Pestrol Australia: Best Blog Posts of 2014 Bed Bugs: The Good, The Bad And The Ugly Friday, 12 December 2014

Bed bugs are some of the nastiest pests that could infest your living space. These small, brownish, ovalshaped insects, once introduced into your home will cause lots of sleepless nights, pain and anguish. Although they are not known to carry or transmit any disease, bed bugs can be a real pain -- literally. They may not be able to fly (as they are wingless) but these pesky insects move very quickly on surfaces to avoid detection and stay hidden during the day. Bed bugs are nocturnal parasites. This means that they will stay hidden during the day and only come out at night to feed. Their bite is mostly painless so you might not even know that these pests are sucking your blood as you sleep. Bites may cause itchiness and swelling resulting in reddened weals for some people, while in others they remain 'invisible'. Their presence can be both distressing and highly irritating. Bed bug characteristics. Bed bugs have the following characteristics; they: - are wingless - are about 0.5 mm long - are oval and flat-shaped - are light brown in colour (the colour changes to rust-red once they have fed) - are squat headed - have large antennae - have large mandibles - have a complicated life-cycle with several stages of development -can survive for months without feeding

- die as a result of extreme temperatures.

The Life-cycle Of A Bed Bug After mating, females will lay oval shaped white eggs into cracks and crevices with a single female laying up to 250 eggs in her lifetime. The eggs will hatch in as little as 6 days with the nymphs starting to feed immediately. Immature nymphs will shed their exoskeleton -- a process called moulting-- five times as they mature into adults, and will need to feed before each moult. In a single year, three to four generations of bed bugs can be produced. Immature nymphs can go for months without feeding while adults will survive for a whole year. A bed bug's lives for about a year. Due to their rapid reproduction and relatively long lifespan, a full blown infestation will happen in just a few months if this pest is not identified and dealt with early enough. Bed Bug Hosts Bed bugs live on a strict blood-only diet. They have a preference for human blood, but will also feed from other mammals if need be. They find hosts by detecting their body heat and excessive amounts of carbon dioxide found in the air they expire. Common targets on humans are the arms and shoulders. During feeding, the bugs pierce the victims skin with their proboscis injecting their saliva into the skin which causes skin irritation for some people. Once they have breached the host’s skin, these bugs go on to feed on the victim’s blood for five to ten minutes. Where DO Bed Bugs Hide? Due to their unique body shape, bed bugs are able to hide in a multitude of places. Some of these places include: - Mattresses, especially along the seams - bedding such as blankets and sheets - under the wallpaper - between cracks on furniture, walls and floors - carpets. How Do Bed Bugs Gain Entry Into Your Home? This might be hard to believe, but more often than not it is you who introduces these nasty bugs into your home. This is because bed bugs often hide in clothes and luggage. So once you are exposed to bed bugs while visiting places with high occupant turnover, such as hotels, hostels or motels, the bugs will hide in your stuff and then come out of hiding to invade your house once you place your things down. Signs Of Infestation. Infestation is hard to detect especially in its early stages. It is therefore recommended that you do a thorough inspection every once in a while in the common hiding places, and especially when bites are visible on you or on family members. During inspection, you should check for: - the bugs themselves - blood stains on bedding - dark or rusty spots from excrement

- a sweet musty offensive odour. How To Control An Infestation. The best kind of control is prevention. So always make sure that you isolate your travel luggage when you get home. Make sure you wash all the clothes and bags then dry them at the highest setting on your dryer for at least 15 minutes. High levels of hygiene in the house will also deter infestation. If the bugs have already created their home inside your home, Pestrol has created very effective products that you could use to eliminate these bugs. They include: 1. Possum Control For Your Home Monday, 24 November 2014

The common brush tail possum is found throughout Australia and causes damage to buildings, regenerated forest projects, pine plantations, flowers and fruit trees. This can cause many problems for homeowners too, because possums tend to eat everything in sight including all decorative plants and vegetables, destroying gardens. Possum fur is considered fairly valuable and these small creatures have been extensively hunted for their fur, resulting in them being protected on the mainland of Australia. There is still an annual hunting season in Tasmania and landowners can obtain Crop Protection Permits if they have experienced property damage caused by possums. The populations of possums have been declining in certain regains and this has caused some possums to lose their habitats. On the other hand, the urban possum has adapted to humans and has moved into local neighbourhoods and residences. Possums generally like to live in roofs and under foundations. It is still legal for people to trap possums in order to evict them from their residences. Some areas of Australia require people to obtain permits to trap possums. People simply take the possums to a remote area and then release them into the wild. Live Traps Live traps are a great option, but you had better check to see if you need a permit to trap any possums at your home. Pestrol live traps are large enough to capture a possum and hold it until you can release it. The open size of the trap is 24 cm wide by 66 cm long and 26 cm high. The possum will not be injured when it is captured. These traps are very easy to bait and can be put together very quickly. You do not need to use any fancy tools to put the trap together. Once you capture a possum you can transport it and release it into the wild. There is also some mesh around the area of where the bait is located that prevents the possum from stealing the bait and eluding the trap. The handle is shielded for your protection so that you can carry the trap and not have to worry about being bitten or scratched. The trap arrives in a folded flat condition with the instructions needed to unfold it into a usable position. Cable ties are then cut to allow the trap to expand open. Instructions will show you how to set the trap up and get ready for your first capture. Always ensure that you are permitted to trap possums in your local area before you get started. The best way to ensure that the trap is effective is to place it on a flat surface, bait it beyond the trip plate and use canned pet food. Try to camouflage the trap itself with the use of leaves and twigs around the trap. Check the trap every day in case you have caught a possum, you don’t want it to suffer for an extended period of time in the trap. http://www.pestrol.com.au/possum-trap.html Pestrol Possum Away This humane method of getting rid of possums is highly effective because it does not use chemicals and does not harm the possum. Instead, it deters the creatures from ever setting foot onto your property by emitting a noise that they find uncomfortable. The Pestrol Possum Away repels possums through the use of an ultrasonic sound generated from the unit along with a highly effective an extremely annoying strobe light. The range of sound waves is between 15 kHz and 25 kHz. This device simply plugs in to a wall socket using a 240 v AC transformer that comes with the device. It is safe to use outside because it is completely weather resistant. The device works as far away as 10 metres and emits a high pressure sound which is not audible to humans so it will not bother the average person. What it is effective at doing is scaring off those unwanted pests such as possums. While many ultrasonic devices emit a similar and constant sound, this one has a wide range of sounds that fluctuate so that pests do not become accustomed to the sound of them. This device operates on a continuous basis all day long. You do have the option of making use of the built-in motion sensor which will activate the device if anything moves into its area of coverage. The total

