Reading Across America Dr. Suess Event at Assumption Regional Read Across America is a nationwide reading celebration that takes place annually on March 2nd, Dr. Seuss’s Birthday. Across the country, thousands of schools, libraries, and community centers participate by bringing kids, teens, and books together. Assumption Regional Catholic School invited The Galloway Patriot to cover their Read Across America Dr. Seuss event. Children from grades PreK through second participated in various games all Dr. Seuss related. Each child brought a book to school allowing each child the ability to swap their book for a different book. Stations were set up giving the children the option to color, make “Cat in the Hat” hats to wear, have the Cat in the Hat whiskers painted on, balloons, match the sox, and pin the hat on the Cat in the Hat. Every child in the room was happy and excited for the day’s events. See more photos at GallowayPatriot.com

The Arc to Host Traditional MonArc Awards April 10 The Arc of Atlantic County is proud to continue the tradition of our annual awards fundraiser, The MonArc Awards, a signature fundraising event that celebrates the individuals and corporate citizens who help people with intellectual and developmental disabilities achieve their greatest potential. The MonArc Awards incorporates the monarch butterfly in all its branding as a metaphor for the journey of transformation that people with intellectual and developmental disabilities can experience through support from The Arc. The event will be held on Friday, April 10, 2015 at the Carriage House located at 25 South Pitney Road in Galloway Township, NJ from 5:30 PM to 9:30 PM and will feature a complimentary wine and beer reception, an elaborate silent and chance auction, live music by the Jazz Subset of the Stockton University Faculty Band, a step and repeat photo opportunity for each guest, an inspiring video presentation and seated dinner. A focal point of the event will be a presentation of a special MonArc Butterfly Award, which acknowledges a person in our services who is emerging, finding his wings and soaring to new heights with help from The Arc and its supporters. This year’s MonArc Butterfly Award will go to Danny Philippi of Egg Harbor Township, a young man who has excelled in Golf. He is known for his amazing Tee shots and continues to show off his skills at golf competitions around the area. This past summer he won a Gold Medal in the Special Olympic Games. He graduated from Egg Harbor Township High School and has earned two degrees: an Associate’s from Atlantic Cape Community College and a Bachelor’s in communications from Stockton University. He is currently holding two jobs. He works at the Sports Authority in Mays Landing, and he works at his high school alma mater as a statistician for the football team. He was recognized in August 2014 for his dedication, passion, and achievement by The New Jersey Assembly and Senate thanks to Assemblyman Vincent Mazzeo and Senator Jim Whelan who are strong advocates for The Arc. The Arc will also present Michael Charlton, Founder of Icon Hospitality, with the MonArc Citizenship Award. Michael is the CEO and president of Icon Hospitality, which has allowed several of our consumers the opportunity to be gainfully employed, learn new job skills, and be treated like a valued member of the team. The Arc will also present Stockton University with the MonArc Corporate Citizenship Award for being a long-term partner who provides volunteers and commendable service yearly to help with our families at The Arc. See attached for more information on the honorees. Chick Pinto, 2015 MonArc Awards chairman, member of The Arc of Atlantic County’s Board of Directors and Executive Vice President at Cape Bank, says, “The MonArc Awards will bring The Arc of Atlantic County’s mission to the forefront, while celebrating the individuals, businesses and corporate citizens who have demonstrated exemplary commitment and personal initiative to advance The Arc’s mission. Our MonArc Award honorees are helping ensure Atlantic County residents with intellectual and developmental disabilities and their loved ones receive the support they need to live the lives they choose.”

PreK 3 is for Me! Many parents ponder the same questions when thinking about sending their child off to daycare or preschool. Will my child be safe? Will he/she get the same care that I give them? What will my child learn? These questions are all valid and necessary when choosing to send your children off into these environments while you as parents must go to work.

