A Brief History of Shipping Containers
Featured
Cargo containers were first used in the 1950s when they were initially developed for the purpose of commercial shipping. A shipping owner named Malcolm McLean worked closely with an engineer named Keith Tantlinger to develop what we commonly recognise today as shipping containers.... The first intermodal container system was developed and coined Container Express, later shortened to ConEx which became an easily recognizable abbreviation in the United States of America. Malcolm McLean used a converted World War II tanker called the Ideal X on April 26, 1956 to transport 58 metal container boxes and 15,000 tons of bulk petroleum from Port Newark to Houston, Texas. It took six days for the voyage and once the ship arrived in the Port of Houston there were already orders coming in for the ship to take goods back to Port Newark. McLean’s company, Sea-Land Services was soon seeing some competition from the Matson Navigation Company. The ship "Hawaiian Merchant" successfully transported 20 containers from Alameda to Honolulu in 1958. Matson Navigation constructed a ship called the Hawaiian Citizen in 1960 and then a company called Sea-Land constructed a ship called “Gateway City which made its maiden voyage on October 4, 1957 from Port Newark to Miami. Cargo was being moved at the rate of 264 tons per hour with two gangs of dockworkers loading and unloading the cargo from the ship. Grace Line then introduced a fully containerized ship called the Santa Eliana which entered the realm of foreign trade when her destination was Venezuela in January, 1960. Standardisation and Regulations Container sizes needed to be standardised so that they could be efficiently stacked on top of one another. This standardization allowed for ships, trains, trucks and cranes at ports to be built or fitted to deal with one particular size specification. TheInternational Organization for Standardisation set standards for cargo containers in 1961 and this now applies across the global industry for international shipping. A regulation was enacted in 1972 by the Inter-governmental Maritime Consultative Organization regarding both the safe handling and the transport of shipping containers. Under this regulation, all cargo containers which travel internationally must be labelled with a CSC Plate (Container Safety Convention). The correct procedure for inspection is to inspect containers before and after packing them to ensure that they are safe and ready for transport.

Why Shipping Containers Make Great Houses
Featured
A fairly new concept in the world of home construction is to use... ... shipping containers for houses. These containers are all the same uniform size and constructed out of sturdy steel. Shipping containers offer a quick and sustainable solution to building a home and basic containers can be laid side by side or stacked a top of one another to create a sizeable home for a family.
Shipping Containers for Houses – A Unique Solution Once in place, the container(s) can be configured in the way that best suits the home plan and after completion, the home is ready for moving in. With traditional homes, a foundation must be built and that requires time to be set up. Once that has been completed, stick frame construction can proceed and then all the basic construction must be inspected and passed by local building authorities. However, when you are using shipping containers for houses, all you need to do is purchase the components and have them delivered. A cement pad may be sufficient to sit the containers on, or you may want to use some type of concrete blocks as a foundation. The containers can be welded together to keep them in place, but some people prefer to keep them moveable. The interior of a shipping container is a blank canvas and it is a simple matter to add insulation and wiring to the interior, as well as to have the entire unit plumbed. When people use shipping containers for houses, they save a great deal of time and money. The container is already a selfcontained structure; all that needs to be done is to install windows and the interior structures such as walls and doors. Once the building has been completed, it is often not an easy to see that the building is actually constructed from shipping containers.

Shipping Containers for Houses – a Cost Effective Housing Solution. The cost of purchasing shipping containers for houses is a mere fraction of the cost of building a full scale home using traditional building materials. The ready-made solution of a shipping container allows a person to have a home constructed and move in ready in a matter of a few weeks as opposed to long and drawn out timelines that are required to construct a home using traditional methods. Many young couples just starting out have very little disposable income and not much of a credit rating. Container houses are a great option for a first home. When someone suggests that using shipping containers for houses is a good idea, many people picture a large steel box, but the possibilities to personalise a container and make it a home are simply endless. The structure itself is strong and can withstand all kinds of weather and environmental disasters. It is heavy enough that it will not be easily moved, and the construction of the shipping container makes it completely water proof. The fire rating of this type of structure makes it one that insurance companies love, so home insurance will definitely be a lot more affordable.

Shipping Containers - To Buy or Hire, That is the Question Shipping containers can be particularly useful for a variety of purposes. If you think you need a shipping container, one of the many decisions that you will need to make is if you should purchase a container or hire it. The main determining factor of a rental or a purchase is what you will need the container for. If it is for a short term use, then rental may make monetary sense over a purchase. If you need the container for a longer period of time, it might make sense to buy one. Hiring Shipping Containers If you just need it for actually shipping items, as the container was designed to do, then hiring one is a good idea. The only time you will need the container is during the shipping process, and once your items are shipped to their destination, you will need to empty the container and remove your items to your home or wherever else you want them. If you plan to move several times, shipping containers can be extremely useful and can be used over and over again.
Renting a container is good for short and temporary uses such as short-term storage or you can hire a modified shipping container as a place to stay in while a home is being built or repaired. Purchasing Shipping Containers If you want to use shipping containers for a variety of uses on an ongoing basis, you should purchase one or several. The cost is reasonable and when you decide later that you no longer need the container you can re-sell it and recoup your investment. You may have seen homes built out of shipping containers or you may have seen them simply used as a storage shed. These containers are large enough to hold a lot of items and keep them secure in your yard until they are needed again in the future. Shipping Container Uses Whether hiring or buying a shipping container, there are many uses for shipping containers apart from the obvious and tradition means of conveying goods. Shipping containers can be altered to suit just about any purpose. Windows can be installed, doors cut and the container can be divided into rooms. Several containers can be stacked on top of one another or placed beside each other and connected. The result is a series of containers that are connected to form a larger structure. This can become a unique home that will get you

