DESIGN PORTFOLIO Kaytlyn Meseke

ABOUT ME

Hello, I’m Kaytlyn Meseke a Master’s of Interior Architecture student at Kansas State University. Design to me is creating an experience that is meaningful and allows for emotions to transpire. I consider my deep roots and traditions from my small town to be what drives my designs. My first eye opening experience to design was when I was 12 years old. A general store in the middle of nowhere was repurposed to be an art gallery after being abandoned for 40 years. The ability to take something that was once flourishing and give it a new life to flourish again is very inspiring. Design also isn’t just about space. Photography is an interest of mine, that I have pursued in my free time. Details, lighting, composotion rules, and emphazing emotions pushes not only my photography, but also my work in studio.

Hostess and Administrative Assistant September 2019 - Present The Volland Store is a place for art and community. As a hostess, I open and close the store, greet guests, and sell local art and other retail. For special events, I have the opportunity to serve meals and assist the speaker with their presentation. As an administrative assistant, I work closely with the owner Patty Reece to keep the image and reputation of the small community she has created and quickly expanded. I create posts for our website, run bookings for our Airbnb’s, order retail, and work through events from the very beginning to the end, including working closely with upcoming exhibitors, help throughout their exhibition, and thank them afterwards. I work with excel, word, dropbox, and square to record information.

Central National Bank Human Resources Assistant May 2022 - Present As a human resources assistant, my everyday tasks include scanning and filing paperwork for 300 employees, creating benefit letters, and running errands as needed. As I have become more familiar with the process, I have also assisted in payroll incentives and benefit deductions. With Central, I have seen the behind the scenes of the hiring process, payroll, and benefits.

Involvement International Interior Design Associates (IIDA) Kansas State Chapter Vice President August 2023 - Present My roles as vice president, is to assist the president, help delegate tasks, and bring creative ideas to the team.

01 UNITED WINERY Spring 2022

United Winery is a winery tasting room, meeting and dining facility, and retail space located in Sonoma County, California. It was inspired by the grafting techniques vineyards use to create a unique variety of grapes, joining the tissues of the two plants together so they continue to grow as one. The owners, a three-generation gamily, founded the winery on the importance of joing differnet people together in Sonoma to enjoy a common interest in wine. The winery was designed with a goal of grafting the characteristics of strong bodied wines and light, floral wines together. As visitors move throughout each space they experience the contrasting spaces those with abdundant natural light and softer, rounder forms contrasted against darker, moodier, orthogonal spaces, each socially intimate in their atmosphere. By pushing services towards the exterior, the public spces bloom outwards creating a central exterior space for large social gatherings.

02 SELECT IMPRESSION Spring 2022

Select Impression is a camera store and studio in New York City, designed for upcoming photographers to understand the art of photography and how to create it. The spaces are meant for learning and practicing with the built form resembling the essence of a camera. From the front facade, the depth of view or forcal point to the interior is adjusted in the same way the aperture would adjust, once inside, guests are greeted by the lens over the cash wrap. The cash wrap is the intermediate space between the shift of black and white to RGB along with the shift of retail to the activity spaces. The LED strip lighting mimics long exposure lighting in photographs caused by the slow shutter speed, highlighting the main retail displays and lens. Finally, the flash, simulating when a photo has been taken, is represnted by the studio spaces. Brightly lit for shadowless environments and the final step before the picture is ready to be processed. Customers come to the store to test out equipment before commiting to the purchase, and they will also be able to appreciate the overlay of camera design in the space.

03 MEDLEY COFFEE Fall 2022

Medley Coffee is a partnership coffee shop with the Alzheimer’s Association. The goal of the coffe shop was to encourage people to engage and cherish their memories. Medley Coffee took inspiration from a childhood memory of a family tradition: a mulligan. A mulligan originated in the hobo camps near railroad stations in the early 1900s. Those that participated would each be required to add an item into a large pot to be able to enjoy the final stew. The saying was, “if you don’t put in, you can’t take out.” As a birthday celebration, the Meseke family took the idea and made it their own. The family now hosts a reunion once a year on the family farm. At Medley, the direct circulation is similar to the day of a mulligan. The ordering counter is the center of the shop, symbolizing the large, copper pot for the stew. To enter the coffee shop, guests are right away encouraged to make a purchase, much like adding an item to the stew. After receiving a coffee or pastry, guests are motivated to socialize with those around them. The tables are large groups for people to share stories and enjoy each other’s company. Medley Coffee also has a large section of board games for visitors to enjoy and compete against each other. Other details include, soft orange led lighting creating a glow throughout, a large Flint Hills metal art piece, and materials that would be felt in rural northeast Kansas.

04 ON THE RISE Spring 2022

The coffee table, On the Rise, is inspired by the emergence of social media marketing. As social media has become more popular, businesses are keying in on how to create their own online presence. This marketing style began to thrive, until COVID-19 hit and the world felt the backlash. Quickly businesses shifted their outlook on how to market to those at home who are spending more time on the internet. Now social media is breaking through the ceiling of marketing everyday with new trends and ideas. The tabletop serves as a paper like surface that has been puncutred by the main focus: the arrow. As the arrow first hits the surface it only dents it, then drops before breaking through.

05 PHOTOGRAPHY Personal

Again design to me isn’t just about space. Design is creating meaningful experiences and allowing emotions to flow naturally. I strive for all of my design work to do that, along with my photography. My photography captures the natural beauty, whether that be the beauty of the natural location, object, or person. Photography allows me to use my creativity to further advance my attention to details, understand the effects of lighting, how to compose subjects, and how to capture true emotions in the moment. By focusing my photography on these moments allows for beautiful pictures that will forever hold a memory. That same focus also teaches me how to apply it to my architectural design work.
