President’s Message Hi everyone! It has been just over two months since I stepped into the position of President of the AAM. Even though not much time has passed, it is clear to me that all the Board members have already earned a “shout out” for their willingness to attend extra meetings and be patient as I learn the ropes. Schools in America may be out for summer, but the AAM Board is still very much session, if at times with a margarita in one hand and working from remote locations. But seriously, all the meetings over coffee cost not only their time, but also their drinks and snacks, and the investment these ladies are making in the AAM and the earnestness with which they approach their roles is heartening. If you find yourself in town over the summer and all your friends are away, why not offer to give us a hand with some of our summer projects? Stephanie Emilo and I are working on a National Cancer Society fundraiser in conjunction with Pink October and would love to have some help. Maybe now is the time to start some groundwork on offering a class at the AAM if you are a cook with a special talent to share or an artist with a craft at which we can try our hands. If you’d like to give writing a go, Kim Starr is always looking for interesting articles for the KL American, and most of all, the charities the AAM supports always need volunteers so this might be a great time to start lending a hand when their normal volunteers might be on long summer holidays. However you are spending your summer, I hope you are making the most of your expat experiences. I have some short trips around Southeast Asia planned, and I am writing this article from Patong Beach in Thailand. As far as the AAM is concerned, when I think of how many great things we have in store for our members this Fall, the future is so bright that I have to wear shades.

Wow, those calendar pages just seem to tear themselves off the wall, don’t they? Hard to believe, but summer is here. Many of you are going back to the States for a while, and others are choosing to travel to distant, exotic locations.

Since moving to KL, I often feel like I’m in a “time warp” as things like the daily high and low temperatures, the sunrise and sunset times, or the plants in bloom vary little thoughout the year. On a recent trip to Paris, I reveled in the flowering gardens and the 9pm sunset but hated the 5am wake-up call! I’m off to Chicago, Ohio and New York for a few weeks at the end of June and am really looking forward to the long days, the roadside wildflowers and the lightning bugs at night! I’m also very excited to be able to spend the Fourth in the good ol’ US of A for the first time in two years, but I am a little torn over seeing the fireworks over the East River or on the beach at Coney Island after a Cyclones game. Funny, those small things you miss from home!

Event and Activities reservations can be made via email (klamerican.info@ gmail.com), in person or via fax. • The AAM office staff will send a confirmation receipt and whether or not the activity is still available if the reservation is made via email or fax. • Reservations MUST be cancelled before the individual deadline OR FIVE DAYS prior to the activity in order to receive a refund. • For Events/Activities that have a minimum attendance required, if it is not achieved it may be cancelled or rescheduled Please remember that while some times this policy can be amended (if the instructor is more flexible) you should not expect that to be the case when trying to book yourself into an event/activity late. While the office staff strives to include all interested members in these activities some times it is just not possible due to constraints either on space or instructor requirements. Community Service Hi all. I’m the new co-director of the Community Service, stepping into some big shoes left by Claire Hines. I’m sure we can all appreciate Claire’s hard work and big heart for good causes. I’m lucky that Karen Beham has kindly taken me under her wing to show me the ropes. As you may know, the AAM supports many organizations in a number of ways – with monetary and in kind donations (food, school supplies, equipment) and by spotlighting charities and events in the KL American. And at the famous and fabulous AAM annual Christmas Charity bazaar, we not only raise funds but we also offer a select group of charities a table free of charge. And of course, we offer ourselves – as volunteers. Currently, Karen and I are traveling around KL and its environs visiting these charities. We’ve been lucky to have a ‘team of members’ who share their insight and expertise (and even their driver). Our goal is to meet face to face with the directors, pupils and residents to see firsthand how to best use AAM resources. You’re welcome to join us. I’m happy to report so far it’s been great! We’ve met awesome people – those who’ve dedicated their lives to a cause, volunteers, and most importantly the people that AAM donations help to support. These children and adults, from all walks of life, some with so many obstacles to overcome, really make me smile. And whatever we, as organization or as an individual can do, is appreciated and accepted with grace and dignity. It’s been a great life lesson so far. Here’s an update on our visit to RUMAH HOPE: A “sanctuary” is how Rumah Hope describes itself. Founded in 1994, Rumah Hope is a social ministry of Good Hope Lutheran Church, ELCM, and is run by volunteers. It is home for neglected and abused children, providing shelter, food, care and security. At the time of our visit, there were 57 children including five Myanmar refugees and 14 Orang Asli. We had the pleasure of meeting some of these young, bright people – reading in the library, doing their laundry, playing guitar, horsing around – normal kid stuff. Some ways you can help: • The children keep their dormitories clean and neat, but need a place to secure their belongings. Locking storage cupboards would really help. (Any talented carpenter out there?) • Toiletries for boys and girls, e.g. shampoo, hair gel, deodorant, razors, hair pins and ornaments. • Happy Meals or KFC vouchers – it’s always a treat! School Supply Drive