many compliments and accolades. People will want to know exactly how you created such a unique structure and how the plan came together. For those who are looking for a small guest cabin or a vacation cottage that can be moved if necessary, a shipping container is the perfect solution. You do not have to worry about constructing a stick frame building because a shipping container already contains all of the necessary walls and structure. All that you need to do is come up with a plan and build the interior of the container by installing walls, electrical wiring and plumbing. This will create a useable space that is set up for someone to live in comfortably. Shipping containers provide suitable buildings that are affordable and are portable if they need to be. If a building is placed in one spot, you can move it to another location if it is placed on a temporary foundation. A home can be built out of low cost containers that can be configured into a variety of shapes and styles. Once the containers are connected to one another they are secure and ready to be lived in. Container living is a good solution for those who do not have a lot of money to spend on building a new home or would like the option of living mortgage free. Shipping Container Bars, Innovative Entertainment You have probably been to a bar or two in your lifetime, and many of us have. The experience is usually enhanced by the surroundings, so if you are looking for a unique one, you may want to look into visiting a shipping container bar. Shipping Container bars are simply a bar that is constructed out of a shipping container. Shipping containers are generally used for a five year period for the purposes of shipping before they are basically decommissioned. Traditionally at this time they are generally recycled for the scrap metal. These days recycling and repurposing is a big deal. Finding any way to repurpose an item is important because it means using less of our natural resources and making use of items that already exist. Las Vegas has a development called Container City which features some exciting eateries and several shipping container bars. Bin 702 sells salads and sandwiches and wine in bottles as well as on tap. Big Ern’s BBQ features BBQ and beer on tap. The one full service bar is The Boozery, which is aptly named. It serves wine by the bottle or glass, beer on tap or in a can and mixed drinks. Using shipping container are an excellent alternative and can be modified to exactly what the customer needs and the options are endless. At Tiger Containers we make the owner feel at ease and all they have to worry about is turning their attention to more important things like the necessary licence’s and finding the perfect location. Many shipping containers do not even look like what they were used for originally and once transformed they never cease to amaze. Offering the most unique experience is just part of the attraction and one way to draw people to a new bar and in itself creating a whole new brand of atmosphere. Las Vegas is innovative in their designs and ideas, but we are sure that soon those concepts will be coming to a city near you. With countless retired shipping containers available for sale at deeply discounted prices, it just makes sense to utilise this pre-existing form to build an exciting and innovative place where people can gather and socialise. One of the best things about shipping containers is that one can be used or several can be combined, and this ensures that the finished building is exactly what is intended according to the vision of the owner of the bar.

Great Examples of Shipping Container Kitchens
Featured
Food trucks were once a hot “must visit” destination. You can still see food trucks in most major cities today, but there is a new trend that seems to be gathering strength. Shipping container kitchens are making an appearance in many major cities and some smaller ones too.
These rooms are self-contained and are a fantastic way to repurpose an old shipping container that is no longer needed by the company that was previously using it. With the importance of repurposing items and transforming them into something that is useful, the upcycling of shipping containers is not only trendy, but completely extraordinary. Shipping Container Kitchens – Ready Made Solutions Today’s solution, filling the need for a kitchen or a restaurant, are shipping container kitchens that are durable and cost effective. These kitchens can be moved via truck to any location where they are needed. The entire unit can be joined together with other similar containers to form a substantial full sized facility once in place. These containers can be a temporary solution when a kitchen is needed for an event such as a large festival. They can also be the perfect solution for work camps and can provide food facilities for workers as well as a place to sleep if that is needed. Since shipping container kitchens are extremely portable, they can be transported easily to where the need arises. If a disaster occurs then the container can be moved to a new location to supply food to those who are in need. When a shipping container is used and business is not that substantial, the entire restaurant can be picked up and moved to a better location where things may be a little bit busier. A regular restaurant that is experiencing slow business does not have the same “relocation” ability and may end up closing its doors because it cannot go where the customers are. Examples of Great Shipping Container Kitchens More often these days shipping container kitchens are appearing in a variety of locations including New York’s Times Square, under the Eiffel Tower in Paris and in the inner harbour of Victoria, BC. The entire kitchen is self-contained inside of the container, so it is easy to use and to serve people who are walking by outside. In Victoria, British Columbia, Red Fish, Blue Fish is a trendy restaurant that is located in an old Hummer Crate. The owners admitted that they had some problems getting the right permits to

