President’s Message Happy 2015 and Gong Xi Fa Cai! It’s hard to believe another year is upon us. Where did the time go? The AAM has been super busy behind the scenes over this holiday season, and we have now officially moved to the Troika. It, of course, took longer than anticipated because we had to downsize and get rid of many things that had been accumulating over the years. I hope you all were able to come to our Open House. Many Board members, as well as some super members, have been helping to put things in order through Ikea trips, handyman referrals, and helping to purchase new décor as well as to repurpose old items. Thank you all for your patience as we get things in order and work out the kinks of being in a new location. We hope you agree that this year will be a great one with a new location, new events and activities, as well as some old favorites : (“if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it”). Next month is our AGM and, like last year, we will do a potluck lunch afterwards. We really hope that you can either join us in person or send us your proxy vote. We look forward to sharing many new memories with you and always enjoy and welcome your feedback. If you have any questions/ideas/concerns please do not hesitate to email me at president. aam@gmail.com (or any other Director of your choosing).

Another year is upon us – the Year of the Sheep! The Chinese consider sheep auspicious animals. They do not have to do the farm work; instead they have the freedom to look around for any kind of grass without worry of running out. As I mark my third year of living in Malaysia, having landed here during Chinese New Year 2012, I am inspired by the sheep and make my Chinese New Year’s Resolution to adopt the attitude of the sheep — to look around for new experiences without worry. As we all know, expatriate life is full of uncertainties, and this may be my last Chinese New Year in KL. Or not. But like the sheep, or perhaps it was Alfred E. Newman, I say “What? Me worry?” and graze on.

Many of you are just now returning from your holiday travels and visiting the new AAM Villa @ Troika for the first time. I hope you love our new home as much as we do and will visit us often. Even though it’s the shortest month, we’ve managed to pack in a full slate of activities for you, including our regular weekly activities of Mahjong, Stitching Friends and Bahasa classes. We start the month with a bus tour to the Batu Caves to witness the eve of Thaipusam on the 2nd followed by First Fridays on the 6th and Bingo with the Little Sisters of the Poor on the 10th. We’ll be ushering in the Year of the Sheep a bit early with a Chinese New Year themed Lunch Bunch on the 11th, and we will spread the love and disburse the monies raised in 2014 to AAM’s supported charities at the Coffee Morning on the 12th. If you are looking for a stimulating activity, the Book Club meets on the 17th and there is a Malaysian cooking class on the 24th. Last but not least, we cap off a busy month on the 28th with a Saturday Night Out.

Membership Happy New Year! If you are like me, you can’t believe it’s 2015! The holidays were a whirlwind and then came the New Year. Now we are a month into the new year and hopefully our resolutions are still in place. We have made big changes at the AAM. As you know we have moved our office to the Troika. We have also decided to try a different approach to First Fridays. Starting March 6th we will be having our first First Fridays at the Troika. We will be serving coffee and tea and will offer a few nibbles. This is a new undertaking and we intend that any proceeds from our First Fridays will go to one of the many charities the AAM supports. I am looking for volunteers who can get involved and make First Fridays a gathering where our members, old and new, can meet up and get to know each other. First Fridays will still be at the same time, just a new place! Please email me if you are interested in getting involved with our First Fridays team. I look forward to making 2015 a great year as well as a great start for our new home at the Troika.

