KNOG BLINDER–1
S TA N D A R D A smouldering twilight approaches at midday across landscapes of ice and fir trees. It’s sleek and thrilling and I shuttle into the night in a glass and titanium snow-cruiser, dodging escarpments of avalanched rocks. A plateau appears and along the horizon surreal light waves begin to dance. Incredible! In the abundance, millions of mind-blowing bright lights. Gazing up, I wonder where you are and then it shoots from the sky. A star! Falling for me? I go to catch it, this pulsing cherry and it’s hot and blinding. And this is weird to admit, but this Blinder then signals for me to chill out and that we’re moving on, giving the exact coordinates just seconds before my body is hurtled across the Atlantic.

SKULL Leaving the stunning Aurora Borealis, I arrive in a land blooming with monster roses that thrive in the heat. Too bad I’m actually on a deathly ledge above an enormous chasm carved out of the earth over a million years with a treacherous river winding through it. Scared shitless, at least I don’t suffer from vertigo. In the distance there’s dust and it’s a girl on an off-road bike bulleting my way. She’s singing and wears a huge skull and crossbones sombrero, hot pants and a writhing serpent tattoo rising up from her boots up to her ear. Here comes trouble. “Only one life! Fly south for the samba!” The sassy biker sings out, throws me a flashing memento mori – a blinding black skull – and then screams back into the Arizona desert mirage.

HEART There’s a carnival on the streets with young and old shaking their sequins in the summer air. Across the harbour on a mountain, a huge figure welcomes all in a gesture of peace. Looks like Jesus. There’s no way I’m going to find you in this sweet sea of love. To stay focussed I hit a bar called Valentine and order the local brew with a dash of ground guarana. A few sweethearts are downing chilled syrup and a smoky honey is playing acoustically on a crimson velvet stage, sad bastard stuff. A drunken heckler staggers up to the stage, sways and yells, “Play some music to dance to!” The heckler waits for a reaction, pulls a few smooth moves, and then turns to eyeball me, suddenly sober. “You chasin’ Darkness? Better take a life jacket and you’ll need this.” It’s a perfect red heart and it’s glowing and beating like a drum.

CROSSES I roll a dice and move to another hot land with vivid sunsets, wild animals and colourful sounds. Every day I head to the pool, but it’s no ordinary one. The multicoloured spray and thundering noise of the enormous curtain of water below me tops that hardcore punk gig where I nearly lost my hearing. I’m in the scary devil’s pool on the Zambesi River and there’s a 128-metre drop below and only a kooky rock ledge separating me from losing the game. For a moment I wonder whether this thing with you is just a mind game? And then a rush of magnificence is all around, a swarm of butterflies. There must be millions, surreal creatures with golden wings in the shape of crosses. They attach themselves to me, pick me up and then I’m flying – soaring across this spectacular gorge – until I land safe and sound on the other side, in time to see a freak wave take over the pool I was just in. One of the butterflies attaches itself to my hair, stays with me and lights up.

COG After that last incident I’m just glad to be alive so I scrap the thought that perhaps I’m only imagining you. And the views here are breathtaking! I’m coasting along the rim of the earth’s highest mountain, on the Maneater, a ride the locals are still testing and built as a loop in the shape of a mean cat. A universal tracted rear drive kit has transformed my bike into the ultimate all terrain machine, so I’m flying and skiing at the same time. It’s an adrenalin fix to die for! I’m averaging 23 km/hr, amazing considering the climbs and that I’m lugging oxygen and a pack. Just as I’m about to hit the last barrel roll a walker appears, carrying red and orange flags. Damn!! Screaming to a halt I nearly hurl us both over the edge. He chuckles and gently speaks, “You travellers are always in such a hurry. Please have this, it will help you glide safely.” It’s an illuminated shiny cog and it clips on perfectly to my gear, showing me the way back down the mountain before the skies turn to grey.

FLOWER Plunging into the blue I’ve dived into the biggest single structure made by living organisms. Submerged in this silent silken world I feel liberated and light. A massive leatherback floats by and then a tomato clown. They kiss my skin with their movements. And everywhere these alluring flower-like clusters that make me smile. There are elephants and brains and stars and feathers and fans and cauliflowers and nudibranchs. I drift in this underwater garden. What’s more, I’ve let go of the need to find you. This feels good. The current carries me to a coral sea cave and down one of its dark chambers there’s a dazzling flower beaming its sweet tendrils off. I get closer. And then a shadow obstructs my view. Something slimy brushes my leg. Creeped, I get out bigtime, happy to have pocketed the dazzling Blinder from its underwater shelf and when I return to land, it’s still beaming bright. A wonder!

“I’ll be your mirror, reflect what you are.” The Blinder sang it like he could live it. And it wasn’t just the pumping rhythms, but those eyes; they shone. The place was jumping with all the intensity this guy was giving off and the gig lasted well over 2 hours, steadily moving through his celebrated tracks. If you’ve seen him beam you’ll be humming too. Those interchanging modes, the 20 lumens of brightness and light; there is nothing heavy about this guy at 15 grams.