In Paris, France, a shipping container kitchen set up is located right below the Eiffel Tower. http://www.muvbox.ca/en The Container Restaurant is located in Durango, Colorado. It serves food next to a brewery and pairs up brick over pizza with other snacks and sandwiches while pairing up with Ska Brewing’s brews. Washington, D.C. has a container restaurant known as El Ray. It is located in what was a bare and ragged paved lot near Dodge City. The new glass storefront has three painted shipping containers which contain a beer garden and a taqueria. There is a large patio in the back that also has a retractable roof that can be rolled back or extended for coverage as needed. Although they focus mainly on tequila and tacos but they do keep some beer on tap. There are windows that face the street and allow people who are walking by to order tacos from the street. The idea began as a concept for a summer beer garden and a taco shop after Eric Hilton saw houses in the Caribbean that were built out of shipping containers. http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/going-out-guide/wp/2013/12/27/how-el-rey-d-c-s-firstshipping-container-restaurant-was-built-on-u-street/

Different Types of Shipping Containers
Featured
There are many different types of shipping containers and each one has its own purpose. Many people may not be aware of the wider range of container types, but there is a container for every purpose that a business might need them for. Intermodal shipping containers are used to ship freight overseas. Once the container ship has been berthed, the ship then needs to be unloaded. Massive gantry cranes are used to transfer large containers from the ship over to the dock where they are separated from one another and then grouped in a large storage area. The containers are then loaded onto trucks or rail cars for shipment to their final destination. Used shipping containers are sought by many businesses because they are available at a much lower price than new ones. Purchasing a refurbished container can save a business a lot of money. For smaller businesses on a lower budget who are dealing with shipments on a smaller scale, purchasing a used shipping container just makes financial sense. Some used shipping containers have only been lightly used and are then offered up for sale. This means that those who are in the market for a used shipping container can find one in superior condition for a reduced price. Sellers of used shipping containers, such as Tiger Containers are willing to sell single units and this represents substantial cost savings for smaller businesses that cannot afford to purchase containers in large quantities. These containers are also extremely useful for a wide range of non-shipping uses including storage and instant buildings. Here are several types of shipping containers that are readily available for purchase: 1. A – Grade Fully Painted. These shipping containers are in very good condition and have been repaired. All holes are fully repaired and there are no dents in the container more than 50 mm deep. The floor of the container is sound with no breakage or cracks. The doors easily open with a full 270 degree range and do not stick at all. The bars lock and all of the moving parts of the container including the seals, handles, retainers, saddles and cams are in good condition. The Grade A shipping container is wind and water tight making it completely suitable for food transport or for export. The containers have been repainted to an as new condition using marine grade paint. 2. Cargo worthy (wind and water tight). Although the container is not in new condition it is certified for use in overseas shipping. This type of container must meet certain standards of structural strength and are water tight and wind tight. They are better quality than standard used containers that do not have a certification.
http://www.tigercontainers.com
3. High Cube Cargo Worthy. A high cube container is one that is between 40 and 45 feet high. The container is designed to carry a maximum payload of 30,200 kg or 76 cubic meters to the load line. This container is designed to hold a large amount of product and ship it safely to its final destination. 4. Reefer Shipping Container. This is an intermodal container that is refrigerated so that temperature sensitive cargo can be easily transported over great distances. Although these containers have their own refrigeration unit, they need external power from electrical hook-ups at a port or container ship. These units can be transported on roadways and hooked up to a diesel powered generator. The container is effectively plugged in during the road trip, keeping the contents inside refrigerated. If a reefer is stored under the deck of a vessel without adequate ventilation it may have its own cooling system which will remove any heat that is generated. These systems are fairly expensive so most boats rely on ventilation to remove any heat that is collected in the cargo hold. Reefer units allow consumers around the world to enjoy fresh products from many parts of the world. Reefers have interior insulation on the doors, walls, floor and roof of the container. By controlling the temperature inside the unit, food can be shipped across the world and received in good order at the other end. 5. Refrigerated Shipping Container. This is a shipping container that keeps contents at a certain cool temperature. These containers are usually identifiable by the aluminium white coloured sides. They have smooth flat walls (not corrugated like standard shipping containers). They have refrigeration machinery located at the rear of the unit. Before a refrigerated shipping container is used it requires a serious amount of inspection including passing a Pre-Trip Inspection (PTI) prior to loading the container. During a PTI the container and the machinery that runs it must be inspected to ensure the settings are correct and that the container is in good condition. If you are planning to purchase a used shipping container you will need to inspect it to ensure that it meets with your requirements and that it is in good condition. When containers are first constructed they are strong and durable, but years of use can cause substantial damage. If you plan to purchase a container sight unseen, be sure to ask for pictures of the container both inside and out from all different sides. Most containers are manufactured to specific standards, but there are some non-standard sizes available. You will want to confirm that the container that you are purchasing has standard dimensions and will be suitable for the purpose that you need it for. If you can take a look at the container then there are certain things that you need to check for.
http://www.tigercontainers.com
The container should be wind and water tight. Close the doors of the container and remain inside, look around to see if there are any holes where the daylight comes in. Look for rust and ensure that it is only on the surface. Check for rust or corrosion around hardware and door seals.
Make certain that the doors open and close fully and correctly. Door seals should be intact and the floor should be solid with no spongy spots. If any repairs have been made they should be correctly caulked, sealed and painted.
Examine the top of the container for major dents.
Make certain that there is no contamination or strong odours inside the container.
Once you have found a suitable container, then it is up to you to make the final decision to purchase the unit. Used containers are a good investment even if you are only using them temporarily because they do not lose their value if they are cared for properly. Tiger Containers prides itself on providing only the best quality new or used containers, and are happy to assist every step of the way through the process.

