BAYFashion March 2011

Welcome to the 6th issue of BAYFashion Magazine! This is our Fall & Colors issue so you will see a lot of colors, a lot of fashion and of course a lot of amazing women from the San Francisco Bay Area. In this issue we have tried to keep the content very specific to what we believe in, its focused towards showcasing designers and models and covering the most happening shows in town. BAYFashion has come a long way and this is the first time we are putting out 2 issues in subsequent months. Forgive the errors and limitations, BAYFashion is a labor of love by our team and we do the best we can with all the other things (like Life) tugging on our coattails while we try to put this magazine together. Also, we need volunteers, we need like minded individuals who have ideas for the magazine to come forward. We need volunteer writers, we need excellent photographers, we need models, we need makeup artists, we need hair people... We need your love and all we promise is a classy magazine in return. The San Francisco fashion circle deserves a magazine which is about them, from within them and grows with them. A magazine that showcases them while they water its roots. We are a social magazine so we need you to help us grow and be better.

Shankha

Thanks and enjoy the issue.

DESIGNER PROFILE

BAYFashion March 2011

Vasily Vein is a famous Russian fashion designer, who recently moved to the San Francisco Bay Area. Vasily rose to fame in the late 1990’s and worked with many Russian celebrities. These celebrities include Linda, “VIA Slivki” and of course the infamous Russian group “t.A.T.u.”. Vasily’s modern silhouettes and designs literally caught my eye a few months back and I have been in love with his work ever since. Incredibly I had a chance to talk with Vasily about his work and learned about the inspirations and experiences that has put him on the path to becoming one of best fashion designers in the Bay Area.

8

BAYFashion March 2011

M: Vasily, how long have you been designing clothes? When did you start? V: I became interested in fashion design at a very young age. By the time I was 10, I was constantly experimenting with cloth and became the envy of my friends. At the age of 16 I was actively sewing wedding dresses for my girlfriends and became the designer of choice for my younger sister. M: What qualities should a fashion designer possess? V: First of all, a designer needs talent, particularly the talent to sew. Most importantly, a designer needs to be innovative and must have the capability to constantly develop new designs. Without innovation, designers cannot progress in the fashion industry. M: Vasily, what is the main source for your inspiration? V: My fashion inspirations stem from my love for music. My favorite artists are Johann Sebastian Bach, Bjork, and Depeche Mode.

M: Is there a particular group of people you specifically aim to please when creating your designs? Tell us about the typical women who buys your outfits. V: Well, there is no particular group of people I aim to please. My goal is to please everybody! As an artist I strive to create outfits that are both unique and creative matching the interests of any buyer. While I was in Russia, I sewed outfits for pop star Linda, but at the same time worked on conservative and elegant evening dresses. The woman who wears my outfits is not bounded by age, she can be anyone.

M: What do you think will contribute to expanding the San Francisco fashion scene? V: I think the San Francisco fashion scene can use more professionals. There are far too many individuals who claim to be designers and lack the professionalism needed for such a title. M: Do you participate in local fashion shows and events? Where would one find your outfits? V: I participate in a variety of fashion shows and events happening around the Bay Area. My new clothing line will be presented on the 30th of April in the British Bankers Club located at 1090 El Camino Real, Menlo Park CA 94025. I hope all of you can attend! M: Where do you see your professional career going in the next 10 years? V: I am very optimistic regarding my professional future. I am hoping to become the leading fashion designer in the Bay Area.

BAYFashion March 2011

M: What is your life’s goal? V: My aim is to prove to the world that women regardless of age are beautiful. I look forward to fulfilling that goal by continuously designing dresses that outline those features about women that all men love so much! Thank You so much for talking to BAYFashion Magazine. Friends don’t forget to cross your fingers and hope for a successful fashion show with a truly growing brand!

BAYFashion March 2011

Would you ever guess that a high-fashion dressmaker would absolutely despise sewing? Probably not, but such is the case with the Bay Area’s InLush creator and designer, Biviana Lazo. Bivi calls her line of clothing “Wearable Art Fashion,” because each piece of clothing is a unique hand-made work of art. The colors are bold, bright, electric and metallic. The patterns are sharp and splashy. It’s easy to imagine the painted fabric of one of her dresses stretched across a canvas, framed, and hung on a wall. But Bivi’s frame of choice is the human body, and it would be simply impossible for someone to be a wallflower when wearing such an original piece of art.

