UNIQUE WAY TO GIVE GIFTS Almost every man knows that jewelry is the best choice when shopping for a gift. Resist that ridiculous urge to buy her a kitchen appliance or a gym membership. Kitchen and household appliances are necessities and should never be treated as gifts. Ladies don’t get all teary eyed over a new vacuum even though you may over a new cordless drill. A gym membership, really, do so at your own peril. Often, a woman will tell you that they would just like to go to a nice dinner. I say that speaks volumes about them. They choose something that you two can share and also spend time together. Doesn’t someone like that deserve a little effort from you when it comes time to celebrate a birthday, anniversary, or special occasion? We came across this great homemade milk chocolate treat that doubles as a hollow gift presentation package. It’s called a “Crush Cake” and it is made by the people at Chatters Baskets in Hammonton. Now, they sell the crush cake with your choice of candies inside but we strongly suggest that you be creative and toss in a few pearls or a tennis bracelet. For the most important of gifts, the crush cake would make an excellent way to present an engagement ring. If you would like to do it after a great dinner, we suggest Windrift in Avalon, where you can also get a great room with ocean views, Philippe Chin’s in Somers Point with great views of the bay, or dinner at Renault Winery with a romantic walk through the vineyards. To get a crush cake, call Mary at Chatters in Hammonton. 609-704-3131 Story by Chuck Knutson

South Jersey Car Shows & Cruises Beer CraZy by Contributing Writer, Nick Gaudio Great Lakes Edmund Fitzgerald Porter is one of the most drinkable porters available on the market today. It has the expected aroma of roasted coffee with an additional hint of hazelnut. It pours a solid black color, reminiscent of espresso, with a soft caramel head. Initially, its flavor is of bitter roasted coffee, but its aftertaste is of semisweet dark chocolate. For a very smooth and enjoyable porter, look no further than Great Lakes Edmund Fitzgerald.

Back to the Future in Styling?

Nowadays what’s a car designer to do? We’ve all seen the throwback styling of the 60’s hitting the streets with American muscle. The Camaro, Challenger and Mustang all taking huge cues from their forefathers. Muscular, beefy, lots of horsepower and striking resemblance’s to the past. But what about the world of exotics and high performance sports cars? Should they or will they continue to look futuristic? Or, will design elements lean toward a more retro look?

See More at ExoticCarResource.com

Take Porsche for instance. There really is no mistaking a 911 for exactly what it is. The wide rear stance, the rounded roof line and the sloping nose. All things that are waiting to launch you into triple digits or help you carve up the canyon. Either way, the appearance of this car is simply timeless Porsche. On the other hand, let’s look at Ferrari. The California and its mouthy grille certainly evoke plenty of Ferrari emotion. The F12 Berlinetta again says “Ferrari” but in a magnificently aggressive way. Or, consider the 458; simply nothing less than awesomeness. The styling of the 458 makes you want to keep a tourniquet and some anti-venom handy. Wicked looks and Ferrari power to boot. For these three, styling is certainly modern with a lean toward futuristic. Another leap into the future is the Lamborghini Avantador. The new Raging Bull on the block looks amazing and continues the “Countach” heritage by keeping the sharp edged spaceship design that has nothing to do with the past and all about moving to Lamborghini’s vision of the future. But to have a debate on styling and where it could be heading, we must look at the Morgan EvaGT. At first stare, you don’t know whether to grab the Grey Poupon or your driving gloves. Classic lines yet sharply sculpted. Impressive power train included and Morgan is accepting orders for a nominal deposit. You can continue to ponder the retro considerations when looking at the Spyker C8 Aileron. The very old school polished aluminum dash is a bit reminiscent of mid century American hot rodding. Speedo and tach are analog while an LCD display sits between them for those so inclined to look at it. Mix of the old and new. How about the Ford GT. Exotic in every sense of the word but a clear step back in time while keeping enough of the future to not look “old”. Masterful to say the least in execution. Even Bentley continues to style the front clip of the Mulsanne with a nod to the past. Those big round headlamps and ample grille harken to much earlier days. While the fit and finish is certainly modern in terms of lines and smooth edges, the front simply takes you back in time and lets you know in no uncertain terms “I’m a Bentley”. Exotic and high end sports car auto makers may want to further tap into more of a retro mindset, much like the modern American muscle car has. The reality is baby boomers continue to treat themselves to the better things when they can; considering they’ve been the most financially successful generation. Although the past 4 years’ economic hardships may have slowed things down a bit, designers may want to tune into that demographic and draw upon it with more retro features in exterior and interior styling. Bringing design features from the past, when times were pure and the future looked a little brighter, may stir the market and give rise for everyone’s desire to take a step back once and a while. Designers may consider a swing toward pre-1945 styling or a slant toward more 1950’s and 60’s aviation influence. Simple touches like the way in which dials, displays, buttons and switches are manufactured can greatly alter look and feel. So as you ponder the next best thing, consider this. Do we really need another car based on the shape of a wedge? Should designers continue to focus on producing sexy body styling and in doing so incorporate elements of the past? Wouldn’t a little bit of history help us all think back to a time when things were just a little less stressful and easy going? Who knows, maybe taking a couple steps back may propel the next exotic into the future. Author: Erik DelBuono – ECR Staff Writer