A Shipping Container as an On-site Storage Facility Shipping containers provide an excellent solution as an on-site storage facility. Many home owners have limited space and cannot add extra buildings beyond the allowable building limits, so if there is already a separate garage and a tool shed, no other permanent buildings can be placed on the property. A shipping container provides a good option because it is large enough to accommodate a large amount of items. Here are some other excellent uses for shipping containers as storage facilities: • Shipping containers provide that much needed storage area where lockers can be installed. These are ideal for work camps, schools and sports facilities. The users of the lockers bring their own locks and the lockers provide a secure place for them to place their belongings for a short time or for the longer term. Not only are the lockers secure, but the outer doors of the container can also be closed as an added security measure. • On construction sites a shipping container can provide the perfect storage solution. A small amount of modification is required to make sure that the container is secure. Cages can be welded inside of the container so that locks can be added and equipment is secure inside the container overnight or on weekends when no one is at the job site. Tools are expensive and it can be risky to leave them behind at a job site where theft might occur. The cost to replace a lot of tools can be quite high, and a shipping container provides a perfectly secure lock up area for all job site tools. • Shipping containers provide an ideal paper archive solution too. The entire container can be outfitted with wooden shelves to hold boxes of documents that are important and should not be destroyed. The entire unit is fire proof so the paperwork is completely safe and secure inside of the shipping container. • If you are looking for storage away from your location, some shipping container companies will deliver a shipping container, allow you to load it and then remove it for you to be stored elsewhere. For some this is a very good solution because they do not have the space to keep a shipping container in their yard or on their property. • Renovating a home can be an intense undertaking. It is important to have a place to remove furniture and other items to and store them in on a temporary basis. This allows the renovations to proceed without concern that anything in the home will be damaged. Expensive furniture and electronics or other household items can be stored in an on-site storage facility and locked up to keep them secure. • For farmers a shipping container can provide a reliable storage area for agricultural equipment and supplies that need to be kept dry and safe from the elements. This is a good way to store the equipment that is only used a few times per year.
http://www.tigercontainers.com
• Many an automotive enthusiast who likes to build and rebuild cars needs certain parts and a place to store them. The shipping container provides a perfect on-site storage facility and ensures that the parts are kept dry. • Some commercial enterprises have a large amount of inventory but not enough space in their facility to store the inventory. The excess inventory can be stored in an on-site storage facility shipping container. • Shipping containers provide the perfect solution to store emergency disaster preparedness items. The container is heavy and waterproof so it should be able to withstand many different types of storms and flooding, keeping supplies dry and safe for when they are needed in an emergency situation. • Stores often have an extensive collection of seasonal items that they do not have room to store. A shipping container ensures that these items are on site and ready to be accessed when needed. Fixtures and promotional items are needed at certain times of the year and need to be stored in a place where they can be accessed on an as needed basis. • Schools and churches often have extra supplies that they need to keep near their facility but do not have the storage space. Chairs and tables are needed for events and dinners or assemblies but take up a lot of room in a building. On-site shipping containers ensure that the equipment is nearby and ready when it is needed. • Moving an entire household can be simplified with a shipping container. Have the container dropped off well in advance of your planned move, then take your time and pack the container as you see fit and when you have time. Before you know it the entire house will be packed up into the shipping container and ready to be moved to your new home. Forget moving trucks, this is a lot less stressful and way more convenient. The items that you will need immediately will be located near the front of the container because they will be the last items that you pack. • Equipment that is needed for yard work and for landscaping is not used all year round. A large lawnmower and yard tools can take up a lot of room in a garage, so a shipping container can provide a reasonable storage solution that keeps the space in the garage free for something more important – your car! Shipping containers are an extremely handy item that can be used to provide a wide range of storage solutions. These containers are waterproof, windproof, secure and safe. They are large enough to store larger items and can be situated in any location that you prefer. If you are concerned about local bylaws, these containers are not a “permanent” fixture, so they comply with most local laws and will not draw complaints or penalties. If you are looking for a storage solution that meets your needs and is inexpensive, then you may want to consider a shipping container. Sources:

