Galloway Township Business Association Has a New President continued from front page....... Deputy Mayor Tony Coppola took the podium and spoke to the association encouraging them to continue to be an educational and advocacy group for businesses in Galloway. Coppola said he is very optimistic for the future of the Galloway Township Business Association and Galloway Township. Deputy Mayor Coppola was proud to announce that the Lenox property is being acquired by Railing Dynamics, Inc.. RDI, makes vinyl railings and accessories for do-it-yourselfers. This is huge news for the Galloway area. The full manufacturing site will create about 400 jobs in Galloway. Galloway Township will be heading in the right direction in 2015. The Galloway Patriot newspaper took a few moments with the new GTBA president, Ava Holly Lewis, to get her perspective and opinions. GP: What is the role of the GTBA? AHL: To help new businesses and existing businesses grow through networking and business education. To bring a sense of community bonding to our Galloway residents, businesses and surrounding areas. GP: In your opinion, what is the greatest benefit the GTBA should bring to its members? AHL: Helping businesses create new business and build business relationships through community awareness. GP: Many people focus on the importance of Atlantic City to our local economy. Senator Whelan has a bill in the legislature now that would shift a large property tax burden from the casinos to local Galloway businesses and residents potentially doing even more damage to an already weak local economy. Where do you stand on this issue? AHL: I am not familiar with this bill. Of course, I would be opposed to this action. GP: Do you have any big event plans for Galloway Township? AHL: I’m working with a few city officials, our immediate past president and the Galloway Patriot. There are several events that have been discussed. Information and updates can be found at GallowayBusiness.com and more frequently on our FB page (GTBA). The night ended with Ava Holly Lewis telling everyone the hopes and dreams she has for the Galloway Township Business Association as well as the events and concepts she has coming up in the near future. If you are interested in joining or attending one of the many events the Galloway Township Business Association produces please visit www.gallowaybusiness.com.

PROPERTY TAX PROBLEMS LOOM Recently, the Galloway Patriot decided to ask Senator Connors (the State Senator for Galloway Township and Port Republic – Senator Christopher J. Connors, Assemblyman Brian E. Rumpf, Assemblywoman DiAnne C. Gove, Representing the 9th Legislative District), a few questions about the bill presented to the legislature on the issue of Atlantic City’s intent to shift its property tax burden to surrounding communities. Local residents feel as if they are being victimized by the mismanagement of Atlantic City and its casinos. Question #1: The recent bill put before the state legislature by Senator Whelan seeks to shift an enormous amount of property tax burden from Atlantic City to surrounding communities like Galloway and Port Republic by substantially reducing the property tax requirements of the casinos and having others pay the difference. Where do you stand on this issue? Response: Only if it is determined to be clearly beneficial to the taxpayers of Galloway and Port Republic will our Delegation vote for any component of an Atlantic City-bill package. Accordingly, we will examine the tax impact on our constituent municipalities while, at the same time, considering input provided by local and county officials in serving the interests of our mutual constituents. Too much is at stake for local taxpayers to allow for any grey area in the legislation that is ultimately considered on Atlantic City ’s future. Question #2: Many Galloway and Port Republic residents would like to see Atlantic City provide the jobs and positive economic stimulus promised by the casinos but it is obvious, that after years of mismanagement by both the City’s government and the casino operators, Atlantic City has become more of a detriment to the area then a benefit. How does the city move forward from here without cutting more jobs and becoming a bigger burden to the surrounding area? Response: First, Atlantic City must stabilize its own government finances, which can be achieved through spending reductions, streamlining services to achieve greater efficiencies and other reforms. Mayor Guardian has been out in front of this issue since first taking office and, appropriately, has received accolades for his ongoing efforts. High taxes and an ineffective local government are never conducive to attracting new businesses or, for that matter, retaining existing locally-based businesses. While we believe that the casino industry will still play a substantial role, there is a strong consensus among policy makers, officials and area residents that Atlantic City diversify its economy. This diversification must include transitioning from an economy based heavily on casino-related business to one that plays to the City’s strengths including, but not limiting, serving as an top-tier entertainment/event venue as well as a beachfront destination. Question #3: Do you believe that Stockton-University’s purchase of the Showboat will benefit the community? Response: Unequivocally yes. The establishment of a Stockton campus is consistent with the needed and supported transition from a predominantly casino-based market to include a more extensive higher education presence within the City. Jobs will also be created by at the new campus. Further, we know firsthand from speaking with Stockton representatives that, in addition to providing the highest level of education to its students, the College has the community’s best interests at heart. By establishing an island-based campus, the College has a vested interest in playing a significant role in Atlantic City ’s revitalization. Question #4: There are many local residents that can-not manage another increase in their taxes. Is it likely that you will be able to prevent Senator Whelan’s bill from passing? Response: If any of Atlantic City bills will lead to a tax increase for our constituents, we stand vehemently opposed to their passage and will vote No. However, legislation only needs 21 of 40 votes in the Senate and 41 out of 80 votes in the Assembly to achieve final passage and, subsequently be sent to the Governor’s desk. Senator Whelan is in the Majority Party in the Legislature. The Majority has enough votes, with some to spare in each House, to pass legislation without the Minority Party’s support. Question #5: Finally, for years, you have been trying to get the CRDA to help pay for a full interchange at exit 40 but Senator Whelan has stood in the way. Politics aside, do you feel that Senator Whelan is representing his district or is his only interest in furthering the agenda of Atlantic City and the big banks that own the casinos? Response: In all honesty, we cannot speak with respect to what Senator Whelan’s motivations are in not supporting our legislation. From the outset, we have attempted to work with Senator Whelan in establishing a full Interchange at Exit 40. While our primary focus is on serving the interests of Galloway , specifically to expand the Township’s economic base and increase commercial ratables, we believe that a full Interchange would benefit both ours and Senator Whelan’s Legislative Districts both of which include constituent municipalities that are located along and in proximity to Route 30. A full Interchange at Exit 40 would also be beneficial to Atlantic City . It would be a prominent infrastructure improvement along a state roadway connected to Atlantic City which residents living in neighboring communities who work in Atlantic City use to commute. Accordingly, we will continue our legislative efforts to establish a full Interchange.