coverage area is 360M2. You can change the settings if you need to control smaller animals such as rodents or birds. There are three mode settings including: Motion Sensor: this is activated when pests are in range and are detected by the device. Continuous Sweep: This mode utilizes a wide range of ultrasonic and sonic frequencies at random intervals. The motion detector does not function on this setting. This is useful to repel a variety of pests. Constant: this setting will activate the sonic noises and the ultrasonic device which will cycle through a wide range of varying intervals. If you use the constant setting the motion detector is automatically deactivated. This useful device can be placed in a variety of locations including in the garden, in a carport, in workshops, under the eaves of your home, around your yard, in a campsite while you are camping, in a barn, on your rooftop, balcony, patio or porch. You can also use the device in a ceiling cavity, in a greenhouse, near a pond or around a food storage area. The control box is completely waterproof and has a remote control. The device is also completely portable and can be powered with the use of four C cell batteries. http://www.pestrol.com.au/pestrol-possum-away.html Possum repelling devices are a great choice because they get rid of possums and you do not have to worry about them creating a toxic environment for pets or for children. It is time to use devices that are safe for your family and for your environment. Do not settle for less, demand the best. Pestrol has the solution ready for you with many devices that can drive away unwanted pests from your home.

Pest Control Queensland Spot Light: The Cane Toad Friday, 11 July 2014

The cane toad is considered an invasive species in Australia because it is not a species that naturally occurs here. The species is native to Central America and South America and was originally introduced to Australia in 1935 when the Bureau of Sugar Experiment Stations attempted to control the Frenchi beetle and the grey backed Cane beetle. These native beetles were damaging sugar cane crops and are difficult to exterminate. Cane toads were bred in captivity and in August 1935 over 102 young toads were released around several areas in northern Queensland include Innisfail, Gordonvale and Cairns. More toads were released around Bundaberg, Ayr, Mackay and Ingham but then the releases ceased for a time due to environmental concerns. The releases resumed after September 1936 with the toads multiplying rapidly over the decades, now numbering more than 200 million. There is no proof that the toads have had any impact on the cane beetle population that they were originally introduced to deal with. These toads have been steadily expanding their range through Queensland and New South Wales in 1978 and the Northern Territory in 1984. The estimated migration of cane toads is about 40 kilometres per year. Pest control is a concern for many local residents because in some areas, these toads are everywhere. Cane toads are large and can weigh as much as 1.8 kg. They are about 15 – 23 cm long and have warty skin. The back and sides of the toad can be olive-brown, yellow, gray or reddish brown with semi white or yellow bellies and dark mottling. They have a round flat body and mid-dorsal stripes. The front feet have no webbing but the back feet are tough with leathery webbing. The cane toad has short legs and a ridged bony head that extends forward from eyes to nose. They have parotid glands behind their eyes that cause their head to have a swollen appearance. The cane toad’s parotid glands are their main defense against predators. The milky secretion that is expelled from these glands is toxic to many species and has an effect on heart function. While this venom is not fatal to humans, the effects can burn the hands and eyes and cause skin irritation. If you reside in Queensland, you probably are well acquainted with the cane toad and its habits. You are likely interested in pest control because you have cane toads near your home. Most people are not bothered by these toads, but others cannot stand the way that they look or the noise that they make. These toads can pose a danger to pets, can deplete the native fauna and can reduce the prey population of natural insectivores in the area. Snake and skink populations decline when cane toads invade an area and cane toads pose a threat to biodiversity. Some native species of birds successfully prey on cane toads by attacking the belly of the toad and avoiding the glands on the back of the head of the toad which produce poison. Some types of frogs have been known to eat the tadpoles and small live young toads without being affected by the toad’s poison. Some snakes have adapted smaller jaws so that they can no longer swallow large cane toads which have more poison than their smaller counterparts. The meat ant is a native species that can successfully eat these toads without being harmed by the toxins in their poison. Most frogs and toads will flee attacking ants, but the cane toad remains in place, expecting that its toxic venom will kill the ants. This may have slowed down the rate of infestation throughout the Northern Territory Many control attempts have been unsuccessful in curtailing the invasion of cane toads. These methods often involve physically trapping toads but these methods tend to capture native species in the process which can lead to further harm to the natural environment. Removing a few cane toads from the environment will not make much difference since the area will be quickly re-invaded. What can you do use for effect pest control in Queensland? Pestrol Snake and Toad Away is a unique product that is not only affordable, but extremely effective. This product is solar-powered and is easy to install. It requires two rechargeable AA batters that have a lifespan of three years. The device sends ultrasonic electrical vibrations through the ground which repels toads naturally.