Community Service In this life we cannot do great things. We can only do small things with great love. - Mother Teresa The loved-filled month of February has arrived. And even though it’s the shortest month, February has lots of holidays to love. If you love our founding fathers (and to shop), there’s Presidents Day, and if you love football, there’s the Super Bowl and if you love history, there’s Black History Month. And if you love to do it all again, there’s Ground Hog Day. At the AAM’s new and posh location in The Troika, we will be sharing the love and everyone’s efforts from the 28th Annual Christmas Bazaar. On February 12th at 10:00am, in honor of St. Valentine’s Day, the AAM will be hosting its Annual Charity Check Presentation Coffee Morning. A select group of top charities will be on hand to receive their donations from the AAM. Please come and join us to meet some of the folks and organizations that you help to support while giving them the opportunity to thank you in person. In addition to the money raised at the Bazaar, the AAM helped to buy gifts for children through the sale of Christmas ornaments from the Giving Tree. The much-appreciated gifts were most welcome, especially with the start of the school year so close to the holidays. Thank you for your purchases. We are gathering ideas on how to expand the AAM Giving Tree project. I know some people have already shared their thoughts and recommendations. Feel free to keep the conversation going. And on that note, the AAM and its Board are looking for ways to make our organization successful and ways to improve what it is we do. Success requires participation and contributions. And everyone has something to contribute; big or small and not only the monetary type (though that type doesn’t hurt!). The AAM welcomes volunteers, and is open to suggestions, recommendations and feedback – all of which are taken into consideration. Again, thank you. Enjoy the photos!

What’s On in . . . February / March Book for February and March: Wild Swans: Three Daughters of China

Tuesday, 17 February, 11:00 a.m. Ambiance Coffee Café Ambiance Ampang, 379A 4 Jalan Ampang, First Floor (near Ampang Grocers) Cost: Individual

AAM Book Club LAST MONTH AT THIS LOCATION! Please join us for the AAM’s most stimulating monthly activity, the AAM Book Club, which meets the third Tuesday of every month at Ambiance Coffee Café. Our next book is Wild Swans: Three Daughters of China by Jung Chang (538 pages). Because the chosen book is large, we will be discussing it at both the February and March meetings. On 17 February we will discuss what we’ve read so far, but there is no pressure to have completed it by then. We will continue to read it up until our March get together when we will discuss the book’s ending. Happy reading everyone! Book Synopsis (reprinted from Amazon): In Wild Swans Jung Chang recounts the evocative, unsettling, and insistently gripping story of how three generations of women in her family fared in the political maelstrom of China during the 20th century. Chang’s grandmother was a warlord’s concubine. Her gently raised mother struggled with hardships in the early days of Mao’s revolution and rose, like her husband, to a prominent position in the Communist Party before being denounced during the Cultural Revolution. Chang herself marched, worked, and breathed for Mao until doubt crept in over the excesses of his policies and purges. Born just a few decades apart, their lives overlap with the end of the warlords’ regime and overthrow of the Japanese occupation, violent struggles between the Kuomintang and the Communists to carve up China, and, most poignant for the author, the vicious cycle of purges orchestrated by Chairman Mao that discredited and crushed millions of people, including her parents. RSVP: Appreciated but not necessary. E-mail klamerican.info@gmail.com.

LaZat Malaysian Home Cooking Class

Grab a few friends and join us at the LaZat Malaysian Home Cooking Class. Nestled in the jungle just outside Kuala Lumpur and overlooking the lush Penchala Hills, LaZat’s hands-on classes are presented in English by entertaining Malaysian instructors. Each student will individually prepare her own three-course lunch of Malay classics at their own cooking station, consisting of an appetizer, main course, side dish and dessert. Once cooking has finished, the fun continues when students have the opportunity to sit down and enjoy the fruits of their labor as the group gathers for lunch and lively conversation. This class is a really fun way to spend the day. Price includes transportation to and from the KLCC area as well as everything you need for a memorable day. The chosen menu can be tailored to meet the needs of those that are vegetarians, gluten free, lactose intolerant, etc. Please indicate ANY dietary needs to the AAM office when you sign up so the school can be notified in advance of our arrival. Smiling, frowning, squinting, and even chewing – basically any facial movement – can eventually lead to one of the most common signs of aging: wrinkles. They can make you appear tired or even angry when you are not. One of the quickest and safest remedies to remove wrinkles is an injection of botulinum toxin type A. Botulinum toxin can be combined with other cosmetic surgical procedures – such as face lift, neck lift or non surgical skin procedures – such as fillers, – to further improve your results. This combination of therapies can even help to prevent the formation of new lines and wrinkles. Injections of botulinum toxin may seem like a simple procedure to you, since it’s just a few shots. But it’s actually both an art and science that only an experienced healthcare professional should do. There are 43 muscles in your face and it’s vital that the person who performs botulinum toxin injections understands and pinpoints the correct spots to optimize your treatment.

