The holidays are here (hide)!

AmericanMagazine Team

I have a love-hate relationship with the holidays. I love the snow, the parties, seeing old friends, Christmas cards, the lights, the tree, Midnight Mass, giving gifts, and even all those corny movies I’ve watched again and again and again. But I hate the stress, the logistics of getting it all done before the big day, buying and decorating the tree, writing out all those cards, shopping for all those gifts, going to all those parties – eggnog, anyone? Then in a whirlwind it’s over. There’s a moment of peace, and before you know it, the next big question looms – what are we doing for New Year’s Eve?

This year’s holiday season got off to a great start with another successful AAM Annual Christmas Charity Bazaar. It was nice to see so many familiar faces busily hunting for treasure. I was especially thrilled to finally meet Stacy Rushton – that’s her in the picture with me! Stacy was once in my shoes as Editor of this magazine and she still serves as one of the proofreaders. I have been emailing her since I took over as Editor and it was nice to finally put a face to the name! If you missed the Bazaar, we have plenty of pictures included in this issue. You can also read about celebrating holidays in the tropics courtesy of Latisha Merican, or about developing a passion for motor sports by Jennifer Guthrie.

As I write this I am preparing for my own Thanksgiving trip back to the States. I’ll have a two-day layover in Tokyo where I plan to buy funky toys for the nieces and nephews in my bid to be the coolest aunt ever before heading to Seattle for Thanksgiving with the in-laws and the Apple Cup football game. The next stop is Cleveland to see my family, and then, finally, New York to visit some friends and colleagues, and to keep up some of our traditions like seeing the Rockefeller Center tree late at night after the tourist hordes have gone or seeing the beautiful Neapolitan crèche at the Met. Who knows, maybe there will be a party or two to go to before we head back to KL.

Membership HOHOHO – Merrie Christmas! Wow, in less than three weeks, I will be back in the US for the holidays. It is official. Panic is setting in as I look at everything that I have to do between now and the time I leave, to say nothing of when I get there! But, although it is a busy time of year, it is always full of fun family events and gatherings – making new memories and relishing the old ones.

Keep your resolutions... Happy New Year 2014! January’s Coffee Morning is all about New Year’s Resolutions and how to keep them! Join us for an informative talk about nutrition and fitness, followed by a lively discusion and light refreshments. Details are on page 10.

Before everyone succumbs to the holiday brouhaha, we hope that you will take a break and attend a very lovely Holiday High Tea at the amazing Majestic Hotel on 5 December. There will be a special holiday menu for us as we dress up in festive attire and raise our “pinkies” to wish each other the happiest of holidays. During the festivities, we will draw the winning raffle ticket for the custom quilt designed to your specifications and made by our AAM quilters. Take time in December to celebrate your family holidays, whether they be Christmas, Chanukah, Kwanzaa or anything else and welcome the new year with anticipation and commitment to make it the best ever. December will be a relatively quiet month, but we will start January with our first Coffee Morning of the new year on the 16th, which will give us information on how to keep that perpetual New Year’s Resolution – “I will eat better, I will exercise more, I will lose weight!”. Stay tuned for more details. Wishing you all the very best of holiday seasons and everything wonderful in 2014. Cheers,

