Butterfield & Vallis has been a Bermudian fixture for over 85 years. The business started when Mr. Harry St. George Butterfield signed an agreement with a biscuit manufacturer in the United Kingdom for the promotion and sale of their products in Bermuda. By 1923, the company signed other agency agreements, and Butterfield & Co. Ltd. was established. This was the beginning of what’s become one the largest food wholesale distributors on the island. In 1993, Butterfield & Co. Ltd. merged with J.S. Vallis & Co. Ltd. – becoming Butterfield & Vallis. The women of Butterfield & Vallis are considered to be the heart of the company. The Butterfield family have chosen to show their gratitude by highlighting six of their staff members. These women exemplify the company’s commitment to customer service and workplace excellence. “We appreciate the huge contribution the ‘Butterfield & Vallis’ women make each day and we want to celebrate them! I believe we have a vibrant work environment which, among many other things, the ladies help create and sustain. Our ladies are awesome!” —Mr. Spencer Butterfield, President and COO

“I’d like to thank Jim and Spencer Butterfield, as well as Melandy, for the opportunities they have given me. Hard work and dedication doesn’t go unnoticed at Butterfield & Vallis.”
— Adrene Smith
MS. SMITH IS the Supervisor for Direct Store Delivery Sales. She started with the company nine years ago driving a combo truck, selling chips and chocolate to the smaller stores in the Central and East end of the island. Ms. Smith’s favourite part of her job is building and maintaining relationships with customers, and within the company. She was pleased when she was asked to be a supervisor. “I’m grateful for the help I’ve had along the way. I wouldn’t be able to fulfil my role without the inspiration of my previous supervisor Elvera. She’s amazing to work with. Her efficiency, productivity and work ethic are motivating.” Ms. Smith says she appreciates the opportunities she’s had. “The company treats me, and the staff, well. I’m happy to work here. I learn something new every day.” She’d like to thank Carlos and the DSD team. “This new position gives me insight into the behind the scenes work that’s involved in making the team run smoothly and productively - things I wasn’t exposed to as a merchandiser.” Although she no longer drives a combo truck, Ms. Smith says if someone is out, she’s happy to jump back in a truck and see her clients! Outside of work, Ms. Smith enjoys reading and walking. She does the Middle to End Walk, and helps with the Lindo’s to Lindo’s Walk and Relay for Life. A mother of three, with two grandchildren, she says the best advice she’s received is from her mother who said “Treat people how you want to be treated.”

MS. RICHARDSON IS a Sales Assistant at Butterfield & Vallis. She has worked for the company for 17 years starting in 2000 as a Front Counter Sales Assistant. Within six months, she was encouraged by management to move up and she took that opportunity. Ms. Richardson says the best part about her day is dealing with customers. “I like people to leave with a smile on their face. That’s when I know I’ve done my job.” Ms. Richardson credits her longevity at the company with being willing to go the extra mile. “If someone asks you to do something don’t say ‘it’s not my job’ because down the road that person could choose you for advancement. When you’re asked to do something, it’s because they see potential in you – so carry that.” Ms. Richardson recommends taking opportunities when they arise, and to remember that no matter what your job is, you are important. “Everyone has an integral position in the company.” Over the years she’s seen an increase of female Sales Associates. “When I started out there were three of us. Now we have a lot more women out there doing our thing!” Outside of work, Ms. Richardson enjoys walking and listening to music. She is a family person who begins each day with a ‘wake-up’ call from her granddaughter. “My phone ‘pings’ and I know it’s her!” She finds daily inspiration in her family and says her daughter keeps her motivated. “She tells me ‘stop stressing’, don’t take it on. Do you Mom!”

support to the Divisional Controller, critical IT Helpdesk support and project based work for the division. She credits her longevity to the Butterfield family. “They are absolutely wonderful to work for. They encourage the staff and supported me 100 % in going back to school. They want to advance staff in-house. If they see you have the initiative, they will encourage you.” Ms. Perry stresses the importance of learning. She’s currently taking an on-line course in information technology. In her 28 years at Butterfield & Vallis, Ms. Perry says she’s seen the company change from a more male dominated office to one where there are more women. She praises management for their staff involvement - wellness initiatives, monthly walks. Staff members were also offered the team building opportunity of sailing on the Spirit of Bermuda. “It was the most wonderful experience. I would do it again!” Ms. Perry says management doesn’t have to do these things, it’s done to show staff their appreciation. In her spare time Ms. Perry enjoys walking and dabbling in arts & crafts. She’s also a member of the Altrusa International Club, Bermuda.