Fillers can be very helpful in those with early signs of aging, or as a value-added part of facial rejuvenation surgery. What fillers won’t do: For some patients, surgery such as a facelift, brow lift, or eye lift may be the best approach. Non-surgical rejuvenation treatments, such as soft tissue fillers, cannot achieve the same results, but may help delay the time when consideration of a facelift becomes appropriate. If you want to reduce facial wrinkles and lines, hyaluronic acid may be a good choice as a filler because of its compatibility with the human body. In fact, this substance is found in almost every single living thing. In humans, it acts as a network that transfers essential nutrients from the bloodstream to skin cells. Hyaluronic acid is a natural substance found in your body. High concentrations are found in soft connective tissues and in the fluid surrounding your eyes. It’s also in some cartilage and joint fluids, as well as skin tissue. It is extracted and reformulated and now has become one of the most popular kinds of injectable fillers. If the term sounds familiar, it’s because the same substance is often injected into the aching joints of people with arthritis to ease pain and provide extra cushioning. Hyaluronic acid is not derived from animal sources.

Perspectives Happy New Year! Story and photos by Latisha Merican I started to join in the Chinese New Year festivities when I married Michael 13 years ago. A couple of weeks before the beginning of the holiday, I would begin scouting around for cheong sams for my children. I didn’t need to get one as I could, on most years, still manage to get into my wedding chi pao. Looks like this year, though, I will be wearing my standby, albeit still beautiful, chi pao top paired with a black skirt. Michael, the one who actually has Chinese blood, and who is the reason we celebrate, doesn’t own even one traditional costume. He thinks that the Chinese outfit looks like pajamas and so would eschew that in favor of his usual red Western shirt and black pants. Getting oranges is a priority, of course; however, it wouldn’t do to get them too early as they could go bad. On the other hand, leaving it too late could result in no oranges, which is a big nono. I face this dilemma every year and in the early days thought that this was the stuff of nightmares. So far though, we have been quite lucky, as the oranges I chose were not only sweet, but lasted. Apart from the oranges and clothes, I also get gifts for the inlaws, bags to put them in, and special ang pao packets. Then, I traipse to the bank to get new bills. On the eve, after my husband has oohed and aahed at my purchases, we pack the bags and stuff the money packets, and he gets ready to go pick up his parents from Puchong for dinner. My husband has taught me the importance of this reunion dinner, an event in which all adult children are expected to make it to their parents’ home. Thus, except for the two years when I was heavily pregnant and my OB/GYN advised me not to travel from Singapore (and the airline would probably refuse to take us anyway) we have been going back to my in-laws’. My mother-inlaw is a great cook and would have been slaving away, making different kinds of dishes for the different palates. I can appreciate the fact that she tries to accommodate her Malay daughter-inlaw, her Indian son-in-law, as well as her grandchildren who have varying tastes and fussiness. However, for the last few years we have been going to the restaurant at the Sime Darby Convention Center where everyone is treated to a Chinese dinner. A table

would have been booked two months in advance in order to take advantage of the huge discounts on offer, as well as to ensure that we actually got a table, as the popular eateries tend to be fully booked two weeks before the dinner date. As always, dinner starts with the tossing of the yee sang, with my mother-in-law wishing all of us prosperity and wealth. She urges us to toss it higher to symbolize long life, and my young kids are happy to oblige, as this is the only time they are allowed to throw food. We will then enjoy about ten various dishes, each featuring a main ingredient such as fish, shrimp, chicken, soup, vegetables or rice, and finally the dessert, and the latest fad – fortune cookies. Chinese New Year morning is spent at my in-laws’ home before making our rounds to my husband’s relatives in birth order, and then his friends, bearing our gifts and wishing everyone a good year. And even though my parents don’t celebrate, because we are a multicultural family and we strive to teach our children values, we also fit in a visit to my parents to wish them well and to give them their set of goodies. May we live a long, healthy and prosperous life!