Community Service Season’s Greetings! As Christmas approaches, it is so wonderful to realize how many blessings we have received, and how wonderful it is to be able to experience the riches that Malaysia and the rest of Asia have to offer. The Christmas Bazaar on 7 November was fantastic, wasn’t it? Claire and I want to thank Lovie and Mary for organizing such a wonderful event. Thanks also goes to Merrie Braden for helping with the Christmas ornaments for our Giving Tree! What an excellent turnout of charities we had! Twenty-one charities came and sold their products for their women, men, and children. RM29,677 was made by the charity groups! THANK YOU for being part of the solution for so many, and for realizing that a big part of AAM is our charitable giving back to our host country. Wow! One charity made enough for four women to set up businesses, freeing them from abuse. Additional funds were raised by our jambalaya, baked goods and white elephant sales, not to mention the entrance donations. Our quilting group has gotten in on the action too and is raffling off a quilt in December with the proceeds to benefit our charities. Thank you to them for their fundraising efforts! Maybe next year, our other activity groups will participate too! For those who were out of town and missed the event, I hope you will come to one of the AAM’s activities between now and Christmas to be a part of our community of giving. So what is AAM doing for Christmas? We have a GIVING TREE! There are three charities that we will sponsor this year - Lighthouse Children’s Home, Montfort Boys Home and Open Hands. All three have children and teens who would not receive presents this Christmas were it not for donations from associations like ours. To that end, we are selling ornaments, color coded to represent each charity, for only RM50 per ornament, or the equivalent to US$17. You may donate to your favorite of the three or all of them, depending on your desires. Below is a description of each charity. The Giving Tree will be in the Villa and there will be a traveling tree that will go to the High Tea at the Majestic Hotel. Ornaments will be for sale through 10 December. Claire and I will collect the donations and distribute them to each charity before Christmas so that the homes can purchase gifts for the kids. Claire and the Giving Tree at the Bazaar - Lighthouse Children’s Home: Lighthouse offers a home to disadvantaged boys and girls. They are located in KL, and serve children that range from two years through teens. This home is run by a couple who opened their home to disadvantaged, children and has been in operation since 2005. They serve over 40 children, and receive no governmental resources. - Montfort Boys Home: Montfort is in Shah Alam and serves 350 youths by providing residence, training and self development. They admit those who are orphaned, from poor single families, dysfunctional families and minority ethnic groups. - Open Hands: Open Hands is a home for displaced orphan children. Located just outside of KL, this home serves children ranging from ages 10-17, and at present, has approximately 16 girls. We have several members who currently volunteer at this home, and it is a new addition to our charities. As you prepare for Christmas, remember those who don’t have the abundance that we have . Thanks for all you do!

Digital Shoebox Two Peaceful Corners of Bangkok Text and Photos by Rissa Larsen Bangkok is an amazing city. On a recent trip we marveled at the modern architecture and efficient Sky Train transportation system that took us everywhere we needed to go, even back in time to see the Bangkok of renowned spiritual beauty and peace, where traffic jams, tourist kitsch and pricey malls are left behind. The wat complexes and museums should not be missed because they are magical and timeless. One can spend a day experiencing the detailed temples and giant reclining Buddha of Wat Pho or the immense Grand Palace and museums. But a traveler needs a break from the heat and crowds to process and restore the body and mind. Two options that do this exceptionally well are Suan Pakkad Museum and a longboat trip on the canals. Both offer the past and present perfectly balanced not to mention cool drinks and shady respites. Both are located in central Bangkok and are easily found in the guide books.