Before you take off for the summer, why not drop off any papers, pencils, backpacks, or other school supplies at the AAM for a back-to-schooldrive for our charities? We will set up a basket at the AAM office where you can donate supplies throughout the year to help meet the needs of our children.

Activities Coordinators – Have you been on a great tour that you want to share with the rest of the AAM community or heard about a fun thing to do that you are dying to try but need more people? Well, the AAM has a monthly Activities Meeting and we are in search of people who would like to coordinate activities for our membership. The KL American is always looking for submissions from our members. Perspectives Observing Ramadan and Eid Story and photos by Latisha Merican June 29, 2014 marks the beginning of Ramadan, the 9th month of the Islamic lunar calendar, a month of fasting for Muslims. Fasting is the fourth pillar of Islam and is obligatory for every mentally and physically able Muslim who has reached puberty. During the daylight hours, food and water, along with other worldly pleasures are abstained from, in an effort to purify one’s self spiritually and to get closer to God. One’s patience is tested; he is also humbled as he remembers and empathizes with the less fortunate who may be unable to satisfy their hunger not just for thirty days, but all year long. Kuala Lumpur inhabitants begin fasting just before dawn and break their fast at sunset (from 5:50am to 7:20pm). To prepare for the day ahead, one wakes up about an hour before sunrise to have a meal, either breakfast, or, like me, a cup of black coffee, a fruit shake and a glass of water. In some households, the women actually wake up even earlier to prepare a spread reminiscent of dinner. Going back to sleep after the first prayers would be a sacrilege.

To benefit from the full fasting experience, the daily routine is adhered to, although perhaps the physical activities are toned down a tad. Back in high school, I attended karate sessions as usual, before going to classes. Buka puasa or iftar (breaking of fast) is looked forward to and whole conversations revolve around the menu. Some break their fast with the main meal; however, to prevent bloating and the temptation of gorging oneself, and thus failing the self-restraint test, it is advisable to quench one’s thirst first and have something small, such as the traditional dates, and have the larger meal after prayers. Thirty-odd years of fasting have taught me that I can’t eat much: I make do with a cup of black local coffee, water, two dates and a very small meal of half a cup of rice and two dishes of a meat and vegetable. Before bedtime I will have another three glasses of water and perhaps one Malay kuih. In the first 10 days I will have usually lost about 10lbs, before the weight loss slows down as the body adjusts. One of the “perks” of celebrating Ramadan in a Muslim country are the bazaars which start about 4:00 pm and end late at night. They mainly sell food; however, there is a huge one on Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman which offers everything you may need to celebrate Hari Raya: complete outfits for the trendiest dresser as well as the most conservative, money

Perspectives Sometime during this month, and before the Eid prayers, the zakat payment, a compulsory charity for the poor, is made. An amount equivalent to 2.3kilograms of that country’s staple diet, which is RM7.00 of rice, is paid by the head of the family for himself and each dependent, traditionally at the mosque. Now this contribution can be done online.

