COOKIE WALK Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton Church held its first annual Santa’s Christmas Cookie Walk on Saturday December 13th. Church members cracked eggs and reached deep into the flour bins to prepare for this event. Approximated, thousands of cookies were available for sale. A total of 150 volunteers committed themselves to baking anywhere between two dozen and fifteen dozen cookies each. When the doors to the parish hall opened, visitors could see lines of tables filled with trays of delicious homemade cookies and much more. Each visitor received a bakery box to fill with as many cookies as they wanted. Students from Holy Spirit High School helped to make sure the cookie walk went as smoothly as possible. The cost of cookies was $8 per pound with specialty items individually priced and displayed. A successful first event for Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton Church.
VFW WREATH CEREMONY Each year the Absecon NJ VFW conducts a wreath ceremony during the holidays. We understand we have Veterans Day in the fall, and Memorial Day in the spring. But our service men and women sacrifice their time and safety every single day of the year, to preserve our freedoms. At many homes, there is an empty seat for one who is serving, or one who made the ultimate sacrifice for our Country. We honor our veterans every day. And we think there is no better time to express our apprecation, than during the hustle and bustle of the holiday season. On Saturday, December 13, 2014 at 10 am the VFW Post and the Ladies Auxiliary held the Wreaths Across America ceremony to honor our Veterans with speeches, prayers and the presentation of the wreaths as well a 21 gun salute. These ceremonies are held across all of America and beyond.

2015 MAGNUS MUD RUN DATES The 2015 Magnus Mud Run schedule is set. This year the event will run twice at the Galloway Municipal Complex on Jimmie Leeds Road. It will take place June 13 and August 15. Both are Saturdays and both will begin at 11AM. We will also set-up the course for the Boy Scouts at their “Camporee” the first weekend in October. Registration for the events will begin shortly at GallowayPatriot.com The Magnus Mud Run is a great family and community event. Best of all it is FREE. We are looking for volunteers to help with set-up and break-down as well as obstacle management. If you are a business owner and would like to set-up a booth/table to hand-out samples or other free items, let us know. We could also use the help of builders to help us design and build even better obstacles. We will be setting up a “wish-list” on Amazon.com for items needed for the event. The link will be located at MagnusMudRun.com. We appreciate any help that is provided. We would like to thank the strong support of Clayton Self Storage for providing a storage unit and Home Depot for providing materials like lumber and hardware. Of course the great guys at Galloway’s Fire Departments for helping out so much on their own time. To find out how you can help please email us at GallowayPatriot@gmail.com
TOYS FOR TOTS ANOTHER BIG YEAR We want to recognize our fellow Marines for their enormous effort and extremely hard work producing “Toys for Tots” this year. Tens of thousands of toys were collected and distributed to needy children in Atlantic County. This year’s coordinator, Charlie Fields, did a great job pulling it all together. Dunkin Donuts donated $1500.00 in addition to toys, Harrahs Casino and Resorts Casino both donated large amounts of toys. Thank you to all the businesses that hosted a box or event. Thank to everyone that donated a toy to make Christmas special for a child. The United States Marine Corps Toys for Tots program has been helping make miracles come true for children in need for over 60 years. To find out how you can help please visit ToysforTots.org or GallowayPatriot.com.

NEW YEARS RESOLUTIONS How many of us can look back at 2014 and say that we feel as though we starred in the spaghetti Western “The Good, the Bad, the Ugly?” Though I am no Clint Eastwood, I for one, can. As we take down our Christmas stockings, many of us find ourselves taking stock of ourselves and seeking improvement (or redemption) with our New Year’s Resolutions. Though no one can go back and make a brand new start, anyone can start from now and make a brand new ending. Here’s a look at my 7 resolutions. 1. To not have to see these resolutions on my list next year. Did you know that only 8% of people actually achieve their resolutions? To improve my chances, I will draw a clear map to help me reach my destination without getting lost. In other words, I will create an easy-to-follow plan and hold myself accountable, quarterly. 2. Love myself. I’ve heard many variations of this sentiment, but if we are not good at loving ourselves, we will have a difficult time loving anyone. We will resent the time and energy we give another person that we aren’t even giving to ourselves. In other words, set the tone and the standard. 3. Put things in perspective. “If you have food in your fridge, clothes on your back, a roof over your head and a place to sleep you are richer than 75% of the world.” Still not convinced? How about “If you woke up this morning with more health than illness you are more blessed than the million people who will not survive this week.” Signed, sealed and delivered: “If you have never experienced the danger of battle, the agony of imprisonment or torture, or the horrible pangs of starvation vou are luckier than 500 million people alive and suffering.” 4. Gratitude journal. I recently started chronicling--every morning and every night--at least three things that I am grateful for. It has been shown that there are a number of health benefits when we have a genuine feeling of gratitude: better sleep and eating, increased energy and lifespan, and decreased overall illness and depression. 5. Get some “ZZZ’s.” Not having a good night’s sleep can make even the best morph into the Incredible Hulk. There is also a Catch 22 with sleep and caffeine consumption; we drink caffeine to keep us alert, but then it keeps us awake at night. In 2015, my goal is to stay Dr. David Banner by removing the sleep wreckers that surround me. Bye bye Lou Ferrigno. 6. Tech cleanse. I admit, I used to be a “tech-a-holic.” My day begins with an eye-opener of checking my email, which wouldn’t be so bad if I didn’t check my emails and texts right before going to bed, and throughout the day. I have almost been hit by a car (on more than one occasion) because I was texting while walking across the street. I began recognizing and making changes in 2014, and will continue to unplug and power down in 2015. 7. Protect the skin I’m in. A year back, I had moles that needed to be biopsied. Fortunately, they were negative. But did you know that skin cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in the United States with one in five people developing it over their lifetime! More shockingly, one American dies from skin cancer EVERY HOUR! To that extent, I vow to cover up, spread on sunscreen, not let the weather fool me (ultraviolet lights are present even during the winter months), and get annual skin exams.
Hopefully, we can label 2015 as “The Good,” and continue to shed the bad and the ugly. Our chances will improve greatly if we make an active, deliberate effort, along with looking at things through rose-colored glasses and holding ourselves accountable. In addition to remembering to write 2015 instead of 2014 as the date, let’s resolve to be awesome.
GALLOWAY POLICE LIFE LINE PROGRAM Life Line Program was set up to help the elderly in keeping their independence. Many senior citizens live on their own, and many are disabled. The welfare of our parents and grandparents is something that we often worry about, especially family members who live along. This free service is something that can help put everybody’s mind at ease. Every morning the members of Life Line call police dispatch to check in. If dispatch does not hear from a member by a designated time, they will give a call. If there is no response a police officer is immediately sent to check on the well being of the resident. It’s that simple! If you or a family member would like to join please contact senior services at 609-652-9262

TINY SERVICE DOG Lucy is a micro Yorkshire Terrier. Standing 5.7 inches tall, and weighing in at a whopping 3 pounds, Lucy can fit comfortably in your hands. But don’t let her diminutive size fool you — this dog has tons of personality! She is certified by the Guinness World Book of Records s the smallest working dog. Lucy was the guest of Mrs. Farquharson and Mr. Bartolone. She and her trainer, Sally Leone Montufar, visited Mrs. Farquharson’s 4th Grade classroom on Friday, December 5th. Sally trained Lucy to be a therapy dog, and together they visit schools, hospitals, and hospices. Lucy can even do the “Stop, drop and roll” when teaching about fire prevention! And to top it off, Lucy was awarded the Hero Dog citation from the New Jersey State Senate for her acts of kindness!