17

BAYFashion March 2011

When Bivi tried to explain her style of painting and choice of colors to me she guessed that perhaps it reflected her positive and bright outlook on life. “I don’t really find something that is black or white exciting. I always use three or four colors, maybe more.” Her Peruvian cultural roots may also influence her love for color. I asked Bivi the obvious question; What came first, fashion or art? The answer surprised me. “I spent a lot of my early years sewing dresses for barbies, which I would sell to classmates and friends, and coloring and painting books.” Bivi learned to sew at the age of seven, and in her early twenties she decided to study fashion. While in fashion school, she realized that she didn’t actually enjoy anything about sewing, and that she didn’t want to spend the rest of her life doing something that she was not passionate about. She switched gears and began pursuing art.

18

BAYFashion March 2011

While Bivi painted she distanced herself from sewing, but she found herself deeply missing something. Despite her distaste for the needle and thread, she had a passion for fashion. Then Bivi learned about painting on silk, and this knowledge sucked her back into the fashion industry. She began taking silk painting classes and focused primarily on scarves. Though an amateur at first, Bivi made a decision to become an expert silk painter.

19

BAYFashion March 2011

“It’s about practice,” she told me. Bivi had patience and desire, and so every night for several months she painted one new silk scarf. Eventually, Bivi met a fashion producer at a show who encouraged her to pursue dressmaking. She later connected with him through Facebook, and he helped her put on her first show last July, where she showcased eight InLush dresses. She has had four more shows since, the most recent of which took place on March 5th 2011 at the L’affaire fashion show at the Pigment Cosmetics Studios in downtown San Francisco.

BAYFashion March 2011

It’s a kind of a full circle for Bivi. She doesn’t think of her work with InLush as simply making clothing, but rather as creating art. “If I didn’t get to paint, I wouldn’t be making dresses.” Much like an artist who starts out on a blank white canvas, Bivi starts out with plain white silk. “I’m in love with silk,” she told me. “There’s something about silk that is just so beautiful and so nice to work with.” She paints over the silk with French dyes that chemically bond to the fabric and allow the material to stay soft and silky. Bivi creates each piece in this way by hand. Nicole Rosenberg for BAYFashion

A Couple of Curves In this country, it wasn’t much more than 50 years ago when seeing a mixed race couple walking down the street together was completely unheard of. Today we see every color of the rainbow canoodling, marrying, and divorcing all over the news and internet. It’s time we do to Size-ism what we once did to race. I’d like to refer to it more elegantly, but let’s kick it in the low hangers and do everything we can to abolish all of the stereotypical images that have been ingrained in our brains by the generations (and their media) before us. Who cares if she is rounder than him? Who cares if she is taller than him? Who cares if he is skinnier than her? Beauty happens in all sizes, and it’s time we learn to relate to that and get ready to start seeing a mix of it everywhere. I’ve been paying close attention to various internet posting’s about this subject, and some of the major fashion magazines are coupling up regular size women with all different sizes of men and not making a huge fuss out of it for the sake of marketing strategy; they are doing this merely for the sake of creating something striking and interesting… images that we can relate to as people. This thought came to me again while I was soaking in a steamy bath after one of my recent magazine shoots. In this shoot I was partnered up with a few extremely handsome and incredibly fit men. After 30 years of having a specific image in my head of how a couple should look, I found myself questioning how people would respond to these images. Are they going to accept a curvy lady sitting atop the lap of a 20-something Adonis? Are they going applaud it, or will they poohpooh it? So, in the interest of stirring up our ideas of norms, that is what we did on these pages. I want to bring this wonderful concept here to the bay, and mix up the stereotypes of size in an editorial spread with some gorgeous, curvy, sassy, stunningly beautiful models. Couple hood never looked so hot, in my opinion…

LIFESTYLE

San Francisco may not be hot in March but there is always that occasional hot weekend that makes Bay Area women take off the layers and get into their swimsuits. We took a stroll along the beach on a ‘warm’ winter day and look what we found..

27

BAYFashion March 2011

The San Francisco Bay Area is the only place in the USA I will ever call home because as we say ‘there is no place like home’ there is now other place like the SF Bay. Where else would you find a beautiful woman like Cody Matthes enjoying the Sun on a beach in the middle of February in a teeny black bikini? Every year around the middle of February, the BAY Area experiences a small heat wave in the middle of Winter and our ladies can never let a warm day like that go to waste. Only in the Bay...

Tam Nguyen is hot, there is no two ways to describe this smoldering Asian angel with her high cheekbones and angelic smile. Of course she has a shape that makes us either jealous or evokes emotions best left unsaid. One thing is certain, no one can ignore this new kid on the block. This glass flower woven tiny monokini from PIRET Collection looks like it was made with her in mind.

