J. Thomas Baugh Born November 11, 1941 in Knoxville, TN Year Admitted to the Bar: 1966

CAREER HIGHLIGHTS/ PROUDEST ACHIEVEMENTS John Thomas (Tommy) Baugh practiced insurance defense litigation as a partner at Kennerly, Montgomery and Finley before opening his own firm in Dandridge and Knoxville with his wife, Patti Jane Lay. His practice focuses on utilities law, representing Jefferson Cocke County Utility District and United Utilities for over 20 years. He was General Counsel to Lincoln Memorial University for 37 years. His son, John Baugh, also practices with Lay and Baugh Law.


Bernard E. Bernstein Born February 3, 1931 in Newark, New Jersey Year Admitted to the Bar: 1956

CAREER HIGHLIGHTS/ PROUDEST ACHIEVEMENTS • Elected President of Knoxville Bar Association and selected for Governor's Award • Selected as Fellow of American College of Trial Lawyers • Appointed as the Founding Chairman of the Tennessee Holocaust Commission • Chairman of Police Review Commission and helped to create the Knoxville Police Review Commission (PARC) • Founding Chairman of the Board of the University Health System (University of Tennessee Hospital and Medical Center) • Participated in several three-judge Federal Courts dealing with civil rights litigation and one man-one vote litigation.


David T. Black Born May 15, 1944 in Maryville, TN Year Admitted to the Bar: 1968

CAREER HIGHLIGHTS/ PROUDEST ACHIEVEMENTS • Challenged small loan companies' methods of charging exorbitant interest in violation of the 1870 Tennessee constitution limiting rate to 10%. • Industrial loans and thrift act provision permitting such charges was declared unconstitutional and the practice prohibited. Cumber Capital Corp. US Patty. • Represented family of a young man housed in the state penitentiary in Nashville for "joyriding". He was murdered in his cell by an inmate from another cell when he resisted a sexual attack. • Challenged the state prison system for its failure to meet the Constitutional requirement of providing "safe & comfortable" prison.


Meredith C. Bond CAREER HIGHLIGHTS/ PROUDEST ACHIEVEMENTS Grew up in Bogalusa, LA. Attended Pearl River Jr. College, Poplarville, Miss. Earned B.S. from University of Southern Mississippi and JD from U.T. College of Law. Began practice in Feb. 1967, primarily insurance defense, emphasis on trial practice. In 1978, along with Archie Carpenter, represented plaintiff in product liability case, tried in Knox Circuit Court, Ellis v. White Freightliner 603 S.W.2d125 was significant at that time for its role in developing law of damages in wrongful death cases. CAREER HIGHLIGHTS/ PROUDEST ACHIEVEMENTS The constants in life are death, taxes and change - and I don't particularly like any of them. However, it has been gratifying to be able to assist clients as they deal with those situations, even to the third generation on occasions. Changes are tolerable as long as I can help others.

Jack B. Draper is an original partner in the firm of Arnett, Draper & Hagood, LLP. He received his B.S. degree in 1953 and his J.D. degree in 1957 from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. He is a past president of the Knoxville Bar Association; past member of the Board of Governors of the Tennessee Bar Association and a member of the American Bar Association, International Association of Defense Counsel, and a Fellow, American College of Trial Lawyers and International Academy of Trial Lawyers.


Hon. Joe D. Duncan

CAREER HIGHLIGHTS/ PROUDEST ACHIEVEMENTS Joe was born Feb. 11, 1924 in Huntsville, Tenn,, one of 10 siblings. After high school and a year at the Univ. of Tenn., he served in the Army Air Corps from 1943-45 as a B-29 navigator. He returned to UT, earned his J.D. in 1949, and entered private law practice. From 1950-53 he served as an FBI special agent, working out of the bureau’s Newark and New York offices. He returned to law practice in Knoxville and in 1966 was elected Knox Co. Criminal Court Judge. In 1975 he was appointed to the state Court of Criminal Appeals, where he rose to become Presiding Judge before his retirement in 1990.

CAREER HIGHLIGHTS/ PROUDEST ACHIEVEMENTS Mack Gentry founded the firm in 1976. He is a native of Knoxville and a 1966 graduate of the University of Tennessee, where he played and coached football for the Volunteers and was an Academic All-American. Mr. Gentry graduated from the University of Tennessee College of Law in 1968 and later served as an officer in the United States Army. He holds an advanced LL.M. degree in Taxation from New York University and is a John Lyons Certified Horse Trainer.


CAREER HIGHLIGHTS/ PROUDEST ACHIEVEMENTS Crafting out of court workout agreements that made it possible for dozens of businesses to continue to operate and for their commercial lenders to eventually realize a full recovery. Lewis R. Hagood Born in 1930 in Rogersville, Tennessee Year Admitted to the Bar: 1964

CAREER HIGHLIGHTS/ PROUDEST ACHIEVEMENTS Born 1930 on farm in East Tennessee near Rogersville; attended LMU 2 years; graduated from ETSU 1952; worked in Kingsport law firm specializing in labor-union matters until drafted in 1954 in Korean conflict; discharged 1956; returned to same law firm; traveled throughout the country participating in administrative hearings and arbitrations not requiring an attorney; firm loaned me money to attend UT law school (wife and three children) 1960- 1963; graduated first in class; editor in chief of TLR and in Order of Coif; admitted TSC 1964 (3 year tuition at UT approximately $725); joined Foster Arnett and Jack Draper 1965; became a partner 18 months later. (The rest is history).

