Years ago, a small group of people dreamed of helping church members and experience what it means to be blessed. From a small room catering to less than 100 program members, who could have imagined what used to be a dream, will grow this big? From its humble beginning, KMBI has now grown to a non-stock, non-profit development organization, which has areas of operations in almost all parts of the country. And as it approaches its 25th year of existence, it’s now reaping the fruits of its labor – from receiving recognitions from other entities, to enjoying several years of success, to establishing more areas of operation, and to building enhanced partnership with key organizations. We will continue to build the organization from this strong foundation. KMBI’s 25 years wouldn’t be fruitful without its people. Our effort of more than two decades of fighting against poverty should not stop from here. With this year’s theme “Level Up! Next Generation” – our journey has just begun! We will continue to affect and influence our society and equip them with knowledge and skills to knock down poverty. We can only do so much if we do not have the best people who are committed in helping others. At KMBI, everyday is an opportunity to grow beyond present challenges. And I am purposely praying that more people will join the organization who will push for holistic transformation. Our purpose continues to be a simple one – to encourage people to grow and bear fruits that will last a lifetime!

Mass Wedding outshines typhoon Falcon
Left Photo: Couples from Valenzuela branch uses “padjak” or a pedicab as their bridal car going to the reception after the ceremony. Right Photo: Grooms helping each other to prepare themselves for the big day.
Rains and floods did not even stop them! 563 couples in 66 branches nationwide exchanged vows and tied the knot despite of Falcon’s raging winds and rain as KMBI spearheaded its annual mass wedding. “Malaki ang tulong nito. Una, spiritually blessed ka ng God, blessed ka ng minister, blessed ka ng society...so malaki ang benefit nito,”(This really helps. First, you are blessed by God, you are blessed by the minister, you are blessed by the society...so it’s really beneficial,”) says Joel Clavecilla, Tandang Sora, branch manager. It was an emotional, fun and Spiritual-filled event as these couples made a covenant before men and God in the sanctity of marriage. Couples from Valenzuela branch even had to ride on a truck and pedicab, with the brides’ wedding gowns safely kept in a plastic bag, just to make it to the venue. For some, it was a dream come true as some couples had concerns as to what kind of wedding and church they would attend because of difference in religious beliefs. Ronalyn Marino, a program member from Tandang Sora and a Catholic, who got
married to Radia Solaiman Disomimba, a Muslim, said that she’s grateful because KMBI has prepared an ecumenical wedding for couples like them aside from the financial support it gave for the wedding. (There were problems – in religion and family...now KMBI gave us the kind of wedding that suits him...to legalize our family and our relationship.”) Ronalyn and Radia already have a child. The ecumenical mass wedding was joined by couples of different spiritual background and orientation who have been living together and most already have children. This is one of the organization’s major activities that are being taken care of by the Transformation Department. It aims to reach one of the components of its SEES (Spiritual, Economic, Environmental, Social) program, which is to draw people near to God and have a deeper relationship with Him.
Perez receives KILOS scholarship grant Mark Josep Perez, a 15-year old son of Marilou Perez, KMBI program member from Upper Cavite branch, recently received his scholarship grant for the school year 2011 – 2012. Perez immediately reported on May 25 at Alliance for Philippine Partners in Enterprise Development (APPEND) office to process his enrolment at the University of Sto. Tomas, España, Manila. Perez graduated at Tagaytay City Science National High School. According to him, at a young age, he dreams to be the pride of his parents and to become a lawyer someday. He decided to take up Political Science in college to reach his ultimate goals. “I would like to thank KMBI for their support because I wouldn’t be here without KMBI. May God continue to shower them with blessings and use them to inspire more people,” said Perez. In partnership with APPEND and Gordon and Helen Smith Foundation, KMBI is able to support knowledge development and leadership potential of promising youth.
KMBI taking its outreach strength to 71 To complete the 71 branches as part of KMBI’s expansion plan for 2011, it opened its last branch at Pinamalayan, Oriental Mindoro. The branch was formally inaugurated on April 18, 2011 graced by the organization’s chairman and president, Damiana Exiomo, and other management committees. During its inauguration, Pinamalayan branch disbursed a total of P1,236,000 of loans to 309 clients. While keen in expanding to more branches, Exiomo said that the organization will now focus on beefing up its current branches.

