Meet Southern California’s premiere fashion photographer, Gail Bowman, a self-taught fashion photographer who rose from a newcomer to one of the top photographers in the area in a few short years. We first experinced Gail’s amazing work when she shot the amazing editorial featuring Ines Di Santo’s amazing line of wedding gowns. We were so impressed by her work, we had to feature her in BAYFashion and introduce her formally to the San Francisco Fashion Circle. We asked Gail to tell us a little about herself in her own words. “I got a late start than most on my journey in photography. It wasn’t until after my children were born that I discovered I had such a passion for it. I enjoy creating storylines with raw, mysterious, implied themes centered around high fashion. I’m spontaneous and like varying lighting and locations. I get bored with the same location and theme, so I have to constantly change it up. I thrive in a relaxed environment where everyone is having fun. I don’t like stress, it makes my team nervous and less effective. I use music as inspiration for my story lines, so I am always looking for new music in all genres. Music channels my creativity. I guess that comes from my singing background. I admire the work of Sofie Delaporte, Stefano Galuzzi, and Greg Kadel and aspire to follow in their footsteps. My goal is to open a teaching studio to pass on my experience to new and up and coming photographers and watch the art grow in them.” We expect Gail to have a lot more to contribute towards BAYFashion in the future and we wish her the very best in her journey of art and imagination.

Interviewed by Steffani Symons
Hi Natalie, thanks for interviewing with BAYFashion. We are very glad to introduce you to our readers from the San Francisco Bay Area and around the world. Steffani: Natalie, you are representing California in the Miss USA Pageant .Tell us a little more about that? Natalie: Yes, and I’m very excited because I was born and raised in Cali, unlike many past contestants. I grew up a block from the pacific ocean in Palos Verdes, and I am very grateful to be representing such a beautiful, diverse state. I competed for the title of Miss California USA 2012 on January 9th 2012, and will be competing in Miss USA June 3rd, 2012 in Las Vegas, NV at Planet Hollywood. Steffani:Tell us about yourself, where you are from, where you grew up etc? Natalie: I am 23 years old, and I am from Palos Verdes, CA. I presently live in Newport Beach, CA. As a senior at the University of California Irvine, I am currently studying Biological Sciences. I hope to attend medical school in a few years.
28
Steffani: Have you been modeling for some time, or modeling is a by-product of becoming Miss California? Natalie: I have been modeling since I was 13 years old, so 10 years now! I am signed with LA Models, and have previously participated in cycle 12 of America’s Next Top Model.
Steffani: Would you care to share your dreams with us? Where does Natalie Pack see herself in 5 years? Natalie: My dream is to attend UCLA medical school and become a dermatologist. So in five years I should be finishing up the last year of my MD program!

Piret Bikini
Retro Bandeau get it now
Fashion changes every season, but vintage always remains popular because it exudes sexiness without revealing too much. This style is perfect for women who are shy to show off their bodies but want to look tempting.

This bikini comes as a fantastic alternative to ordinary triangle bikinis. Look for bandeaus in new designs, exciting color blocking and interesting prints. But beware of wearing these trendy pieces if you have a big bust. It is a hot trend but be wise for the decision.

Sequins get it now
The list of swimwear trends of Spring/ Summer 2011 won’t be complete without sequins, shimmering in the sun and sparkling, which is used in bikinis now more than ever before. You can wear it with shiny sandals, wide metallic bracelets. As for the makeup, you should make it natural and unnoticeable.

Florals, wild and tribal prints will be very popular and hooter than ever. There are other options of print python, leopard, stripes, zigzags and kaleidoscopic.
Pastel This year the color palette is pastels sunny and chic: bright yellows, mint greens, and cotton-candy pinks. The deep, burnt orange shade is now pastel version as well as coral and citric light green; in opposition, strong vibrant pink, royal blue and very light cobalt are in trend in the runway now.
Cutout The old classic swimsuits of a successful cut will never go out of fashion. This option makes the figure slimmer, comparing to the shiny or decorated bikinis!

