DÉFI FRANCOPHONE

A project-based French program that places culture at the heart of language learning

KLETT WORLD LANGUAGES

LANGUAGE SPECIALISTS

KLETT WORLD LANGUAGES is a publishing house specializing in print and digital instructional materials for learning and teaching world languages.

Our mission is to help students become global citizens by developing their intercultural and critical thinking skills through language learning. We aim to help students learn and use language in real-life situations by creating engaging and meaningful content that sparks their curiosity and motivates them to learn.

We strongly believe that teachers play a key role in language learning, and part of our mission is to support them and to provide ample opportunity for professional development.

THESE ARE OUR VALUES

Having them is not enough. We live by them.

1 COMMITMENT

Because everyone on the core KWL team has a background in education and works closely with educators and students, our commitment goes far beyond our daily work. We understand the needs of educators and students and we are passionate about looking for solutions and tools to help them succeed.

3

AFFORDABILITY

We are committed to providing high-quality print and digital content at affordable prices to all who want to learn a language. We guarantee lower prices for high-quality content and simple, easy-to-use technology.

5 COMMUNICATION

We view languages as tools for communication and action. To learn a language and build authentic communicative competency, students need a realistic context, a true need to communicate, a focus on meaning, and the right linguistic resources. That is what we provide in our educational materials.

2 INNOVATION

Our educational materials focus on the most current pedagogical methodology. They follow the ACTFL Guidelines for Proficiency, include Can-Do statements, and address the 5 Cs. Our digital resources provide original and authentic content via a simple and easy-to-use platform.

4 EDUCATOR SUPPORT

We see educators as our partners, and the core of our mission is to support them by providing professional development opportunities, highquality documents and activities, and instructor resources in an easily accessible format.

6 GLOBAL PERSPECTIVE

Our content is created to help students use language to communicate and interact with other communities and cultures both in the United States and abroad. Our books present a respectful, modern, and open-minded perspective of our world and its cultures that allows students to dismantle stereotypes and to cultivate an awareness of global concerns.

Why DÉFI FRANCOPHONE?

DÉFI FRANCOPHONE is a dynamic, student-centered program that promotes authentic communication. It integrates task-based learning, intercultural engagement, and a hybrid learning environment, making it adaptable to diverse learning styles while fostering equity and inclusivity.

Why choose DÉFI FRANCOPHONE?

Communicationcentered:

Students create projects and make decisions that relate to their reality through taskbased activities

Authentic documents: Carefully-selected resources provide a deeper understanding of French culture and break down stereotypes

The three modes of communication —interpretive, interpersonal and presentational modes— are integrated into the lesson sequences

A communicative approach to grammar where students first focus on meaning, then on structures

A multidisciplinary approach engages students in acquiring real-world skills by drawing content from diverse fields

Equity and inclusion: The program promotes equity, inclusion, and global awareness in French language classrooms

DÉFI FRANCOPHONE is a two-level program for introductory through intermediate courses.

The KWL Hub is a platform offering digital content and resources for students and teachers who work with DÉFI FRANCOPHONE. À quoi ça sert ?

Le feng shui sert à aménager les espaces pour vivre mieux. Tout est important : la disposition des pièces et des meubles, les couleurs et les formes.

Et les couleurs ? Vous devez faire attention aux couleurs et à leurs effets...

Le vert favorise la créativité.

Le blanc favorise le calme et le repos.

L'orange favorise la convivialité.

Le marron, le noir et le gris favorisent l’anxiété et la tristesse.

A reflective and a co-constructive approach to grammar, always based on texts presented, introduces concepts in an inductive manner.

Il y a / Il n'y a pas de

The invariable expression il y a means there is or there are. Il y a is commonly used to point out the presence or the absence of someone or something.

Ex. : Dans la cuisine, il y a un frigo.

Ex. : Il y a vingt étudiants dans la classe.

The negative form of Il y a (there isn’t / there aren’t) must include the preposition de before the noun.