Flea Control - Best Methods Monday, 7 July 2014

Fleas are generally found on dogs and cats and make their way into our homes by attaching themselves to our pets as hosts. Most adult fleas are about an eighth of an inch long and it can be difficult to see their identifying characteristics clearly, but they are wingless and have prenatal and genal combs. They also have mouthparts that pierce the skin and suck blood meals from hosts. An adult female flea can lay between 20 and 50 eggs each day. These eggs fall from pets and land on a variety of surfaces including bedding or carpet in the environment where the animal lives. These eggs hatch in 2 to 5 days, and result in a flea larvae about 3/16 of an inch long. These larvae have a brown head but lack eyes and legs. They will only develop in areas that are protected and have at least 75% relative humidity and will crawl around for about 15 days feeding on whatever they can find. After this period, they will build a small cocoon to go into the pupa stage and develop into adult fleas. The larvae will develop more rapidly when the temperature is higher. If temperatures are too cool, fleas that are fully developed may remain inside of their cocoon for as long as 12 months. As the weather warms up and movement occurs over top of the cocoon (vacuuming or walking), the flea can be stimulated to emerge from its cocoon. The entire life cycle of the flea occurs over a span of 18 days. Fleas can transmit diseases to humans like rickettsiosis and murinelike typhus. The symptoms of murinelike typhus include chills, headaches, vomiting, rash and fever. Fleabites are easily identified as they have a small central bite spot that is surrounded with a red halo without much swelling. These bites can be itchy if a person has sensitive skin. Some pets suffer with hair loss, very itchy skin, and an allergic reaction. Some adult fleas contain a tapeworm cyst and when pets groom themselves they can ingest those fleas and become infected with tapeworms. It is important to manage the fleas that infest your pet by using a variety of flea control products that are applied topically. These products are usually applied once per month to the back of the pet’s head or neck area. Flea control If you already have an infestation of fleas, it is important to start by treating your pets with a good flea control product. Next, clean up their bedding and use your vacuum to carefully clean up the area where your pet sleeps. Pestrol has a variety of safe, natural and effective products that are aimed at eliminating fleas. Prevention is the best way to control fleas, but if you already have an infestation, it is important to deal with it as best as you can. Start by cleaning areas that are known flea hang outs on a regular basis. Vacuuming is effective for removing larvae and adult fleas from carpets. Try some of Pestrol’s effective flea control products to get rid of fleas in your home. The Pestrol Flea Defence Trap does not use any toxins to eliminate fleas in your home. Instead, this trap device effectively eliminates fleas by catching them in a simple trap. Fleas are attracted out of furniture, carpets and off of floors. Larvae are also caught in the trap reducing the chances of your pets becoming reinfested.

The trap works by giving off a unique lighting when placed in a dark room. Insects are attracted to the trap and then caught on an adhesive sheet. The colour of the lights and their intensity as well as the pattern in which they turn off and on attracts fleas. This compact trap requires four “AA” batteries and can be turned off and put away when it is not in use. Pestrol Ultra is a product that continually kills insects with natural pyrethrins. Best of all, this product is safe around your family and your pets. The Pestrol Ultra has an automatic dispenser that is programmable and requires 2 high quality AA batteries. The unit will release a mist of Pestrol into the

room every 5, 10, 15 or 30 minutes which will move through the interior air and eliminate insects and fleas. This device can provide coverage for 150 square metres or 1500 square feet. Pestrol Orange Guard is a 100% natural crawling insecticide. This product is completely safe around both children and pets and is completely safe for use around food preparation areas, care facilities, hospitals and child care centres. It is ideal for applying to pet bedding to control flea’s infestations. This biodegradable product is manufactured from an edible plant extract and water and is non-hazardous. You do not need to wear gloves when you want to use the product or leave the area while you are using it. The product has a pleasant citrus odour and is sold in recyclable packages so that you can be sure you are being environmentally conscious. This product is made from steam distilled orange peels which works to break down the waxy coating of insects, eventually killing them via suffocation. Pestrol Food Tent – this product is the perfect solution to keep insects away from your food during any outdoor dining experiences. The unit is easy to put together, keeps your food safe from pests and fits over a standard picnic table so that you can enjoy your meal without becoming one. Once you are finished with the food tent you can simply pack it away and it will be ready for the next time you need to use it. If you have fleas in your home, it is important to take proactive measures to eliminate these insects quickly and completely. Pestrol has a wide range of effective products that can help you to do just that. All you will need to do is purchase several products and use them in your home to get great results in a short amount of time.

Wasp Control: The Wasp Trap Thursday, 3 July 2014

At certain times of the year flying insects including yellow jackets, hornets and wasps can become extremely problematic. It can become difficult to sit outdoors and enjoy a meal or to sit outside on a porch and enjoy the nice weather. A wasp trap can be the answer to your problem and is a very simple and inexpensive device. The Pestrol Wasp Trap requires a used softdrink bottle and is easy to assemble using that bottle. The kit includes a bottle tube that is perforated and has two sections, an adaptor cap that sits on the tube and a plastic flower trap for the top. Once you have the kit in hand along with a used bottle, simply fill the bottle with a small amount of full sugar softdrink, sugar water, beer or make your own attractant using 2 cups of fruit juice, 3 tablespoons of sugar, two pieces of raw meat or cat food, water with sugar, sweet vinegar and a little beer or wine.

Once you have filled the bottle with some attractant, it is ready to be hung up nearby. The wasp trap is irresistible to hornets, yellow jackets and wasps. Once these insects get into the trap they cannot escape, and they ultimately die inside of the bottle. The trap should be hung away from the area that you use for sitting outside. The trap works all day, day in and day out and does not “break down. It is a durable item that can be reused as often as you need to use it. When the bottle has filled with dead bugs, you do not have to deal with it at all. Simply unscrew the trap attachment from the top of the bottle, put the original cap for the bottle back on and then throw it away. The bottle can be recycled if you prefer, but you will need to clean it out first by rinsing it and removing all of the dead insects. The wasp trap can be hung from a tree branch or attached to a bracket and is a cost effective way of dealing with the problem of wasps outside.