She also stresses the importance of developing inter-personal skills, saying that the ability to work with others, to listen and understand the needs of your internal and external customer, cannot be over empathized. In her spare time, Ms. Badger-Purvey enjoys walking, reading, gardening, and spending time with her family.
“Take pride in what you do. Let the quality of your work be your signature. Everything you do is a reflection of you.” MISS IBLE RECENTLY celebrated 5 years with Butterfield & Vallis. She joined the team as a Receptionist and now works as an Administrative Assistant and Customer Service in the NonFood Department. Miss Ible says she’s proud to work for the company, and is thankful for the opportunity to work with a successful team of professionals. “The owners go above and beyond. They invest in us and in our working environment. They ensure we have the proper resources to succeed.” She says she’s grateful for the women she works with who have become positive role models, mentoring her and helping her grow. She advises other young people to listen to advice, “Be open to feedback and criticism. It can help you learn. Always be willing and open-minded to change and take advantage of opportunities. Butterfield & Vallis is an innovative company, always evolving to exceed industry standards. As staff we have to be willing to move with the pace. They are the gold standard!” Outside of work, Miss Ible enjoys reading, photography, family time, and exploring new foods. She finds daily inspiration in her daughter. “She pushes me to be my best. FRANCESCA ANGELI
Miss Angeli is new to the company. She’s been working there for the past 8 months. She recently graduated from Edge Hill University in Ormskirk, Liverpool, with a degree in marketing and public relations. Miss Angeli works in Customer Service

She maintains the on-line ordering platform for Chefs, and she’s assisting with the ‘mega yacht’ orders for the America’s Cup. Miss Angeli says “I’m fortunate to have found a job, doing something I enjoy, with such a respected Bermudian company.” She credits her professionalism to her mother’s advice. “My mom has helped me so much over the years and given me a plethora of advice.” Miss Angeli feels her father’s work tenet is one of the most inspiring things in her life. “My father taught me my work ethic. He’s worked hard for what he’s accomplished. This has shown me that you can work hard and work your way up.” In her free time Miss Angeli likes walking on the beach and spending time with her family.

SELF-DIRECTED
INVESTING Women are doing it for themselves! BY KIMBERLY GIBSON
t’s not so long ago that access to the stock market was limited to setting up an account with a full-service broker but never actually being in control of your money. Moreover, living in Bermuda meant further complications with local brokerages being prohibitively expensive or only catering to high net worth individuals. Many Bermudians would try and opt for an overseas option with limited success only to find that changes in global regulations meant many onshore firms will simply not entertain clients from outside of the US. As with many industries, technology has completely changed the landscape and access to international stock markets is now well within everyone’s reach - including those in Bermuda. And while investing in the stock market has traditionally been a male-dominated pursuit, today women are challenging the old with some great success as self-directed investors. A self-directed investor is an individual who wants full control over their investments and is comfortable making investment decisions and managing their own portfolio. Women today are joining these ranks and the internet has made us more independent than ever before. Tasks that used to be only possible through personal interaction, such as banking, shopping, or communication in general, can now be done online and at our convenience. Online brokerages like Clarien iTrade bring the same convenience and personal control to investing. Further, the rise of women as an important class of investors is a logical development. The number of women that are the primary financial decision maker in their family is on the rise and there is inspirewomenmag.com

What I am saying is that by having the skills and knowledge to be financially independent you can build a sense of security knowing that should your situation change, you are prepared. ,A great way to build your savings independantly is through contributing into a pension plan, this will help you save for your future. grew up in a family founded on “Tough Love”, independence was taught at a very early age, and relying on oneself and not another was a value my parents instilled. I can still hear the words from my father “ At the end of the day, you are born alone and will die alone and truly the only person you can ever rely on is yourself.” These words may seem harsh, but to be perfectly honest these words have shaped the woman I have become. I am a happy independent woman who can financially stand on my own two feet.

standing on your own
For generations of the past, it was believed that the man should go to work and the woman should quit her job to stay home and take care of the children. The wife would then rely on her husband to provide the necessities. They would talk about being a team but ultimately there was the man of the house who would have the final say. However, in this day and age every woman should be able to provide for themselves and it is more common then not that both spouses are working. I am not saying that all woman need to work, I am just saying that woman should at least have the ability and skills needed to work should their situation change and the need arise. They should have the ability to stand on their own two feet. They should be able to put clothes on their back, food on the table and a roof over their head.