KL American Dec13 / Jan14

Digital Shoebox

Suan Pakkad Palace Museum is a complex of typical Thai houses and modern galleries which house the extensive art collection of a grandson of King Rama V. The prince and his wife believe that although the collection of artifacts is privately owned, it should be shared with mankind. You will not be disappointed by the early prehistory, the graceful traditional buildings in this garden setting or the collections of royal household crystal, porcelain and ceremonial masks. Listen to the birds in the shady palms as you sit on a veranda overlooking a lovely pond or relax in any number of comfortable places. We especially loved House 6, where we found the Khon masks. Both villains and heroes from traditional dance in their bright gold and ceramic glory are displayed. Imagine the moving miniature figures in spot lit dioramas depicting mock battles from the Ramayana, the holy text of Hindus and Thai Buddhists. Spend a morning on a long boat, easily hired at any stop on the Phraya River to explore canal life, the other more peaceful side of Bangkok. Enjoying the cool morning breezes with exotic flowering trees lining our way, we passed stilt houses, temples, schools of fish, modern villas and–– families waving from balconies, giving us a glimpse of another, slower way of life. A snoozing monitor lizard raised an unconcerned eye as we passed. You can buy a beer or soft drink from a passing canoe vendor or stop as we did and climb five steps to an art gallery/coffee shop where two funny sculptures both guard and welcome you inside to enjoy a Thai ice coffee, ice cream or snacks. Perspectives Two Kinds of Christmas Holidays Story and photos by Latisha Merican Coming from Malaysia, the only white Christmases I ever had the chance to experience were during my four-odd years at the University of Missouri – St Louis. Arriving in the fall, there were only about two months before it started to get really cold around Halloween. Nevertheless, this didn’t stop my friends and me from driving to Six Flags over Mid America to take advantage of the discounted tickets and shorter waiting times and to be scared out of our wits at the terrifying haunted house. The water rides could probably have frozen us in midair but it didn’t matter. We wanted to experience everything that was on offer! Back in St Louis, I would also pay a visit or two to the Ted Drewes Frozen Custard stand for my favorite butterscotch concrete before they closed for the winter. Around December the malls of an otherwise sleepy town would gradually rouse to life and start bustling with shoppers and the ringing of Santa’s bell. It was still nothing compared to the noisy and crowded malls back home so I pooh-poohed it. Until, that was, I decided to get something on Christmas Eve. To my absolute horror, the parking lot, that was easily the size of a small country, was full! About a week before Christmas, it would start to be freezing, but with no sign of snow. I found myself outside one day, looking up beseechingly and nature obliged by sending one snowflake. Just when I was about to lose hope that it would snow on either Christmas Eve or on the day itself blanketing everything in white, it snowed! The nights were magical, and there was a certain stillness in the air. It was really peaceful. During my first winter, a friend thought that it would be fun to go sliding down a slope. We didn’t know where to get a toboggan so we brought our laundry baskets and tumbled down the hill, plunging headfirst into the snow. We also tried ice skating at night on a frozen lake and had snowball fights. More interestingly, a fellow car nut and I drove our rear-wheel-drive cars to an empty parking lot and made skids and handbrake turns in the snow. In the later years, my American friend Laura invited me over to her apartment to watch classic movies, funnily enough starting with A Charlie Brown Christmas. Christmas in the tropics couldn’t be more different. Singapore, where I spent 11 years of my married life, was hot, or rainy, as it was in December. The first time 16

it rained for three days straight I remarked dryly to my husband about making an ark and getting into it before the whole island flooded over. Rainy or not, the malls start to get packed and noisy in November, reaching a frenzied pitch in December. One year I made the mistake of going to a mall a few days before the big day and discovered the mile-long queue for taxis, with no taxis in sight. To make it worse, I was pregnant! When we had children however, some mall visits couldn’t be avoided. To attract shoppers, one installed bubble machines which were a hit with the kids. Normally, I avoided crowded places like the plague, but we had three-year-old Shiraz who loved new sensory experiences so I urged my husband to carry him on his shoulders so he could see and touch the bubbles before they popped. I wanted to recapture Christmases past so we also tried Snow City, which has a slope you could slide down in a giant donut. However, the “snow” was just …different. It was a bit slimy. Our typical holiday activities were usually somewhat laidback and cheap and tended to revolve around our three small sons who loved the outdoors and anything that assaulted their senses. Because school was out for six whole weeks, if my husband Michael couldn’t take the day off from work, I would bring my three children, along with my helper, on day trips to local parks and attractions. We would pack a picnic and spend lazy days at Changi Beach, which would be blissfully deserted on the weekdays. My idea of a perfect day would be lounging on a beach reading a book and since my helper loved playing with my kids, I tried to indulge in this as often as I could. We would go to the Botanic Gardens for their café’s scrumptious western breakfast before taking a walk. We were at the Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve at the actual time the tsunami

Perspectives hit and I remember thinking that there was something odd about the water’s behavior. It was only when we got back home and turned on the TV that I realized what had happened. Rainy days would be either do-nothing days in which we vegetate in front of the TV to watch the specials, or more commonly, we would have a cooking activity. If there was no lightning, I would send the kids outside with their umbrellas and raincoats to enjoy the outdoor shower. This was also the ideal time to go shopping for the fantastic deals during the Great Singapore Sale. I tend to avoid Orchard Road, looking out instead for warehouse sales such as at Scholls, or the events held at the Singapore Expo. Borders and department stores like John Little and Robinsons are a few that I try not to miss. It would be packed on the weekends so I would plan to go on a Monday morning if possible, by myself, to stock up on essentials like nappy detergent, pajamas, chocolates, or peruse the offers on Christmas presents. If my in-laws were visiting, on Christmas day Michael and I would drive them to the Church of Our Lady of Perpetual Succour nearby for morning mass, then pick them up and bring them back home to enjoy the prawn noodles that I had slaved over. We would then exchange gifts and have a relaxing day, taking a drive to Orchard

Road at night to see the lights and decorations. I love the year-end holidays as it means that my kids are out of school and we get to spend time together. The end of Christmas is usually met with a bit of sadness as I realize that in just a little over a week, school will start and life will become chaotic again. New year resolutions, anyone?