How to Trap Feral Cats Tuesday, 1 July 2014

Feral cats are a growing problem all over the world. Perhaps you’ve encountered one yourself at some point. Maybe you found a furry feline wandering around your yard, but when you tried to approach it, it scampered away or even hissed at you. Despite their small stature, these creatures do pose a threat to our environment. According to feral.org.au, feral cats often prey upon endangered animals or plant life, contributing to a loss of biodiversity. They also may carry a variety of diseases, further threatening Australian wildlife and our health and safety. Consequently, feral cats have been designated as an invasive species and must be treated as such. By properly trapping and humanely euthanizing these creatures, we do our part to combat this growing problem. The difference between feral cats and strays is simple: Stray cats have cohabitated with humans at some point in their lives, while feral cats have been solely brought up in the wild. While both types of cats may look similar on the surface, they exhibit very different behaviors. Strays are typically more social and may come up to you on their own. They may rub against your legs, meow at you and follow you around, much like any other housecat. Feral cats, on the other hand, are not too fond of humans. They may run away from or show signs of aggression toward people. But if you have the right tools and some patience, you can safely trap a feral cat. If you spot a cat that you suspect is feral, make sure you’re equipped with the proper tools, such as our Feral Cat Trap, should you decide to capture it. You’ll also want to have a pair of industrial-grade gloves and a catching pole, as well as the necessary immunizations to prevent disease. Finally, you’ll need something to bait the cat to lure it in the cage. Things you can use include:    

Catnip Cat urine/soiled cat litter Wool or cotton Meat (chicken, rabbit, tuna, beef, tinned cat food, fish, etc.)

To trap cats, take the following steps: 1. Follow the cat trap’s instructions to properly set up in the problem area. If you have any pets around, make sure they’re safe indoors. It is ideal to set up these traps around nightfall. 2. Place bait inside the trap and additional lures in and around the trap. 3. Check back the following morning to see if you’ve successfully trapped the cat. 4. Make sure the cat you’ve trapped is indeed feral. Check to make sure it doesn’t have a collar. 5. Take the trapped cat to the veterinarian, who can further determine if the cat is feral by scanning for a microchip. Should the cat be deemed feral, the veterinarian will properly euthanize the cat in a humane manner.

Why You Want Ultrasonic Dog Bark Control Monday, 16 June 2014

It can be extremely annoying to listen to a dog bark all day long and all night long. One effective solution is ultrasonic dog bark control. This is an effective device to stop a dog from barking. There are a few different types of collars that you can purchase. Some spray an unpleasant odour like citronella into the dog’s face when it barks. This can deter the dog from barking so much (but some dogs just keep barking until the collar reservoir is drained). Some collars will zap the dog with a harmless electrical shock when the dog barks. Dogs that bark constantly can be a serious nuisance not only for you but for your neighbours. The last thing that you want is to have complaints about your dog barking, because in certain cities this can lead to fines and eventual removal of the dog from your home. Ultrasonic dog bark control collars have a variety of specifications including range and options. If you are going to be home during your training sessions, you can use a collar with a short range and a remote option. This allows you to watch your dog and when the dog starts to bark you can immediately activate the collar by pressing the remote button. This will immediately stop the dog from barking and correct the behaviour. Each time the dog barks the collar will provide a correction, either manually from the owner with a remote or by sensitivity in the collar. Most dogs do not need much training to learn that barking means that they will receive the electrical zap which will deter them from barking. If you plan to use an ultrasonic dog bark control when you are not home, your dog will likely learn just as quickly that barking is not acceptable. You may need to ensure that you have fresh batteries on hand so that they can be changed out as soon as they are dead. Dogs tend to bark in a series of chain reactions. Once one dog is barking then most dogs nearby will also start to bark and this can become annoying. When you use a bark control collar, you will quickly teach your dog that you do not want him or her to bark. Once a dog becomes a nuisance barker, this can be a difficult habit to break. Using a bark collar can break that habit and teach your dog that it is not acceptable to bark incessantly.

Bird Netting - An Excellent Bird Control Option Thursday, 12 June 2014

Bird netting is a great way to restrict access to an area, specifically so that birds and even small insects can't get through. Birds are considered pests and they can be especially troublesome when they build nests in your roof, gutters, fences, or other hazardous areas. Many homeowners have even had bird nests within the walls of their home. Every year homeowners continue spending hundreds of thousands of dollars paying for cleanup and repair services thanks to the work done by pest birds. On a more frightening note, birds are known to carry over 60 transmittable diseases and having these pests within your home is very ill-advised. There are concerns for sanitation and health, which could lead to a lawsuit if the birds happened to cause an accident. Often, business owners are forced to install bird netting because of the continuous problems that these pests cause with their customers. Bird faeces and debris also creates a very bad image for the home, business, or complex. Where can bird netting be used? Bird netting is highly versatile and it can be installed anywhere that you are capable of accessing. The netting will simply need to be anchored down in various locations so that it's positioned overhead, but high enough to not be a distraction. Common places include rooftops - to restrict access from above, in backyards, warehouses, overhangs, and enclosed areas. Netting is one of the best bird control solutions available. Since birds are capable of flying around and bypassing virtually everything else, a net is the only solution that remains cost-effective and easy to install. Bird netting will completely eliminate the presence of birds and will be a long-term solution to the issue. If you're having a difficult time keeping these pests away, it's important that you act quickly before the problem escalates into something more serious. Birds can reproduce at a rapid rate and begin to cause issues quickly. What colours does bird netting come in? Bird netting is available in many colours including stone grey, black, and white as the most common. The netting that you choose is entirely up to you as the colour will not change its effectiveness, only its appearance. You should try to choose a colour that blends well with the environment and won't serve as a distraction. Generally, black bird netting is ideal because it's difficult to see unless you look closely. How is bird netting installed? Bird netting can be installed differently depending on the environment and the architecture around it. Commercial bird netting installations are typically more difficult than installing bird netting at a home. The roof and other areas of the home can be used to anchor the net, but commercial settings generally don't have a roof overhead with such easy access. Lifts and power equipment may be necessary in these scenarios. Bird netting is sometimes used in gardens to protect fruits and vegetables from birds, which commonly swoop down to feast and then fly away again. You typically don't have to hang the bird netting above the plants, you can simply rest it on top and this will work just as effectively. The birds are not able to eat the fruits or vegetables through a netting and will get discouraged and fly away. However, if you'd prefer not to have to remove the netting every time you want to access the garden, then an overhead netting is the better option for you. This would allow you to walk freely through the garden. It's important to protect your fruit trees and edible plants as fruits and vegetables can be very expensive in grocery stores today. Why are birds such a problem? If you're still wondering what the big deal is with having a few birds overhead, the main issue is in sanitation and health hazards. Birds are known scavengers and will eat just about anything. Not to mention, bird faeces can come from any direction with their overhead flight patterns. Keeping birds away

during an event or out of an enclosed area can be important. Bird netting is one of the only options that remains difficult to be seen, is affordable and works 100% perfectly. Take a look at our bird netting options: http://www.pestrol.com.au/birds/bird-netting.html