BUSINESS/profile I recognize the contribution of women who came before me. I’m grateful for the path they’ve paved. They’ve demonstrated that there’s nothing in the way of women who, with hard work and dedication, can attain any height to which they aspire.”

s. Keira Petty is an Associate in the Corporate Department of BeesMont Law Limited. She practices in the areas of banking and finance, and general corporate law for international and local clients. Her practice also encompasses the disciplines of insurance, mergers and acquisitions, and aviation. MS. PETTY WAS called to the Bermuda Bar in September 2007 and joined BeesMont in December 2013. Prior to joining the firm, Ms. Petty worked for Mello Jones & Martin (now MJM Ltd) as a Pupil, and later as a Junior Associate in their Corporate Department. A graduate of Warwick Academy, Ms. Petty says she didn’t set out to become a lawyer. “I embarked on a circuitous journey to my law career - I had no plan! I dropped out of Bermuda College and didn’t know what to do with myself.” Ms. Petty says she worked as a Cashier, and Deli Manager, at Harrington Hundreds Grocery Store. She credits the Aguiar family (the owners of Harrington Hundreds) for encouraging her to further her education. “After much soul searching, I attended Humber College in Toronto where I qualified as a Legal Assistant. Then I attended York University where I graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in History.” Time spent at Humber and York laid the foundation for her pursuance of a Law career. “I obtained my postgraduate diploma in Legal Practice and my LL.B. (with Honours) from Cardiff University, Wales.”

Do you think female lawyers face more limitations then men? “Historically, yes. Until the 1950s Bermuda was devoid of female lawyers. In 1953, the late Dame Lois Browne-Evans was admitted to the Bermuda Bar. She became the first female lawyer, then the first female Attorney General. Her achievements inspired other women and gave them the impetus to pursue their professional aspirations. A gradual increase of female lawyers emerged after Dame Lois BrowneEvans. Shirley Simmons and the late Ann Frith Cartwright were the second and third Bermudian female lawyers admitted to the Bermuda Bar, in 1967 and 1970, respectively. These successful women laid the foundation for us. Today there are over 200 female lawyers on a list of approximately 476 practicing attorneys maintained by the Bermuda Bar Association. The heights that these women have risen is indicative of the ability to balance a professional
and personal life, and attain professional success. Women have the challenge of finding the right balance between their professional and personal commitments but, their desire to balance a career and family far outweighs any perceived limitations.” Who inspires you? “There’s a special person in my life who deserves mentioning - my mom. She’s been my inspiration, my rock. I’m indebted to her for unconditional love, support and encouragement. When I think something in life is too challenging, I think of her. She never gave up. After getting divorced, she started over – as a single mom, who put herself through night school, caring for two daughters. She’s my best friend.” Advice for law students? “Research is key. The law is always changing. You have to stay current. You have to love reading & writing. Also, analysis & research are important. Choose an area
of practice which fulfils your aspirations because it’s a life-long commitment. Time management and organization are also essential.” Are you involved with any charitable organizations? “I’m a board member for the Friends of Hospice at Agape House. It’s an organization that I’m passionate about. I find being on the board and helping with fundraising, very rewarding.” Anything else you’d like to share? “I’d like special mention to be made of Mr. Saul Froomkin, OBE, QC and Brenda Lehmann. Mr. Froomkin was my Pupil master. I worked with Brenda for three months for my corporate seat during my pupillage. It’s a privilege and honour to have them accept me as a pupil, and most importantly for imparting invaluable knowledge, unlimited patience and exposing me to stimulating areas of the law. They devoted much of their time and effort to my training.”
BY ALICIA RESNIK
Was it difficult finding a job in this field? “It’s very competitive. It was my good fortune to know Dawna Ferguson, who was the Office Manager of Mello Jones & Martin at that time. I knew Dawna from my years as a swimmer for the Harbour Club and the Bermuda National Squad. She phoned my mom and asked if I wanted a job. This was my first “office job.” I worked there from 1998 to 2006, over summer vacations and school breaks.” Where you encouraged along your path to becoming an attorney? “Many of the Partners, and staff, at MJ&M supported me. Juliana Snelling, a former partner (now a Director at Canterbury Law Limited) wrote a letter of reference for my law school application which I still have a copy of! Her support solidified my commitment to this chosen career. Also, Brenda Lehmann and Sharon Beesley. They worked at MJ&M when I was there. I admire their work ethic and tenacity. They’ve worked overseas in international law firms and are very knowledgeable. I learn from them daily!” inspirewomenmag.com

