ROLAND ROGERS continued staff members shaved their heads to raise money and awareness for childhood cancer research through the St. Baldrick’s Foundation. About $500 was raised the first year, but that total has climbed to thousands of dollars, Dunn said. “Over the years we’ve just been able to get more people to participate every year. This is all about giving the kids an introduction to charity and helping someone,” Dunn said. Donations were collected at the school for the last four weeks and included faculty contributions and even loose change from students. The grand total announced during the assembly Friday, March 15th was $6,020. For every $5 a student donated during the drive, a “Lucky Charm” was placed in the lobby with their name on it. A random drawing was held Friday, March 15th during the event and prizes were awarded to winning students’ homerooms. The topfive student donors, who raised more than $500, stood on the stage and unveiled the total donations. The students included fifth-graders Sam DiLorenzo, Corissa Robbins, Grace Vu, Brooke Fiedler and fourth-grader Noah Pomrink.“You guys are building blocks to move on as you get older and help people globally,” Assistant Principal Michael Silvestri said. The overwhelming loudness and excitment of the students shouting “Shave Your Head” as teachers Brian Dunn, Sean McCarthy, Joe Conte, Joe Palumbo, Dave Martin, Don Adams and John McHale took their places on the stage in front of hair stylists from Tangles salon was a magnificent show of the schools huge accomplishment in such a noteworthy cause. “Mr. McCarthy, that is a head only a mother could love,” Michael Silvestri said as a stylist pulled a razor over McCarthy’s head. Then it was time to decide if Assistant Principal, Michael Silvestri’s head would be shaved. Originally the deal was that he would shave his head if $8,000 was raised in total. But that changed and he agreed to the shaving if the school succeeded in raising $2,000 in the last week, which it did. Once the group of teachers had their heads shaved, Michael Silvestri climbed on the stage and took a seat for his own haircut. As his head was shaved the students began chanting, “Shave your beard.” “Maybe next year that can be our goal if we can reach $8,000. The beard will go too,” he said.

Q. I am a contractor and I have perfromed work on several storm damaged homes, but I have not been paid. What can I do? A. You have a cause of action to pursue if you choose to engage in litigation. You can file a claim for Breach of Contract. However, you must first make sure you are in complaince the Home Improvement regulations pursuant to the New Jersey Consumer Fraud Act. A “home improvement” includes: remodeling, painting, repairing, renovating, etc. of residential or commercial property. This encompasses installing, replacing or repairing driveways, sidewalks, pools, landscaping, kitchens, bathrooms, garages, central heat, insulation installation, siding, carpeting and many more types of construction work. The New Jersey Administrative Code contains a long list of Unlawful Home Improvements Practices including misrepresentations regarding: model homes; products and materials; bait selling; the actual identity of seller; gift offers; price and financing; and guarantees or warranties. The New Jersey Administrative Code also requires: a. Home improvement contracts in excess of $500.00, and all changes in the terms and conditions thereof, shall be in writing. b. The contract must clearly and accurately set forth in legible form all terms and conditions of the contract, including, but not limited to: the legal name and business address of the Contractor; a description of the work to be done and the principal products and materials to be used or installed in performance of the contract; and the dates or time period on or within which the work is to begin and be completed by the Contractor. c. A seller must not fail to begin or complete work on the date or within the time period specified in the contract, unless the delay is for one of the specified reasons, i.e., causes beyond the seller’s control. Any changes in the dates or time period must be agreed to in writing. d. A seller must not start work until he is sure all applicable state or local building and construction permits required by state or local ordinances have been issued. e. A seller must not demand final payment or request a buyer to sign a certificate of completion until work is completed in accordance with the contract terms. If you violated the Consumer Fraud Act, you can be barred from pursuing your claim for Breach of Contract.

