k9 Story Time Toddler story time held on Wednesday, July 22nd was a special event. The theme was Our Community Heroes’. Officer Nick, Officer Mark and Officer Zito made a huge impact on the families joined on the lawn at the library. Officer Zito is a canine police dog with 10 years + experience. The officers put on a small demonstration to show Zito’s ability as a friend and protector of the community. At the end of the demonstration Officer Mark answered questions from the children regarding Zitos’s favorite toys, favorite foods, whether or not he liked the beach. The interest in Zito’s training by the children was remarkable. Come see all four of the canine police dogs at National Night Out on August 4th. The start time is 5:30pm. August Holidays You Probably Never Heard Of......... Looking for any reason to throw a party, there is more to August than just the dog days of summer. Celebrate all month long with a full calendar of off -beat holidays! 1. AUGUST 1ST: NATIONAL GIRLFRIENDS DAY Rest easy, boyfriends of the world, this holiday has nothing to do with you. National Girlfriends Day honors the lady friends who are there for their lady friends. If you like gendered activities, today would be the perfect day to schedule mani-pedis with your best gal pals. 2. AUGUST 5TH: INTERNATIONAL BEER DAY Back in 2007, a group of friends decided to internationally dedicate a day to “gather with friends and enjoy the deliciousness that is beer, celebrate the dedicated men and women who brew and serve our beer, and bring the world together under the united banner of beer.” And to that we say, cheers. Or salud! Or prost! Or gan bei! Well, you get the idea. 3. AUGUST 5TH: NATIONAL UNDERWEAR DAY Though we cannot prove it, we smell quite the collusion between International Beer Day and this fest of unmentionables. Whether coincidence or conspiracy, celebrating these two August 5th holidays does not have to be mutually exclusive. You may even get a free pair of undies out of it. 4. AUGUST 6TH: NATIONAL FRESH BREATH DAY If ever there were a day to stage an intervention with your halitosis-afflicted friends, today’s the day. Or, give yourself an extra brush and a bonus swirl of mouthwash and say ah. Probably a good idea to lay off the onions and garlic for the day, too. 5. AUGUST 8TH: NATIONAL DOLLAR DAY On this day all the way back in 1786, the Continental Congress established a monetary system for the United States of America. Sure, there were some Greenbacks along the way, but in our lifetime most of us have been carrying around George Washington’s in our wallets. Today, you can honor the birth of cold hard USD with a few Georges, Andrews, and Abrahams. If you decide to invite Benjamin, give us a call! 6. AUGUST 9TH: BOOK LOVER’S DAY Granted, for most book lovers every day is a day to celebrate reading, but for the sake of celebration let’s open up the floor to all interpretations of what it means to be a “book lover.” Perhaps you just love the physical feel of a book, and have no interest in cracking one open. Or maybe, this day is meant to honor books in love with each other. Today is the day to exalt book lovers of all shapes, sizes, covers, and word counts. 7. AUGUST 10TH: LAZY DAY And a lucky day because this year it falls on a Friday! Start the weekend early by doing positively nothing. 8. AUGUST 11TH: PRESIDENTIAL JOKE DAY On this day in 1984, during a sound check for a radio broadcast Ronald Reagan cracked the following joke: “My fellow Americans, I am pleased to tell you today that I’ve signed legislation that will outlaw Russia forever. We begin bombing in five minutes.” Who knew the Gipper had such a dark sense of humor? He certainly didn’t know the mic was already recording, and the tape leaked. Since this little gaffe, August 11th has lived on as Presidential Joke Day.

9. AUGUST 13TH: INTERNATIONAL LEFTHANDERS DAY For those world citizens who have found themselves in a right-handed-scissors-world, today the world honors your special gift. The other 364, we righties are still secretly jealous. If you’re in the UK on the 13th, the Left-handers Club sponsors members-only areas called “Lefty Zones.” Okay fine, we’re jealous all 365 days. 10. AUGUST 18TH: NATIONAL BAD POETRY DAY Roses are red/ Violets are blue/ You probably saw this joke coming/ But we made it anyway. 11. AUGUST 19TH: NATIONAL AVIATION DAY Franklin Delano Roosevelt laid out the ultimate burn by declaring Orville Wright’s birthday National Aviation Day. Why he chose to honor Orville over Wilbur in 1939 is a mystery to historians, but we think National Aviation Day is a great time to start preposterous rumors based on wild speculation. For example, Wilbur Wright was a figment of Orville’s imagination. 12. AUGUST 21ST: NATIONAL SENIOR CITIZENS DAY This is the holiday for which Reagan would have wanted to be remembered. On August 19th, 1988, a proclamation was made by the then-president that deemed August 21st as a national day to give older US citizens thanks and a heartfelt salute. 13. AUGUST 22ND: NATIONAL TOOTH FAIRY DAY Because anyone who can make a dollar bill magically appear under your pillow deserves a day of feting. 14. AUGUST 24TH: NATIONAL HUG YOUR BOSS DAY While it appears to have originated in the UK, the principles of this special day apply around the world. For one day of the year, set aside your frustrations and show your boss a little appreciation with a physical embrace. Please make sure to first check all company HR codes – thoroughly. 15. AUGUST 31ST: NATIONAL TRAIL MIX DAY Also known as National GORP Day. We love us a handy bag of “good ol’ raisins and peanuts,” but let’s be honest – the addition of M&M’s are what make trail mix truly great.