Why Spider Catchers are Great! Wednesday, 28 May 2014

For many people a spider is a horrifying insect that makes their flesh crawl. The thought of picking up a spider, touching it or otherwise having to deal with it makes them nauseous. What is worse is having to crush a spider under foot or with a shoe or to chase it with a rolled up newspaper. Sometimes the spider gets away and you have no idea where it has disappeared to, which is often even more horrifying than having to deal with the spider in the first place. The spider catcher is a fantastic invention that facilitates the capture and disposal of spiders that seem to invade your home from every corner. This device is a long pole so that you do not need to actually come into contact with the spider. The length of the pole ensures that you never come anywhere near the spider because it ensures that you are a safe distance away. On the end of the spider catcher is a small brush like bristle pack. When you see a spider, you simple press the handle and the bristles will open up. You quickly place the spider catcher over the spider and release the handle which then captures the spider easily and quickly within its brush pack. A spider’s first reaction is to curl up into a ball, so it is hopelessly captured inside of the brush pack until you are ready to release it. No one loves to kill things, and even if you are a total spider hater, it just seems wrong to kill them with a shoe or a newspaper. When you use the spider catcher you do not have to kill the spider, you simply capture the spider on the run and then release it safely outside of your home. In the process of using the spider catcher device you did not have to touch the spider, come into contact with it or any part of its body or areas that it has contaminated. What you do is capture the spider and dispose of it without having to harm the spider, injure it or put yourself at risk. Many people find that they need to climb up on furniture and put themselves into precarious positions where they might fall down and harm themselves. With the spider catcher you automatically have an extended reach that can grab a spider from its hidey hole and allow you to put it outside far away from your home where it can get on with its life. You can rest with the knowledge that your home is now spider free and you do not have to deal with that nasty hairy spider or any of its relatives because you successfully evicted it using your spider catcher. Once you start using a spider catcher you will find that it is also extremely useful for a variety of other insects including cockroaches and moths. This device is extremely affordable and makes a great gift. Check it out: http://www.pestrol.com.au/spider-catcher.html After all, why would you want your friends and family to suffer with spiders when they can easily get rid of them using this handy and convenient little device?

Ant Control - Best Methods Thursday, 22 May 2014

Ants live in colonies and have a large social network. Ants are an important part of the ecosystem in their natural environment, as scavengers and predators and they add important nutrients to the soil through recycling. Unfortunately they are not so welcome in gardens and homes across the country and can become problematic. Ant colonies are an active super cell that can grow to an extremely large size in a short amount of time. An ant colony has its own infrastructure including a queen, the worker ants and the soldier ants. The queen is in control of the colony and lays all of the eggs. The worker ants take care of the eggs as well as the cleaning and maintenance of the nest. They also do all of the foraging for food. It is the job of the soldier ants to protect the colony. Worker ants travel some fairly long distances from the nest when they are foraging. As they travel from the nest they leave chemical secretions along the pathways that they travel. These pheromones are a communication tool and they use it to communicate food sources. Once a food source has been discovered, a large number of worker ants will start to multiply. Adult ants feed on liquids that are transported to the nest internally in other ants. Once worker ants find a food source, they consume it and return to the nest to regurgitate it. This food is shared or stored and any solid food materials collected by workers are fed to the growing and developing larvae. Every different ant species eats a different type of food. Some eat other insects or feed on meat or fat. Some prefer sweet foods like nectar or fruit and others eat just about anything they can find. When you know what kind of ant infestation you are dealing with, one very efficient way of achieving ant control is to remove a known food source. In their natural environment many ant species will nest in decayed timber, in the soil and in amongst rocks. Larger nests have interconnecting chambers and tunnels under the surface of the ground. There are also several entrances to the nest which can often be recognized by a distinct mount around the hole. There are certain types of ant species that sting or bite any intruders. How do you know if you have an ant problem? Ants leave small signs everywhere that they are present. The most notable signs are the small mounds around their entrance holes. You may also notice small piles of material that is gritty and is found around window frames, trim and doors. This material includes wood fragments, fibres, dust and faecal pellets that are produced by ants. If you notice any of this type of dirt or debris, you will want to check out ant control products. Ant Control - Best Methods Orange Guard – this product is completely natural, biodegradable and safe to use on all surfaces, even where you would be preparing food or around children. It is safe for sensitive facilities like hospitals and care centres. Orange Guard is manufactured using water and edible plant extract. This product is AVPMA registered, features packaging that can be recycled and has a pleasant citrus smell. The active ingredient (d-limonene) is a produced from orange peels through a special steam distillation process. It breaks down the exoskeleton of insects which suffocates them.

Pestrol Ultra – this is an automatic insect eradicator that includes natural pyrethrins. It is completely safe to use around family and pets.

Either of these products are a good alternative to many of the toxic chemicals and poisons that are commonly used for ant control. Consider your family and your environment and try Pestrol’s line of effective products that can rid you of your ant problem once and for all.