At the Bazaar: Sitting Elephant brand sarongs for ladies and men (lelong means auction) packets, sparklers, phone covers and home furnishings. More familiar with the Singapore bazaars, I made my first ever trek only last year and I urge you to experience it. Keep some caveats in mind: beware of pickpockets, wear comfortable shoes, eschew the strollers and place your young children in carriers or better yet, leave them at home. It is very crowded. Nearby parking is available but you will have to wait in the jam to get to it. And although the price tags are displayed, make sure you bargain and be prepared to walk away. Chances are that the traders will match your price, especially in the last few days, as they try to clear their stock in order to travel back to their kampungs to prepare for Hari Raya. There are some Ramadan traditions unique to Malaysia. When I was little, we would visit my grandmother who lived in Muar in a kampung house on stilts surrounded by almost two acres of land. Unless you’re very near the house, it is pitch dark at night and you risked stepping on the monitor lizard that lived underneath the house, or disturbing other creatures that roamed at night. My uncles would light dozens of pelitas (paraffin lamps) and my cousins and I would traipse with them as they went along the perimeter fence, hanging one every few feet. Some of the lights could be seen flickering merrily from the house, and it brought joy, especially towards the end of Ramadan.

Towards the end of Ramadan the preparations for Hari Raya begin. For the past 12 years I have been cooking for my parents, as they are getting on in age (my dad is 85). I would cook seven dishes for about 80 people. When we were in Singapore, our car would be loaded with containers of food to be dropped off at my parents’ before the big day or stored at the hotel temporarily. Now that we live just 10 minutes away, the dishes are brought on Hari Raya day itself, some portioned out to be enjoyed immediately, and some put aside for guests. The next few days are spent visiting my extended family or welcoming them at my parents’ home. It is a joyous time as we reconnect with relatives and friends, and the children delight in the receiving of duit raya, which is stuffed in green packets. About a week into Hari Raya, my husband Michael and I will host our own open house, and we will cook another round of dishes. In Singapore we invited mainly friends and introduced them to Malaysian cuisine. Now we invite neighbors and a few relatives, as most of them would have come to my parents’. Hari Raya is an exhausting time as we try to meet with as many people as we can in the span of a few days, and can be quite a culture shock for someone who comes from a small family to be schlepped from one house to another. My husband takes it in stride though, and just for a few days a year, our kids’ routines fly out the window as they stuff their faces with cookies and chocolates, play sparklers with their cousins till way past their bedtime, and generally go crazy. Some companies allow their Muslim employees to leave at about 4:00 pm, in order to go home and prepare for buka puasa, usually with the understanding that one works through lunch. In recent years it has become fashionable to go for buka puasa buffets, held at hotels and restaurants. I tried this once a long time ago, but discovered that I really couldn’t do justice to the spread and afterwards was uncomfortably full and unable to move. I felt that surely this contradicted the reason for fasting and never did it again.

Perspectives IDEAS Academy - The Little School with a Big Dream Story and photos by Helen Mastache The Students Josh is diligent. He is the only student who turns in his homework every time. He is happy for this chance, this opportunity, and he will not squander it. Josh previously worked in a restaurant from 9:00 am until 10:00 pm, six days a week. The restaurant was in Subang Jaya, a long commute on public transportation from his home in Pudu, so he slept at the restaurant. He made RM900 a month when he began, washing dishes and busing tables. But his studies paid off, and because of his good English skills, he was promoted to waiter, with an increase in salary to RM1000 a month. Josh spent his birthday working all day, then spent the night alone, sleeping in the restaurant. Josh just turned 17. Someday, Josh hopes to finish university and be an artist. He dreams of being able to return to his village in Myanmar and running a school, to pass along the gift of education to those who currently do not have access to learning. Josh will be one of the first students enrolled in IDEAS Academy. The Teacher Neil Cairnie is currently volunteering with the development team. His 20-plus years of teaching experience help in evaluating resources, planning the structure of the program, discussing staffing ideas and problem-solving the issues of developing a functional school from the ground up. When the school opens this fall, he will teach math and sciences to the students. Mr. Cairnie’s passion for the project is evident. He stated, “I believe education is the key to addressing issues of poverty and creating a functional democracy. Education creates an aware populace and a just society. These kids don’t have access to this. IDEAS Academy will provide a space for anyone to learn.” The board’s vision of providing a top quality educational program inspired him to join the team. The Administrator Trine Engskov Paludan is the General Manager at IDEAS Academy. A volunteer at one of the many community schools providing an elementary education for refugee children, she was hired to turn the dream of the board into reality. Trine is currently working on securing the lease for the property to open the school, and coordinating efforts on everything from securing donations of school uniforms to filling the library with books. “We are striving for a high level educational experience for these kids. We also want it to be comprehensive, in that it will include arts, life skills, physical education, music, etc. Our aim is to give them the opportunity they don’t have now. Many will be resettled in other countries, and they won’t be prepared for what is coming, unless we prepare them.” Trine recently received a phone call from one of her former students who had been relocated to New Zealand. Biak was concerned. She was to begin high school the next day and worried that she wouldn’t fit in, she wouldn’t be smart enough, she