Diversions Cooking Schools in KL Story by Karen Stiegler Maybe you’ve made a resolution to eat healthier this year and do more home cooking for yourself and friends...could I perhaps interest you in a cooking class? I have been checking out the scene in KL for classes since I arrived here a year and half ago. Cooking classes are popular for travelers who want to experience a bit more of a country’s culture, and perhaps take a little culinary technique home so they can recreate meals they have enjoyed. One of the first places to do this was Thailand, especially in Chiang Mai, where there are some excellent cooking schools. But over the past 10 plus years I have noticed that many destinations in Asia are doing the same — Vietnam, Cambodia, Bali, and also Malaysia! I have listed some options for KL below, but don’t forget to check your guidebooks when you travel to Penang, Malacca or over to Borneo where there also opportunities for cooking classes. LaZat Here in KL we are catching up to other destinations, and there are several cooking schools to choose from. The place that seems to be on every list is called LaZat (which means delicious). The school is located in an open air kampong-style Malay house in the Penchala Hills east of Kuala Lumpur and Mon’t Kiara. Getting there can be a bit of a hike, depending on where you live, but the school can provide transport from KLCC if you need it, so don’t let that be a deterrent. Participants will include tourists and visitors, as well as expats, and this is a great place to go if you want to learn Malaysian dishes like rendang and roti jala. I have not yet attended classes here myself, but I have heard good things about the school from others who have gone, and it is recommended by the Lonely Planet Malaysia guidebook. The school is also a great place to take your own visiting family and friends who want to get out of city center without going too far, and soak up not only the culture, but experience the food — not just at a hawker stall but cooked by you. LaZat specializes in Malaysian home cooking drawing from Malay, Chinese, Indian and Baba-Nonya flavors, and has six set menus to choose from, depending on which day of the week you attend. Take a look at their website to see their list of dishes and which program interests you the most. The hands-on classes are held Monday to Saturday, starting at 8:30 a.m. and finish by 2 p.m. The lesson starts with a visit to a local market to buy fresh ingredients for the day’s class. Then students return to the villa and make a four-course lunch with appetizer, main course, side and dessert at their own cooking station.

day of the week, their monthly schedule offers a lot to pick from, including sweet and savory options. Local Malaysian, Japanese and Thai are just some of the regional cuisines you may learn; fish, meat and vegetarian offerings as well. Baking classes are extensive and offer seasonal and French specialties like macarons, American Red Velvet Cake and cheesecake. There are also special holiday classes for Valentine’s Day, Chinese New Year and others. The Professional Knife Handling course looks like a gem that is not to be missed if you are a beginning or intermediate cook. Classes run everyday of the week except Mondays, with both morning and afternoon sessions, with most classes two to two and half hours long. Some of the well known expat groups in town have also sponsored group classes at Starhill Culinary Studio. Prices start at RM158 per person, and increase depending on the cost of ingredients, with classes teaching chocolate, foie gras or lobster being the most expensive. Classes include a demonstration by the chef followed by hands-on cooking. Participants receive a goodie bag with a chef’s hat, apron, recipes and notebook, and of course, the opportunity to enjoy their dishes with fellow students at the end of class. Nathalie’s Gourmet Studio If you are not so interested in local cuisines, but just want to sharpen your cooking skills in general, you cannot go wrong with French instruction and methods. Nathalie’s restaurants are among the top places to go in KL for French food, with two restaurants in town, one downtown near the KLCC area, which opened in 2011, and the other at Publika Mall, which opened in 2010. Nathalie’s also offers hands-on cooking classes for those wanting to learn how to make macarons, French bread, puff pastry, choux pastry and other French delights, and she has recently added a Thai cooking class to her current schedule. Nathalie Arbefeuille is a self-taught chef and has been serving up French cuisine in KL for more than seven years now. She has also cooked in Bangkok and her native France. She was voted Outstanding Chef of the Year at the Time Out KL Food Awards 2011 and Cuisine Gourmet by Nathalie was shortlisted for the Best New Restaurant Award. Most classes start at 9:30 a.m. and last for four hours or longer, so be ready for a thorough lesson! Prices range from RM200 to RM250 per person with most classes limited to 12 people. I have not met anyone who has personally taken a course, nor have I seen the teaching kitchen, but Nathalie has a good reputation with French people and other foodies I’ve met in KL.