Open Top Containers: What are they? Open top containers are a type of shipping container that is used for items that are too large to be loaded into a regular sized shipping container. These containers are manufactured from corrugated steel and generally have a wood floor. The top of the container is open and is covered with a strong rubber tarpaulin rather than a solid roof. The tarpaulin is secured with removable bows to hold it in place and features a door header that swivels outwards to allow for loading from the top or the end. The roof bows not only support the tarpaulin but also provide stability to the container. End doors also provide additional flexibility which allows for easier loading. The dimensions of these containers vary, but they tend to have a larger capacity because they are not limited by a roof. Sizes of open top containers vary between manufacturer, so it is important to measure the volume of the items to be loaded and ensure that they will ultimately fit inside the container once loaded. Tiger Containers can provide an open top container to suit your precise needs. Uses for Open Top Containers These useful containers are ideal for loading scrap metal and timber via large cranes. Some companies use these containers for shipping large machinery because the items can just be loaded right into the container from the end and then covered with a tarpaulin. Loading and unloading these containers is a lot easier than loading a conventional storage container. Some larger items that cannot fit into conventionally configured cargo containers. When an open top container is fully loaded it may be over height and needs a special storage area to accommodate it. These containers also feature lashing rings which helps to secure the load inside and keep it contained and safe. Lashing rings generally can withstand a load of 1,000 kg. The average open top container is forty feet long, but is also available in twenty foot sizes which are suitable for a variety of cargo loading uses. Open top containers are also used extensively for removal of waste items or bulk recycling products. Once items have been sorted and weighed, they are loaded into these containers and then shipped on cargo ships. Some of the items that are commonly stored or shipped in an open top container include:
Ore and other raw mining materials
Pipes of varying lengths, sizes, shapes and thicknesses
Tools, generally outfitted with shelving to hold and transport a large variety of tools;
Cable spools and cable;
Construction supplies or debris;

Attachments for machinery that are just too bulky to be placed on trucks for transport.
There are a variety of shipping containers that are available for any use and when you find that the items that you need to ship are larger than standard containers will hold, you may need to consider using an open top container. 3 Reasons Shipping Container Architecture is on the Rise There are many situations where a shipping container home is just the best option for temporary living. For instance, if your house is being renovated, it makes sense to use a shipping container home so you can have somewhere to sleep and live while your house is full of dust and construction workers. But there's more to shipping container homes than just temporary solutions. Shipping container architecture is a trend that's been picking up speed in recent years, and it doesn't look like it's going to stop. These shipping container houses are more than just temporary places to sleep. They're fully equipped homes for couples and families to live in for the rest of their lives. You may have seen this around: entire homes custom-built using multiple adapted shipping containers. Maybe you drive past one every day on your way to work without even knowing. Here's why shipping container architecture is a trend that won't be dying out any time soon. 1. Shipping containers are affordable - It only takes five shipping containers to create a spacious home - even less, if you use your space wisely. In fact, it's possible to get a complete shipping container home for under $600 per square metre. The price for a standard home is usually about $1200 per square metre. 2. They are recycled - It's generally too expensive for a dock to ship the containers back to the country of origin, which means there are a lot of shipping containers lying around with nowhere to go. By making a home from these containers, you're using up a whole bunch of previously unusable resources. No need to cut down more trees to put a roof over your head. 3. Shipping container architecture can be set up quickly -Once your shipping container home is designed and the containers are modified, it only takes a few days to take them to the desired location and put them all together. That means in only a few days, you can be making toast in the brand new kitchen of your brand new home. No messing about with weeks of construction. All the major work is done off-site so they're ready to be assembled on delivery. A shipping container home isn't for everyone, and there are a lot of things that need to be taken into consideration, like building regulations and temperature control. But if you want a contemporary home that's affordable and uses resources that are already available, it's a good option to consider.

What to Look for With Used Shipping Containers Used shipping containers are useful for a variety of applications. Whether you are looking for extra storage, a temporary building or something to use for a new home, there is nothing more versatile or sturdy than a shipping container. Used shipping containers are useful for a variety of applications. Whether you are looking for extra storage, a temporary building or something to use for a new home, there is nothing more versatile or sturdy than a shipping container. There are several things to look for when you are in the market for a container, so here are some basic guidelines when you start looking around for a container: Decide on the size of container you need. Used shipping containers are available in a variety of sizes and configurations, with the most common being closed top containers with doors that open on one end. These are generally available in 20 and 40 foot sizes. Always deal with a reputable company that has been in business for a while. Although shipping containers are not unreasonably expensive, you are still going to be spending a large amount of money, so you want to know that the company is going to deliver on what is promised. If you can inspect the container in person, it is best to do that rather than buying a container sight unseen. Check for any holes in the container by stepping inside and closing the door – if there are holes, light will shine through. Check to see that the doors and locking mechanisms all work properly if you need the container for storage. Look for dents in the roof that can collect water and eventually turn into a rusty spot that can develop into a hole. Any patches that have been made on the container should be correctly done so that they do not separate from the container. What is the delivery cost? Used shipping containers are large and heavy and cannot simply be loaded onto a regular truck or trailer. These special containers need to be shipped with proper equipment for safety and to ensure that delivery is seamless. Always enquire if the cost of delivery is included or if it is an added charge. Check for repainting. Even the ugliest used container can be repainted. As long as the repairs that have been made to it have been done correctly, you are investing in a container that you can use for just about any purpose. If you plan to resell the container in the future, then you want to ensure that it is in decent condition. If a container has been freshly painted this might be an attempt to cover up rust spots. Rust is not an issue if it is properly treated with a rust converter, but you will not be able to identify those spots until they bleed through the paint.