Cockroach control - best methods Tuesday, 20 May 2014

It is believed that cockroaches spread a range of disease-producing organisms that can harm humans including streptococcus, salmonella and staphylococcus. These insects prefer to live in a warm and humid climate with easy access to food. Many people feel as though they need to hire a professional to deal with cockroach control, but you can easily treat an infestation on your own when you have access to the right products. Cockroaches eat a wide range of foods including rotting garbage and this is how they spread disease. They also can cause some severe allergic reactions. The cockroach will eat just about anything it can find including food and faecal matter. Any bacteria that the cockroach ingests can survive in its digestive system for months or years and is reintroduced to the environment when it is passed out of the cockroach’s body through droppings. Food can be contaminated by cockroaches when they vomit on it and defecate on it and humans consuming this food can become ill from the bacteria. Cockroaches have long antennae, six legs, are very fast moving, have wings and a flat, low lying body that can squeeze through extremely small spaces. The most common types of cockroaches found in Australia are the American cockroach which is large and black, the Oriental cockroach which is medium sized and can be dark brown or black and the German cockroach which is smaller and brown. Female cockroaches can lay between 10 and 40 eggs at once and will produce over 30 batches of eggs during their lifetime of around 12 months. Do you have cockroaches? Cockroaches are often found in areas where food is kept or prepared. They tend to live off of food spills and need access to water. You may find them in your kitchen cupboards, under the sink, behind the fridge, under newspapers or cardboard and around your water heater. What can you do for cockroach control? If you have cockroaches, be sure to keep your house clean, especially in the kitchen area and where the food is prepared. Clean under your fridge and stove, moving those appliances out from the wall and picking up all food debris. If you spill anything on the floor, clean it up right away. Remove any water sources by making sure that dripping taps are turned off and water that collects in containers is dumped out. It is a good idea to store food in a sealed container if you have open food in kitchen cupboards. Effective Cockroach Control Methods From Pestrol http://www.pestrol.com.au/insects/indoor-insect-control/cockroaches.html Pestrol Cockroach Pads are glue traps made out of cardboard that trap cockroaches inside and come in packages of four. These traps are perfect for coaxing cockroaches out of hiding around your home. These traps can be placed in the path of an area where you know the cockroaches are living. They will need to walk through these traps to get to a food source or water. Since cockroach eggs can be dormant for up to six months, you can keep these traps in place to eradicate cockroaches now and in the future. These glue traps contain all natural ingredients and can simply be thrown away when they are full. Each trap can last between 10 – 20 days.

Pestrol Orange Guard is a natural product that works with d-limonene as an active ingredient to break down an insect’s waxy outer coating. This is an effective method of cockroach control.

Pestrol Ultra is an automatic insect killer that contains natural pyrethrins. It is continuously dispensed automatically in a dispenser and is safe to use around the family and pets.

Possum Control - a Growing Problem Tuesday, 6 May 2014

Possum control is a serious issue in Australia, particularly in residential areas where the population seems to have exploded. Possums seem to have very little to worry about when it comes to predators keeping their numbers down. They prefer to take up residence under, around and near homes which can present a variety of problems for home owners. Damage to Native Ecosystems It seems that possums enjoy a wide variety of plants and are selective browsers. This leads to the destruction of certain plant varieties that occur naturally. The result is that this leaves a reduced food supply for native species which can disrupt the entire ecosystem. Possums also feed on the eggs of some native bird species which can seriously affect their ability to reproduce. By eliminating natural vegetation, possums tend to reduce the number of potential nesting sites. Possum control is becoming more serious and urgent because possums are starting to threaten crops intended for human consumption. A family of possums can eradicate crops, decorative garden plants at domestic residences and injury or kill pets. Spread of Diseases By acting as a wild vector (carrier) of bovine tuberculosis (BTb), the potential for widespread infection of domestic cattle and wild deer is increased. Farmers in local areas have to keep a close watch and manage herds to monitor them for disease and infection. Trapping with Poison While many property owners plan to capture possums with traps and poison bait, they often end up trapping native wildlife which can lead to a threat of population reduction for species at risk. Live traps should only be used by people who take proper safety precautions to avoid being bitten or scratched by possums. Many home owners discover that they have a possum problem when they see scat on their outdoor pathways during the day time. Possums can also move towards a residence and eat any food scraps that are left around the home as well as pet food that is left outside where it is readily available. Once a home owner notices that there is a possum problem, they must look into methods of possum control that are the most effective in their situation. Poison is not always the answer because it can also cause injury to domestic animals. And it is not always necessary to contact an expensive pest control company to get rid of possums. There are many methods that a home owner can use to deal with possum control using DIY methods that are much more affordable and a lot less invasive. Most of these methods will not harm the possum or put the residents at risk in any way.

The main objective with possum control is to identify a method that is effective and to use that method to ensure that possums are removed permanently from your residential premises. Always be on the lookout for signs of possums and take immediate steps to eliminate them from your home and yard. The longer these unwanted pests remain, the more damage they will do to your yard, your plants and potentially to your pets.

How And Why Bird Spikes Are The Best Remedy For Bird Pests Tuesday, 18 March 2014

You may have realised by now that bugs are not the only pests around Australian urban and rural homes and businesses. Birds like pigeons set up home in gutters and leave behind ugly droppings that clog drains and gutters. They also transmit human diseases like ornithosis. Starlings may be another problem pest in your area – they arrive in flocks and not only create a cacophony that destroys peace; they also leave behind guano that can play host to harmful fungi. House sparrows are probably one of the biggest nuisances: they enter homes through tiny holes of warehouses and foul up or damage food stores. Chemical treatment is available for bird pests, but those are not humane. You definitely don't want to have to deal with dead birds – it’s just not right. So, why not just prevent the birds from settling in and around your home in the first place? Spikes are great solutions for this. They point upwards and create an uneven surface that the birds find difficult to land on. They don't hurt the birds – they simply drive them away to seek better locations to roost. How To Choose And Install Bird Spikes

