This year’s Veteran’s Day celebration in Galloway at the municipal complex drew a standing room crowd. Many Galloway residents crowded into the township’s meeting room to show support and pay respect to our many veterans. The Absegami Choir sang beautifully and was led by Cheryl Breitzman. It was great to have Galloway’s young people salute our veterans in that way. Ike Rucker, Marine Corps veteran, was master of ceremony. Herb Davis, head of Galloway’s “Veteran Advisory Board”, organized the event with the help of other board members. Jim Craine sang the National Anthem and a song written by Ike Rucker entitled “In All of My Colorful Majesty”. Boy Scout Troop #77 led the Pledge of Allegiance. A wreath was presented by Galloway Township Middle School Student Council representatives, Raynah Katzen and Maxine Livingston. Guest speaker Major Benjamin Robbins talked about New Jersey’s hero veterans. Prayers were led by Reverend’s Nicholas Dudo and Dean Bult. Taps was preformed by Joseph Ward. SPA DAY AT GALLOWAY HEALTH CENTER The room filled with anxious faces for their afternoon of pampering on Friday, November 15th, hosted by the great crew from Cloud 9 Day Spa. Debbie, Megan and Barb had the room set up with exactly what you would expect when walking into a spa, smells of relaxing oils, peaceful sounds of nature, lightly dimmed and happy welcoming staff. Both men and women from the health center enjoyed facials, hand and arm massages, manicures, and fresh make up. Each resident was offered hot tea, coffee or water while they waited for their turn. Some of the staff from Cloud 9 Day Spa has or had family that is residents at the Health Center. It was wonderful to see how the residents where extremely grateful for the pampering and the company, with the holidays approaching this made them feel special and appreciated. What a wonderful way to give back. It’s all about paying it forward. These residents once were where most of us are now. Giving them one afternoon of pampering and conversation is priceless. The Health Center at Galloway will be holding breakfast with Santa on Saturday, December 14, 2013 from 8am-10:30am proceeds to benefit resident council fund. Tickets are $4 for adults and children 10 and under $2. Menu includes French toast, scrambled eggs, bacon and sausage, has browns, Danish, fruit and beverages. Photo opportunities with Santa, craft table, community vendors, poinsettia sale and Chinese auction. For additional information and reservations please call 609-748-9100.

FREE ASSISTANCE FOR GALLOWAY’S EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT For those of you that have not seen the military trucks at the Magnus Mud Run giving children rides, we thought we should let the community know that the Galloway Patriot has purchased some military vehicles to assist the township in the event of an emergency. After Hurricane Sandy it became evident that the National Guard and government agencies were overwhelmed by the number of people needing assistance. Local townships like Ocean City and Brigantine have begun acquiring military vehicles like the 5 ton troop carrier trucks the National Guard used most recently in the Colorado floods to augment their emergency management programs. These enormous trucks have the ability to go through deep water and snow as well as carry people out and supplies in. Our 5 ton even has a huge winch to recover other emergency vehicles that become stuck or move very heavy debris. While the trucks are extremely useful in an emergency, they represent a very large financial burden to the townships which own them. They are expensive to register and insure. They are maintenance intensive and it can cost thousands just to replace a tire. While the other townships chose to accept those costs and acquire the trucks we, the Knutson family, owners of the Galloway Patriot, decided to purchase the trucks and cover all the associated costs. This seems to be the best way for our town to have access to these powerful military vehicles without Galloway residents being burdened with the costs associated with ownership. You will see the truck around town at community events and charity events like the recent food bank food drive golf tournament. If you have a charity event that you would like us to bring the truck too, let us know.

