Did you know that in France, Italy, and Belgium, April Fools’ Day is April Fish Day? Pranksters tape paper fish on the victim’s back and shout “April fish!” (According to Wikipedia, which might be having an April Fools’ joke on me.) When I first moved to KL, I forgot to factor in the time difference while looking at Facebook, and promptly fell for my cousin’s prank. I was too embarrassed to tell my parents that her ultrasound hadn’t found a surprise third baby after all (though she was in fact expecting her second set of twins) when I realized she’d posted that status on April 1, not April 2.

No one celebrates April Fools’ with as much gusto as the Brits, judging by the number of British entries in the Museum of Hoaxes’ Top 100 April Fools jokes. Number one is the Swiss Spaghetti Harvest hoax of 1957, where a respected TV program announced that Swiss farmers were enjoying a bumper crop of spaghetti that year. The BBC was inundated with calls from viewers who wanted to know where they, too, might procure a spaghetti plant for their own gardens. The advent of the Internet has only added fuel to the joke fire, and the tradition of great April Fools’ pranks continues unabated. (One of the Museum’s top entries is the Flying Penguin hoax of 2008, again courtesy of the BBC.) So if you’re browsing the web or see a status update on Facebook and you can’t believe your eyes, double-check the date...or else the joke may be on you!

Hello Everyone! On March 21st our Coffee Morning was an occasion to distribute funds raised from the Christmas Bazaar to our charities. They were asked to please bring their brochures, information and goals to share with the membership. Last year there were 22 different charities. This year the number increased to 23 and there is a change in the recipients. Although not new to our organization, these six new recipients have not received any donations in a number of years. I hope all that attended were able to meet and perhaps find a connection with a charity you would personally like to assist. Unfortunately the photos weren’t ready at the time the magazine went to press. Next Month! Here are the recipients, and thank you for your participation!

Urinary Infection –
5 things you should know Hi Dr.Muhilan, I’m a sexually active 30 year old woman in a monogamous relationship, where we use condoms and spermicide. What’s bothering me is that I keep getting urinary tract infections, practically once a month. Every time I go into the health centre, they take a urine sample and a culture, but it doesn’t seem to work. Lately it feels like I am getting it every month! In spite of drinking a lot of cranberry juice, water and taking a lot of antibiotics, it keeps coming back. Is there anything else I can do to stop it? Regards J
Dr.Muhilan Parameswaran Consultant Urologist MBBS (India), FAGE (Manipal), MRCS (Edin), M.S (Malaya). Board Certified Urologist (M’sia), FRCS (Urology) (Glaslow),Fellow Laparascopic Surgery (India), Fellowship in Urology (Austria) Tropicana Medical Centre drmuhilanumsc@gmail.com
DOES THIS SOUND FAMILIAR? This is an actual complaint I got in the mail and it’s a fairly common question. Urine infections are so common that almost all of us get them at some point or the other. For some, it’s a recurring nightmare involving hours or days of discomfort and pain, countless courses of antibiotics, feelings of frustration, and being turned off in regards to intercourse or penetration. It’s annoying, irritating but can usually be managed. To help with this I have put together 5 FAQ’s that I believe may help. 1. Why do I get this infection? • Bacteria like E.Coli and Proteus gets into your urinary tract and cause a UTI. This happens when wiping your privates from back to front after a bowel movement. Germs can get into your urethra, which has its opening in front of the vagina. • Having sexual intercourse. Germs in the vagina can be pushed into the urethra. • Waiting too long to pass urine. When urine stays in the bladder for a long time, more germs are made, and worse it can become UTI. • Barrier contraceptives like a diaphragm or spermicides or lubricants • Things that can injure the bladder like stone or Bladder Cancer. • Having diabetes or other long term health problems. • Loss of estrogens and changes in the vagina after menopause. • Having had a catheter put into the bladder. 2. How do I know its UTI? • Usually by the symptoms, you may feel generally unwell, with a fever, a burning sensation when you pass urine and the urge to pass urine often usually in small amounts.

KL American April 2013
3. How are you going to find out and treat this? • A simple infection may require nothing more than a urine test with some antibiotics based on what germ I think you may have , however more than 2 infections in 6 months will require further testing to find out why it is happening and to make sure there is nothing more dangerous. 4. Will a UTI hurt my kidneys? • A simple UTI will not, but a recurrent one may lead to complications that can affect the kidney and damage it. A recurrent UTI may also be a sign of stone or cancer within the bladder. 5. I get UTIs a lot. Can you help me? • I would take a thorough look to find any preventable or dangerous causes. Then we can try some prevention like home base treatments or low dose antibiotic treatments.