In search of these answers, take into consideration the PreK 3 program at Assumption Regional Catholic School. They can offer your child a safe, secure, and fun learning experience. The PreK3 program has two half-day schedules available, the three-day program that is Monday, Wednesday, Friday and the two-day program that is Tuesday, and Thursday. From 8:30am to 12:30pm, the children are with the PreK3 teacher, Mrs. Jennifer Saul, who is just great with the children. She takes pictures and videos and keeps the parents updated throughout the day. The children are learning the pledge of allegiance, recognizing letters, numbers, shapes, colors, capable of writing their names, mastering using safety scissors, and so much more. If you are looking for a structured classroom environment that makes learning fun then you must go for a tour and explore all that Assumption Regional Catholic School has to offer. Junk Food There is a saying: ‘We are what we eat.” If that’s the case, let’s choose not to be cheap, fast, easy, or junk. The problem is that junk food is cheap, fast, easy, and yummy, making it easy to ignore the all important fact that it is truly just junk. Dr. Nina’s What You Need to Know About Junk Food: What is junk food? The definition is foods that: • Have little to no nutritional value, resulting in empty calories. Additionally, junk food often replaces eating more nutritious foods. We don’t typically see someone eating cookies and then reaching for a fruit. • Contain ingredients that are considered unhealthy when regularly eaten • Have ingredients that are considered unhealthy in general What is considered “junk food?” • Snack foods: chips, candy bars, cookies • Fast foods: fries, chicken nuggets, shakes • Certain breakfast cereals • Soda Is junk food addicting? Yes. Ingredients in junk food (e.g. sugar) can hack into an area of our brain that releases “feel good” hormones. These hormones were designed to help us survive and provide a reward mechanism, similar to when we see someone we love. It keeps drawing us back. But in this case, it is harmful, like a moth drawn to a flame. There is evidence to suggest that refined sugar is far more addictive than cocaine—one of the most addictive and harmful substances currently known! Other studies have shown that there may be cross-tolerance between sugars and addictive drugs. For example, someone with a long history of sugar consumption can become tolerant or desensitized to the pain relieving effects of morphine. In other words, they would need more. Why does junk food taste so good? There is a term called the “bliss point.” In relation to junk food, it is the amount of an ingredient—sugar, salt, fat—that optimizes tastiness and…bliss. For example, some junk food manufacturers and fast food restaurants purposely tweak the amount of sugar that will send us “over the moon, and send their products flying off the shelves” or out of the fryer. Manufacturers and fast food restaurants may also purposely appeal to our other sensory pleasures. For instance, the feeling when we bite into a crispy piece of fried chicken or experience the oh-soperfect gooey sensation of cheese. Or, how about the aroma of French fries? These savory qualities are likely not random. Instead, they are likely due to lots of research and testing. And let’s not forget salt. It is a miracle ingredient in junk food because it not only appeals to our taste buds and preserves food, but it also masks the potentially unsavory taste of artificial flavorings. Well, at least there are regulations now that protect us from trans-fats. Right? Yes and no. First of all, trans-fats are artificially created by adding hydrogen to liquid vegetable oil in order to make it solid. Why? Because it spices up the flavor and texture, as well as prolongs the shelf life. The problem is that trans-fats increase our bad cholesterol as well as our risk for heart disease and stroke. Manufacturers are allowed to claim that a product has zero trans fats if it contains less than 0.6 grams of trans fats in a serving. But by dividing serving sizes, they can side-step the rules. Take for example a snack size bag of chips. If there are two servings per bag and each serving contains 1 gram of trans fats, the manufacturers can then reconfigure the number of servings to 4, changing the amount of trans fat to 0.5 grams per serving. Talk about the devil being in the details! To avoid this, we need to understand serving sizes, and at the same time also assess the ingredients to zero in on anything that states “partially hydrogenated” or “PHO.” A diet consisting of junk food is like having one foot in the grave and the other one on a banana peel. Despite the fact that it increases our risk for the number one, two, and three killers in the United States, it is cheaply available in every nook and cranny. Each day, 1 in 4 Americans visits a fast food restaurant. Every year Americans spend more money on junk food than new cars, higher education, books, or movies! It’s time to step off the banana peel and up out of the grave with wise healthy eating choices.
