DESIGN PORTFOLIO

Kaytlyn Meseke

Hello, I’m Kaytlyn Meseke

a Master’s of Interior Architecture student at Kansas State University.

ABOUT ME

Design to me is creating an experience that is meaningful and allows for emotions to transpire. I consider my deep roots and traditions from my small town to be what drives my designs.

My first eye opening experience to design was when I was 12 years old. A general store in the middle of nowhere was repurposed to be an art gallery after being abandoned for 40 years. The ability to take something that was once flourishing and give it a new life to flourish again is very inspiring.

Design also isn’t just about space. Photography is an interest of mine, that I have pursued in my free time. Details, lighting, composotion rules, and emphazing emotions pushes not only my photography, but also my work in studio.

01 HBG DESIGN INTERNSHIP

Spring 2024

During my time at HBG Design, I was assigned a new build casino project in the DD and CD phases. Through this I was exposed to true design deadlines, product specifications, designing as a team, budget, schedules, and reselections. My time was spent primarily on lookin at finish floor plans and cretaing product specification pages of the chosen material palettes. I also assisted with choosing and createing corner guard schedules, tile grouts, and device color schedules. With HBG, I was able to create strong connections with the designers and create everlasting memories with them while learning.

02 FORGET ME NOT MEMORY CARE

Fall 2024

With dementia on the rise in aging populations there is an increased need for homes that can better care for them. Current memory care centers are outdated, lack mindful healthcare design, and aren’t large enough for the demand. Forget Me Not Memory Care, located in Hays, Kansas is bringing a new idea of memory care to an area that often lacks resources. Based on research, this memory care aims to design with well-being, nature, place, and wayfinding in mind. The goal of Forget Me Not Memory Care is to provide spaces focused on residents’ quality of life, incorporate biophilic design strategies and enhance interior and exterior connections, connect residents to each other and back to themselves, and promote independence through careful organization and clear circulation.

03 NEXT ARCHITECTURE

Fall 2023

A neighborhood is defined as a social community with considerable face-to-face interaction among members. At NEXT Architecture, the three sectors are split into three neighborhoods with their respected support spaces. The organization of spaces were set around a social sidewalk to allow users to freely move about their neighborhood.

04 SELECT IMPRESSION

Spring 2023

Select Impression is a camera store and studio in New York City, designed for upcoming photographers to understand the art of photography and how to create it. The spaces are meant for learning and practicing with the built form resembling the essence of a camera.

From the front facade, the depth of view or forcal point to the interior is adjusted in the same way the aperture would adjust, once inside, guests are greeted by the lens over the cash wrap. The cash wrap is the intermediate space between the shift of black and white to RGB along with the shift of retail to the activity spaces.

The LED strip lighting mimics long exposure lighting in photographs caused by the slow shutter speed, highlighting the main retail displays and lens. Finally, the flash, simulating when a photo has been taken, is represnted by the studio spaces. Brightly lit for shadowless environments and the final step before the picture is ready to be processed. Customers come to the store to test out equipment before commiting to the purchase, and they will also be able to appreciate the overlay of camera design in the space.

05 Dynamic Collection

Fall 2023

Donna is a carefree, wildchild with a grounded side of her. The Dynamic collection is a symbol of her. The collection is comprised of a service station, stool, and floor length lamp. The metal allows the form to become less rigid and more malleable. Much like Donna, becoming a mother molded her into the mother she is, but still allows her free and easy mindset to shine. The flowers are a node back to the Mamma Mia movie as they appear often throughout. The service station includes two shelves, a bottle holder, and a making surface. The stool is intended to be a quick rest, with a small cushion for comfort. Finally, the floor length lamp is a downlit and diffused luminaire.

06 ON THE RISE

Spring 2022

The coffee table, On the Rise, is inspired by the emergence of social media marketing. As social media has become more popular, businesses are keying in on how to create their own online presence. This marketing style began to thrive, until COVID-19 hit and the world felt the backlash. Quickly businesses shifted their outlook on how to market to those at home who are spending more time on the internet. Now social media is breaking through the ceiling of marketing everyday with new trends and ideas.

The tabletop serves as a paper like surface that has been puncutred by the main focus: the arrow. As the arrow first hits the surface it only dents it, then drops before breaking through. Rhino, Enscape, CNC, Table Saw, Table Router

07 Study Abroad

Summer 2023 & Summer 2024

Outside of the classroom, I have been appreciative of my opportunity to travel the world. As part of the Interior Architecture cirriculum, two semesters must be spent off campus. This varies from student to student but I chose to do an internship and study abroad to complete my requirements. In the summer of 2023 I traveled to Italy where I was enrolled in a food and wine course and a photography course. In addition to learning the culture of Italy, trips to surrounding famous architectural sites.

Then for summer of 2024, I had the opportunity to travel to South Korea for 2 weeks. This trip was an unbelievable experience to see modern design and taste some of the best food ever. On this trip we were paired with a local university and spent days in between sightseeing with workshops.

08 PHOTOGRAPHY

Pesonal

Again design to me isn’t just about space. Design is creating meaningful experiences and allowing emotions to flow naturally. I strive for all of my design work to do that, along with my photography. My photography captures the natural beauty, whether that be the beauty of the natural location, object, or person.

Photography allows me to use my creativity to further advance my attention to details, understand the effects of lighting, how to compose subjects, and how to capture true emotions in the moment. By focusing my photography on these moments allows for beautiful pictures that will forever hold a memory. That same focus also teaches me how to apply it to my architectural design work.