What exactly is diabetes? Diabetes mellitus is a metabolic disorder. Metabolism describes chemical reactions that are involved in maintaining the basic functions of cells and organisms and includes breaking down fuel to supply energy. Glucose, proteins, and fat are the three main sources of fuel. Because of the importance of glucose, hormones carefully control its levels to provide a “steady supply.” Glucose cannot enter a cell without the hormone insulin. In other words, insulin serves as a “key” to allow entry. The pancreas, located on the left side of the body (under the stomach), is an organ that produces and releases insulin in response to a number of signals, such as eating. Diabetics have abnormally elevated blood glucose levels either because (1) the pancreas do not produce enough, or any, insulin or (2) the cells do not respond properly to insulin. Thus, diabetes is a condition of “starvation amongst plenty.” Although glucose is available in the blood, and at elevated levels, it cannot enter the cells where it is needed for energy. Are there different types of diabetes? Diabetes can have different causes and require different treatments. As a result, there are 3 main classifications: • Type 1 diabetes (a.k.a. insulin-dependent diabetes, juvenile diabetes, early-onset diabetes) occurs when the pancreas does not make insulin. The cause is unclear, but is believed to be the result of immune dysfunction. It is usually diagnosed during childhood or teenage years and comprises 10% of all cases of diabetes mellitus. Treatment involves multiple, daily insulin injections for the duration of a person’s life. • Type 2 diabetes (a.k.a. non-insulin dependent diabetes, adult-onset diabetes) occurs when the pancreas does not produce enough insulin OR cells do not properly respond to insulin. It is usually diagnosed during adulthood and comprises 90% of all cases of diabetes mellitus. • Gestational diabetes can affect some women during their pregnancy. Glucose is a critical fuel for the fetus to grow and develop. If levels drop, it can be dangerous and deadly to the baby. To prevent this, the pregnant woman’s body and placenta adapt by keeping blood sugars slightly elevated. However, some women have abnormally high levels, because their bodies do not make enough insulin.

I was told I am “prediabetic.” What does that mean? This term refers to people whose blood glucose levels are increased, but do not meet the established criteria for diabetes mellitus. Your doctor will advise you to change your diet, exercise, and lose weight to hopefully prevent developing Type 2 diabetes mellitus. In some cases, you may be eligible to receive a consultation with a dietician or nutritionist and should ask your doctor. If not, there are a number of resources on the American Diabetes Association website on how to eat healthy. Additionally, it is important to follow-up with your doctor to determine if you have developed diabetes. What are symptoms of diabetes? • Frequent urination (“polyuria”). Your kidneys will “get rid of” excess blood glucose via the urine. • Increased thirst (“polydipsia”). Polyuria will result in losing water that needs to be replaced. You will find yourself feeling thirsty and drinking more water than usual. • Feeling hungry (“polyphagia”). Even though there is an adequate supply of glucose in your blood, your cells are “starving” because glucose cannot enter them. Your cells send signals to your brain to want to eat more. • Weight gain. Polyphagia can result in adding pounds, which is a “catch 22” in diabetics. Blood sugar control can worsen with increased weight. • Feeling tired and irritable. Your cells are not getting enough energy and can make your body feel fatigued and tired. We all get grumpy when we are “hungry.” • Blurred vision. Hyperglycemia can cause the lens of the eye to swell and affect your ability to see clearly. • Neuropathy. This term describes numbness or tingling. Chronic hyperglycemia can damage the nerves and the blood vessels that feed them. • Difficulty with healing. Hyperglycemia can impair your body’s ability to heal appropriately. • Infections. Humans are not the only ones who utilize glucose for energy. Bacteria, yeast, and fungi also do. Hyperglycemia can help these pesky critters thrive and this is worsened by your body’s impaired ability to fight infections. • Erectile dysfunction. Although this can result from a number of different causes, if you are over the age of 50, it may indicate that you have diabetes. How is diabetes diagnosed? Prior to lab testing and special equipment, some cultures used “water tasters” that would drink urine to determine if it was sweet tasting. Today, the diagnosis is confirmed through blood testing. • Fasting plasma glucose (FPG) test. Blood is sampled and measured for the concentration of glucose. This test is usually performed in the morning and must be done BEFORE eating or drinking anything. Normal: less than 100 mg/dL; Prediabetes: 100-125 mg/dL; Diabetes: greater than 125 mg/dL • Oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT). Patients drink a special sugary mixture and their blood glucose levels are tested after 1 hour. All women in the US who receive appropriate prenatal care undergo this test between 24-28 weeks. • Hemoglobin A1C test. This blood test measures the level of hemoglobin glycosylation (binding of glucose). Hemoglobin is present in red blood cells. And because red blood cells survive in the body for approximately 3 months, these values provide a “video” of a patient’s glucose levels over that time period, not just a snapshot.
