This project exists to design and create a set of travel luggage using the design language from Vertu luxury cell phones. üect is to understand Vertu’s brand identity and to create products that reflect their design language. The set should include a small, medium, and large bag that work together in both design language and function.

Sketches

After identifying and analyzing Vertu’s design language, competitor research, case research, and human factors, we began to design. We created boards both for design language as well as for image inspiration and sketched from both of them. The boundaries within which we designed are defined below on the actual board that we used for design. We also tried to utilize the same behaviors successful luggage companies were using in an effort to maintain a consistent set of affordances so that users are attracted to our products and they know how to use them without any sort of onboarding or instruction. Using these guidelines, we were prepared to begin sketching.

Case research yielded very little in the way of new innovation or paradigm breaking within form or function. Any exploration of new ideas by existing companies exists only in concepts and no product releases. Tumi is currently the stronest luggage manufacturer for its worth in form and function. Competitors include Swiss Gear, Timbuktu, Jeep, Eagle Creek, Skyway, Travelpro, and more. These companies are among the top ten best selling luggage in the United States.

The final solution is a line of travel cases designed for the affluent, self-sufficient man who needs a durable and attractive product that illustrates his status while meeting his needs for usability as luggage products. The final deliverables include the three models, a display stand including a presentation board and this process book.

My Redesigns takes this market share into account by suggesting that nerf begin selling a version of the Maverick that is geared toward these moders. The beauty of this is that for the most part Nerf would be reducing production cost in this product with these modifications. Since custom paint is probably the most common Nerf mod. The Maverick Custom guns could be sold with the intention of being painted by the consumer, without pigment in the plastic and without being painted. Apart from a great reduction in production cost the plain white guns could be painted with greater ease than the brightly colored guns that Nerf currently offers.

Finally, this doit yourself attitude by these customers allows for a version of The Maverick Custom to be sold unassembled to the consumer, not only do they take the guns apart anyway for paint and mods, but the highest cost in the manufacturing of any product, not just Nerf guns is the manual labor of assembly.

The other aspect of the redesign involves the addition of small catches to the Receiver to keep the many tiny springs held in place when moders open the product for tinkering. In the current Maverick the springs are held in place only by the nesting of the two Receivers. The result is lost springs.