Pros and Cons of Shipping Container Architecture This is a very interesting article on the Pros and Cons of utilising shipping containers for homes and I have to agree with most of the points made. As a seller of container homes we love the fact that you can design some really high spec homes at a fraction of the cost in comparison to a conventional building and with the cost of living rising on a yearly basis people still want the comfort of living in something really beautiful and that’s where a shipping container home wins.
http://www.jetsongreen.com/2014/08/pros-and-cons-of-shipping-container-architecture.html
Also not everyone has the money to do something as nice as what the family have done in the photo and that’s another reason why I think more and more people are looking to shipping containers as an alternative to a conventional home. You can simply have a 6m or 12m container fitted out with very simple specs and essentially just move in for a very small budget. Shipping containers are Versatile and suited to everyone no matter how big or small your budget may be and that’s why I believe the Pros will outweigh the Cons and you will see more and more people look to shipping containers as time goes by.

What are the uses and benefits of Side Opening Shipping Containers? What are side opening shipping containers? Side opening shipping containers are shipping containers that open from the side instead of from the back. The sides slide or swing open to reveal a larger opening that can be used to load extralarge cargo or other items that can be may be otherwise difficult to load into a standard shipping container that opens from the rear.
Apart from the position of the door the side opening container is similar to every other shipping container in that it has a wooden floor and a solid top and base. The sides of the unit are designed to open on either side or just on one side to reveal the interior of the container. One main reason that standard containers can sometimes be difficult to deal with is that the weight can quickly get out of control because there is the little ability to move or rearrange any items that have already been loaded into the container, without unloading it again. While this is overcome by careful planning, this is not such an issue with side opening containers. Another reason that rear loading shipping containers can be difficult is that once the container is loaded, there is no access to items that are packed near the front of the container until the whole container has been unloaded. If shipping containers that open from the side are used, the items can be loaded from the side with a forklift and items can easily be stacked in an appropriate arrangement that makes it simple to access everything that is inside of the container. What are their Uses?
These containers are great for shipping large items that are too awkward or cumbersome to load from the rear of a container.
Side opening containers can be modified to comply with the regulations required to make them suitable for the storage of dangerous chemicals and goods.
They are also very useful for outdoor storage because they can be accessed from both sides of the container, so it can be placed anywhere on a property that it would be convenient to access.
A popular and modern use is as an outdoor restaurant or café because the entire unit can be closed up and secured at the end of a business day. The doors slide open to reveal the interior of

a kiosk style business where food can be ordered at a counter and then is served outside of the container at picnic style tables that are set up around the area. These are also good for a small bar where people can get a drink and enjoy it on a patio nearby. What are the Advantages of Side Opening Containers? A side-opening shipping container has dual side openings, is fully lockable, and is wind tight and water tight. Several layers of stock can be loaded if dividers are installed making the container much more usable. Some cargo can be better dealt with using a side opening container because it can be placed in one side and then extracted from the other, which eliminates the need to rotate the container around. If the side opening container suits a particular need that you have, then you have a few decisions to make before you purchase or rent one. The first thing to know is what size of shipping container will suit your needs. Once you know that, decide whether you want a container that opens from either side or just one side. You can have the container customised so that it can be locked and you can have windows and doors added to the container if you have other uses planned for it. Whatever you need, you should get in touch with Tiger Containers to discuss how we can help you. At Tiger Containers, we have over 30 years’ experience helping people just like you and we want to ensure that your needs are met. We want to provide you with the right shipping container that will be suitable or a modified container that is customised to your particular requirements. Shipping Containers: To Buy or Hire Shipping containers are usually used for storage and transportation. However, a huge number of people have modified them for various other purposes. Before you can do anything with them, the first step will involve determining whether you want to buy or hire. The following are some of the pros and cons of hiring a shipping container instead of buying one: Pros: Hiring a container is a good idea for short / temporary uses. They can be used as a semipermanent storage facility or a short-term home. They are often ideal for people who are conducting household repairs. Hiring a shipping container provides you with the opportunity to explore its different elements. You will also be able to ascertain whether or not it can perform your preferred functions. Hiring a shipping container is a very good idea for events. It allows you to save on costs and still do what you want. If it’s a week-long tradeshow that happens every two years or a once-a-year event, the best option is to hire. It is a convenient way of delivering your goods and promoting your brand. Most companies prefer to maintain a lean inventory that ensures their overhead costs are low. This technique also helps to reduce the tax and insurance requirements. By renting a shipping container, you can effectively manage your inventory in a more advantageous way. This means less overall costs. You can purchase modified shipping containers and use them on a regular basis for different purposes. In many cases it can be for a show or venue where you need to maximise the space you have. Cons If you wish to use shipping containers on an ongoing basis, it’s probably best that your purchase one or several. The cost of buying is quite reasonable when you take into account the fact that you can sell the container when you no longer need it, often with no loss in capital. Hiring a container over and over again can prove to be quite costly. If you need a shipping container for a

custom-built home or a storing shed, these kinds of structures are usually built on a more permanent basis. Hiring a shipping container requires that you will have to give it back the way you found it. You can’t make any permanent customisations and this might limit the containers practicality. When you buy a shipping container, you can engage in a complete customisation/modification project. You can have it built to your exact specifications. At the end of it all, you would have increased its value if you ever want to sell it. In most cases, you will have to sign a hiring agreement before you receive the shipping container. This document usually contains a variety of rules that you need to follow; if you fail to do so, it can lead to penalties. If you have no defined timelines, it’s often best that you purchase the container. In the end, the cost of renting can exceed that of owning. Hiring a shipping container involves a lot of care and precautions because it’s not your property. If the container gets damaged, you will have to cover the costs. Shipping containers can be modified for a variety of uses. You can install windows and doors or divide it into different rooms. Several containers can also be stacked on top of each other or next to each other. The end result will be a series of containers that form a large structure. This is one of the main reasons why shipping containers are becoming such popular homes.