Casey Lei is one of the nicest persons I have met recently. She is just nice, too nice to realize that she is creating a traffic jam on the beach showing off her perfect figure, in a ‘UjENA’ thong back one piece monokini. The day was already warm and toasty but with Casey on the beach, it positively started feeling like Summer

Sabrina has walked the ramp on countless fashion shows in the SF Bay. She said to me that she is not a swimsuit model and feels much more comfortable on the ramp than in front of a camera on the beach. But once on the beach this exotic lady was in her element, enjoying the sun and the waves while looking absolutely stunning in a gorgeous monokini from the amazing PIRET Collection.

FINE DINING MURRAY CIRCLE RESTAURANT by Shankha Goswami Once inside you will be ushered into a dining room which spells class from the furniture to the ceiling. Especially the ceiling which is quite an intricate affair.

Executive Chef Joseph Humphrey If you are looking for that exclusive place to take your special lady to, a place that spells class from the moment you step out of your car and hand your keys to the valet, check out Murray Circle Restaurant in the Marine County of San Francisco. Murray Circle Restaurant is located at Cavallo Point - the Lodge at the Golden Gate, 601 Murray Circle, Fort Baker, Sausalito, CA 94965. The drive down to the restaurant is scenic and may make your date wonder if have lost your way a bit but be confident and tell her that she is in for a treat as you wind down the road into the Fort Baker area below the western end of the Golden Gate Bridge. Make sure you make a reservation as this place is seldom available for walk in guests, primarily catering to the guests staying at the Cavallo Point resort. Parking is only valet and its very prompt and the way to go. There is some parking available on the street leading up to the restaurant but I’d advice against it as its really cool to have the care right there waiting at the door when you come out after dinner.

38

Executive Chef Joseph Humphrey is a Michelin Star winner and has years of experience working in top restaurants around the country and in the Bay Area. His creations are culinary works of art and I certainly recommend starting with the ‘Grand Tasting Menu’ which will give you a variety of tastes from French to Californian cuisine to get your appetite flared up for more of the goodness. Don’t forget to order your choice of fine wine or champagne to match the exquisite food from the extensive collection available mostly by the bottle at this place. For the main course my favorite choice has been the rabbit or the young lamb both available from the ‘Meats & Poultry’ section of the menu, but that is just my personal choice. Overall this place will not only serve you excellent food but delight you with excellent service and a very helpful staff who are always eager and very detailed in explaining the menu and helping you make the right choices to make your evening just perfect. So if you have a fashionista to please, this is the place to go my dear friends. This is a sure hit for a quite elegant evening for two. Sacramento Fashion Week brought in a week filled with hi-fashion, glamour and beauty to downtown Sacramento. Produced by Magnum Opus, this show was organized and executed with a smooth fluidity that is seldom seen outside shows set in the main fashion centers of the World. The organizers donated part of the proceedings to the ‘Make A Wish Foundation’ towards a shopping spree for make a wish child Denise who has acute renal failure and has been hospitalized for over 8 months.

BEHIND THE SCENES

49

BAYFashion March 2011

Duane Ram is a part of the production company called Magnum Opus based out of Sacramento, California. He is the driving force behind Sacramento Fashion Week and a inspiring young producer who likes quality over quantity. When I met him in Sacramento during the Sacramento Fashion Week this February I was impressed by his down to earth mannerism and cool composure. He is our featured ‘Showmaker’ for March. Shankha Goswami: Duane we would like to start by thanking you for inviting BAYFashion to Sacramento Fashion Week and giving us a ringside view, we were very impressed by your show and the overall organization of the event. You had some very impressive designers and we were impressed by the selection of models for the event. Duane Ram: Thank you. We had a few open calls throughout the year. I wanted the show to look professional but I also wanted it to really represent what is in Sacramento

BEHIND THE SHOW

SG: So Duane, tell us something about yourself. Where are you from? How long have you been in Sacramento? How long have you been involved in fashion?

50

DR: I’m actually from the bay area and started out there as a model. My educational accomplishments include television production, one of which won me an Emmy Scholarship for videography production,

awarded by the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences. I love the whole industry in general and am a professional actor and a member of both the Screen Actors Guild and the American Federation of Television & Radio Artists. I moved to Sacramento about 10 years ago and met up with a photographer who was planning an event to network with all the local talent. Her name was Grace Ballesteros and the event was called Magnum Opus. We started producing shows and I was more involved with the model management part of it all. I’m not quite sure when or how it happened, but the next thing I knew I was pretty much doing everything. Grace trusted me and relied on my experience as model to produce the shows. At the time I was still doing the commute to San Francisco. The one thing I wasn’t very happy about in Sacramento was where and how the fashion shows were done.