Shoulder Ruffles This trend was inspired from swimdress plus size styles and become more popular these days. You might not feel very comfortable swimming in it but it is great for posing beside the pool or at the seaside. Try either monokini or bikini to understand which style looks best on you
It rules the fashion world since SS 2011 and has been
everywhere. Tiny or demure, ruffles will look nice at the neckline, down the middle of a one-piece, along the bottom of a tankini top, covering the entire brief bikini top, or tiered with several layers on the bottom. But beware of wearing these trend pieces if you want to look slimmer.

The Brand Wen’s convertible fashion clothing line was inspired from the need to be able to work in a professional environment during the day and then party hard in the evening without having the time to go change and select a different outfit. Wen experienced this need doubling in DJ school after her taxing day as an architect.
The Designer Trained as an architect from China and the US, Wen Guo has come a long way to become a fashion designer. Raised in China, she designed and created her own skirts before the age of ten. She has Architecture Masters from UC Berkeley, then proceeded to work in the worldrenowned firm SOM and successfully became one of the top 1% youngest licensed architects in the US.
Models: Ashley Brannon, Annette Dana & MF Wilson Photos: Shankha Goswami Hair: Noelle Lynne Makeup:Terry Alabata and Berkeley Oxana Bjorsen
The line was named BODITECTURE derived from the architecture inspired design and formal architect training which reflects clearly in Wens pieces. Each piece converts into atleast one extra look if not more, with some pieces creating as far as 4 different looks. In August 2011, she formed a team to officially launch the brand, and it seized public and media attention almost immediately. Within 6 months of launch, the brand was selected to showcase in SF Fashion Week and LA Fashion Week, and it was even mentioned as “one of the biggest show stealers” by LA Fashion Week media due to the overwhelming audience response.

Runway 2012 - Defined
San Francisco State University’s Fashion Show Sizzles by Joan Currie
“Defined embodies the contrast of interpretation from one viewer to another. Each piece going down the runway is strikingly different from the next and from an angle only you can define” SFSU Fashion Show Program
BAYFashionMay 2012
San Francisco State University’s Apparel Design & Merchandising students presented their 18th annual fashion show entitled Runway 2012: Defined at the SF Design Center Galleria on Thursday, May 3, 2012. It was a high-impact sophisticated show from start to finish! Nearly one hundred models strutted the catwalk wearing highly original and well-crafted individual creations and also designs from twenty-two collections. The offerings were pure eye candy in terms of color palettes, fabric selection, design elements, embellishments, and accessories
The inclusion of Goodwill Industries as a community partner for upcycled garments emphasized the need for responsible fashion consumption and the advantages of home sewing. Along those lines, the children’s outfits were delightful and demonstrated how to make fashion accessible to all members of the family. Congratulations to Executive Producer Hamid Khan and the media production team. The camerawork that projected the models’ images to the large overhead screen, especially at the end of the runway, was spectacular.
BAYFashion Favorites! BAYFashion Magazine’s top favorites were designs from Jacqueline Truong’s Passion of Tide collection – “inspired by the colors, movements, and views of oceans and beaches.” They included: a dark blue Paso Doble-like skirt ensemble, a girl’s dress with an asymmetrical hemline, a cream high-volume hitch skirt with turquoise bodice, and a strapless dress with a generous multilayered skirt.