Sleep disturbances affect nearly 70 million Americans. This statistic is shocking. What goes on in our life and with our health, affects our slumber….Catch 22. Good sleep hygiene is vital to good health and that is why I discuss it regularly. Here are some approaches that help to wind down after a demanding day.

1. Journaling. Our concerns, wonderings or even excitement about an event, may be causing trouble with sleep. By redirecting our thoughts towards positive ones, it can help allay stress and anxiety and allow us to wind down. And by going one step further--committing our positive thoughts to paper with a pen or pencil—we can edge closer to drifting off to sleep. In a study of college students, those who spent time journaling found that their bedtime stress was decreased, along with increased sleep time and quality. Penning our thoughts can help us process our emotions, solve problems, mentally prepare for the following day, plan, and remove negative thoughts so sleep does not evade us.

2. Breathe. Deep breathing exercises have been practiced for centuries as part of meditation and relaxation techniques; some would call this age-old wisdom. Inhaling deeply sends messages to our brain to “keep calm and carry on.” The science behind this is that when our body perceives stress, it responds with increased breathing rate, heart rate, and blood pressure. By taking a few moments to breathe before bedtime, we can help put a roadblock to this physiological response and reset our bodies to a relaxed state. Think of it as our ability to implement a “circuit breaker response” to stress.

3. Turn clocks around. I have heard, read, and echoed that “Insomnia sharpens your math skills because you spend all night calculating how much sleep you’ll get if you fall asleep right now.” Watching the clock can distract us and put us on an unwelcome detour. One trick that may work: turn the clock around to face the wall or even hide it in a drawer or under our bed…while you start to count sheep.

4. View sleep as a treat .Watching our favorite musician in concert or going to a sporting game is exciting and worthy of getting there on time, if not early. What if we thought about sleep that way? Instead of viewing getting to bed as a chore that interferes with finishing our chores or spending time with family or friends or watching television, let’s think of it as a great treat. Some of the rejuvenating qualities of sleep include: good health, creating and consolidating memories, making decisions, clearing out toxins, making creative connections, learning and remembering how to perform physical tasks, and dreaming. Make sure your environment welcomes rest and relaxation (remove clutter and turn down the lights with quiet or relaxing music).

5. Evicting our beloved four-legged friends, or not? According to a poll, nearly 70 percent of American dogs and cats at least occasionally share their owner’s beds. But snuggling up to our pets may disturb our sleep with snoring, kicking, crying, or wanting to play, investigate, go out for a potty run, or scratch. One study showed that half of the humans who co-sleep with their pets had their sleep interrupted nightly. However, opponents claim that the hype is over-hyped and that our two-legged spouses and children can cause the same sleep disturbances. And too, there are those that believe settling in with a pet helps them relax and fall to sleep faster. Figure out what works best for you and your loved ones. 6. Eat light at night. We have all been there. It is late, and our stomach is growling and preventing us from falling asleep. However, we have heard over and over again that snacking before bedtime is bad (but so is having food cravings that are keeping us awake). Late night snacking has been blamed for causing nightmares, acid reflux, and packing on the pounds. There is some good news: we can satisfy those hunger pangs without those side effects depending on what we eat and how much we eat. Choosing snacks less than 200 calories that are rich in protein and complex carbohydrates can help put us on a fast track to la la land. 7. Maintaining a set bedtime. Saturday and Sunday were meant to catch-up on the “to do” list and special errands, but not necessarily sleep. According to experts, getting an extra 2-4 hours of sleep in the morning can have the same effects as traveling across time zones. This makes it more difficult for us to go to sleep on time on Sunday night, making Monday feel like we really are jet lagged. These tactical tips may help put restful sleep on the right track to getting the necessary amount--and quality--of ZZZ’s that our body needs. Let’s remember that sleep is an essential component to being at our best physical, mental, and physical health. And, of course -- sweet dreams!