BAYFashion March 2011

Designer was doing club shows that started at around 11PM in a small venue. They weren’t getting the recognition they deserved. Yes it was a packed venue but the crowd was not there to see the clothes. They were there to see a show. There’s a difference. SG: Is this the first Sacramento Fashion Week you have organized? How many shows have you done in the past at this level? DR: The first fashion week was done in 2008 and it basically consisted one show and a launch party. I didn’t start producing til the following year. For 2010 I pretty much was in charge of the whole production. From the designer selections to the model casting. I also wanted to stretch out the week and add more days. It’s not an easy thing to do and so I was also trying to find producers. We had the dates set but then a whole bunch of wrongs happened. I not only lost a producer but lost the venue. So I made the decision to not do a show for 2010 and it all worked itself out for 2011. SG: What are future plans? Are you planning any other events in the near future? DR: Well now that we have established Sacramento Fashion Week I want to keep the momentum going but not overdo it. This is not New York or LA. What works out there does not always work here. It’s too early to say, but I may do a small show in summer just to keep the Magnum Opus name out there. However my main goal is to keep Sacramento Fashion Week alive. I don’t think we are ready to have two shows a year just yet. SG : What makes Duane Ram tick? What inspires you? DR : What inspires me is seeing people just going for it. Doing what they believe and just being creative. This production hasn’t been the easiest thing to do, but I believed that if it’s presented right people will come and support the local talent. That there is what inspires everyone else, and that’s what’s going to keep the city alive. SG : And lastly I am sure our female audience would like to know a little bit more about your ‘Status’ ? DR: LOL well I am single. It’s not easy keeping a relationship when you’re doing a million different things. I’m always on the phone texting or at a computer following up on contacts. Oh and I have a full time job as well as an accounts receivable manager. Don’t ask me how I make time to do everything, but yeah that pretty much kills my social life. I took 2 weeks off in December to visit family and after 4 days I was ready to return. By then my vacation was over and I was making calls and checking up on my associates making sure things were getting done… LOL Career wise I’m not where I want to be so I don’t feel like I’m ready for a relationship just yet…. but never say never

Constance NG - Design Label by Julia Saori

The 1st annual Constance Spokesmodel Search was held at the Carnelian Bay on Saturday February 26th, 2011. The event was a mix of fashion show and beauty pageant and marked the Finale of Constance Ng’s 2011 search for 3 spokes-models for her line of evening wear. The first round consisted of letting the contestants wear their favorite black or grey Constance Label 2011 outfit and styling it with their accessory of choice to create a look for themselves. One by one the 24 contestants strutted on stage in two rounds. The contestants walked the V shaped runway and then stood in a V formation on stage as the two MC’s asked them questions about Constance’s outfits, their fashion preference, world fashion questions and even questions on how they felt that they could enhance the label if they won. The 24 contestants were tested to show their entrepreneurial skills and their personality in this round.

Monochromatic Makeup

THE BEAUTY SPOT

by Aliya Qazi

60

We hear the buzz about “monochromatic makeup” but only a few of us know what it is. Today we will explore the meaning of the word and will learn the best techniques to master the look. Mono means one and chrome means color, so a makeup look that involves one color or the shades of the same color, is monochromatic or in simple words, natural makeup. This is my favorite type of makeup for two reasons. The first is the ease with which you put it on and the second is its natural appeal. You feel like a prettier and more confident you without wearing tons of makeup. Face and cheeks: Looking flawless with the “no makeup look” is no easy task but here are some tricks to get you started. The first trick to this look is flawless skin. Apply primer prior to your foundation to get a nice base. Foundation works a lot better on a properly prepped face. Wear a foundation that is closest to your natural skin tone. Contrary to public opinion, the best way to check your foundation is to apply it to your neck and not on the back of your hand. Use a concealer to cover blemishes, skin discoloration, or any darkness around the eye area. Then apply powder to control shine, this also allows the makeup to maintain longer. The next step is to do proper contouring and highlighting. Nude makeup is all about light and shade in the right spots. Take powder a couple of shades darker than your skin tone and apply it under your cheek bones as well as along the jaw line. Go for naturally flushed cheeks with pink and peachy shades and don’t forget to highlight your cheek bones for a healthy glow.

