The calls and texts started coming in while I was celebrating Lunar New Year with my parents in Staten Island; they weren't the usual greetings of good fortune, but rather the terrible news of a shooting spree in Monterey Park, the center of Taiwanese American culture in Los Angeles and the residence of many of our friends and family members. I recognized the fake terror in these callers' voices. It was reminiscent of the language used by those we loved when,

in May of last year, a separate shooter opened fire on a Taiwanese American church congregation in Laguna Woods, a senior community where my parents had pondered relocating before the pandemic kept them from going.

Before Before we could fully process what had happened, news of yet another Asianvictim mass shooting broke, this time in Northern California's serene Half Moon Bay, where seven farm workers, the majority of whom were Chinese immigrants, had lost their lives. We were still searching the internet in dread to learn the names of the victims at the time. My dad and I somberly listened as newscasters paused to specify if their

instance, Wade Michael Page, a white supremacist, shot worshipers at a Sikh gurdwara in Oak Creek, Wisconsin, in 2012, killing six people and injuring four more. This was an attack on us. Robert Aaron Long started shooting at many Asian-owned spas and massage parlors in the Atlanta area in 2021. There have also been Asian mass murderers, such Wayne Lo, who opened fire on Bard College at Simon's Rock in 1992, killing two people and wounding six. SeungHui Cho, who committed the horrifying slaughter at Virginia Tech in 2007, which was the bloodiest school shooting in American history. 14 people were hurt and 6 people died in Elliot Rodger's attack on college students in 2014 near the University of California, Santa Barbara.

had lived in their new country for a long time, which was horrifying. Together, they gave mass murder a new face, one that many of us found shocking precisely because of how familiar and lined it seemed. This face might just as easily have belonged to our uncles, fathers, or grandfathers.Early accounts claim that the alleged shooters were motivated by a variety of desires: political wrath in the case of Mr. Chou, personal animosity in the case of Mr. Tran, and retaliation for perceived slights in the case of Mr. Zhao. But the parallels are startling. They were all male immigrants seeking a fresh start in America.

However, America has always been strict with its newest immigrants, and in recent years, both talk and policy have gotten worse. Each of these men lived on the periphery yet were close to considerably wealthier and communities.

They each had solitary lives, according to those early tales; two of them were divorced and had neither close friends nor devoted family. According to reports, all three of them interacted violently. with friends and colleagues. Who would even be aware if these men were deteriorating if they were voluntarily cut off from their communities of origin and alienated from people around them? It is doubtful that males in their condition would seek professional treatment or that they would locate it if they did due to social taboos and a persistent lack of culturally and economically accessible mental health care. Each of them—a security guard, a truck driver, a forklift operator—performed physically demanding front-line work during the pandemic, when animosity and hatred were being indiscriminately directed at people with Asian faces.

Asian immigrants were published by news organizations, particularly ethnic news organizations. Stories of violence spread quickly on social media sites like WeChat and Line, including the false but horrifying anecdotes about "Haissam Massalkhy," a Lebanese immigrant who allegedly ran over and killed a Chinese American man on purpose to avoid going to jail in order to use fictitious "visa loopholes" granted by "sanctuary laws" to obtain permanent residency in the United States. (One version of the Massalkhy story that was widely spread with the heading "Kill a Chinese, Get a Green Card." )

guns. The University of Michigan and Eastern Michigan University researchers discovered that individual experiences of Asians' decision to buy influenced by racial discrimination and a heightened awareness of cultural racism through news and social media reporting, among other factors.

No matter what motivated the purchase, having a gun increases

more probable that a gun will be used in a mass shooting. Mr. Chou, Mr. Tran, and Mr. Zhao all emigrated from nations where civilian gun ownership is basically nonexistent. In America, there have already been more than 40 instances of gun violence with at least four victims in the first three weeks of 2023. In any other country in the world, that number would be reason for significant public worry, but in the United States, it is the status quo.

The integration into a culture that has proudly selected the red of innocent blood, the white of scared eyes, and the hazy blue of gun smoke as its colors may be the biggest act of murder that is humanly imaginable.