Bird spikes are usually very precisely engineered to cleverly protect homes from birds in all situations. You can install them in areas where birds perch in the daytime and where they roost at night. No matter how wide the ledges of your building are, or how narrow a pipe that you want to ban sparrows from entering, you can find bird spikes to fit. Levels of bird infestation:

  

When selecting bird spikes, you should take into account the level of infestation that you're experiencing. It helps to differentiate them as: Light pressure areas, where birds perch occasionally during the day Medium pressure areas, where birds perch habitually during the day Heavy pressure areas, where birds roost or nest at night Dimensions:

Once you've identified these different areas, you have to measure the dimensions of these areas. Consider questions like:  

How long the ledge is – this will help you decide how many spikes you will need How deep the ledge is – to help you choose the model of spikes

You will also need to think about the size of the birds that you want to keep out. If they're small like pigeons, you may need narrower spikes that the birds can't get through. If they're a larger species, large spikes will suffice. Also consider any windows, barriers overhead and other features that can limit the space that the spikes can take up. Material: The material your spikes are made of is also important. Spikes that are made of stainless steel have a high tensile strength: they can't be pushed out of the way or bent out of shape by the birds. Spikes with polycarbonate bases last really long because they are protected from natural cracking and breaking caused by UV rays. Aesthetics: You may be bothered about your home looking like a high security detention centre with spikes all over the ledges. That is usually not a problem with good quality bird spikes. Finally, to make sure that the spikes adhere well, you should clean your ledges and gutters well before the installation. This will make sure the adhesive does its work as it's supposed to do. Check out our range of Pestrol bird spikes.

Possum Control: Background and Methods Saturday, 8 March 2014

Possums are a common household pest and most home owners have had some type of experience with them at some time. These critters are the same approximate size as a house cat and have grey coarse fur, a hairless tail and ears and a face that is rather pointy with a distinctive snout. Possums are marsupials and can hang upside down using their tail to latch on to a tree branch and can reach a weight of about 7kg. They have feet that look similar to hands with five fingers on each paw. Possums are great climbers and have a diverse natural habitat and generally like to take shelter in the abandoned burrow of another animal. They will also take up residence in cavities of trees and under porches, decks and in sheds, attics and garages. You may not see possums around your home because they are largely nocturnal and forage for food at night. They are true omnivores and feed on nuts, green plants, fruits, frogs, birds (and their eggs), snakes, snails, mice, voles and rats. Possum controlusually becomes a necessity when garden vegetables start to disappear and decorative trees and plants are targeted. Possums have lost most of their natural fear of people and have even been known to enter homes through pet doors. Possums are extremely messy eaters, so you may see the evidence of their foraging from the night before, in the morning. Possums have a top speed of about 11 km/h so they have a variety of strategies to evade their enemies. They can enter a burrow or climb a tree to escape attack and when they are threatened they may respond by growling, hissing and baring teeth or spraying a smelly and repulsive musky fluid from their anal glands. The also “play possum by rolling over onto their side, closing their eyes, letting their body go limp and allowing their tongue to hang from their open mouth, making them appear dead. When a possum is in this shock reaction their heartbeat also slows down. Possum Control for Home Owners Home owners need to find ways to deter or get rid of possums because they destroy decorative plants and food gardens. They also defecate on porches, patios and paths and fight with pets which can cause injuries to pets. Possums carry a variety of dangerous and deadly diseases and are also generally infested with lice, mites, ticks and fleas. Possum Control Methods Motion sensor spot lights should be set up around your home and garden. Possums do not like to be trapped under the glare of bright lights and will avoid any areas where there is such lighting. Sensor lights can be installed outside of your home on the porch, deck and any outside shed areas. Trapping possums in live traps is an easy and humane method of effective possum control. Pestrol offers suitable live traps for trapping possums. Traps can be set along obvious paths of travel in the garden or near known burrows. The best bait to use in a live trap is fish flavoured moist cat food (in a tin), but this can also attract neighbourhood cats. If there are a lot of cats in the area, you might try using raw chicken eggs or some bread with peanut butter and jam spread on it. Overripe bananas, grapes and melon are also good bait that is attractive to possums. When you capture a possum in a live trap it is important to deal with it as soon as possible – do not leave a live animal in a trap for longer than a few hours or it will suffer undue stress.

Other Pestrol Possum Control Devices Pestrol Possum Away is an electronic device that emits a sound that is unbearable for possums. They will either avoid your home altogether or move on from any burrow that they have made under your residence as soon as soon as they start to hear this device. Pestrol Possum Away generates ultrasonic sounds and a strobe light with sound waves between 15kHz and 25 kHz. The sound is inaudible to humans, so it will not disturb the home owner or their neighbours. The unit is completely weather resistant and environmentally friendly with a range of up to 10 metres. The sound emitted by Pestrol Possum Away startles possums and scares them away. The sounds are produced through a variable pulse generator so that the sound waves fluctuate which ensures that any nearby animals will not become accustomed to the sound. The device operates on a continual basis and has an optional built in motion sensor so that the device is activated when any animals move into the area of coverage of 24 x 15 metres. The setting can be adjusted for continual use when you need to control smaller pest animals such as birds or rodents. Pestrol Possum Away has three mode settings including: (a) Continuous Sweep – activates a range of frequencies in sonic and ultrasonic at random intervals (motion sensor will be deactivated on this setting) (b) Constant – activates sonic and ultrasonic noises and cycles through them at random intervals (motion sensor not active on this setting) and (c) Motion Sensor which activates sonic and ultrasonic sounds if it detects any pests. The Benefits of Electronic Pest Control Devices Friday, 14 February 2014

Eradicating pests from your environment is important and you should take care of it as soon as you notice that you have an issue. Maybe you have recently noticed chewed wood, paper or small signs of unwanted pests around your home or business. Pests can bring disease and air borne illnesses to you and your family, especially with the trace evidence that they leave behind for you to discover. Whether you are dealing with rats, mice, snakes, possums, fleas, or any other invading creature, most of the time these are unwanted and as a home owner you simply want to get rid of them. Traps. These devices are generally used to trap small rodents and are set out with bait and work capture these pests. Mouse traps are smaller while rat traps are larger and stronger in order accommodate the larger bodies of rats. The spring action of a trap can snap the head or neck of the rodent, killing it instantly. These types traps can be effective at first if an infestation is quite large, but after a while rodents can become wise the traps and begin to avoid them.