Eye: Brighten your eyes with a hint of gold, beige, or any neutral shade on your lids, followed by contour with a couple of shades darker than your skin tone; always highlight your brow bone. Apply a dark brown or black eye shadow very close to your upper and lower lash line, it gives you the illusion of thicker lashes, finish the look with a coat of mascara. Fill in your brows with an eye shadow closer to your natural hair color to get a very soft look comparable to sharp pencil edges. At night perfect the look by applying another quote of mascara, make sure to wear black eyeliner in your waterline and smudge it for a soft impact. Lips: Always use a lip liner to get the desired lip shape and to prevent fading. It is sometimes hard to find matching lip liner so use the one that is closest to your skin tone, it will work with pretty much any lipstick. For this look any nude, pink or peach color lipstick will work, complete the look with a hint of neutral color lip gloss.

Khrystyna Ukushu by Hilary Shepherd

It all began with a beauty contest at the age of 13 in Eastern Ukraine. Her hair was short and colored bright red; on this day, the tomboy wore a dress. Khrystyna Ukushu strutted her stuff and blew it out of the park, setting into motion a new-found appreciation for fashion. One that would ultimately change her life forever. Fast forward eight years, and almost by accident, Khrystyna fell into the world of professional modeling. Managing the career of a budding model led to photographers asking to photograph Khrystyna, which led to a portfolio of professional pictures. Next came the Elle Magazine and Look Models sponsored contest to become the next Bebe it girl.

The impression she left on the contest judges must have been a great one, because when Khrystyna arrived at the semi finals in sun glasses, heals, and a hat, she was almost instantly recognized by a woman from the Elite agency. Somehow, through the shock, Khrystyna was able to fill out a bunch of paperwork, pose for some snap shots and a tape a short video introduction. A couple of weeks after her return home, Khrystyna received a call with the news that she made it to the Finals in the nationwide contest. She was flown out to Beverly Hills, where camera men followed the six finalists while they enjoyed all the splendors the area has to offer. By the time the contest was over, Khrystyna was signed on with the Look Model Agency out of San Francisco. That’s when things really took off. Over the past two years, the now 25-year-old native of Russia has moved to San Francisco, immersed herself in the local fashion scene, modeled in photo shoot after photo shoot, and has even landed contracts with several national and international brands including Buxom cosmetics. Currently, Khrystyna is the 2011 face of Wet & Wild cosmetics, and can be seen all over the country at CVS and Walgreen displays.

MODEL PROFILE

Taking what she thought was a shot in the dark, Khrystyna entered the contest – along with 6500 other girls – and didn’t think much more of it. A few days later, a phone call came from New York during which Khrystyna was invited to be one of 600 girls at the semi finals.

When Khrystyna isn’t busy rocking the fashion world with her beautiful self, and working on building her new fashion event planning business, Ukushu Presents, she’s volunteering at the Raphael House in San Francisco, which provides family support service and shelter for families and children experiencing homelessness, and helping to promote other young models. Grateful for all the experiences she’s had, Khrystyna wants nothing more than to see young people go after their dreams and succeed at everything they do. “Listen to abstractive criticism, but never be affected emotionally by it; or it will exhaust you and make you very unhappy. Learn from everyone who succeeds in fashion, either from TV, magazines or even your best friend. Never be jealous, but support the reality. You are beautiful, every single girl is. It’s about how you show it and present yourself.” – Khrystyna Ukushu Khrystyna is available for private coaching and answering any questions she can via Facebook at facebook.com/ukushu or e-mail at contactkhrystyna@yahoo.com

CHARLESTON’S TIPS

How To Bring It and Stand Out!

66

by Charleston Pierce

Column foreword by Shankha: Models if you are reading this and you are from the San Francisco Bay Area, then you most probably know Charleston Pierce. Charleston was featured as the ‘Showmaker’ in our last issue and since then I have gotten to know him a little better and I realized that the title ‘Showmaker’ is too little for this Giant of a man. He not only organizes amazing shows, on top he makes models, he creates talent, he helps people with dreams and he inspires superior performances. Just his presence changes the tone of shows and his exuberance charges the air with electric energy. Charleston Pierce has been extremely gracious in agreeing to write a column for BAYFashion which will give tips to models about how they can stand out from the rest. Thank you Charleston!

Here are Charlestons 5 Runway Tips for March 2011: 1. Have fun! If you are having fun with it, you will project the best and most confident personality for the runway. 2. Keep it simple. Don’t attack too many poses, swing your arms or gallop down the runway. Keep it smooth and poised. 3. Ladies, give some hips. 4. Pause for at least 3 seconds at the end of the runway. Take your time. Remember you want the cameras to catch you. 5. Connect with the crowd.