Lyn’s favourite project to date has been creating the brand for the America’s Cup Endeavour Program. Perhaps unexpectedly, the computer was not her tool of choice for this design, instead she tapped into her more traditional skills and hand-painted the logo. Asked about working for a global organization, Lyn said: “From the beginning, the America’s Cup has felt different. I have to design with more creative uniqueness, often using the basics - pencil, paint and brush to get a concept out. I’ve had to think on my feet, offer solutions and take on more challenges and within this environment, an entrepreneurial spirit is a necessity.” On the other side of the America’s Cup office, Mikaela Pearman is the Marketing and Communications Executive for America’s Cup Bermuda (ACBDA). Her responsibilities include promoting the 35th America’s Cup for the local audience, creating and executing marketing and communications plans, creating social media campaigns and drafting all press material for the ACBDA. Asked about her favourite part of her role, Mikaela said: “This is a tricky one because I truly enjoy my work and don’t consider it a job. I knew when I signed up for this role, it was going to be frantic and I’ve loved every minute. But the best part for me is probably my Minute with Mikaela series. I not only serve

We’ve been working with DanaFarber/Brigham and Women’s Cancer Center on the design, construction and project management of our new radiation therapy facility. Through this affiliation we have a world class facility here in Bermuda. We’ve been working on this project for six years, and to be weeks away is tremendously fulfilling. We couldn’t have achieved this without community and corporate support.” Ms. Tara Curtis, Executive Director of The Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre

HE BERMUDA CANCER AND HEALTH CENTRE (BCHC) is a registered charity that offers diagnostic imaging, and health and cancer education, to the Bermuda community. Formed in 1945 to combat tuberculosis, they now provide early detection and support for cancer and other diseases. BCHC is dedicated to education, and fundraising to support patients who can’t afford access to cancer detection. Ms. Tara Curtis is the Executive Director of BCHC. Originally from New Brunswick, Canada, she’s made Bermuda her home for the past 24 years. She has a Bachelor’s degree in Experimental Physics and a Master’s Degree in Radiation Physics. Her vocation began in Canada. “I’ve had a number of distinct careers. In Canada, I worked for the Pickering Nuclear Generating Station as a Health Physicist. There, I received a significant level of training in the nuclear industry about radiation safety and protection.” In Bermuda, Ms. Curtis taught physics at Bermuda College and Saltus Grammar School. “I thoroughly enjoyed teaching. Having worked in this environment, I felt comfortable transitioning to the Bermuda Electric Light Company, managing their Safety and Training Program.” When the position at BCHC came available, it presented Ms. Curtis with the opportunity of going back to a job that involved radiation on the medical diagnostic imaging side. She’s been with BCHC since 2008.

Have you seen many changes over the years at BCHC? “There have been significant positive changes. We saw the need to provide more community support for breast and prostate cancer detection. In 2013 we introduced a breast and prostate biopsy service. We volunteered and undertook accreditation with the American College of Radiology and we’re designated a ‘Breast Imaging Center of Excellence.’ In 2014 we achieved the Bermuda National Standard Certification. In 2014 we launched the Radiation Therapy Initiative and Relay for Life.” What challenges do you see for BCHC? “We are lucky in terms of community support. The challenge I see is a global one – and that’s the rising cost of health care.” What future goals do you foresee? “By the middle of this year, our radiation therapy facility will be operational! Our future goal is improving the comprehensive delivery of cancer care in Bermuda. In a few months, we’ll be in a position to provide surgery, chemotherapy, and now the third piece of the puzzle in treatment – which is radiation. This has been the missing piece of treatment in Bermuda.”
Bermuda’s First Radiation Treatment Facility. There are three stages to the project: STAGE 1: Construction of our specialised underground facility - underway STAGE 2: Installation of radiation therapy equipment STAGE 3: Patient treatment will begin - Mid-2017 Please call 236-1001 or visit www.chc.bm for more information.

Can you share a health-care tip? “There are many risk factors for cancer. Number one is aging. We have at least 300 cases of cancer diagnosed in Bermuda every year. Approximately 100 people lose their battle to cancer annually. I feel that leading a healthy lifestyle – eating nutritious foods, being active, not smoking, and having a moderate intake of alcohol is important. Lung and skin cancer are the most preventable cancers. So - be sun-smart and don’t smoke.” Any self-care advice for women? “It’s important to focus on a ‘counter-balanced’ lifestyle. What I mean is that, if you’re over doing things in one capacity of your life, such as work, you need to ‘counter-balance’ this with other activities. Do things that give you a different focus, a break from work.” In addition to her career, Ms Curtis is a mother of two – Matthew, 20 and Meghan, 17. She attends, and supports, events to raise funds, and increase cancer awareness. She also enjoys gardening, golfing and scuba diving.