Prawn Noodles for Christmas Story and photos by Latisha Merican When we were first married, every Christmas saw us traveling from Singapore, where we lived, to KL, to visit my husband Michael’s parents. I remember being very excited to be joining them for Christmas lunch the first time. Visions of turkey, something roasted, or at the very least, something Western, floated in my head, so I was taken aback when I discovered that my first Christmas lunch was to be prawn noodles. Prawn noodles? I furrowed my brow. “Well, sure,” said my husband. “We’re Malaysian, so we eat Malaysian food for Christmas.” Prawn noodles (har mee) is a Chinese soup traditionally made

Assembled and ready-to-eat Prawn Noodles

with pork bones, simmered for hours together with lots of ground prawn shells which have first been dry-fried to bring out the aroma. It is then seasoned with soy sauce and rock sugar and enjoyed with yellow noodles and vermicelli, steamed prawns, steamed shredded chicken and scalded kangkong and bean sprouts. You would start by loading the noodles and ingredients in a bowl, pour the soup, and sprinkle fried shallots on top. To give it a kick, ground chili that has been sauteed

with a bit of oil and shrimp paste is added. My mother-in-law had made the halal version, which uses chicken bones instead of pork. It is timeconsuming to make and, as you can imagine, could probably elevate your cholesterol level after just one meal. It is, however, one of Michael’s favorites, which is why I found myself, in the following years, slaving over prawn noodles for Christmas. KL American Dec13 / Jan14

Dear AAM members, Thank you to the members that joined us for the first ever Town Hall Meeting that took place in October!! It is said that dynamite comes in small packages and I think our meeting is more proof of that. Our numbers may have been small but big ideas came out of the meeting and this will be useful in the future growth of our Association! Rest assured that all ideas were heard and we will do our best to implement them. But bear in mind that no change happens overnight and never by one person’s hand. Please be patient as we work to bring about the changes that we can as quickly as we can. One of the best ways you, our members, can help is to volunteer where possible. Our AGM will be held in March and we will need volunteers to fill Board positions so that the ideas brought forward at the Town Hall Meeting can grow from thought to action. If a Board position is not in your plans then consider being a committee member. It takes more than one villager to build a village. Here’s to a bright future ahead!! Before I met my husband my knowledge of professional racing did not extend past NASCAR save for a speckling of Formula 1. I was aware there were some crazy men that raced on two wheels but I had no idea what the fascination was. Then Patric came along and introduced me to MotoGP. The rest is, as they say, history! We have been fortunate enough to find ourselves living in a country that is home to one of the favorite race tracks of the MotoGP racers. Last year we ventured out to our first live race at the Sepang International Circuit and fell in love with MotoGP all over again. If you have not been to a live motorcycle race and you find yourself living here I cannot stress enough how much you are missing out!! This year we repeated the Sepang trip and added a trip Down Under to the track at Phillip Island near Melbourne, Australia. The track is absolutely amazing which adds a whole other dimension to the racing! We were even treated to a special day in the VIP section which included paddock passes – a reminder that the unexpected can happen! What made this extra special was meeting a well-known rider that just happens to be from HOUSTON, TEXAS…yes, you read that correctly! He is the #5, Colin Edwards, also known as the Texas Tornado! There is also another well-known American racer – the #69, Nicky Hayden, also known as the Kentucky Kid. I hope you enjoy these photos as much as we enjoyed the experiences behind getting them!!

n i y t i l i t r e f n I f o s e Caus Women

Dr. Aldrin Lie Tze Min BSc. (UKM), MD (UKM), M. MED O & G (Malaya) Consultant Obstetrician & Gynaecologist, Fertility Specialist Tropicana Medical Centre

Fertility is an emerging problem in both developing and developed countries. It is postulated that as many as 1 in 6 couples suffer from some degree of infertility. This is a considerably high ratio compared with the distant past.