Chocolate As Forrest Gump iconically stated: “Mama always said life was like a box of chocolates. You never know what you’re gonna get.” However, unlike many people of situations in life, I have rarely met a chocolate I did not love. And here is some “yummy” news about chocolate that is sure to fill our hearts with even more warmth and happiness (especially as we give and receive chocolate to our loved ones this Valentine’s Day…). While not quite a vegetable, chocolate is derived from the cocoa plant and contains some of the health benefits of dark vegetables. Chocolate is rich in flavanol, an antioxidant that protects the body from damage caused by free radicals (akin to nuclear waste) that are formed by normal bodily processes. In fact, chocolate contains nearly 8 times the amount of antioxidants found in strawberries! Anyone up for chocolate dipped strawberries? Dr. Nina’s What You Need to Know: About Chocolate, our Key to Happiness and Health: Heart Health Benefits You may have heard it said, “Forget love, I’d rather fall in chocolate.” Fortunately, we may not have to choose between chocolate and a healthy heart. Flavonol relaxes blood vessels and can lower blood pressure. Additionally, it has been shown to decrease “bad cholesterol” levels and the ability to form clots that can cause blockages in blood vessels. What this translates to is decreased levels of heart attacks and atherosclerosis (fatty plaques inside your vessels). Weight In a perfect world, chocolate would have no calories. While this may not be the case, there is some good news: dark chocolate provides a sense of satiety, or feeling full. By decreasing our cravings for sweet, salty, and fatty foods, it functions as an “appetite suppressant” and can decrease our overall consumption throughout the day. However, this news does not give us carte blanche to consume as much chocolate as we want. Because chocolate still contains fat and calories, moderation is the key to get the best of both worlds. Pregnancy Could a balanced diet for the pregnant woman mean dark chocolate in both hands? Studies have shown that women who consumed dark chocolate daily during their pregnancy were better able to handle stress, had babies who smiled more and were happier, and had a decreased incidence of pre-eclampsia. Pre-eclampsia is a dangerous complication of pregnancy where blood pressures become elevated and protein is found in the urine. Stress Reduction Keep calm and eat…and smell…chocolate. Eating dark chocolate has been shown to increase our “feel good” chemicals in our brain. Additionally, it decreases stress hormone levels. Studies have also shown that just the smell of chocolate can increase certain brain waves and trigger relaxation. So, while “you can’t buy happiness, you can buy chocolate, and that’s kind of the same thing.” Sun protection In addition to applying sunscreen, consuming dark chocolate can decrease sunburn and keep our skin smoother, thicker, less rough, less scaly, and moister. The antioxidant effects of dark chocolate are believed to counteract the free radicals (akin to nuclear waste) that are generated as a consequence of exposure to UV radiation. Cough While your doctor may not prescribe chocolate for that cough, it may function as a home remedy. Chocolate contains a compound called theobromine that appears to suppress coughing almost as effectively as codeine. In addition to being delightful to your taste buds, chocolate lacks codeine’s side effects of feeling sleepy or dull.

Chocolate is near and dear to our hearts...and even more so in the month of February. With its potential for a number of health benefits, chocolate does not have to be a forbidden love, guilty pleasure, or given up. But like with anything, moderation is key. And so aptly stated, our love for chocolate may be the key to happiness and health. Like Forrest, I may not be a smart woman, “but I know what love is.”

WINE TASTING FOR CHARITY The Noyes Museum held their monthly educational wine tasting in conjunction with White Horse Wine and Spirits. The goal to these tastings is to help consumers increase their knowledge about wine while surrounded by extraordinary art. This months wine tasting theme was New Wines for the New Year. All the wines tasted were geared towards wines and regions that many may not have tried before. This months wines were Quinta Avelada, Vinho Verde, Domaine de Pajot, white blend, Santa Digna, Reserve Syrah, and Tabernero, Borgona. Each month a local charity is chosen to donate the profits to help support these great endeavors. This month the charity was “On the Go Cafe a Family of 5” which is a charity that helps children with Autism and ADHD learn social and emotional skills that will help them in their future. John, Tressa and their three children, Trevis, Justus, and Vicotry formulated this program to help their children learn how to transition and self regulate in different environments, and settings. The personalized training is unique to the children’s individual needs, which aids in teaching social and communication skills, eye contact, problem solving, how to apply and use common sense, team work, organizational skills, critical thinking and much more. A wonderful evening in support of a wonderful charity.