I HATE MY JOB
Leaders’ Edge
By: Francis Kong
Y
ou hate your job. You’re thinking of quitting. You are not happy and you find that you have to drag yourself out of bed every morning so you can go to work. If you feel you’re being trapped in this situation then today’s message is for you. Having a job you hate is never easy but sometimes you just need to grin and bear it until you have another gig lined up. Here are some productive things you may want to do: 1. START THE DAY WITH SOMETHING POSITIVE. Your daily morning ritual is extremely important. Start with being positive by doing something positive. Go to bed early and wake up early so you will have time to start the day with quiet meditation. Or by reciting a simple prayer. You may want to set your alarm to play upbeat or classical music, have a wonderful sip of coffee and read a section of an inspirational book and when you improve your mornings, you will be surprised at how this can do wonders for the rest of your day. Going into a job you hate will be worse if you get to the office feeling rushed, stressed and frazzled. Set aside some moments of solitude each morning. 2. KEEP YOUR EYES ON THE PRIZE. It is not true that everything about your job stinks. You are not working in the sewage are you? Do not exaggerate. There will always be something out there in your work life that
will make you happy. So make weekly goals to help you achieve those goals. But be careful with your daily goals too. Do one thing each day to help you reach your goals. Do not be too obsessed with crossing all your items off your “To-do-list” every day because this will frustrate you. Sometimes it is easier to make it to 5 o’clock when you can keep your eye on the prize. When you get up in the morning, set a daily objective for yourself and make sure you achieve it. This will give you a sense of accomplishment and keep you feeling good about your progress. 3. DEVELOP YOUR SKILLS. You may not love your job for the moment but do not rot. Use your time to learn new skills. This way you are putting in you more value and worth and preparing yourself to be a better candidate down the road. Attend your company training courses, learn something new on your computer. Read books. Listen to tapes during lunch. Turn this job that you hate into an opportunity for personal growth and improvement. 4. EXERCISE. Your problems and challenges become bigger than life when you are weak and unhealthy. So go to the gym. Run. Take a nice long walk. Put these activities in your schedule so that you will have something to look forward to every day. 5. CELEBRATE. Find little ways of treating yourself. Celebrate your victories. You beat the deadline. Your boss compliments you. Find out what makes you feel better inside,
no matter what is going on outside. Plan out your next vacation. Join a small group. I know so many young people who are involved with Bible study groups and they really look forward to their weekly meetings. I guess here they all meet together and pray that God be merciful with their bosses. (joke….don’t take me seriously here…..) 6. IMPROVE YOUR PERFORMANCE. It doesn’t matter whether you like your job or you hate it. You must make it your goal to go to the next level and excel in what you do. Never for a moment think that just because you are employed you are working for somebody else. Your current accomplishments will be your equipment in future opportunities. 7. ALWAYS BE POSITIVE. Do not let your unhappiness in your job destroy your relationship with people. Maintain your contacts and keep your relationships positive. And this included the boss you love to hate. Realize that this too shall pass. Keep your chin up and be a professional. If you are faithful in the small things then big things are bound to come. Helen Keller says: “Keep your face in the sunshine and you can never see the shadow.” Believe me, there is sunshine even in your cubicle.

Leaders’ Edge
Leadership is a magnetic personality that
Do you still remember the best leader you’ve ever worked for? What are the traits that made that person a great leader? In the corporate world, when you are in the position, people normally look up to you. They follow you because you are in the position to direct or manage them and you are a good leader. But what if people just simply follow the title attached to your name and not with your vision and courage? Think about it, would you be a good leader and make good leaders in the future? Or your leadership style would suck and hold back your team?
can just as well be a glib tongue. It is not “making friends and influencing people,” that is flattery. Leadership is lifting a person’s vision to higher sights, the raising of a person’s performance to a higher standard, the building of a personality beyond its normal limitations.” –