• In women, hyperprolactinaemia leads to menstrual dysfunction. • In men, hyperprolactinaemia has a direct, reversible effect on the hypothalamus, causing reduced libido and erectile dysfunction.

Human reproduction is a complex process mixed with the right combination of factors and a stroke of luck. In order for pregnancy to happen, all the processes which include presence of sperms when the mature egg is released from the ovary during ovulation, the fertilization of the egg by the sperm and successful implantation of the resulting fertilized egg (embryo) on the inner lining of the womb must happen at the right time.

The normal function of the ovary could be disrupted by premature ovarian failure, which is a rare and unexplainable condition. Premature ovarian failure occurs when the ovaries stop working before age 40. You may have no eggs or only a few eggs. Depending on the cause, premature ovarian failure may develop as early as the teen years, or the problem may have been present from birth.

Any alteration or disruption can lead to a decline in the ability to conceive. There are a number of factors that can disrupt a woman’s reproductive process. Infertility can be caused by one or a combination of these factors. Following are explanations on some contributing factors. Ovarian Causes Problems with ovulation are the most common causes accounting for 25% to 30% of female infertility. During a normal ovulation cycle during a woman’s reproductive years, a woman’s ovary will release a normal and ripe egg or ovium. Anovulation is a condition in which the ovary does not release a ripened egg each month. Naturally, with no egg available for sperm, a woman cannot become pregnant. In almost half of the cases of anovulation, the ovaries do not produce normal mature eggs. Ovulation usually does not happen if the eggs are immature thus rendering the chances of fertilization remote. This can occur when there is a condition that leads to an imbalance of the hormones responsible for ovulation. One of the commonest is Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS).

PCOS is a condition that is classically characterized by irregular scanty (very light) periods, persistent weight gain and infertility. In more severe cases, women with PCOS may have excessive body hair growth. Besides causing infertility, untreated PCOS may lead to higher risk of womb cancer, heart disease and hypertension. Other less common hormonal causes of ovulatory disturbances could be caused by physical injury or by the presence of a tumour in or near the brain. These rarer hormonal disturbances include malfunction of the hypothalamus (the part of the brain that regulates the hormone responsible for stimulation of the ovaries to produce eggs as well as ensuring that the mature eggs are released) and malfunction of the pituitary gland (the organ that produces these hormones). Another hormonal cause called hyperprolactinaemia is a condition characterized by elevated levels of prolactin (the hormone that is responsible for the production of breast milk which can inhibit ovulation). Note that prolactin levels are normally high during pregnancy and lactation, and also in severe stress. The effects of raised prolactin are:

A woman who has premature ovarian failure is very likely to have irregular or no periods, infertility problems, and menopause-like symptoms. Some studies have suggested a genetic link. An even rarer condition is the congenital absence of the ovaries. This means that the woman is naturally born without any ovaries as part of her reproductive system Dysfunction or obstruction of the fallopian tubes The fallopian tube is the place in which fertilization occurs during natural conception. A poorly functioning tube or an obstructed tube will hamper the possibility of the sperm being able to reach the egg, thus reducing the chances of fertilization. Infections, which are usually transmitted sexually, can lead to inflammation of the tubes resulting in the scarring and damage of the fallopian tubes. In severe cases, the tubes may be swollen as a result of fluid collecting in the obstructed ends of the tubes. Previous surgeries on the tubes during cases such as ectopic pregnancies could also damage and cause inflammation and scarring to the tubes. Adhesions of the tube to the surrounding organs following previous pelvic or abdominal surgery may further reduce it’s mobility. Abnormal Womb These include presence of fibroids which involves the inner lining of the womb as well as polyps. Congenital abnormalities which lead to abnormality of the shape of the womb are rare. Endometriosis Endometriosis is a common cause of infertility throughout the world. It is characterized by the presence of the cells in the inner lining of the womb in other parts of the body, mainly in the ovaries, tubes and the pelvic cavity. This leads to inflammation which may cause infertility as a result of excessive damage and scarring to the ovaries as well as tubal obstruction. Other contributing factors Apart from biological factors, infertility is also influenced by lifestyle factors such as diet, exercise, smoking, alcohol intake and substance abuse which have a direct as well as indirect influence on ovulation.