Our Favorite Songs, Videos & Artists..NOW!
1.
Gotye Featuring Kimbra “Somebody that I used to know” – Music Video
The breakout Aussie star storms America with an 80’s style pop smash that is destined to be classic. Such a simple catchy tune about love gone bad with Gotye wailing on a big chorus like Sting & Kimbra tells the female side. The video is simple, very cool, shows them in body paint and is creative.
3.
Bloody Beetroots featuring Dennis Lxyzen “Church Of Noise” – Music Video
The BB is an Italian electro house & dance-punk music project. They hit it out of the park with a dance-punk beat that is pure energy and gets a rock boost from ex- Refused frontman Lxyzen. The video shows them rock’n out with cult followers & a meaning that all is possible and classes and divisions will be gone.
2. Linkin Park “Burn It Down”
I love Linkin Park & this new single from their forthcoming album, Living Things, rocks! Chester Bennington has one of the best voices, as he delivers a pretty verse over a rave like synth groove, then rips into his epic chorus growl. Mike Shinoda steps in with a rhyme that rounds off their sound. This is one to rock out or dance too!
4.“LiveSoundgarden To Rise” – Music Video
The Grunge Gods storm back after more then a decade with a new album that is sure to kick ass. This 1st single featured on the Avengers movie soundtrack is undeniable with one of my favorite vocalists of all time Chris Cornell, who still has that awesome low tone & that screeching wail, combined with Kim Thayil’s shredding guitar is rock genius at its best!
5. “Never Adam Lambert Close Our Eyes”
Adam Lambert exploded on American Idol into Rock stardom with his amazing vocal range & charisma. This new song from his new dance filled album is an electro pounding awesome beat. A Bruno Mars tune with a Dr. Luke beat combined with Adam’s vocal means pure radio & club domination.
Hey everyone, welcome to the May edition of my Music.Beatz column. Spring closed out with a bang, with Coachella kicking off festival season, big album announcements as well as major festivals launching their big summer lineups. Aussie import Gotye, takes America by storm with hit single “Somebody that I used to know”, topping the Billboard top 100 charts & Maroon 5 looks to invade the dance clubs with new hit “Payphone”, featuring hip hop’s Wiz Khalifa. In music news, Dre Dre & Snoop Dog headlined back to back sold-out closing weekends at Coachella Music Festival in the desert, with special guests including; Eminem, Wiz Khalifa & a ground breaking, jaw dropping almost lifelike hologram of the late Hip Hop Great, Tupac Shukar - wow! This could change the game, imagine a John Lennon & George Harrison hologram to unite the Beatles for a new tour, Michael Jackson rising from the dead to do his “This Is It” tour or Freddy Mercury performing again with Queen, Elvis Presley? I would pay to see that! In other news, Pepsi is prepping a 25th anniversary campaign this month commemorating the release of Michael Jackson’s massive groundbreaking album “Bad”, with remixes by Superstar DJ’s Skrillex, Diplo & A-trak which are among the names connected to the new project - maybe Pespsi or someone will also launch a hologram tour? This month also expect new albums by Marilyn Manson, Norah Jones, Santigold, Jack White, Adam Lambert, Garbage, Simian Mobile Disco, Gossip, Slash, Scissor Sisters & Iceland’s Sigur Ros. Festival season official kicked off with Coachella’s back - to - back weekend musical madness & 300,000 music fans converging on Palm spring’s desert. The Sahara dance tent was the most popular as rave kids & hipsters piled in to catch breakout performances by Superstar DJ’s including David Guetta & Calvin Harris who was joined on stage by Rhianna & Katy Perry. Electronic Daisy Carnival Las Vegas announced their 3day lineup of DJs & electronic acts. Lollapalooza Chicago & Outsideland San Franciso also announced their amazing 2012 editions. Looks like summer is going be off to a great start! Next month I will give you a recap of the month and share what’s next. Remember to stay inspired & breathe some music into your soul daily! 6. Major Lazer featuring Amber “Get Free” – Music Video
7. Maroon 5 featuring Wiz Khalifa “Telephone”
Maroon 5 aim for dance-floor domination on their clubby new album. This 1st single is already getting mass radio appeal and is #3 on the Billboard top 100. The song, is a catchy pop jam that features Hip Hop star Wiz Khalifa and is going be a summer anthem whether you like it or not. Of course Adam has the hit show The Voice to help.
8. The Limousines
“The Future” – Music Video
This Bay Area indie dance pop act scores with this very creative video from Director David Dutton. Video shows the duo rolling down a dusty road in a Back To The Future Delorean sports car time machine, nice! They get into a wreck and tell a dark tale of the future that makes you want to live. It’s a nice tune, but the video is excellent!
9. David Guetta featuring Sia “Titanium”
The French Superstar DJ producer has been putting out dance hit after hit. This awesome House pop groove is the 4th hit single from his monster album, Nothing But The Beat and features Aussie vocalist Sia. Sia’s voice soars beautifully over Guetta’s beat, as she sings about inner strength and being as strong as Titanium.