The first sign that rodents are avoiding the traps is when the bait is gone and the trap remains set. This means that you will need to find alternate methods to capture those pesky rodents. Most people do not like to clean out rat and mouse traps because they find it disgusting and unsanitary. Sometimes the traps do not kill the rodent and this means that you will have to finish the job which can be horrifying for the average person.

Sticky Paper Traps. These traps are extremely sticky and are set on the floor in areas where rats and mice are known to reside. As the rodents run across the sticky trap they become stuck and cannot move from the spot. The rodents are glued to the spot they land on until they die and then the entire sheet of sticky paper needs to be thrown away. It is obvious why this is not a popular choice for rodent eradication.

Poisons. Tasty irresistible baits are laid out around the area and attract rats and mice or other unwanted creatures. Once the bait is eaten, the animal will die soon afterwards, but may suffer for a long time before they pass away. While this can be an effective way to eradicate pests, many of these animals crawl into hiding places in the interior of a building to die where they die and slowly decompose, creating an unbearable and powerful stench. The methods above have drawbacks and kill the pests. More humane methods for rodents include live traps and electronic pest repellers. Live traps Rodents are attracted to these traps with bait and once they are captured inside of the trap and the trap is full they must be released. It is best to take the entire trap several miles away from your location and release the rodents into the wild where they can establish a new territory. This is a humane way to get rid of unwanted pests, and Pestrol offers a range of options: Mice traps: www.pestrol.com.au/rodents/rodent-traps/mice-traps.html

Pests Around The Home - What to be Aware of Tuesday, 28 January 2014

All countries have their share of “pests” which can take up residence in homes or in gardens and become a serious nuisance. Most of the time these pests are annoying, but they can also pose a health risk or cause people to be concerned for their safety. Australia has its own challenges, but Pestrol has a suitable solution to many common pest problems. We will start by describing the type of pest that people commonly encounter and then talk about Pestrol’s affordable do it yourself pest control solutions: Snakes – there are over 140 species of land snakes in Australia, with many venomous varieties to be found near homes and residential areas. Although snake bites are relatively rare, one should not take chances with the possibility that they might encounter a dangerous snake in the comfort of their own yard. The good news is that snakes are not aggressive and would rather flee than fight. The Pestrol Snake Away is an effective repellent device. It is solar operated and effective to a 30 meter circumference from the location where you place the stake. The stake vibrates and sends out warning sounds to snakes in the area causing snakes to slither away harmlessly, without coming anywhere near your home. These handy snake repellers can be set up in a line to form a barrier around your property line, keeping snakes away from your home and providing your family with reliable protection. These devices are constructed from aluminium and are waterproof. Rodents – mice and rats are opportunists and will take up residence in your home if they find a suitable food source. Easy meals and a warm place to sleep encourage these vermin to move in and start multiplying beyond reason. You may not even notice that you have a problem until you start to see chewed food containers and faecal droppings around your home. Once you see these, you should take action immediately because there are probably dozens of these critters scurrying around in the background already. Pestrol Rodent Free is a repellent device that emits electronic vibrations and sounds that drive rodents away. These come in a variety of sizes and strengths, but the main thing to remember is to turn the device on to ensure it is working. Once mice and rats move in, you will have to remove the existing residents and discourage future critters from moving in. Poison is generally used by many people, but it can be extremely dangerous even in small quantities. Pestrol live rodent traps are a good way to eliminate rodents by trapping them live and in large amounts. You will need to empty the traps a fair distance from your home to prevent these creatures from returning and moving back in. Mosquitos – sitting outside in the warm summer evening is a favourite activity for many. The main problem is that as dusk sets in you may find yourself being “eaten alive” by mosquitos. Aside from being itchy from bites, many diseases are carried by mosquitoes which can be dangerous or fatal. Some of the diseases that are commonly transmitted include Australian encephalitis, Barmah Forest Virus Disease, Malaria, Ross River virus disease and Dengue Fever. There are over 300 different types of mosquito in Australia. Perhaps you simply go inside rather than become a meal for these insects, but it doesn’t have to be this way. Take back your summer evening enjoyment with Pestrol Outdoor Mosquito traps. These traps attract mosquitos, keeping them away from you by emitting carbon dioxide which is what attracts mosquitos to people in the first place. Rabbits, Cats, Dogs, Possums – There really is nothing worse than having a pest animal that continues to come over to your home from a neighbour’s house or from nearby bush. Rabbits can make short work of any type of garden that you have been cultivating while dogs can dig things up and cats can poop in your garden. Possums tend to burrow under your home or move into your attic and can make a lot of extremely loud noise that can be disturbing and annoying, and may keep you awake at night. Pestrol Animal Away is a gentle approach to the problem of unwanted pest animals in your yard. This

device operates on solar energy so it does not require any electricity at all. Simply place the device in a sunny location and it will work to keep those unwanted intruders away from your yard, home and garden. This ultrasonic device is waterproof so it will withstand most types of weather. The device is motion activated so you won’t have to worry about constantly checking to see if the unit is charged and operational. Birds – some birds like to nest in roofs or in any small crevice that they can find within your home. What can you do to keep birds away from your house? One good alternative is to provide small wooden birdhouses a safe distance away from your home, because birds will definitely choose those over your house if they are available. Once birds nest in your home, they will return year after year to raise a new family. What can you do to stop this? Pestrol Electronic Bird Repellers are one way to prevent birds from returning. They will not like the sounds that this device emits and they certainly will not want to raise their family next to this annoying noise. Pestrol Bird Spikes prevent roosting birds from sitting on the top of your home’s roof.