In leadership, titles should not stand alone. It should be backed up with character - a character that motivate and inspire your team. Your title can help you start with your leadership, but only character will let you succeed. It doesn’t matter if you are leading a team of two people, an ENTREP center of 30, or an entire organization of thousand. The bottom line is, anyone can be a leader, but only those who have character can be a great one. I know your next question would be what are the characteristics that all great leaders share? Now, to help you with that, here are some tips that would help you become a great leader.
Leaders’ Edge
Be Trustworthy As Collin Powell said, Trust is the essence of leadership. So how can you become a trustworthy leader? First, you must have competence; it is the first reason why you are in your position by the way. So, it is your competence first that attracts your followers. Of course, don’t forget to enhance your competence as time goes by. Second, you must have integrity; it is as simple as being honest with all your dealings. Learn to apologize when you are wrong. Being a leader doesn’t mean that you are always right. Be righteous according to God’s eyes and He will help you make things right before man. Third, know how to respect; respect is always a two-way process; you respect people before you earn respect. It is not only about you being respected but it is also how you respect others. Lastly, you must have consistency; okay, let’s say you demonstrated competence, integrity and respect, but if it is not consistent, it will surely be blown away. You have to be consistent in everything you do. No one would like to follow a leader that is trustworthy one moment and unpredictable the next days.
Be passionate on the vision Passion is contagious. Let your team feel your passion and let them emulate it. If you have genuine passion for the vision of the organization, you will help your team expand their vision too. By doing that, you can also help your people to believe that they can attain more. You can work together towards one vision and goal. It would be easier for you to make them follow because they support the vision.
Become a good communicator Learn to explain things well to allow your team to have a firm grasp of the ideas that you are trying to convey and how to make things done. Also, don’t forget to genuinely listen to them. Communication takes place
only when your team understands what you are trying to say. As a good communicator, you should know your audience, you must be conscious of how and what you are going to communicate with them.
Think of your people Leaders don’t just think of themselves, they also think of how to elevate their people and the entire team. Inspire them to take action and enhance their capacity. Think about their strength and how to maximize it. Do not try to do everything yourself, trust your people, it should always be teamwork. Your people will appreciate your willingness to trust them.
Remember that character creates trust and trust makes people follow – that is leadership. Leadership is different from management, though manager should provide leadership, not all leaders are managers. Leadership is actually about people skills and working towards what is right for the benefit of the organization and its team. Everyone is a leader, hence, we are encouraged to be a character driven leaders… Don’t just lead…develop a character to lead!
In Developing the Leader Within You, John Maxwell wrote about differences between character-driven and emotion-driven people: CHARACTER DRIVEN:
EMOTION DRIVEN:
Do right, then feel good.
Feel good, then do right.
Are commitment driven.
Are convenience-driven.
Make principle-based decisions.
Make popular decisions.
Let action control attitude.
Let attitude control action.
Believe it, then see it.
See it, then believe it.
Create momentum.
Create momentum.
Ask, “What are my responsibilities?
Ask, “What are my rights?”
Continue when problems arise.
Quit when problems arise.
Are steady.
Are moody.
Are leaders.
Are followers.

– it has long been prized as a precious metal, perhaps one of the most commonly known chemical elements in the world. If one hears silver sounds, it’s clear and soft. For 25 years, the Kabalikat para sa Maunlad na Buhay, Inc. or KMBI, has been helping the entrepreneurial poor carrying the flagship program of holistic transformation. Its vision is to see every individual it reaches to have a better living and a deeper relationship with God and the rest of His creation. 25 years of hardship, of perseverance, of continuing hope and endless love for the people all for the glory of God! Let’s look back at the early years of KMBI, from taking a bold step of planting small seeds of faith to what it has now become. ΩΩ From a church-based ministry. United Methodist Church, Valenzuela City – this
birthed the endless possibilities for KMBI when it started as a church-based credit program in 1985, only catering to its members during that time. It only had one worker in a six-square meter working area. One of its first founders who thought of the concept was the late Aurelio “Jun” Llenado, Jr. He was working then as bank executive officer in Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (Central Bank of the Philippines). Together with the other first four, which include Dra. Amelia Gonzales, Noel Alcaide and Emmanuel “Ka Emmy” De Guzman, they responded to the call of God, which is to share His love and see the poor people live in abundance. KMBI’s heart has always been for the poor, helping and equipping them both financially and spiritually. ΩΩ As a non-stock, non-government development organization. It was in 1986 when it was formally launched as an organization. It only had less than 50 clients who received financial aid from KMBI. Four years later, it made a tie-up with
y
Alliance of Philippine Partners in Enterprise Development, Inc. or APPEND, first and one of the largest groups of Christian development NGOs in the Philippines. KMBI and other institutions under APPEND network share the same sentiments and values in uplifting the lives of our Filipino families, regardless of their religious and political affiliations. And until now, it has been serving the poor by providing sustainable financial and non-financial services. ΩΩ With effective approach and methodology. In 1991, it implemented the Ugnayan ng mga Kristiyanong Mangangalakal (UKMA) project that became the prototype of the Branch Scale Up model that is being adapted in several countries worldwide. UKMA gave opportunities for the clients to meet together and be enriched with spiritual and leadership trainings. The Branch Scale Up model, also known as Trust Bank model, is a combination of Grameen concept and several other microfinance approaches. To create stronger tie-up, it also established partnership with Opportunity International (OI) Network in 1994.
ΩΩ Striving and growing stronger in its operations. 10 years after KMBI came to existence, it inaugurated its first building in Valenzuela City in 1995. KMBI knew that in order to survive and see its vision through, it must have solid foundation in the field of operations that is why it has formulated its 11-year plan to establish branches in Northern and Southern Luzon and in Mindanao. It has never gone weary in improving its operations as it continuously seek every opportunity to be of service to every Filipino family. Up to date, it has been operating in 71 branches with five mega branches nationwide.
But KMBI remained strong, not withdrawing from its advocacy to pressing towards a better future for everyone.
ΩΩ Living with standards and excellence. For more than a decade, KMBI has been receiving awards and recognitions from different institutions for its exemplary work and undying dedication to serve the poor. It constantly redefines its structures and processes to be of better service to people both for its clients and staff. And with the recent ISO 9001:2008 certification in 2010, it is committed to maintaining and/or improving its processes.
KMBI, starting from its field personnel to the office personnel, to the management and directors, to the Board of Trustees, are all motivated to serve by one thing and that is to serve the Lord by serving the poor people of the country.
ΩΩ Yielding but not breaking. Several disasters have hit its program members and staff; challenges are up every now and then.
ΩΩ Exists to glorify God. Proverbs 19:17 says, “Whoever is kind to the poor lends to the LORD, and he will reward them for what they have done.” KMBI, through God’s grace, has been active and unwavering in achieving its goals and in making God known to them. The poor will realize the existence of the Holy One if they will experience how to be loved and be taken care of. And this is the driving force of every individual behind the name, KMBI.
Truly, silver is one of the finest metals that signifies vigor and vibrancy. As KMBI celebrates its 25th year of existence, the organization will continue to soar high and reach out to more and more Filipinos all for the glory of God. Reference: http://bullion.nwtmint.com/silver_uses. php