“Disparate Youth” – Music Video
Shanti White, known to most as Santigold, who is a songwriter, producer, and pop singer, that sounds like she’s from some faraway Island with her awesome vocal style & crazy cool New wave, Punkpop, dancehall beats. This single dropped in Feb, but I wanted to share it now, as it’s great catchy song. Check out the video, showing Santi riding a bike along the coast & enjoying her time!

BISHOPEMAGNETIC “Playhouse” remix
The Indie electro house dance punk DJ project’s 1st music video is a simple futuristic style winner, which features some of the most beautiful sexy robotic girls in an all white setting that is reminiscent to a Tron, Blade-runner look and feel and the girls look like they are popping out of the screen. Playhouse was originally written by electro duo, Afrobeta and this remix with live bass and an additional BM vocal, is a slamming club banger. The video was shot at San Francisco’s Picky Studio and directed by Clubben TV’s L.A Hernandez. The video starts with a sexy girl, looking like wonder woman, played by Mystie Rodriguez, using a touch screen to wake up her robots. From there, its just pure eye candy with awesome crazy dark scenes. The cast of female robots played by Scarlett Lash, Bradxy Cheneque, Jade, Jacqueline Tang, Corinne Doherty & Megan Chaney, really come to life and make you want to watch and listen again and again!
Here is what’s happening for me this month. My DJ project, Bishopemagnetic, just premiered a new music video, check out the video spotlight section. Also BM is making huge strides and has finished 3 new tracks. Look for a BM tour soon. Q: To start with tell us a little bit about your background and inspirations for fashion A: I was raised in a less than privileged household. Growing up I often contemplated what I didn’t have without ever noticing the reality that beauty is everywhere. That self-discovery process has been a consistent theme for me and ironically a source of peace. When you have nothing, you have nothing to lose. This is why my journey is really that of empowerment and actualization. So much of my generation has been stripped of confidence and genuine selfworth. I know that there is so much work ahead of us a global society and there is so much I want to do to improve circumstance. So why fashion? It’s the perfect podium to be heard from.
Q: When did you start designing clothes, who is the target demographic for your line? A: the first garment I remember making is unspeakable. One can hardly call it clothing. Actually, im in love with fashion photography and part of why I started designing was because there was nothing interesting to photograph where I live so I decided to make my own clothes. Easier said than done. I do have a demographic in mind but in think more importantly I can tell you that I have a 9 year old client and a 72 year old client. The first one has no income and the second has lots of it. So I’m not even sure what to think of anymore. Let’s just say it would be grand if I could see my clothes in Colette one day. Q: Are you currently in stores, where can our readers buy the outfits? I know a few already who want your clothes. A: That is so flattering. I’ve done a few sporadic trunk shows from time to time and I’m very humbled to have harbored such a beautiful response and loyal following. At this point I want to continue refining the key looks that will serve as foundation for the brand. The website where you can shop online(www.franciscocastro.net) is due back up at the end of summer. If you sign up for the newsletter you get invites to the trunk shows and fashion shows. That’s a good way to get the clothes. Q: As a designer what is your aspirations, are you looking to be an independent line or go work for a brand? A: Actually, a little both. Since its inception in 2009, the Francisco Castro Brand has opened a lot of doors for me as an individual and every step I take with it creates symbiotic opportunities for professional and personal growth. This summer, I’m switching lanes to the east coast and moving to Manhattan where I’ll be conducting more freelance work for fashion-related small business and ideally, a larger identity. I’m pursuing a BFA in fashion design next year at Parsons which should keep me there for a few years. Though I will always nature the brand I’ve created, I wouldn’t be opposed to directing my focus elsewhere should I be picked up by a promising label. There’s something quite extraordinary about the creation process (which itself is an evolution). I remember the first time I saw a client walking on the street wearing one of “my” dresses (I feel as if I share a part of myself in each piece). A very simple beige silk slip that fluttered in the wind. At first I didn’t recognize the dress and only felt a peculiar familiarity. Then I realized I had made her dress and she was so beautiful and she genuinely felt so beautiful; inimitable is the word that best described her that day.

