ARCH7082 DESIGN 12 CLEMENT BLANCHET + KENT MUNDLE SEMESTER 2, 2021-22 THE UNIVERSITY OF HONG KONG DEPARTMENT OF ARCHITECTURE

INTRODUCTION This is my portfolio for semester two, Master of Architecture Year 1. This semester I joined Studio D, led by Clément Blanchet and Kent Mundle. Studio D begins with a series of site researches, studying the site of Cite Universitaire, a student housing complex, with students all around Paris and living here. Site research such as history, programming, circulations, and urban fabrics was distributed among different students in the studio, and each responded with a specific aspect. After the research are being consolidated together, we need to come up with a site proposal, along with some massing studies to highlight the potential site location for the upcoming design phase. During the site selection, more research regarding the site constraints, and site situation will be investigated more deeply. These restrictions and site context will be the foundation for forming a programming proposal. Program massing and connectivity with the site are then explored and fine-tuned. The scheme will then be presented through a series of drawings, and site analytical research. This portfolio contains the entire process throughout this semester. Please enjoy the portfolio. More to come next year!

Historical Overlays The history of Paris is made of layers upon layers of urban fabrics. During the research phase, I have consolidated maps from 1700s to 2000s, and document the notify changes on the urban fabrics, places added, and places demolished.

Planning of the thiers walls begins in 1841, and construction was completed in 1846. The thier walls have ditches, with a 250m non-building zone around the perimeter. Nearby town Gentilly beginning to be established.

Haussmann’s renovation of Paris started in 1852, with safer streets, larger avenues, new train stations, central squares, modern housing with uniform building heights, new water supply, and sewer systems, bridges. Gentilly was annexed and became part of Paris.

In the 1920s, the complete dismantling of the enc building of what has become a series of 23 conn city. The population of the non-building zone bord Romani people from the provinces and neighbori

closure permitted the further nected boulevards encircling the der was swelled by migrants and ing countries.

17 February 1953, a law was passed that finally abolished the legal status of the non-building zone and allowed work to start on a new ring road. Boulevard Peripherique was constructed between 1958 - 1973. During the construction, it disconnected the connections between the north and south,

As time passes, not much of the urban fabrics changed. Gentilly plans to renovate the highlighted area for greenery and better sustainability, with connections between the East and West. However, the urban fabrics between the cite Universitaire and Gentilly is still being cut off.

1945 vs 1960 The Boulevard Peripherique, dissects the urban fabrics, making connections between the districts harder to communicate. The Catholic Church of Gentilly, originally belonging to Cite Universitaire, was once abandoned by the lack of visitors and connection with the Cite. The peripherique creates hours-long traffic congestions and pollution.

Gentilly, a town that is closest to Cite Universitaire, is a district that I researched deeper. From the local PLU reports, clues regarding the Gentilly town’s current problems and suggestions are raised, from the resident’s interview and feedback to the Gentilly town management team. This report acts as a foundation for the required programs and how they can aid the local communities more specifically.

Cite Universitaire and Gentilly both lacks food services spaces and Communal event spaces, such as workshops and event spaces for the community to gather and learn new knowledge. From the PLU Reports, the Gentilly side also lacks a public market that sells fresh food, which is quite shocking during my research phase, a 17k population without a market. Due to these problems and situations, my design will include these three major programming: Workshop + Co-Working spaces // Food Hall // Public Market

RESEARCH GOVERNMENT PROPOSALS

EXISTING PERIPHERIQUE

FUTURE PERIPHERIQUE

Current proposals from the government originate from a couple of international competitions, trying to reduce the impacts of the peripherique on the nearby environments. It includes reducing lanes of the peripherique, Lowering the speed limits, Zeroemission car lanes, and Creating walkable boulevards next to the peripherique. However, none of the proposals aimed to remove the entire peripherique completely as it still serves transportation value, we can only co-exist with a downsized boulevard peripherique. The two urban fabrics are still being disconnected and need a way to help bridge across the current peripherique.

DESIGN 01 THE CITYLINK

To improve on the current government’s proposal, it is important for connecting the urban fabrics from North to South. These collages showcasing the concept of removing the importance of the notorious peripherique, creating an opportunity for a gap and connect back the city again.

Make use of spaces above the peripherique for creating spatial opportunities?

