soaked in water until soft (about thirty minutes), then cut into two-inch pieces • 2 pieces firm square tofu (tahu), cut into 8 pieces (not too small as they may break up during cooking) • 2 -3 red and green chilies, sliced on the bias into inch-long pieces • 8 2 inch x 1 inch pieces of tempeh (optional) Ingredients B • ¾ tbsp belacan • 4 red onions • 3 garlic cloves • 1” ginger Others • 8 pieces of shrimp, peeled and deveined • 3 - 4 cups coconut milk or 1 cup coconut cream (try Kara brand) mixed with 2 cups water • A little cellophane noodles (suhun/ tanghoon), soaked in hot water for about 2 minutes, then drained • 1 tsp turmeric powder • 2 tbsp cooking oil • 1 tsp salt, more if needed Method • Blend ingredients B with quarter cup of water in the blender • Heat oil in medium-sized pot • Saute the blended ingredients for about two minutes or until it’s aromatic • Add the shrimp and saute for half a minute • Add the turmeric powder and saute for half a minute • Turn down the fire to low and add the coconut milk or cream, stir gently • After about two minutes, add ingredients A, and simmer on very low fire until cooked through, about half an hour. Do not overcook the vegetables, and do not let the coconut milk boil, or it will turn lumpy • Add suhun, simmer for two minutes Add salt, then turn off the fire How to enjoy: • Boil some rice cakes (ketupat) according to the instructions. Cool completely. Cut into bite-size pieces and place in individual bowls • Ladle some lontong goodies along with the coconut gravy • Top with about 2 tbsp peanut sauce Mix everything together on a spoon
Notes: • If you’re not sure what some of the ingredients are, you can go to the local market and ask the seller for them using the local names. They may not understand the English terms • For a vegetarian option you can omit the shrimp and the belacan Belacan • There are two kinds of belacan, the granules that come in small jars like the ones Maggi makes, or in slabs. I prefer the slab as to me it makes the food taste better, but it needs to be sliced thinly, then toasted either on a saucepan or in a toaster oven. Caution: toasting belacan smells! • Buy the Malaysian-made belacan for this dish as the Thai ones taste different Suhun • Suhun tends to make the dish a bit slimy if kept a few days. It’s best to enjoy it immediately and do not reheat more than once. If you’re not sure, you can omit it
Peanut Sauce
(to go with Latisha’s Lontong) Ingredients A • 10 dried chilies • 5 shallots • 2 garlic cloves • ½ inch ginger • 1 tsp belacan Other ingredients • 50 gms toasted peanuts, coarsely ground • 1 tbsp tamarind (asam jawa), soaked in hot water for about 5 minutes, then strained. Reserve the juice and discard the seeds • 1 stalk lemon grass, bruised • 1 tbsp sugar, more if needed • 4 tbsp cooking oil • ½ tsp salt Method • Blend ingredients A with half a cup of water • Heat oil in a pan on medium high fire • Saute blended ingredients and lemon grass • Keep sauteing until aromatic and you can see a layer of oil on the top • Add tamarind juice and sugar. Mix well • Add the peanuts and salt. Adjust to taste. It should be slightly hot, sour and sweet Note: • This peanut sauce also goes very well with satay!