This summer, I’m switching lanes to the east coast and moving to Manhattan where I’ll be conducting more freelance work for fashionrelated small business and ideally, a larger identity.
Q: What makes Francisco Castro tick?
A: I’m starting to understand the Francisco Castro woman as a girl transforming into a woman and in some ways, returning back to that youthful naivete. We live in a very complex society and I feel as if sometimes simplicity (whatever that may mean on any given season) is a return to who we are-fundamentally. The woman I dress represents that journey and lives for that reality. She knows where she comes from and where she needs to be but she also seeks to understand who she is be

coming in that process. Ultimately, though the silhouette may change the inherent beauty remains consistent and it’s that sensibility which drives my motivation to design. It’s really a celebration of humanity. I think the very most fascinating truth about us is that we simply exist. Q: Tell us a little bit about your experience with the fashion industry? A: it’s just like any other industry except the people are prettier and have attitude issues. I’ve worked in varying price point retailers both corporate and small business. In my opinion, both are critical experiences to anyone seeking employment that actually involves talking to another human being. I’ve done retail buying, merchandising, interiors and similar consultation. Very specific client styling and wardrobe management. Fashion and product photography. Graphic design. Web development. When you are just starting you have to wear as many hats as possible. It would be nice if that were from Philip Treacy. ;) Currently, I design for Ian Saude (www.iansaude.com) Q: Give us an idea about the immediate future plans of your line and where they are available for purchase. A: I’m letting the brand from on its own rather than biting off more than I can chew. I’m slowly integrating an accessories line. The last thing I want to do is have an item in the collection for the purpose of filling a category. What happen is you have all these cookie-cutter type looks that I think saturate the line with unnecessary junk. Until I fully love something do I consider it part of the collection. I only sell it if I truly love it. The collection is available for purchase online at www.franciscocastro.net

Making a Mark on Fashion
by Lillie Apostolos It’s sexy, mysterious, and the ultimate showcase of individuality. A tattoo embodies strength of character as its permanence and artistic voice sing praise to the wearer’s unique personality. Today’s culture loves creativity, personality, and a great tattoo, as it confidently screams, “This is why I’m different!” We see the art etched gorgeously on a plethora of celebrities such as Angelina Jolie, Johnny Depp, Nicole Richie, and the list goes on.
Bettie Page look. Rock your shoulder tattoo with a vintage inspired ensemble, throw on that vibrant lipstick hiding in the bottom of your purse, and pull it together with some beautiful jewelry.VOILA! Your look is totally your own spin on retro chic, and you’re equipped to strut around all day, as you own it and love it! The more confidence you exude, the more people will stop to tell you, “Your outfit is SO cute!”
Tattoos are a great art form to utilize if you’re seeking to express your individuality, however most of us are stuck pondering a few questions before committing to them. One question our inner fashionista might ask is: how do I balance this within my modeling and/or fashionable life? While this question is obviously your voice of reason (a.k.a.: voice of your concerned mother) knocking on your conscious door, fear not, my friends. It’s viable to unleash your Fearless Artist, while keep up with your Fashion Icon. There are plenty of ways to work your sassy and classy into everyday life.
For the most part, we want to proudly rock our ink everyday, but what about the tattoo on your foot that you try to cover for work, or your sleeve that hits right below the hemline of your ¾ length dress sleeve? Well, this is when your creative and fashionable sides of the brain work as one to improvise. An opaque tight looks great with a feisty heel; it covers your secret ink at the board meeting while outfitting your dogs with an edgy and work appropriate style. Show off your whole arm piece, or try a sheer, long sleeve blouse for it’s ethereal style, and airy feel for those hot summer days.
I met a woman who had breast cancer, and underwent a double mastectomy. After surgery, she tattooed her scars with girly images to remind her daily that regardless of the surgery, she was still the same feminine woman. Remember, your tattoo is part of who you are, and tells your story. It’s definitely something to be proud of, you original Siren. Keeping that in mind, there are just as many ways to do your tat justice, as there are to do it dirty. The trick is incorporating it into a fashionable trend or idea. An ultra hot way to showcase your ink is to don a great
The tattoo has played a crucial part in the explanation of culture and individuality. This ancient custom, practiced by tribes from obscure regions of the world dating far back into History’s archives, has been used to differentiate races, express servitude, marital status, and culture among many other things, and will continue to do so in future generations. They’re symbolic portraits of identities. It’s your story, and that makes it the ultimate statement piece to accessorize any fashion.