Classes are approximately RM250 per person, and the school is also listed on tripadvisor.com if you want to read comments from former students.

Ben’s Independent Grocer Most of us have visited this top grocery store located at Publika Mall, especially if we are looking for a hard to find or specialized ingredient. In the very back of the store you will find Masak, where classes are offered in an open kitchen. A monthly schedule is posted on the supermarket’s website and copies are also available at the store, although classes are not organized more than a month or two in advance. Classes are hands-on, with cooking stations shared by two students at a time and no more than 10 students per class.

Starhill Culinary Studio This is a cooking school in central KLCC that offers a very different alternative: modern, spacious and state of the art! The Starhill Culinary Studio is a gleaming gem of glass and stainless steel perched atop the Starhill Gallery Mall, just adjacent to the Ritz Carlton and Marriott Hotels, across from the Pavilion KL mall. I have admired their glam cooking stations and rows of Kitchen Aid mixers, and they even have a special wine bar/tasting classroom. Classes are conducted by chefs from the many restaurants below in Feast Village and YTL Hotel kitchens at Starhill Gallery (a lovely place to have an upscale meal in KL). With classes almost every

Students seem to be a mix of Malaysians and a few expats here and there. I would say classes are more the fun and entertaining type, rather than focusing on technique. Classes range from three course meals to Chinese and Malaysian specialties, and also include baking and pastry courses. Chef instructors change month to month with several in-house chefs from the corporate owner, the BIG Group. Prices start at RM150 per person for a three or so hour class, depending on the subject. One quirky aspect is that shoppers from the store can wander right by or up to the students and watch what they are doing, and the environment can be a bit noisy with passersby.

Diversions The Rest... There are a few baking supply shops in KL that you may have heard of, including Bagus and House of Ingredients. These stores offer a good but basic selection of baking equipment, supplies, and to a lesser extent, ingredients. Their courses offer what is most popular with Malaysians and you would surely be amongst the locals for a class. I have seen some of their classrooms and lists of courses, and they seem to be basic level, but are reasonably priced for the amount of time offered. Ingredients used are those locally accessible versus more expensive. Locations are varied all over KL, so it is best to go to their website and find the location closest to you, then to visit the store to get a schedule and also do a little shopping! (They have great boxes, containers, pans and cake decoration supplies.) Bagus has not only baking classes, but cake decorating. The nearest shop to KLCC is in Melawati, but a bigger and better location is at Sungai Besi south of KLCC. If you are especially interested in cake decorating, there is the International Centre for Cake Artistry, which offers Wilton Method certified classes at several levels. Unfortunately, they have closed most of the locations they once had around town and now only offer classes at their shop in Kota Damansara, Petaling Jaya, past Ikea. There are many other schools and cooking classes in town, but checking their websites and contacting them by e-mail did not uncover much useful information. There are also a number of professional schools, primarily offering a French curriculum, especially for pastry, that I did not include. Let me know if you have any other recommendations, or attend and enjoy any good classes! Karen holds a Diplôme from Le Cordon Bleu Paris and has more than 15 years experience teaching in the U.S. and abroad. Most recently she taught for Williams-Sonoma, the Smithsonian Institution, L’Academie de Cuisine in Washington, DC, and Les Dames D’Escoffier, and, of course, she frequently holds classes at the AAM! KL Konfidential: Bag Snatching Story by Debz Rafferty