with Q: How can I tell if my numbers are high? A: There are five blood pressure categories:
Category Normal Blood Pressure
By Laura Fitzsimmons, Pharmacist Manager, Collector’s Hill Apothecary Laura Fitzsimmons
Heart & Circulation
Q: What is blood pressure and why is high blood pressure considered dangerous? A: Blood pressure is defined as the force of blood pushing against the blood vessels. High blood pressure (hypertension) occurs when the force rises and consistently remains above normal levels. If not controlled, high blood pressure can cause: • Stroke • Heart Attack • Kidney Disease/Failure • Heart Failure • Vision Loss • Sexual Dysfunction Often dubbed a ‘silent killer’, many people with high blood pressure feel healthy and do not experience symptoms while hypertension is quietly damaging their health. The best prevention from hypertension is to regularly monitor your blood pressure and know your numbers. Q: How do I get checked for high blood pressure? A: Having your blood pressure checked is easy. You can choose to visit your doctor or a pharmacist at The Phoenix Stores. There are self-service blood pressure monitors located at The Phoenix Centre, Clarendon Pharmacy and Warwick Pharmacy for your convenience. During a blood pressure test, a fabric pressure cuff (sphygmomanometer) is placed around the upper arm and manually or electronically inflated. Once inflated, the cuff momentarily prevents blood flow and while air in the cuff is slowly released one is able to measure the heartrate via a stethoscope or from an electronic readout. Q: Do I have to do anything to ensure that I get an accurate blood pressure reading? A: Yes, you can follow these steps to ensure you measure your blood pressure correctly: • Wait at least 30 minutes after smoking, drinking caffeine or performing vigorous activity. • Empty your bladder. • Wear a short sleeved shirt or blouse. • Sit with your back supported and your feet relaxed on the floor at least 5 minutes before checking your pressure. • Remain still and do not talk while your blood pressure is being measured. Q: I understand 120/80 is a normal, but what do blood pressure numbers mean? A: Blood pressure is measured by two numbers: • Systolic blood pressure (the top number) indicates the amount of pressure your blood exerts during heartbeats. • Diastolic blood pressure (the bottom number) indicates the amount of pressure your blood exerts while the heart is resting between beats.
Systolic Pressure (the top number) mm HG

If your blood pressure is normal, keep up the good work and maintain healthy heart habits such as a eating a balanced diet and doing regular exercise. You can also ensure you check your blood pressure at least once a year to ensure it stays within the normal range. If your blood pressure is not normal, wait five minutes and check it again to help determine if you need further assistance. Should a second test result in a similar reading, visit your doctor who will run additional tests. Should your numbers read higher than 180/110 and you are not experiencing symptoms such as chest pain, shortness of breath, back pain, numbness, weakness, a change in vision or difficulty speaking, wait five minutes and check your pressure again. If your pressure remains high visit your physician immediately. If you are experiencing any of the symptoms listed and the reading is above the hypertensive crisis level, dial 911 and seek immediate medical attention. Q: What can I do to prevent or control high blood pressure? A: In many cases, a few lifestyle changes is all that’s required to keep your blood pressure under control. Lifestyle changes include: • Quit smoking and/or chewing tobacco. Ask your doctor/pharmacist for help with quitting. • Maintain a healthy weight. Aim for a body mass index between 18.5 and 24.9. If you are overweight, ask your doctor/pharmacist for help with a weight loss plan. • Be physically active. Aim for 40 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity 3-4 times per week. Physical activity includes any movement that increases your heart rate such as a brisk walk, house and yard work or playing sports. • Reduce sodium (salt) intake. A level of under 1500 mg per day is recommended. Read food labels to choose and prepare foods that are low in sodium or sodium-free. Ask your doctor/ pharmacist about a registered dietician if you need help with a nutrition plan. • Limit alcohol. Drink no more than 1-2 alcoholic beverages per day. Q: What else can I do to take control of my blood pressure? A: A few factors to consider when taking an active role in maintaining your blood pressure are: • When you have your blood pressure checked, be sure to record the results and discuss them with your doctor/pharmacist for clarity and advice if necessary. • Should your doctor prescribe drugs to help lower your blood pressure, ensure it is taken as directed. Do not discontinue use or take a higher or lower dose unless instructed to do so by your doctor. • Monitor your blood pressure yourself regularly at home. Explore the wide range of blood pressure monitors available at The Phoenix Stores and look at the new iHealth range at Clarendon Pharmacy that allows you to record and track results via any mobile device.
At The Phoenix Stores, we are always ready to answer any questions or concerns regarding your health and wellness so feel free to call in and speak to any of our pharmacists.

eing a naturopathic doctor is the fulfillment of a lifelong desire to heal. My mother was a nurse and I looked on with pride as she got dressed in her starched white uniform, stockings, shoes and cap. She looked like someone very special. I discovered plant medicine during summers spent on my grandparents’ farm where I picked sage leaves for afternoon tea. I veered from that dream and pursued a corporate career which was lucrative and satisfying but eventually my childhood calling resurfaced and I embarked on 5 years of post-graduate study in medicine. I was over 50 at the time.