Love Etc...
How Do You Know? by Jason Martineau
Attraction. We all have an idea about what we like – a certain body type, hair or eye color, an intoxicating voice, many qualities of allurement that pique our curiosity and generate magnetism between people.
BAYFashionMay 2012
Is it attraction, as in physical attraction?
Is it attraction as in a special kind of friendship,
O
Or is it in fact, love?
f course what is considered attractive is different for everyone, even though everyone experiences something by that same name. It is also thought that attraction is the prerequisite of love. At times we might believe it is the very same feeling. We can be attracted to a complete stranger, or even a photograph, does this mean we also feel love? There are some perspectives worth considering, each with their own interpretation. The bio-evolutionary scientists would state that attraction is simply the drive of our DNA, compelling our bodies to seek another immune system that is as different from our own as possible, for the potential of offspring with an even stronger one. Thus we are helpless to this powerful drive, which would seem to explain the spectrum of pairings that exist. We’ve seen couples that seem nothing like each other whatsoever, and yet others who fit together as though they were one. Another view, from the psychologists, states that this is the realm of projections and fantasies, stemming from early childhood and the established familiar patterns experienced at that time. This might be plausible, as it is reasonable to consider that often we might be attracted to someone we do not really know at all, and so, what is it besides their outward appearance that we could be attracted to? It could indeed be coming from ourselves. This also provides an interesting perspective on the frequent “honeymoon period” of an early relationship, how after some time that seems to wane, and the couple endures some bumps as they learn about the person who is actually there, as the projections fall away. The New Age community has a host of viewpoints, ranging from Astrology and soulmates to past lives and karma. This also could seem believable at times if the attraction and the subsequent glow of connection takes on an almost metaphysical quality, as though it were pure, unadulterated magic. Various religious and spiritual views compare the attrac-
tion state to some recognition of the self in the other, or as a mirror of a larger cosmic order. Suffice to say, where there is attraction, there is a strong energy, and there is power. There are two aspects to attraction that are often blurred together, one is the sexual desire we feel, and the other is the yearning to be around the person, share time, trust, and connect. Frequently, depending upon one’s station in life and other factors, these are considered separately, such that the sexual desire is ascribed solely to the “lover”, and the feeling of emotional closeness ascribed to the person we call “friend”. As we all may know, when these two things are mixed together, much confusion can arise. One feels attraction of the “lover” variety, the other feels attraction of the “friend” variety, and the two suddenly find themselves in an unusual predicament. If we are lucky, we might have those in the same person.
After our hearts have been broken once or twice, we might feel it time to change our ideas a little. Romance has a definite mystique to it, often riddled with confusion, excitement, beauty, people trying to impress each other… but when this calms a little, if the two are still together, something else needs to be there, too. That becomes an increasingly important place to look for enduring attraction, and it comes in the form of friendship.
o the question arises, how do you know? Is it attraction, as in physical attraction? Is it attraction as in a special kind of friendship that comes rarely in life, or is it in fact, love? Are they all different? Surely enough we will each have different answers, however if we will consider the various viewpoints given by respectable thinkers coming from the traditions we often look to for answers in life, whether they are science, psychology, metaphysics, religion, or poetry and music…we might find some answers. What is perhaps more important is to look first and foremost within our own hearts. What is it like to know someone? Can we love someone before we know them? We can evidently be attracted to them, does that mean we are in love?
T
S
Our earliest love relationships tend toward physical attraction. We do, after all, have bodies with hormones and instincts, and those are quite strong. Whether those are also examples of real love is really dependent on each person involved, and what they bring to the experience.
Photo: Tim Engle, Models: Melissa Lewis, Ry Ferg
So if you have a special friend, and maybe they like you, but you don’t see them “that way”, yet you find yourself constantly wanting to spend time with them… then, try it on for a moment. If also you are finding some kind of pattern of relationship in your life you wish to change, the special friend might very well be the perfect place to start. For some reason, we sometimes feel closer with friends than with lovers… why would that be? Shouldn’t it be the other way around? here is a saying, “You always know who your friends are.” That seems fair, so do you also always know who your lovers are? If you’ve had enough of a particular pattern in your life, and find yourself frustrated with love and the game of attraction, with its frequent beginning, middle, and end, then maybe it’s a good time to look to that special friend, the one who was always there, at each breakup you endured, who cared about you and comforted you and never judged you. Why are you spending so much time with them, anyway?
At some point, who is more important, the one you want to sleep with, or the one you want to wake up with? If you are lucky, maybe you can have both in the same person…