Increasing the Storage Space in Your Shipping Container Shed A shipping container shed is a very affordable alternative to building a traditional shed in your yard. Shipping containers are more durable than traditional wood sheds and are much more secure than most styles of shed that people use in their own garden. The size of these containers also makes them idea for the storage of many larger items including a ride-on lawnmower, motorcycles, and large outdoor furniture pieces that must be stored during the off-season. There are several ways to set up a shipping container shed so that you can make the most economical use of the space inside of the container: 1. Container Partitions. Containers come in a variety of sizes – 10, 20, 30, and 40 feet and the inside of the container can be divided up with partitions making it possible for a person to separate out and organise the content of the shed. For example, one area can be for garden supplies while another has seasonal decorations from inside the house. The way that you utilise the partitions is completely up to you. The partitions placed inside of the shipping container can be solid or they can be removable - it all depends upon your particular needs. 2. Container Ramps. Many shipping containers have a lip that is about 5 cm from the ground to the floor of the container. This is standard because of the way containers are stacked and stored when in commercial use. There is a plywood flooring inside of the container which keeps items off of the ground and this can add more height to the inside of the shipping container. If you are using your container as a shed then you will need to have easy access to the interior. Moving heavy items or things with wheels can prove difficult if they have to be lifted into the container. A shipping container ramp provides easy access to the container by allowing a person to walk up a gradual slope and get into the container with items that are heavy, or push up a trolley or dolly etc. Ramps are economical, easy to install, can be removed if necessary and eliminate many safety concerns for those going into and out of a shipping container with heavy or bulky items.
http://www.tigercontainers.com
3. Container Rack /Shelving installation. You can choose to have racks or shelves installed that will make your shipping container shed more organised. Racks can stand alone or be attached to the shipping container, it simply depends on what kind of materials you want to store, and what your needs are. By adding racks and shelving you can store small items or anything else that you need to store off of the floor. It is much easier to find items and to reach them when they are organised on shelves or racks. When racks and shelves are installed in a shipping container shed, the space inside of the container is truly maximised. It is also much easier to take advantage of the height available inside of the container when you have racks in place.
http://www.tigercontainers.com
A shipping container shed is weatherproof and is generally delivered right to your home so that you do not have to worry about how you will get it there. Once it arrives you can have it placed in a pre-determined location. You may request shelving or partitions to be installed in the container before it is delivered or you can install them once it is on your property. Depending on what you plan to store in the container, you can deter break-ins by adding secure locks to the container. If you are going to use a ramp, you can install it and have it in place or you can have a ramp that drops down and doubles as a door. Larger and heavier items like lawnmowers can be stored in your shipping container shed because it is solid enough to support that kind of weight. If you wish, you can have the container wired so that you can have lighting and /or heat inside of the container. This will help in the future if you wish to convert the container into a workshop. Condensation control is important and this can be taken care of with a liner inside of the container. It is important to decide if you want to have windows installed (and how many) and where you want the doors to be located. A shipping container shed can be quite attractive when you take the time to decorate by adding paint or trim. You can even add siding which can make the full metal container look like a wooden building if you want to make it look less unsightly. Once you start putting things inside of the shed you will be surprised about how much you can fit inside. How Secure Onsite Storage Can Benefit You If you have an over-abundance of items in your home and have run out of places to store those items, then you may be looking for an alternative solution. If you are moving house you may need additional storage too, while you move. For a lot of very important items, it is important to ensure that they are kept indoors and be secure.
One very reasonable option could be for you to choose secure onsite storage. What is Secure Onsite Storage? This is a large facility where you can store your goods and you do not have to worry that the items are safe because the facility is fully secured. What defines a secure facility? The answer is simple. A secure facility is locked at all times, has a gate and fence around it and also has 24/7 security cameras that keep an eye on your items for you so that you can rest easy in the knowledge that your items are secure. Tiger Containers Large operates two high security storage facilities at Tempe and Roselands. Web use shipping containers for your storage - they are locked and are located behind a fence in a secure facility with 24/7 security cameras. These containers are high quality and are the ideal place to store a variety of items. There are many advantages to storing your items in a secure facility, including: • You can free up valuable room within your home for extra living space; • Seasonal items can be stored elsewhere so that there is more room to store other items; • You do not have to make difficult decisions about selling things or giving things away that you do not have room to store. • If you are planning to sell your home, clearing out your home and storing most of those items can help you to “stage” your home and increases your chance of selling it. • Planning to get your Christmas shopping done early? Secure onsite storage is the perfect hiding spot and the only one who has access to it is you! • When you store your items in a secure onsite storage facility they will be kept out of the sun as well as safe and dry. Why Use Secure On-site storage? Moving overseas? If you are travelling or moving overseas, and it is for a pre-determined amount of time (meaning you will come back eventually), then you will want to store your furniture and other household items temporarily. It makes little sense to sell it all and then have to re-purchase all new items
http://www.tigercontainers.com
when you return. Many people have a number of high quality household items that are definitely worth keeping and/or storing, so it is best to store them. Clearing out an Estate? When someone passes away, it is often important to clear out all of their items from their home immediately. If you are the executor of the estate you may not have the room to store those items and it is usually the case with an estate that you may not dispose of anything before probate has been granted. The estate will pay you back for your storage fees, but in the meantime you must deal with the deceased’s belongings. A secure onsite storage facility is the best place to keep those items so that they are safe and do not incur any damage. Future Garage Sale Maybe you have purchased all new furniture and other items. You want to get rid of all of the items that you have replaced, but you want to sell them for a good price. You only have a few things, but your friends and neighbours have expressed that they want to pitch in some items of their own. You can store all potential garage sale items together to accumulate enough items to have a large sale that can attract a larger customer base and have the potential for a decent profit. Moving and Dates Don’t Line Up? Maybe you are moving from one home to another but you need to move out a few days before you have possession of your new home. This can be a logistical nightmare, but if you can store your items with secure onsite storage then you can simply move all of your items to the storage facility and not have to worry about what you are going to do with all of your belongings. All items can be stored to make things easier for you when it comes to moving and to ensuring all of your items are moved at the right time. Downsizing Your Home If you move from a large home to a smaller one you do not always have the option to get rid of everything all at once as you declutter. There may be things that you want to keep because they are important to you. There may also be things that you can’t get rid of immediately that you need to sell but that you cannot sell quickly. Storing all of those items can provide a solution to this dilemma. The only issue that you have left when it comes to secure onsite storage is choosing the right facility. Tiger Containers has two locations in New South Wales that are ideal for your storage needs.