The greatest strength of naturopathy is using diet, nutrition and lifestyle to unlock the body’s natural healing potential. It works miraculously! Often I am a patient’s last resort to find relief or to minimize their use of chemical medications. They are surprised to see that simple changes can make such a tremendous difference. I also write, lecture, teach cooking classes, lead discussion groups and perform community outreach. I am currently developing a certificated natural health course and working on my first book. My career is extremely fulfilling. I’ve come a long way from humble beginnings. Who’d believe that a shy child from a working class family would one day appear in magazines and have public speaking roles? In addition to my involvement in healthcare I am an entrepreneur with ongoing ventures in tourism, fashion and health. Being open to life’s experiences has led me to this place but I always stress that my attendance at a culturally diverse university broadened my worldview and exposed me to the limitless possibilities in life. This is why I advocate that college is much more than career preparation, it allows for expansion of the human mind, deeper understanding of the world, and overall development of the whole person. A college degree is not for everyone but I wish that all young people could do at least 2 years of basic higher education in the arts, physical science and the social sciences. By participating in school organizations I learned to lead, that leadership means being vulnerable and taking risks, and that leadership is a calling that cannot be silenced. My advice? Don’t focus on your weaknesses, focus on your strengths. No one is perfect but everyone can perfect the skills they have. of caring for
AS WOMEN IN TODAY’S busy world, taking care of ‘YOU’ can be very challenging. We face a multitude of everchanging needs and pressures, ranging from helping our children with their school work to meeting work demands or caring for our elderly parents. Since the 1950s, we have been promised that the many new technological innovations would make our lives easier, Beware the effects of Multi-tasking faster and simpler. Yet, we seem to Most of us have resorted to the art of multi-tasking to have no more ‘free’ or leisurely time complete the multitude of tasks that face us and create more space/time for ourselves. Human multitasking is an today than we did decades ago. This apparent human ability to perform more than one task disease of being ‘busy’ or ‘rarely at or activity at the same time. If you are the head of your ease’ is spiritually and physically de- household (i.e. you are responsible for someone other yourself), the odds are that you are a serious multistructive to our health and wellbeing. than tasker. Although it is performing at our best and enjoying your commonly said that women may be slightly better multilife to the fullest. taskers than men, this leads to undesirable consequences
YOU!
So what can we do reduce the busyness and increase our ability to enjoy life?
as we tend to lack self-focus and do a poor job of taking care of ourselves. Research has also shown that multitasking can result in time wasted due to human context switching and also more errors due to insufficient attention. This can actually backfire and rob of us the precious time and space we are seeking to create for ourselves.
The research is very clear – sleep is precious and powerful! We are better able to help ourselves and those around us when we get enough sleep. But if you look around you, you will notice that many women are sleep-deprived. Women need nine hours of sleep per day, yet average around six hours and 40 minutes during the work week. Women surprisingly need 20 minutes more sleep than men! Lack of sleep affects brain function in terms of attention, working memory, ability to cope and focus, and even increases appetite. In addition, lack of sleep also leads to a higher risk of a variety of health conditions including high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease (e.g. heart disease and stroke). The ‘busy disease’ manifests itself as stress. The busyness we feel causes anxiety, frustration and a chronic feeling of being overwhelmed. Stress is cumulative and acute. The natural physiological response to stress is the ‘flight or fight’ reflex, which is good for safety and self-care, but is not good if it is a chronic state. This leads to metabolic disorders, cancer, accidents, skin and respiratory disorders, cardiovascular disease, gastrointestinal disorders, menstrual irregularity and musculoskeletal disorders.
Create a Self-care value proposition Our lives are busy and somewhat complicated, but it is important that we find a way, each and every day, to pause, be present with ourselves and be an active part of our families. So why is it important for you to manage your ‘busy-ness’, stress and sleep deprivation? If you are able to manage your stress and increase your sleep, you will be more productive, have lower healthcare costs, less time off, be more present at work and in everything you do, and will generally be happier.
There are a multitude of stress management techniques, however, some very simple things for you to try include: • Saying NO! Remember – just because you are able, doesn’t mean you have to do something. When we feel overwhelmed, one simple way to reduce our stress is to say ‘no’ to things that we can do to reduce our stress. • Make time for ‘YOU’ – Allocate at least 10 minutes a day for YOU. Read a book, play a game, go for a walk, sing or do whatever sounds relaxing to you. Within time you will increase it, but 10 minutes can make the world of difference. • Deep Breathing – Controlled Tempo Breathing can help you relax and can be an immediate response to stress. The steps are: sit or lie down, find a quiet place; close your eyes; bring your awareness to normal diaphragmatic breathing that is effortless and natural; choose and say a three word sentence or saying that is meaningful to you; and now inhale and exhale continuously for two minutes. Give these simple strategies a try. Take care of your most valuable asset…..YOU! Holly Flook, VP Underwriting & Overseas Healthcare and Brenda Dale, AVP, Wellness, BF&M Insurance Group. LiveWell Program
Use these strategies for self-management The National Sleep Foundation maintains that sleep is ‘vital to your well-being, as important as the air you breathe, the water you drink and the food you eat”. There are a number of relatively simple things you can do to improve your sleep, such as: • Building a sleep routine and removing technology. Our brains are built for pattern and repetition, and therefore it is good to build a soothing bedtime routine - take a warm bath with lavender oil, stretch, have a cup of tea, and then read before bed. • Remove technology. Stop watching TV, using computers and phones an hour before bedtime. • Create a cosy bedroom environment. Block outside light with window shades, cover light-emitting electronic devices, and silence your phone. • Keep a worry pad by your bed. If you fret in bed, jot it down. Tell yourself you’ll deal with it the morning. Replace that thought with something you feel grateful about.

