South Jersey Wine Better All The Time Story by Chuck Knutson

One of life’s greatest affordable luxuries has always been a good bottle of wine. If you enjoy wine, you must be aware of the many wineries and vineyards in Southern New Jersey. Years ago a few farmers in Southern New Jersey started planting grapes simply as an alternative to the acres of corn, tomatoes, and other deliciously superior South Jersey produce. It did not take very long before substantial efforts were made to produce quality wines from these Southern New Jersey grapes. The production of wine in Southern New Jersey has, if you will excuse the pun, graduated to an even higher level as one of the state’s best colleges, Stockton State College, will be opening an Educational Center in Hammonton and is planning a Viticulture and Enology education initiative that is tentatively scheduled for launch in fall 2013. Today, much of the Southern New Jersey wine industry has matured and evolved. There are many high quality wines produced right here in our region. In fact, a discussion I recently had with a Cape May County vintner, provided me an even deeper understanding of just how serious Southern New Jersey wineries have become about producing world class wines. You see, I was inclined to believe that wines produced in Southern New Jersey would all be similar and largely exhibit the same characteristics. It seems that not only are the wines produced in the many locales of South Jersey different but they can vary greatly. I was lucky enough to talk to someone so passionate about this subject that I found myself even more excited about Southern New Jersey wines and their potential to compete in a discriminating world market. Here is a brief excerpt from the Natali Vineyards web-site explaining the uniqueness of lower Cape May County for wine production. “The Cape May peninsula has a unique climate. For the tender European wine grapes (Vitis vinifera), the Mid-Atlantic region is hostile: too cold, too humid, and too rainy. But lower Cape May’s climate is moderated by two large bodies of water, the Atlantic Ocean and the Delaware Bay. The configuration and climate parallels a famous French wine-growing region, the Bordeaux, which lies between the Atlantic and the lower Gironde River. Like the area known as the Medoc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Sauvignon Blanc do very well in this climate.” There is not any doubt in my mind, that with time, given the similar circumstances, all Southern New Jersey wineries will produce wines of equal or better quality than the French. In a recent story in “The New Yorker” magazine about comparing wines from France with wines from New Jersey, the following was said, “But now, in an even more surprising turn of events, another American wine region has performed far better than expected in a blind tasting against the finest French châteaus. Ready for the punch line? The wines were from New Jersey……. So go ahead and buy some wine from New Jersey. Continued on next page SPMag.co

But if you really want to maximize the pleasure of your guests, put a fancy French label on it. Those grapes will taste even better.” I say forget the “fancy French label”. Be proud of our Southern New Jersey wine makers. This story in The New Yorker proves the quality of Southern New Jersey wine but shows its greatest weakness, perception. We must make people realize that their often ridiculous caricature view of New Jersey, is absolutely wrong. The best way to do this, is for all of us to invite friends and family from other states to join us for wine tastings and vineyard tours. Pack them in the car with a picnic lunch. Take them for a tour of Southern New Jersey’s wineries on one of the many wine trails designed for this purpose. This weekend Renault Winery (the longest operating winery in the country) hosts the “Summer Chill Wine Festival”. Join us as we enjoy wines from more than 10 wineries in Southern New Jersey all at one location on Friday and Saturday. For those of you that love exotic sports cars and fine wine, please visit VignetoRally.org. The Vigneto Rally is the coolest wine event in the United States and exists solely to promote the Southern New Jersey wine industry. We are currently working on plans for the next Vigneto Rally and hope to make the next one an even bigger event. The Society Page (Knutson Publications) has launched a website to support the wine industry of Southern New Jersey. The website, SouthJerseyWine.com, will list events, tastings, information, and more about wineries and vineyards in South Jersey. The site is free to view and free to Southern New Jersey wine producers that wish to list their events. If you would like to assist us with promoting the Southern New Jersey wine industry, please contact us.

South Jersey Car Shows & Cruises Beer CraZy by Contributing Writer, Nick Gaudio This week’s beer is a celebratory treat, Southern Tier ’s Crème Brulée. Drinking this Imperial Milk Stout is the best way to enjoy a liquid dessert. It pours very dark and its crème colored head settles very quickly. The first and most obvious flavor is that of butterscotch with a perfect mix of caramel and vanilla. However, it still holds the overall flavor and mouthfeel of an imperial stout. By reading the description, many beer drinkers will shy away from this beer as too sweet and candy-like, but even the most hard core stout fan will appreciate the way the geniuses at Southern Tier were able to mask the 10% ABV into a delicious drink that can be enjoyed by all categories of beer drinkers.

Some Like It Hot… But Most Work Best When They’re NOT. Author: Steve Amadio, ECR Staff Writer See More at ExoticCarResource.com

Thermal coatings can be used to reduce high temperatures in vehicle components, like exhaust manifolds and engine compartments. Lowering the temperature in these parts helps to boost horsepower in the vehicle overall. The horsepower boost is especially noticeable in vehicles with a lot of horsepower already. Thermal coatings primarily include ceramic coating of metal components. There are other types of thermal coatings, such as heat wrap, which can be used for specific purposes. However, for this article, we will focus on the ceramic coatings. Most ceramics can withstand temperatures of 1,400 degrees Fahrenheit. The durability in extreme temperatures makes ceramic a good choice for exhaust manifolds, exhaust pipes and headers. The ceramic coating on these parts will help prevent rust. At the same time, the coating will not burn off because of the extreme temperatures. Ceramic On Rotors Is a Sharp Look… Another valuable use of ceramic is on the rotors behind the wheels. Rotors tend to oxidize and rust over time taking away from the overall appearance of a vehicle. At Checkers, we provide a service for removing the wheels, ceramic coating the rotors and replacing the wheels. The ceramic-coated rotors provide a clean look that is a nice backdrop for the wheels. Insulcoat Your Components Like the Space Shuttle… Another form of ceramic coating is called insulcoating. It is used for insulating components. Insulcoating allows hot exhaust gasses to travel out of the car and not absorb through the walls of the parts to enter the car. This insulating coating also provides minimal gains in horsepower. Insulcoating is applied in wet form to the inside of the pipe. The process takes multiple days to fully cure. When dry, insulcoating has a chalky white appearance. It is similar to materials used on the bottom of the space shuttle to minimize heat transfer to the cabin and cargo bay. Compared to powder coating, true thermal coatings have a more limited selection of colors. The most popular colors are black and tungsten ceramic. Specialty shops can provide ceramic in a chromelike bright silver, as well. How Thermal Coatings Are Applied… The application process includes preparation, application and curing. • Each part must be sandblasted using media specific to that part. • Next, each piece should be cleaned with a solvent cleaner. • Third, the parts are pre-baked to remove any oils, greases, contaminants, dirt, etc. • After the part is properly prepped, the ceramic or insulcoating is applied wet. • The part is allowed to air dry until fully cured. • Parts may be baked to expedite the curing process. Professionals Only – Please… You should have ceramic coating applied by a professional shop. While ceramic paint can be purchased locally, it is not the industrial level that you really need. Generally, the type of ceramic paint that you can purchase locally can only withstand temperatures up to 500 degrees and changes color beyond that temp range. If you have any additional questions about ceramic coatings, you can reach Steve through http://www.checkerspowdercoating.com. The phone number at Checkers is 609-965-6300.