ips, sexy luscious lips... we use them to kiss our loved ones and to express our deepest passions. One of the most important features of our face, a pair of smooth, glossy, luscious lips are sure to make you stand out and attract attention of the right kind!! Here are some tips on how you can ensure healthy sexy lips. The skin of the lips is very thin and sensitive as compared to the rest of the body and face. Lips have four to five cellular layers whereas face skin in general has up to 16 protective layers. Lips have no hair follicles, oil or sweat glands; therefore completely exposed to the harsh environmental factors. Moisture loss in lips is approximately ten times faster than the rest of the skin. Extreme windy and cold weather may result in chapped lips, so do not forget to wrap a scarf to cover your lips. Lips generally contain very little amount of melanin but people with fair skin are at a greater risk of sunburn and wrinkles around the lip area due to UV rays. Wear a lip balm with at least SPF 15. Wearing a hat and using an umbrella are other ways of protection.
by Aliya Qazi As I always mention in my articles, read the product description and ingredients very carefully and do not use more than directed. If nothing helps see your doctor for allergies.
Some lip balms contain ingredients such as salicylic acid and AHAs, which are great for exfoliation and should be used once in a week or whenever needed so that your lips are ready to absorb moisture. But your daily moisturizing balm that you carry everywhere with you should be very emollient. It should contain Ingredients like Shea butter, beeswax, almond, jojoba, olive or coconut oil. Medicated petroleum jelly is also recommended for very flaky lips. Read the ingredients carefully in order to get the maximum benefit.

Some other factors that may result in cracked lips are excessive lip licking in an attempt to keep them hydrated but saliva evaporates quickly leaving the lips even drier. Saliva has digestive enzymes, which have adverse effect on lips. Flavored balms contribute to lip licking. If you drool at night zinc oxide ointment protects lips. Mouth breathing, dehydration and low indoor humidity level due to air-conditioning are some other factors that rob the lips of muchneeded moisture. Some candies, gums, mouthwash, flavored toothpastes contain ingredients that you might be allergic to. Certain lipsticks and even lip care products have ingredients such as menthol, eucalyptus, camphor, cinnamon, alcohol, citrus and peppermint etc. that can irritate your lips. Drink lots of water to keep your body well hydrated. Eat a balanced diet with fruits and vegetables. Blueberries, strawberries, watermelon and green vegetables are anti-oxidant rich and high in water content. Niacin, riboflavin, iron and all the B-complex vitamins are very beneficial for lips. Avoid smoking as well as eating spicy, salty and sugary foods to relieve your inflamed lips.

