South Jersey Car Shows & Cruises Beer CraZy by Contributing Writer, Nick Gaudio After a week’s vacation down the shore in Wildwood, I can summarize the joys of a New Jersey summer night to just a few luxuries. To make sure you enjoy the full experience of the shore, make sure to grab dinner on the boardwalk, follow it up with a cone of Mister Softee custard (at Pine & Boardwalk in Wildwood and make sure to say hi to my buddy, Carl), and finish off the night with a slightly chilled Hoegaarden Witbier. This Belgian White Ale is best served 10-15 minutes after removing the bottle from the refrigerator as its flavor intensifies at a slightly warmer temperature. It pours a cloudy yellow color, slightly opaque due to the unfiltered yeast and has a subtle citrus aroma. Best served with a lemon wedge to draw out the citrus flavor, it also has a strong flavor of cloves and wheat, giving it a flavor that is thicker than its appearance yet still refreshing on a warm night. At a mild 4.9% ABV, you’ll still be able to get up and go for a run on the boardwalk in the morning!

ECR Exclusive – Can you buy an “exotic” car and drive it every day? Can you use it for work, pick up the kids and go on vacation, all while holding the wheel of your favorite dream car? Let's take the wagon kids!!! This is a complicated issue. For one, every person has a different definition of “exotic”. If you consider a new Camaro exotic, than most definitely yes. What if your definition of exotic includes names like Bugatti, Ferrari and Lamborghini to name a few? Can these cars get you through the daily grind? In the perfect world, we would all get in and drive our favorite car all day every day. Heading to the office would be an adventure and the drive to lunch would be a daily break into exotic car heaven. What better way to start your day than listening to the sweet music of a 12 cylinder Italian symphony singing “good morning”. How sweet it would be. The reality is that for most of us, this would be impractical. For starters, most “exotic” cars do not provide a back seat. Taking the family to the beach for the weekend would be a tough task in your new Bugatti Veyron. Many of the cars we tag as exotic are wide, low to the ground and not the best on speed bumps. Fueling some of these cars is not cheap and the day to day gas bill could take the fun out of the trip. The above problems may cover some of the “exotic” cars that we take out on the weekends and keep covered up more than fired up. But, these are not the only types of exotic cars. I don’t think anyone would argue that Porsche makes some pretty exotic cars. From the 911 to the Panamera, Porsche definitely fits the ECR definition of exotic. Yet, many of these models are purposely built to be driven hard and driven every day. The back seat in the latest 911 rendition is even somewhat practical, unlike many of the earlier models. A recent ECR review of the Aston Martin Vantage discussed this very question and confirmed that the Vantage had manners that would clearly make it a valid possibility for a daily driver. So, as you read this you may be thinking, “Everyone knows Porsche’s can be driven every day, so how does this answer the question?” Let’s cut to the chase. The ECR answer to this question is a resounding yes! Many modern exotic cars can be daily drivers. Which car of course depends on your budget, lifestyle and terrain. Lets explain. Today’s modern exotics have come a long way as far as technology. The days of harsh “race” ready suspensions, manual steering and heavy clutches are a thing of the past. While I enjoy (and often prefer) the features of the older exotic cars and embrace the history, those old traits made “daily” driving difficult. Makers like Ferrari, Lamborghini, Porsche, Aston Martin, Lotus (the list goes on and on) have taken drastic steps to make many of today’s cars practical to own for everyone who can afford one. Features such as paddle shifters, multimode drivers settings, power seats, functional air conditioning, satellite navigation and many more of today’s common amenities are now regularly seen in our exotic choices. All of these features create a “chameleon” effect by giving the driver everyday practicality and, with the flip of a switch, race car performance. Life is good!!! At a recent event ECR covered we spoke to Brett Sokolow from Malvern, PA who had arrived in his beautiful 2011 Ferrari California. During the conversation, Bret stated that he has put 10,000 miles on the California in the first year alone. He added that the Ferrari is his “daily” driver and has been completely reliable and practical. His family regularly uses it for long trips and he drives the car nearly every day to the office. Brett’s story is just one example of the recent trend of modern exotics getting more and more road use. Buying these works of art and placing them in hibernation, only to be unleashed during sunny days, is not as common as it once was. This article could go on and on about the pros and cons of daily driven exotics. How does it affect the cars value? What about the maintenance costs? How about insurance premiums? How do you fend off all the beautiful models clamoring for your attention day in and day out? (Ok…Maybe I have gone too far). These are more questions of financial means, personal choice and dedication than a matter of practicality. The bottom line is that today’s exotic car makers are producing much more reliable and practical cars. They have accomplished this task without compromising the performance we would expect. Engineers continue to amaze with their ability to produce speed, comfort and style in spite of stricter regulations and watchful consumers. We are in a time where if you have the means, you can own a premier sports/exotic car and enjoy it for what it was built to do….drive. And, the family can enjoy it as well. So, with that said, go fire up that Enzo and head to the office. Why not? ECR says it’s OK!!!!! Author: Robert Caldwell – ECR Staff Writer ExoticCarResource.com