Let’s start by saying bag snatchers are not just Konfined to KL. Only last year a celebrity lost her bag to a scooterist when she was sitting in the back of a Paris taxi with her bag on her knee. The car window was broken and her bag disapeared in gloved hands, never to be seen again. As a security advisor, I always look at these reports and think “had her bag been at her feet and out of sight, this would never have happened.” When it comes to bag snatchers, backpack pickers and muggers, the only safe thing to do is avoid a situation that makes you a target, so here are a few points to consider before you step out into the city – whatever city that is. 1.

How do you carry your bag? When walking down the road, the bag should be on the side away from the road and where possible, you should walk towards the traffic to prevent being blindsided. I had previously said “always wear your bag across your body so it is difficult to grab.” That was until a friend was dragged down the street, unable to detach from the bag, until the handle finally broke. Luckily not much was lost and she walked away with only cuts and bruises. Now we teach the Frozen technique…LET IT GO, LET IT GO!

2.

Have you got your head in your phone? OK, so we mean eyes on the phone, but it may as well be your whole head. I mean how is it possible that your communication is so important it cannot wait till you have sat down or are in a secure place? By walking down the street, or standing at a crossing or in an elevator with your attention on your phone you may as well display a big sign that says MUG ME NOW! I DON’T HAVE A CLUE WHAT IS GOING ON AROUND ME! Not to mention you look kind of dumb when you walk into a lamp post! You may also consider how beautiful KL is, people pay a lot of money to come on holiday, maybe look up sometimes and enjoy the view, or even look your friends in the face and have a conversation that does not include the great interweb!

3.

In large malls like KLCC, these muggers work in groups. The guy on the inside will size you up as an easy target and “phone a friend” who will wait at your chosen exit and relieve you of the 1000 Ringitt you just took out from the ATM or the GUCCI bag that you have in an even larger bag that says in neon lights “This is worth a lot of money!” So be aware of who may be watching you. A quick look over your shoulder may save you a lot of heartache.

4.

When you enter a parking area, have your parking ticket and car keys in your hand ready to go, so you are not focusing your attention at the bottom of a Mary Poppins bag that seems to eat tickets. Get in your car as quickly as possible and lock your doors. If you see something attached to your rear windscreen as you are reversing out, DO NOT get out to have a look. This is a well know distraction. If you stop and get out, you may lose your car as well as your shopping. Also always place your handbag, or backpack on the floor - not on the seat next to you. A visible bag is a visible target.

5.

Never hail a taxi from the street. Many taxis are not licensed, and violence has been known to break out when drivers have refused to use the meter. Not to mention your kids are getting into a car with an unknown, untraceable man. Lone women and teens are especially vunerable to attack from unlicensed teksi drivers. There are many smart phone apps that can significantly reduce the risk of attack, such as MyTeksi, Uber, or Easy Taxi. The drivers are registered, often with their photographs displayed. The vehicles are registered and visible online by GPS. A follow-up email on “How was your teksi?” means that if you do encounter an issue then there is traceability and easy feedback.

6.

Listen to your inner voice. “Is that shortcut really the best thing to do?” or “If my mom could see me now, she would kill me!” are survival messages. Listen to them.

7.

Finally, if you are cornered and they want your bag or your wallet; GIVE IT TO THEM! Nothing in your backpack, bag or wallet is worth the damage they may do to you if you don’t. Then, brush yourself off and learn from the experience, but do not take it personally. They don’t know you, they don’t know your family. To them, you are just a meal ticket, a free lunch, that once eaten is forgotten about, just like your last trip to McDonalds!

In conclusion, the only defense we have against muggers is to be more aware of our surroundings, and in being more aware we become a harder target, so hopefully the guy is going to get his lunch somewhere else. For a person-centered target hardening course, please contact our offices and we will include you in our next event. KL American February 2015