Do you keep promises? I bet you do. If you promise your kids a trip to Disney or a friend that you’ll watch her dog or kids you’ll find a way to make it happen come hell or high-water, right? So, when was the last time that you made and kept a promise to take care of yourself a little better, to love yourself just a little more? I THINK THAT it’s high time to make some unbreakable promises to yourself and here are seven that are worth keeping for the long haul. To stop beating yourself up. So, your resolution didn’t last, or you went out and drank too much wine and said something to your spouse that you wish you could take back. Apologize and let it go. The weight will only lift when you choose to forgive yourself and move on. Say sayonara to useless guilt.

To be grateful. Starting or ending your day by writing down just 3 small things that you are grateful for can seriously shift your perspective. and the distorted belief that others lead happier, more successful lives”. It’s easy to look at those who we view as ‘successful’ on social media and to believe that it all happened overnight, that they were lucky, that it all came so easily for them. What we don’t see is all the hard work and struggle that it took to get there. We are all dealing with our own unique set of circumstances and it’s not fair to compare. The value that we offer in this life is so much more than Instagram hearts or Facebook Likes. That you will move your body for just 10 minutes! Even if it means dancing in your undies to your favorite tunes while you brush your teeth, move it...it’s amazing what moving your body will do for your mood. “Moving comes naturally to children,” says Ms. Marcus. During Kinetix classes, she works with her students to provide them with an unwavering belief in themselves. “This strong physical, mental and emotional foundation equips them for life.” Each class is a learning experience - children gain the tools to build, develop and maintain a healthy body and a happy mind. Classes incorporate mat yoga, Aerial yoga silks, and/or gymnastics, age appropriate breathing techniques, healthy nutrition, empowerment techniques and meditation. In addition to teaching classes at Kinetix, Ms. Marcus is one of the first instructors to bring yoga into Bermuda’s school system. This program is offered in public, private and preschools.

indicates that a one-hour class can burn 400-500 calories. Hydrostatic pressure (waters pressure on the body) improves blood circulation and helps decrease water retention which also means that your heart rate is lower than when training at the same intensity on land. Water is 12x more resistant than air and that when exercising in the water, you are working both sides of your muscles, muscles that are rarely used on land are consequently flabby! The attractive thing about a water aerobics class is that no matter what your fitness ability, you can work within your capabilities. To make the workout easier, you’ll use less surface area and less intensity, but if you are looking to burn calories and tone up, you’ll want

remember a friend in university suggested I teach water aerobics and my first thought, was “no way, how boring!” In my early 20s there was definitely a stereotype of who did water aerobics and that it was easy. It wasn’t until several years later when I started teaching water aerobics, and even then, it wasn’t a workout I would do. Then I got into the water with my class one evening and that was the beginning of my love affair with water workouts. Every time I get in that pool and push my limits, I get out feeling like a million dollars. Who knew that the “old lady” exercise class could make my arms ache and breathing labored?! Those “senior” ladies must have been some tough cookies! Water aerobics makes creative use of the natural resistance and buoyancy of the water to provide a low-impact workout that is both fun and effective. Aquatic workouts aim to improve all the components of fitness: muscular endurance and strength, body composition, aerobic capacity, and flexibility or joint mobility, as well as improving neuromuscular coordination. Just about anyone at any age and any fitness level can participate in water aerobics and knowing how to swim is not a requirement. Water aerobics is a fantastic workout that burns calories, strengthens your body and core and helps with blood circulation! What you put into your workout is what you get out of it! Research

to use more surface area by using your palms and accelerating your movements. Core work is used regardless of how hard your work. The water’s resistance forces the exerciser to maintain abdominal stability during all movements. Aquatic dumbbells and noodles are often used additional strength training in the water, which also make the class fun and dynamic. For the deep water fitness, buoyancy belts are often used. These belts help to keep your body buoyant and allow you to focus on drag and resistance as opposed to staying afloat. inspirewomenmag.com