Benefits of Shipping Container Partitions Shipping containers are a convenient way to store a variety of items in a small area. These containers can be placed in any area of your property and can be used in a variety of ways. When partitions are added, the space is much better defined insofar as it can be better utilised by having a distinct storage area for certain items. You do not need to worry about how you will place items because you can always access them with the use of partitions. The front part of the shipping container can be used to store excess household items, the middle to store gardening supplies and the rear to store the kids old stuff now that they have left home. Shipping Container Ramps Most shipping containers have a height to ground difference which can make it difficult to load a container because items must be lifted up and into the container. If items are heavier, it can be hard to hoist them into the container and this can put you at risk of injury. Shipping container ramps can remove the risks and provide a clear path into the shipping container. A longer ramp has a more gradual slope while a shorter one is steeper.
Shipping container ramps can be installed on a more permanent basis if you want to build them on site once. If the ramp needs to be temporary so that it can be removed, it can be taken away and placed around the back of the shipping container when it is not needed. This can eliminate a lot of unnecessary space wastage. Sometimes some of the larger items can be quite heavy: with a ramp these items can be rolled into a shipping container. You then need to decide if you want the ramp to be permanent or temporary and they can be installed on existing shipping containers or new ones. Ramps can also be incorporated into doors that drop down like a drawbridge style. Shipping containers are a good option for storage and a ramp will make your shipping container just that much more useful. There are various factors that you may have to consider. Check out below on how you can choose the best container for your office. 1. Size – Most containers are 8 feet high and either 20 feet or 40 feet long, but you can find containers which are 9.5 feet high. Refurbishing a Used Container for Your Office Needs Sprucing up a used container yourself so that you can use it for your office purposes isn’t as easy as many people may think. First, you may need to apply a fresh paint to the interior to cover up the scratches and dents present in the old container to make your office look new and attractive. You may need to prep, prime and then paint the exterior of your container. If there are any repairs required, such as holes, dents or scratches, you’ll need to fix those. Refurbishing your container makes it look better and allows it to serve you longer. Other things to consider: Installing Doors and Windows Just like any other office, your container must have doors and windows to foster ventilation and increase the lighting inside the container. Standard shipping containers usually come with lockable double swing doors at each end of the container. The double doors can be ideal if you are a person who likes versatility and flexibility or you can customize your container with an aftermarket door if you don’t like the doors which come with the container. Advantages of Using Shipping Container Offices They Are Portable: Shipping container offices can be carried to any place conveniently. Easy to install and remove, these onsite containers are great for architects, project managers, regional sales managers and any other proprietor whose work isn’t restricted to one place. Since they can be moved easily, they are suitable to be used anywhere at any time of the year. They can be quickly installed and even easier to take them away. They can be Customised: These office shipping containers can be modified to suit your office needs. The lighting system, doors, flooring, furniture and other things can be installed depending on your needs. Other things such as air conditioning systems can also be installed if you need them. They are Spacious: Other than being comfortable and versatile, onsite shipping container offices are spacious. There is enough space for your office furniture, printers and other office equipment. Just remember to choose good quality, durable and secure containers and remember that you can actually join containers together to form larger office structures making it easier to get the space you’d want. Generally, contractors, engineers and other professionals are now embracing the use of shipping containers as durable, portable and versatile offices, which can be used in a variety of places. This is a form of mobile office, meaning you can move your office whenever you need. Being weather-resilient, these containers can keep all your office documents and equipment safe from the elements and secure from intruders.