Approximately five million Americans have Alzheimer’s disease (AD), according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. AD, defined as a progressive, degenerative neurological condition, affects a myriad of brain functions in older adults primarily. Classic symptoms include memory loss, impaired reasoning and language skills, and changes in behavior. Although the etiology of AD remains unclear, certain genetic and environmental risk factors are suspected to play a role in the development and progression of the disease. Studies have suggested an association between ongoing and varying cognitive stimulation and the prevention or delayed onset of AD. An exciting and fun way to maintain or improve one’s cognitive ability is to develop a brain workout using several of the applications (apps) available for mobile phones and tablet computers. Many apps maintain statistics about the number of games completed for specific skill levels, performance times (fastest, average, and recent) and other indicators of brain function, such as memory retention for improvement tracking. Once the apps have been mastered it is a good idea to switch them out for different or more challenging ones. Brain workouts may include such varied app activities as vocabulary building, foreign languages and dance step instruction, and mind games. Check out the ratings and descriptions of the apps listed below at an app store (e.g. www.apple.com, www.amazon.com) to determine if they are right for you. Note that apps are continually being created as well as improved, so it is recommended to visit the app store frequently.

-Chavarria Aliya:Tell us something about Bobbie Chavarria the hairstylist. Bobbie: From the start I was destined to work with my hands. Originally planning on a career as a diesel mechanic, the choice changed with a gift of haircutting shears. So Diesel mechanic no more, I was on the path to do great things in the hair industry. Aliya:What do you enjoy most about your work? Bobbie: I love the creativity my work has to offer. I enjoy working in the salon with my clients, helping them achieve the best hairstyle customized just for them. I enjoy working behind the scenes on the photo shoots where the entire team strives to achieve a certain look. I feel very happy to review all the great things I had a hand in creating. Aliya: Define a good hairstyle: Bobbie: Aliya:Your sources of inspiration: Bobbie: Inspiration comes daily in many forms, from many sources. The most random thing can be the most inspiring. I believe continuing education is a great source of inspiration therefore I attend as many programs, classes and hands on events as possible. On the shoots the team becomes an inspiration. The way the wind is blowing the tall grass can inspire me to create some wheat colored highlights on long hair. Inspiration is everywhere; you just need to keep your eyes open.

in protecting your hair from the heat and give it some humidity resistance. You do not have to wash your hair daily if it does not need it. Do not begin styling your hair with a brush if your hair is still wet. Remember to use sunscreen on your part line when braiding to avoid sunburn. When detangling your hair, begin from the bottom and work up. Aliya: Hairstyle/cut Do’s and Don’ts: Bobbie: Resist the urge to cut your own hair; no matter how much you want to. Scheduling regular salon appointments will help keep your hair in the best possible shape. For hair to be healthy, trim regularly, even if you are trying to grow them out. Do not attempt to color your own hair or having a friend do it for you in the bathroom. Aliya: Future plans as a hairstylist Bobbie: There are many things I would like to accomplish in the future to build up my career. I plan on attending additional training sessions on color, styling and make-up. I would like to pursue a career in films and TV as a hairstylist. I am working on building YouTube videos. I would like to travel the world to work with other artists and bring home some great inspiration.
Aliya: Favorite product and product line and why Bobbie: L’ANZA was my first love in the beauty college. I have tried other lines but I keep coming back to L’ANZA. Not only do they offer a large selection of cleansing, conditioning, styling and finishing products but also an incredible color line. In the salon I would opt for L’ANZA keratin Healing Oil Hair Treatment whereas on location I love using L’ANZA Powder Up Texturizer. It creates an instant volume where you need it. Aliya: Favorite tool Bobbie: This is a difficult question as my favorite tool could change depending upon the situation but if I had to choose one it would be Crickets Friction Free Round Brushes. These brushes have improved heat retention as well as faster drying time. Aliya: Best hairstyling and hair care tip for the readers: Bobbie: “Cleanse, condition, style and finish” are important aspects of your hair care regime. Once you have washed your hair, prep it with a leave in treatment recommended by your stylist. When blow drying, flat ironing and curling, section your hair with a clip. Use of a thermal protectant spray will also assist