During the initial design phases, I focused my design and research at the T- junction next to cite Universitaire and Gentilly, with a total population of 23k due to several major problems I have discovered after reading the Gentilly town reports. The proposal is trying to enhance the connection between the north and south.

METABOLISM FRAMEWORK The development of the urban fabric is slow, buildings occupied the valuable spaces for possible developments and spatial proposals for solving the existing lack of programming and space issues within the district.

A new framework is suggested to be proposed, in which main structure cores will be positioned on the existing empty land, without major interruptions to existing fabrics. The core will then connect through a “central shaft”, which is constructed by cranes positioned on top of the concrete cores.

The central shaft will hold up an elevated “ground” for constructing new developments and spaces. During this process, people and spaces may have changed and moved onto the new framework for better facilities and views.

As the framework keeps on growing, the existing urban fabric keeps on adapting to the framework to access the spaces and potential to the elevated “ground”. Eventually, this process will repeat and create layers of elevated “grounds”, the process reinforcing the structural cores and allowing diagonal circulations between the “grounds”.

REFLECTIONS NOTES ON MID TERM REVIEW Donn: Realistic and Practicality of the Structure that last hundred of years, Programming and Systems of the scheme Good for the design to think of the future How to create a hard structure for the design to suit a timeframe of hundreds of years How to make the structure that lasts The detailing and real situations A section of the materialization resolution In the systems of the city, how do the spaces interact/connect back to the system? How to layer the programs? The possible scheme for the extension of the highway, maybe new ground on top of the highway A staging of removing/sinking the highway in the future?

Joshua: Top-down logic for the city expansion How to help the existing fabric to join the framework How does the bridging help with the end sides of the two connected land? How the Paris existing situation is for the urbanism development (allowing for the expansion of the city like this?) Urbanism and sprawling solutions current urban planning hard for innovation in Paris -> how to make it french? how the infrastructure statements are more realistic Question the unradical and radical urbanism The radicality of infrastructure in the 1960s vs the current days is the 1960s idealogy still suit the modern era? the future era? Build the connection line vs building the connection of motion nodes How to embed the strategic thinking of modern days?

DESIGN 02 PERI STITCH How to create less impact to the surrounding environment?

ITERATION 02 FORM AND SUNLIGHT

“ÉPISSAGE” / “STITCHING” join or connect by interweaving the strands at the ends.

ITERATION 03 EPISSAGE and ALIGNMENT

ITERATION 04 STRUCTURAL FRAMEWORK

THE PERI STITCH This structure maximizes the metabolic flexibility and freedom for the users to develop their own spaces and plans, is also suggested to be replicated throughout the entire peripherique, by the flexibility of the building form and programs inside, they can suit the specific district needs.

The structure framework investigates the possibility of constructing right ontop of the resized peripherique, minimizing the interference and demolition with the existing urban fabrics while constructing the required amount of spaces for splicing between the two urban fabrics. The framework starts with the concrete core sitting next to the empty space next to the peripherique, they connect to the steel megatruss at the rooftop spanning across the peripherique,. Horizontal structure beams are attached to the mega truss, forming the rootop itself. Suspension cables were then hang down from the structure beams and holds up the floor plates.

WORKSHOP / CO-WORKING The workshop and co-working spaces is position closer to the cite universitaire’s side, allowing the two urban fabric users to learn new knowledge and work together. The working spaces also not be limited within the building itself, but it has a crane and allow movable working kiosks be moved all around the cite universitaire district. Theatre position at the ground floor, opened for visitors to sit down and enjoy the cite universtaire greenery field in front and align with the Maison international.

FOOD HALL Food Culture is one of the core cultures in Paris and France. A Food hall contains different possibilities of food, spreading across multi-nations. The Food variation and promotion of different countries is supporting the idealogy behind Cite Universitaire’s origin, to bring peace and exchange knowledge among different countires. Food can attract public flow between the building and allowing communication between Gentilly citizens and Cite Universitaire students. Therefore, it is positioned in the center core of the design.

PUBLIC MARKET As Gentilly is lacking a public market space, this design allows a flexibility of public market spaces, which the citizens can set up market booths and stalls, purchasing and communicating in the process. The design also allows market booths/ stalls be stored close the the rooftop megatruss structure by a system of roof cranes at the end of the market space. The booths can contain green plantations and be lift up to the roof, be lowered down again during harvesting, allowing a flexible schedule of different owners and create variations within the market.