Senior U.S. District Judge Leon Jordan recently marked 38 years of judicial service- 30 on the federal bench and 8 on the state bench. Judge Jordan, age 84, took senior status 17 years ago but has carried a heavy caseload since. He currently has pending 78 civil cases and 114 criminal defendants. He has been selected by his peers for inclusion in The Best Lawyers in America®. Mr. King has substantial experience in litigation, with his current practice areas being zoning, land use, governmental contracting, and business transactions.


CAREER HIGHLIGHTS/ PROUDEST ACHIEVEMENTS Whew, I try to recall the "highlights" of my legal career (still going), nothing spectacular comes to mind in my practice as a trial lawyer, but, I believe what I cherish the most from my 50+ years of practice are the friendships and the relationships formed with my colleagues in the practice, especially with the Knoxville Bar.

Following an interview on October 18, 1964, I was hired… Mack died October 18, 1982. In 18 years, the only arguments we ever had related to questions of law, and was he ever good at that?

In 1985 he established the current practice at the Strawberry Plains location as a part of the Taylor and Grover Law Firm where he was a senior partner. CAREER HIGHLIGHTS/ PROUDEST ACHIEVEMENTS John O’Connor, II attended UT and following graduation served in the armed forces as an officer. He attended the UT College of Law and upon graduation, he worked as a prosecutor in the Knox Co. Attorney General’s Office. John had a successful domestic relations practice until his retirement in 2010. Clients loved him and he was respected not only by opposing counsel, but also by the judges. John served as KBA President in 1984 and was the recipient of the KBA’s Governors’ Award in 2013.

CAREER HIGHLIGHTS/ PROUDEST ACHIEVEMENTS From 1957-1962, Bill knocked on doors to sell books during the summer. He became licensed to practice law in 1963, and worked with Fireman's Fund Insurance Company for two years. In 1965 he went to work at The University of Tennessee as the Director of Promotions for the Athletics Department through 1969. Bill served as the Director of Law for the City of Knoxville from 1971-1972 and then joined the firm of Child & O'Connor where he practiced for more than 40 years. In January of 2014, Bill became affiliated with the firm Pratt Aycock. **In 1970, at the request of Haywood Harris, Sports Information Director, Bill became a member of the "offensive stats" crew joining Frank Kelly and C.J. "Snuffy" Smith. In 1985, Bill became Head Statistician. Bill saw every home game from the Press Box at Shields Watkins Field/Neyland Stadium for 55 years - concluding in 2011.

CAREER HIGHLIGHTS/ PROUDESTACHIEVEMENTS I graduated from law school in 1969, at the height of the Vietnam War, and was immediately drafted. I accepted a commission in JAGC and spent four years defending and prosecuting soldiers who were very unhappy with Uncle Sam's Army. I then went into private practice with the old Baker law firm and eventually started my own firm with my brother Paul Phillips. In 1991, I was selected as a United States Magistrate Judge and, in 2002, I was appointed as a United States District Judge. I am currently serving as an active Senior Judge, which means that I do as little work as I can get by with.

CAREER HIGHLIGHTS/ PROUDEST ACHIEVEMENTS I was extremely honored to be presented the Knoxville Bar Association Governors’ Award in 2006. It was also a tremendous honor in 2016 when I was presented the Lifetime Achievement Award by the Tennessee Trial Lawyers Association. No career highlights can compare, however, to having two sons and a daughter-in-law complete their legal education and becoming admitted to practice in Tennessee. Upon graduation Gus entered patent practice with Xerox Corporation in Rochester, New York. Gus entered private practice in Chicago in 1970, where he practiced for 18 years. In 1988 he became a named partner of an intellectual property firm in Syracuse. In 2005, he joined Luedeka Neely where his practice included all phases of intellectual property law and litigation from patent, trademark and copyright application preparation and prosecution, through trial and appellate practice in all three areas. He has litigated a number of certification mark infringement matters as well as matters before the International Trade Commission.

Dalton Townsend graduated with honors from the University of Tennessee in 1965. In his senior year he was named a Torchbearer. He received his law degree from the University of Tennessee and was admitted to the Bar in 1968. While in law school, he was case notes editor for Tennessee Law Review and was a member of the Order of the Coif. After law school, Mr. Townsend served as an Army officer with duty in Vietnam. He was managing partner of Hodges, Doughty & Carson from 1997 through 2003. He served as Chairman of the Tennessee Commission on Continuing Legal Education and Specialization for 2010.

Even though he has practiced for over 50 years, he still is constantly studying and keeping up with the updates of the law. He loves the law, but also has a vast knowledge of many subjects. He is well read. He enjoys working with his clients and tries to always make the feel comfortable when they come in to his office. He exercises daily, riding his bicycle, reading how to be healthy and eat healthy. He was elected mayor of Oliver Springs where he practices, and also serves as a city attorney, and started a local weekly newspaper in the city. He was an officer in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War period.