wouldn’t succeed. “But what could I tell her?” Trine asks. “I assured her that it would be okay. Everything would be fine if she worked hard. But that isn’t true. Biak wants to be a doctor someday, but she is too far behind. She is bright enough, but the opportunity has passed her by.” The School IDEAS Academy will officially open its doors in September 2014 with the mission to provide a high-quality and comprehensive education for 200 to 300 youth, at minimal cost to students’ families. It is a collaboration between (Stichting) Young Refugee Cause, a Dutch organization, which supports initiatives that provide education for young refugee, undocumented and underprivileged children around the world, and IDEAS, the Institute for Democracy and Economic Affairs, a top Malaysian think tank concerned with finding market-based solutions for public policy issues. You IDEAS Academy needs your help. To realize their goal of being a superior educational institution, they need volunteers and donations of time, money, books and in-kind donations. A regular commitment of only two hours a week, or a one-time commitment to lead a workshop during the school year will help them help these kids to make sure that no one, like Biak, is denied the opportunity to be everything that they aspire to be. Childhood obesity cannot be ignored….. We often make excuses for it by saying “why not let my child enjoy what he likes to eat?” , “when he grows older, the weight will come off”, “he’s just big-boned” or “it’s all muscle, not fat”. Often we also fall into the trap of rewarding our kids with food – chocolates, ice cream and trips to the favourite fast food joint, do make kids happy.. ..but are just poor choices in the long-term. As adults we ourselves often turn to food as a mood lifter! ..that wonderful feeling of joy after indulging in, for example chocolate (my favourite drug of choice!) after a hard day at work. But we must make sure that our children learn to make healthy food choices which they will then continue to make into adulthood. Some facts about childhood obesity: 1. Obesity is a global phenomenon. The CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) statistics show us that the number of obese children worldwide has tripled in the last 30 years. 2. About 25 million children are overweight. 3. 70% of obese adolescents are still obese when they become adults. 4. Obese kids have a higher risk of developing serious illnesses such as asthma and sleep apnea. 5. Obese adolescents have high risk factors for cardiovascular disease and stroke such as high cholesterol and high blood pressure. 6. There has been a significant increase in children developing Type2 Diabetes. In some countries, 20% of newly diagnosed type 2 Diabetics are young adults. 7. Obese adolescents have an increased risk of developing joint problems such as osteoarthritis. 8. There are also increasing evidence on the association of certain cancers and diets which are high in fats and low in fibre. 9. Obesity also affects children psychologically. Obese children are more likely to be bullied.

10. The costs of health care for obese kids are about 3 times more than for those that aren’t obese. Obesity is caused by a caloric imbalance – more calories are consumed than is utilized. We are fortunate to live in an age where food is plentiful for most of us. However we are also living in an age where many of day-today activities (at school or at work) and our forms of entertainment (watching TV, playing computer games) also are sedentary and we simply are not using many calories. The most common causes for childhood obesity are bad eating habits, too little exercise, an unhealthy family lifestyle and genetics. While we don’t want to have a generation of children who are also overly concerned about their weight. The ideal is for our kids to know how to make healthy choices on what to eat. They should be able to recognize when they are full and not to continue to eat or snack frequently. They should be encouraged to spend more time outdoors. If you are not sure if your child is obese, they can be examined by your paediatrician and their weight and height can be measured and their BMI (Body Mass Index) can be calculated. You can get information on healthy food options and portion sizes from books, the internet and of course from your doctor. A dietician will also be able give advice on age appropriate types and quantities of food. Ultimately, children learn by example and we have a responsibility to our children to eat healthily (and to not smoke and only drink alcohol in moderation or not at all) and participate in some form of physical activity such as walking or cycling.