Ex. : En Espagne, dans certaines régions, il n’y a pas de chauffage dans les appartements.

Ex. : Dans la salle de bains, il n’y a pas d'eau chaude.

! CAREFUL! When spoken in colloquial language, we can hear "ya" [ja] for il y a and "y'a pas" [japa] for il n'y a pas

C'est + adjective

C’est + a masculine adjective is used to make a general judgment, or to express appreciation or criticism about something.

Ex. : La place Rouge ? J'aime bien parce que c'est beau, c'est grand, c'est impressionnant.

Ex. : Les chambres de bonne ? C’est génial mais c’est trop petit pour deux personnes !

! CAREFUL! To express an opinion about someone, use il/elle est + adjective.

Ex. : Elle est intelligente, il est sympathique, ils sont gentils Colors

Colors are adjectives, and like other adjectives, they generally agree in gender and number with the noun they describe. Generally, the feminine is formed by adding an -e to the masculine form and the plural is formed by adding an -s to the singular form.

Singular Plural (+s)

Un meuble noir

Masculine

Feminine (+e)

Un mur vert

Une chaise noire

Une pièce verte

Des meubles noirs

Des murs verts

Des chaises noires Des pièces vertes

There are, however, some notable exceptions for certain adjective endings.

Masculine ending Feminine ending rouge jaune rose mauve fauve violet violette blanc blanche

REMEMBER! Singular adjectives ending in -s or -x do not change in the plural.

Ex. : un appartement gris, des appartements gris

Ex. : un fauteuil bordeaux, des fauteuils bordeaux

! CAREFUL! Marron and orange are invariable.

Ex. : La table est marron.

Ex. : Je déteste les murs orange

REMEMBER! Compound adjectives describing color are also invariable.

Ex. : une chaise verte / une chaise vert-clair

Ex. : une pièce bleue / une pièce bleu-foncé

Ressources grammaticales:

Explanations and tables that describe morphology, as well as syntactic structures, are presented here.

Remember and Careful icons point out particular cases or exceptions to grammar rules.

Pouvoir is a modal verb, meaning it is generally followed by another verb in the infinitive.

Ex. : À Pontivy, on peut louer une maison pour 500 euros par mois.

Ex. : À Paris, on ne peut pas louer une maison pour 500 euros par mois.

REMEMBER! Notice how the negation ne... pas is formed around the conjugated verb.

Ex. : Vous pouvez inviter des amis, mais vous ne pouvez pas être bruyants.

Il faut + infinitive

PAGE 99

Il faut is derived from the impersonal verb falloir, which is only conjugated in the third-person singular. Since it is used in many idiomatic expressions, il faut is difficult to translate directly, but can be understood as “one must” or “it is necessary to.” Like the modal verbs pouvoir and devoir, il faut is generally followed by another verb in the infinitive:

Ex. : Il faut trouver un appartement.

Ex. : Il faut mettre les plantes dans les coins de la pièce.

REMEMBER! Notice how the negation ne... pas is formed around the conjugated verb.

Ex. : Il ne faut pas mettre le lit sous la fenêtre.

The verb devoir

The verb devoir (to need to or must) expresses necessity and obligation.

Subject Verb

Je dois

Tu dois

Il / Elle / On doit

Nous devons

Vous devez

Ils / Elles doivent

• Like pouvoir, it is a modal verb, meaning it is generally followed by another verb in the infinitive.

Ex. : D'après les règles du feng shui, les plantes doivent être dans les coins.

REMEMBER! Notice how the negation ne... pas is formed around the conjugated verb.

Ex. : L’appartement doit avoir des couleurs claires. Il ne doit pas être sombre.

• Like il faut, the verb devoir expresses necessity and obligation, but il faut is impersonal and devoir is not.

Ex. : Je dois ranger ma chambre (devoir - personal) I need to tidy up my room.

Ex. : Il faut ranger sa chambre (il faut - impersonal) One must tidy up one’s room.