Many people have different reasons for working out in the water: those who are cognizant of how much impact they put on their joints, people who are rehabbing an injury, pregnant mothers, or even just people who want to mix up their routine and challenge themselves in a different way. The water workout provides a low to non-impact workout that will not strain the weight-bearing joints or the back, but at the same time it increases, or at least maintains, bone density! Water workouts are generally safe and usually prescribed for those with low back pain or lower body injuries. However, as with all exercise programs, you must get your doctor’s approval. How do you prepare for a water aerobic class? A supportive swimsuit or clothing is recommended, look for a swimsuit with a built-in bra if good support is a concern. Otherwise, comfort and freedom of movement are the most important factors for both men and women. Footwear is also recommended, but not a requirement. Special shoes for aquatic fitness provide traction under water and offer protection from rough pool bottoms or uneven tiles. Have a bottle of water close by for rehydration and rehydrate frequently! Using sunscreen is a MUST if working out during the day. A protective swim shirt is a good idea to get full coverage and a hat is useful for keeping the sun or rain out of the eyes. inspirewomenmag.com

Choose
the fight to
home birth:
There was a time in Bermuda when Midwifery was a well-respected profession and part of our culture. “Ms. Washington used to come to your home on her pedal bike. She worked as a team with a doctor,” says Ms. Cannonier. “Currently there are no Bermudian Midwives. If you want to have a home birth you have to be prepared to do your research.” Even though it isn’t encouraged in Bermuda, over ninety home births have been planned and organized. Ms. Cannonier pioneered the way to turn this possibility into a reality. She meets with expecting moms to discuss everything involved in the planning of a home birth. Once informed, she connects the clients with a certified Midwife, and a collaborative team is formed between the Midwife and the expectant mom’s on-island care. Ms. Cannonier arranges home visits to plan where the birth will take place and then home birth prenatal education begins. She also liaises with Government departments to arrange the necessarywork permits as there are no resident Bermudian Midwives. “We are a mobile birthing center. We bring everything that a birth center has except for what may be needed in a surgical intervention.” Home birth isn’t for everyone. “You have to be invested in yourself, your birth and the process,” says Ms. Cannonier. “It’s not illegal, it’s simply not supported. Women have been conditioned to not want a home birth. Things are getting better but, it’s going to take a re-education and an unschooling of the traditional thinking that the safest place to birth is in a hospital.” With careful planning, having your baby at home can be a joyous and rewarding experience. Understanding everything involved will help you make an informed choice.

Sophia Cannonier, the Director and founder of the Bermuda Integrative Health Co-Operative Ltd and the Lotus Mind Body Spirit Wellness Centre says she consciously decided to have an unassisted and un-medicated, natural home birth. “My mother gave birth to me at home. She was confident, knowing she was a healthy woman and that giving birth was normal. She passed this gift on to me. I have always respected my mother’s choice. When it was my turn, it was a natural choice. My husband, Michael, supported my decision.” The couple researched and planned it. “There were no Bermudian midwives or even Doulas on the island 12 years ago so we found an experienced mother and asked her to act as my Doula. I interviewed all the Obstetricians and found the most open minded one for my prenatal care.” Ms. Cannonier is proud of her experience but, disappointed and concerned that women aren’t given the opportunity to have a home birth. She set out to change this and continues to do so, one birth at a time. “When you want a home birth you are going against a powerful system. Too much money is invested. No one is willing to ‘hang a shingle’ as a midwife, giving women the option of having their baby in a warm, safe environment.” Ms. Cannonier is a Doula and a certified Midwife Assistant.

YOUR BABY’S BIRTHDAY is also your birthing day. For centuries giving birth at home was considered the norm. By the 1900’s this changed and an increasing number of women went to the hospital to give birth. Times are changing and women are considering their birthing options.
There is a voice inside of you That whispers all day long, “I feel this is right for me, I know that this is wrong.” No teacher, preacher, parent, friend Or wise man can decide What’s right for you--just listen to The voice that speaks inside.