MANUFACTURING:
TECHNOLOGY:
SILICONE RUBBER
LEDS CONSISTENT BRIGHTNESS OUTPUT
This patented technology (original to Knog) provides a robust, waterproof construction. Silicone rubber offers inherent shock resistance and flexibility that allows for seamless integration with handlebars and seat posts of various shapes and sizes.
BIODEGRADABLE AND RECYCLED PACKAGING
5. The light itself will remain on until the Blinder switches itself off and into storage mode.
A biodegradable by-product of sugar cane waste and recyclable PET has been utilised in our packaging.
Storage mode provides the best longevity for your Blinder light. Repeat this procedure every 3 months if the light isn’t being used.
MICROPROCESSOR
MATERIALS UV-Resistant Industrial grade silicone Polycarbonate Housing
Our electronics are designed, programmed and tested in-house. This allows us to provide you with unique flash-pattern designs, handy storage mode and memory on/off functions, unlike any other conventional bike light.
We aim to use the most efficient LEDs. Rather than have LED brightness deteriorate during your ride, we’ve designed the light to get you maximum brightness for up to 90% of the battery burn time for each mode.
BATTERIES LIPO EXPLAINED As with most modern portable electronics such as your cell phone, the use of lithium polymer has taken over the industry. Our choice to use lithium polymer technology reduces the amount of physical landfill you would have used for the lifetime of an equivalent product. Picture it this way, given you treat your light well, Blinder lights will maintain a relatively even run time for 300 chargecycles. This basically means the saving of about 600 AAA Alkaline batteries.

DESIGN AND ENGINEERING LENS-OPTICS DESIGN As a function of the Blinder’s streamlined construction, our engineers created a smooth beam pattern with the lens. This provides a balanced ratio of beam width and distance to safely illuminate you and the path ahead.
BUTTON MEMORY ON/OFF New longer button push-on (0.75sec) prevents the accidental activation of your light. Short presses switch between modes. The light is switched off with a long button push-off (0.5sec).This activates the last-mode memory function. *Note: the memory function is reset to steady every time you recharge the light.

CARE INSTRUCTIONS
LITHIUM POLYMER
MECHANICAL ELEMENTS SILICONE
Lithium polymer, like any battery technology is a source of stored energy. The fact is that like any organic material it will degrade over time. Getting into the habit of putting your light into storage mode simply brings the light to an optimum voltage level suitable for storage. It’s important to note that utilizing the storage mode feature won’t make the light last longer than possible, it will simply make your light last as long as possible.
BATTERY MANAGEMENT DESIGN We have optimised the charging and discharging current control. This feature protects the light from being over-charged or discharged. A built-in low standby current preserves battery capacity when the light is off. All these efforts help to maximise battery life.
One of the biggest complaints of USB rechargeable lights is having to remember to carry additional charging cables. This hindrance is simply eliminated by integrating a hidden plug on the underside of the unit. Designed to be exposed to the elements, the plug is waterproof and will not short out against stainless steel handlebars or seatposts.
CE Certification We undertake a wide variety of accelerated life testing procedures during research and development through to prototype and manufacture. This ensures our products are reliable and ready to face the elements.

BUTTON A gentle push is all it needs: avoid using your nails or sharp objects.
LENS Polycarbonate is tough. But take special care with standard lens models. Their high polish and optics are specially designed to maximize output. So keep them clear from anything that may scuff and damage the front of the domed lens.
USB PLUG This built-in feature means you don’t have to mess around with extra cables to recharge your light. Ensure you wipe the plug clean and dry before inserting into any USB port.

Silicone has its benefits – it stretches and won’t scratch your bike. But with every benefit comes a risk. Make sure to keep your silicone away from sharp edges. It’s also prone to accumulating dust and dirt: a quick wipe with a damp, lint-free cloth or sponge will dislodge any nasties that have been attracted to your Blinder.

KNOG BLINDER 1 FAQ
CHARGING Q. I just bought my light, switched it on and nothing happens. Is my Blinder faulty? A. Recharge the battery to reactivate the light Q. I just bought my Blinder and took it out of the package to use straight away. The red light came on not long after. What’s wrong? A. We ship our Blinders with optimised battery levels to ensure longevity of the product. When you receive your Blinder light, you should charge it first before use. Q. After charging my Blinder, the red light comes on. Is my Blinder faulty? A. No. Simply insert and remove your Blinder into any available USB port to reset the circuit. Repeat several times if necessary. This is the purpose of the reset function.
FIRMWARE RESET Q. My Blinder will not turn on. What do I do? A. The Blinder is driven by firmware. Like any device, occasionally this firmware can crash. To rectify the situation and get your Blinder operating as normal the firmware needs to ‘restart’. To restart the firmware simply insert the Blinder into a USB port for at least 1 minute and remove. (Note: in rare instances you may need to do this a couple of times)
ENVIRONMENTAL Q. What do I do with my Blinder at the end of its life? A. Unfortunately, Blinder batteries cannot be removed or replaced without damaging the entire assembly. Knog is compliant with W.E.E.E & RoHs in the European Union. Contact your local council regarding the recycling and disposing of your Blinder Q. The USB charging plug has exposed track. Will my light short circuit on stainless steel handlebars and seatposts? No, our electronics are protected by design. No risk to short circuiting can result by direct contact to steel handlebars or seatposts
BRIGHTNESS Q. How do you determine Blinder lumen ratings? A. The lumen rating is determined according to the LED part specification sheet. Q. What is the output brightness level of Blinder lights? A. The brightness level will vary within and between modes depending on the design of the flash pattern. Q. Why do you define your lumen rating this way? A. Similar to the way we grade our locks against each other, we also created an easy way of informing customers which lights are brightest. What we’ve done, quite simply is identified our lights by way of the LED specification. While these particular lights are much brighter than any of our silicone models, they are still classified amongst the ‘be seen’ range. Please take this into consideration when making your purchase.
