South Jersey Car Shows & Cruises Beer CraZy by Contributing Writer, Nick Gaudio I spoke with Josh from Fegley’s Allentown BrewWorks in Allentown, PA. The Allentown location opened in 2007 (compared to 1998 for the Bethlehem location). They brew a Blonde, IPA, Triple IPA, Wit, Lager, and many other seasonals or specialties. All of their beer is available in either 12oz bottles or 750mL bottles. The employees enjoy an exciting and dedicated work culture where they arrive at work at 6:30AM and brew 2-3 batches of beer each day. I sampled the Hop’solutely Triple IPA and Space Monkey Raspberry Saison. The IPA had a wonderfully sweet, hoppy flavor complimented by its own bitterness as soon as it was swallowed. Space Monkey started out with a sweet, raspberry flavor and dried out as it went down. Look for their wide variety of experimental and unique flavors at your local liquor store in the South Jersey area!

The Vigneto Rally was a huge success. The Society Page event was the coolest event ever in South Jersey with a large contingency of exotic supercars including Ferraris, Aston Martins, Lamborghinis, Rolls Royce, Porsche, Corvette, Viper, and more. The rally travelled through South Jersey starting from the New Jersey Motorsports Park and stopping at great wineries like Coda Rossa in Franklinville and Bellview in Landisville. We finally stopped at Renault Winery for a reception and dinner banquet. See more at VignetoRally.org and watch for other great Society Page events coming soon.
The Society Page Takes a Look at the Maserati 4.5 Costin Zagato Author/Photographs: George Chopek - Society Page Auto Expert See More at ExoticCarResource.com
ECR Exclusive - Until 1956, Maserati focused on small engined race cars with engine sizes between 1.5 litre and 3 litres. However, more powerful Ferraris, Jags and Astons were typically taking the checkered flag. As such, Maserati decided to develop a car that would beat the manufacturers. Enter the Maserati 4.5 Costin-Zagato. Produced from 1956 through 1958, the car featured not only a more powerful engine but also a lightweight chassis. Two engines were actually developed. One, a 3.5 litre 6 cylinder and a 4.5 litre 8 cylinder. The 6 cylinder was used in the in the 1956 Mille Miglia with some not so hot results. So, work continued on the 8 cylinder configuration and near the end of 56’ it was installed. The work paid off as the engine was rated at 400 horse and was mated to a 5-speed gearbox. The motor also sported 4 Weber carbs for plenty of breathing capacity. With all this power the braking systems were also improved to handle this beast. These improvements continued to pay off. In 1957 at the Argentinian 1000km race, the 450S led many laps but was sidelined by clutch problems. Subsequently, at Sebring, the 450S snagged a victory while being driven by Juan Manuel Fangio and Jean Behra. Victory was not without pain however as mechanical issues arose at the Mille Miglia and Nurburgring. With these events under their belts, the Maserati team aimed for the 24 Hours of LeMans. Maserati designed a special aerodynamic body for this event. Unfortunately, with Stirling Moss at the wheel, this configuration performed poorly and turned slower times compared to a 450S with a roadster body. Before retiring from this event due to rear axle issues, Moss powered the car to a second place spot. All was not lost as a victory was achieved at the Swedish Grand Prix only to be tarnished by another team 450S retiring due to transmission problems. With wins and failures creating what was surely a rollercoaster of emotion at Maserati, the team focused on the final race of the season the Venuzuelan Grand Prix. Maserati entered 3 cars in this event, two 450S’ and one 300S. Surely hopes ran high but to no avail. Stirling Moss’ 450S was destroyed after a collision. The second caught fire while taking on fuel. However, the car was not incapacitated and was put back on the track. As fate would have it, while performing a pass, the teams two remaining cars collided and were destroyed. No luck, no wins and certainly dashed dreams. With such a checkered existence, who would want to remember any of this? Well, I for one (as many others I’m sure) seek to remember, memorialize and continue to focus on an important part of Maserati racing heritage. Did we forget the incredible design of one of the most powerful engines of its time? Or perhaps you neglected (how dare you) to notice how incredibly beautiful this car really is? I can’t help but think they were on the leading edge coming into their own on developing a respected racing presence. Finally realizing what they were capable of achieving. Rules changes in 1958 rendered the 450S ineligible to race. Most of the remaining 450S were shipped to the U.S. and were raced with some success. Had the 450S continued, who knows what would have transpired. More mechanical issues or more victories? Certainly one thing cant be debated: The cars awesome track presence, power and stunningly good looks.