very organization has its own arrow so does every individual. But how will we integrate ourselves among others who also have their own personal goals? How can we grow with them? During the annual general assembly held on January 2011, we are reminded that, what God wants is for us to be fruitful, to bear more fruits and these fruits should last. The theme verse this year, that is anchored to John 15:16, explains why every person, though he/she may have his/her own endeavor, should seek other peoples help and mingle with them in order to survive and be more productive. As unique individual, each has his/her own talents, strengths and weaknesses and it is human nature that we desire something good for ourselves. We plan for our future; we think of better things to come; we look forward to achieving all of them. However, can we arrive from one point to another without any circumstance of meeting another person? Each one of us is compared to a wild plant in the midst of the forest. People come and go leaving that wild plant unnoticed. Gardening is the practice of

growing plants; of tending a garden while gardener is one who works in or tends a garden. This gardener takes care of the plants and sometimes prunes them if he needs to so it can grow better and bear more fruits. The wild plant is segregated among the others to give more room to grow on its own without affecting other plants and vice versa. This is the potting
stage – the ME arrow. Just like the wild plant, we also need someone to look after us – to prepare us for something better. This person or group
of persons sees our potential until we are able and our talents are made VIABLE for anyone to see from the outside arena. After the potting stage comes the gardening stage. We are taken out of our shelves to mingle with others and complement each other’s strengths and weaknesses just like the wild plant when it is ready and can survive with the others. From being able, we make ourselves sustainable. We bear more fruits because of the relationship and interdependence we have with the other groups. In this
organization, we allow the managers to manage and develop our skills. This is the WE arrow.
When the wild plant continuously grows and bears more fruits, it become sustainable. And these fruits last. This is the landscaping stage. Together with the other plants, it grows more and even becomes more beautiful. Same thing with us, if we go together towards one
direction, all of us will become productive and efficient. From the WE arrow, it becomes the US arrow. It’s true that every individual is unique in his own way. But God created man not to
live alone. Man needs other people to take care of him, to encourage him, to challenge him and to grow with him. It’s the beauty of having a meaningful relationship with one another. And this is one of the secret of keeping an organization. Each component performs its duties well and together, results are even better. Though each one is different in his/her own way, heading towards one direction and bearing fruits that last means a more viable, sustainable, and stable organization.

WALANG Relationship Matters

“The single most important ingredient in the formula for success is knowing how to get along with people.” ) - Teddy Roosevelt -
at marami pang iba.

Balik eskwela, Balik homework Ni Rose Ailene R. Peña
Buwan ng Hunyo. Katapusan ng tag-araw at hudyat ng tag-ulan. Maulan. Malamig.
Mas

Net Generation Sino ba sila?
Ni Lea J. Gatpandan-Domingo
G
STOP

Magkakaroon ng Peace of Mind.

