Hubbard Woods School, part of The Winnetka Public Schools District 36, offers a developmental instructional philosophy tailored to each student’s needs, from kindergarten to fourth grade. Stepping into Hubbard Woods reveals its historical charm and unique character, with Mann Park’s council ring, a studentdesigned kindergarten fountain, and a commissioned library mobile. The school’s mascot, elected by students in 1976, adds to its spirited identity. Formerly Skokie School, renamed in 1924, Hubbard Woods remains a nurturing educational environment that blends tradition with forward-thinking approaches for students’ holistic development.

The Skokie School, built in 1921 and funded by private subscriptions, holds a special place in Winnetka. Initially overlooking the Skokie marshes, it opened to junior high students in 1922. Over the years, it underwent major additions and renovations. Carleton Washburne School was constructed in 1969 for grades 7 and 8, while Skokie accommodated grades 5 and 6. By 1980, changes allowed fifth grade to move to elementary buildings and sixth grade to join Washburne. In the late 1990s, Washburne’s population grew, leading to remodeling and reopening parts of the building. Skokie and Washburne now form a middle school campus, carrying forward Dr. Carlton W. Washburne’s progressive education legacy.

New Trier High School serves about 4,000 students from Chicago’s North Shore suburban communities of Glencoe, Kenilworth, Northfield, Wilmette, Winnetka, and portions of Glenview and Northbrook. The New Trier mission is “to commit minds to inquiry, hearts to compassion, and lives to the service of humanity.” New Trier supports this mission through a rich and rigorous curriculum that places it among the country’s top schools academically as well as through its numerous opportunities for involvement outside of the classroom in activities, athletics, fine/performing arts, and social service. A comprehensive Student Services program promotes students’ social, emotional, and academic growth.

We acknowledge the different learning styles of each student by providing opportunities for observation, exploration, problem solving, cooperation, and application. Our support staff fosters an inclusive approach, and includes a school nurse, a social worker, resources teachers, a gifted and talented teacher, and speech language pathologists. We foster the development of each child spiritually, academically, emotionally, socially, and physically by building confidence, encouraging self-reliance, responsibility and the desire to learn.

As one of the best private schools in the Chicago suburbs, we prepare students with a challenging education that requires them to think critically, communicate effectively and engage fully in their intellectual growth and personal development. In doing so, they become self-confident, ethical citizens of the world who embody our motto, “Live and Serve.” When we were founded in 1919, North Shore Country Day (NSCD) was the visionary answer to a fundamental question: What matters most when educating a child? Continually refining our answer to that question and evolving our program propels us forward with purpose and passion.