SMALL BUSINESS SATURDAY IN ABSECON’S DOWNTOWN Yesteryear charm blends seamlessly with modern amenities at Small Business Saturday’s Absecon Holiday Fair, which aims to appeal to residents and visitors of all ages. Featuring carolers, a choir and a Dr. Jonathan Pitney, M.D. character as well as a set of heated tents and a wine tasting, the event is planned in conjunction with American Express’ Shop Small Business Saturdays. There will be artisan crafters as well street vendors along the avenue of existing downtown stores. A charity auction that includes more than 25 gift baskets will benefit Faces 4 Autism. Intentionally and conveniently, the event will link the shopping plazas along the White Horse Pike corridor with the downtown by offering shuttle service via complimentary trolley service. Pick up will be at the Absecon Marketplace plaza on the pike; drop off at New Jersey Avenue. “We need to celebrate and support all the businesses in Absecon from border to border, ABCD is here to offer resources and promote patronage of our entire business/professional community,” said Vicki Phillips, Vice President of Absecon Business and Community Development. Absecon’s official tree lighting service is set for that evening, a highlight that will be attended by Santa Claus. To add a little extra magic – literally – to the day, entertainer Jon Bronco will delight young and old alike. It’s this kind of personality, attention to detail, and uniqueness that the Absecon Business and Commercial Development and the Absecon Community Affairs Committee hope will make Saturday a success. The Holiday Fair will be 1 pm to 6 pm on Saturday, Nov. 30 on New Jersey Avenue between Mechanic and Station Streets.

Dr. Nina Radcliff Board Certified Anesthesiologist, a member of the American Society of Anesthesiologists, and licensed to practice medicine in California, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey Can Somebody Put Out That Fire? My Bank Account is Going Up in Smoke! Would you like to have an extra $3,120.75 in your pocket for the holidays? No, this is not a “work from home” or “get rich quick” gimmick. It is the annual cost that a one pack per day smoker in New Jersey spends. Smoking not only increases the risk for heart disease, stroke, and cancer, it can really burn a hole in your wallet. And did you know that for each cigarette a person smokes, it can reduce their lifespan by 11 minutes? With 20 cigarettes in every pack, that adds up to a whole lot of minutes and starts stretching into hours. There’s no dollar value that can get that time back. Let’s not forget about the indirect costs such as home fresheners ($10/month) and higher dental, health, and life insurance costs. If that’s not enough to get you or someone you love feeling the pinch, how about the fact that a smoker’s car sells for approximately 9% less than a non-smoker’s car? For a $10,000 vehicle, that is $900 less in your pocket. Additionally, homebuyers are also less likely to purchase a house that smells like an ashtray. With the housing market still in critical condition, it may require the seller to replace carpets, paint the walls, or deodorize the house to get buyers interested. Here are some helpful tips to stop you or a loved one from having their wallet go up in smoke: 1. Don’t wing it. Once you make the decision to quit, create a plan. Know why you are you doing it: money, health, loved ones, all of the above. Know what resources are at your disposal-- support groups or blogs--so you do not have to reinvent the wheel. Know how you are you going to do it: gradually, cold turkey, nicotine patch. Know how you will deal with intense cravings so you don’t succumb to those intense urges. Afterall, as they said in GI Joe “Knowing is half the battle.” 2. Commit. Write out your plan and sign it, like a contract. Consider having witnesses so you further cement that commitment. By including your family, friends, and co-workers they can provide support and encouragement. 3. Get through the cravings. The average, “intense” craving lasts 3 minutes. However those 180 seconds can feel like an eternity. I have heard several of my patients attest to the power of taking slow, deep breaths and focusing on their favorite person, place or thing. Other tips to distract yourself can include taking a walk, keeping your hands busy (squeeze a ball, play with a paperclip, send an email, call a friend), using an oral substitute (mint, hard candy, celery stick, gum, carrot, sunflower seeds), and drinking water (may decrease the urge). 4. Expect an initial tough road. The first 2 days have been shown to be the most difficult. But knowing that can help you see the light at the end of the tunnel. Consider creating distractions such as socializing, taking a road trip, or a mini-vacation. But do not pack up those cigarettes! 5. Spoil yourself. With the $3,120.75 a year that you are saving, consider living a little. How about that cell phone upgrade, taking a trip, or buying a new wardrobe? What about a retirement fund? Did you know that the cost of smoking per decade is $31,207.50? Over 30 years, if you compounded the interest even at just 3%, you would have over $146,000! Now that’s a whole lot of cheddar. 6. Do not give up. If you fail (I hope not), try, try, try again. Literally and figuratively, your life is at stake. Go back to the drawing board and get to the bottom of things. By doing so, you will place yourself in a better position to quit the next time around.