Project Update
KMBI soon to pilot test IMEP By Mishell M. Malabaguio
Davao Area Manager Hazel Laurente, Metro Davao 1 branch manager, Grace Asedillo, together with Mr. and Mrs. Letecia Tabotabo during the awarding of KMBI’s Individual Microenterprise Loan.
Clients Lydia Malot and LeteciaTabotabo of Metro Davao branches recently received the much awaited individual loan from KMBI. Each of them received Php150,000 loan in March 2011 as KMBI’s proactive response to their urgent needs. This individual loan is just a prelude of the actual program that will be dubbed as the Individual Microenterprise Program or IMEP. Prior to the intervention, Malot, a nata de coco contract grower, lacked capital and was at the mercy of a supplier-financier for raw materials. The demand for her product was increasing but due to the high interest rates she gets from her supplier-financier, who also controls the raw materials, Malot decided to ask KMBI for help. During this time, another client, Letecia Tabotabo, was also asking for a bigger loan amount from KMBI. Tabotabo runs a manpower agency wherein she needed additional revolving fund for the employees’ salaries and cash advances. These pushed KMBI to offer the initial features of IMEP. IMEP intervention helped Malot increased her production and get orders
from ProFoods Cebu and Del Monte. Most importantly, it freed Malot from her previous supplier-financier. Tabotabo, on the other hand, has more funds to lend to her employees. She and her husband, Rogelio were also able to channel enough working capital to their supplementary businesses. While the intervention is on-going, the actual IMEP is being developed to provide both financial and non-financial services. The financial services will include loan packages, capital build-up, and life and nonlife microinsurance, while the non-financial services will include skills training, businessmatching and linkaging, values formation, and business coaching and mentoring. IMEP zero in not only on loan packages but on the non-financial services that intends to provide growth development plan for both the business and the owner. At present, the Product Development Team is preparing for the IMEP pilot testing in Davao City. The intervention given to the two clients created buzz among program members and branch staff. Thus , they started to inquire about the program and indeed very excited about KMBI’s Individual Microenterprise Program.
Hunting Your... From p.14 as a gift from the Holy Spirit. You can also study some books about spiritual gift to validate your gifts. You can also ask other people about your self observations and don’t forget to ask the Almighty God for confirmation of the gift. Let Go of Fears - Having these spiritual gifts, especially the supernatural ones are really intimidating for some, but you have to let go of your fears and exercise your gift to serve and glorify the Lord. What’s really frightening for this is when people start to use their gift in the wrong way. Let go of your fears but do not let your gifts manipulate you. Practice - Practice your gift(s) and get involved in ministry. By doing that, you will also discover your true passion. If you believe that your gift is “Helps,” then go and help people in your ministry, or work somewhere where your help is greatly needed. You would feel great fulfilment in doing so. Discovering your spiritual gift is really important but it should not end by simply discovering it, you should practise it. There are people out there who are less of natural gift but they become better than those who are naturally gifted because they have determination. So, as determined Christians, we are encouraging you to explore your spiritual gifts, learn God’s Word, and practise. Project Update Energizing the Agricultural Sector of Koronadal, South Cotabato
Koronadal farmer partners threshing harvested rice crops.
The prototype test of KMBI’s Agricultural Microfinance Program benefited a total of 17 clients for the cropping period of November 2010 to March 2011. Communities reached are Barangays Carpenters Hill and Sarabia of Koronadal City, South Cotabato. Farmer partners enjoyed the program package of financial and technical assistance intended to stimulate change in their way of life. Realizing that KMBI cannot do development work on its own, networks are built with the Koronadal City Agriculture Office and Philippine Crop Insurance Corporation (PCIC) Regional Office XI. Emelita Miguel, Eric Miguel and agricultural technicians of Koronadal contributed through trainings on organic agriculture and onsite technical assistance; while the PCIC team

led by Bonifacio Pales provided information on benefits of crop insurance and conduct of damage assessment to affected farms. Despite the challenge of pests and calamities, the program has a 100% repayment rate for the loans provided to the partners. 82% of farmers were benefited with claims for indemnity from PCIC because of the damages caused by rats and lodging. The amount awarded to each farmer is estimated at 17% of their production cost. Through feedback, farmer partners disclosed that they are happy to have the access to alternative rice production financing with lower interest rates. They all had the liberty to choose which trader to sell their produce. Comparing with market prices from the previous harvest, farmers’ sales showed a 10% increase on price per kilo. Eighteen farmers continued with the AgriMF Program for the April cropping schedule; of whom four applied for expansion and was awarded with loan increases. During a consultation meeting, farmer partners were challenged to do more for their family, for their community, and for their sector. Currently, they are undergoing a series of strategic planning workshops to rise up to that need.
