INTERVIEW WITH A BEER EXPERT I had a conversation the other day with the “Beer Expert” of BeerExpert.com. I was intrigued by information recently passed on to me about the “secondary” market for rare and vintage beer. I was completely unaware that beer was being traded in much the same way wines are. I was even more surprised to find out that some bottle can fetch in excess of $1000.00 on Ebay. Matt Simpson, the beer expert, is considered one of the most knowledgeable in the industry. In addition to his awards and paid beer consulting jobs, Matt is also “BJCP certified” (Beer Judge Certification Program). Our regional beer expert, Jon Henderson (owner of The Atlantic City Beer Festival), has told me that Matt is a considerable source of knowledge on craft beer. I asked Matt to take a few minutes for a phone interview so that we could learn more about this interesting market for rare and vintage beer. I asked Matt what makes a good beer for those with a beer cellar. I asked the question tongue in cheek not realizing that apparently, many people do have beer cellars. I am told that storing beer is done about the same way as one would store wine for the long term. Matt tells us that beer with a high alcohol content is best for storage as it has a propensity to age well and often tastes better after a few years. It can-not be pasteurized or filtered and it needs to have some inherent yeast in the bottle. Matt suggests beers like Dogfish Heads big beers or other similar high IPA beers. Matt is very passionate about craft beer and can overwhelm you with information so forgive me if my note taking didn’t keep up. Matt tells us that there are almost an infinite number of craft beer recipes. There are so many types of hops, barley, and yeasts plus then there are the barrel treatments where beer is kept in a whiskey, wine, or bourbon barrel for a time. I asked Matt to name a big dollar beer in the secondary market. He tells us that the “Stone Complete Vertical Epic 02.02.02” commands around $1000.00. He further explained that some brewers are label dating their beers to create a vintage. Sam Adams seems to enjoy playing in this secondary market with releases of their “Infinium”, Millennium”, and “Utopia” beers. Matt lives in Atlanta now but is originally from Toms River. His web-site, BeerExpert.com is a wealth of knowledge for the craft beer enthusiast. He also has a beer app to help you choose great beers. Make sure to check out Matt’s web-site. This interview has made me thirsty. Salute Chuck Knutson Page 8

JOKES AND MORE Bubba and Junior were standing at the base of a flagpole, looking up. A woman walked by and asked what they were doing. "We're supposed to find the height of the flagpole," said Bubba, "but we don't have a ladder." The woman took a wrench from her purse, loosened a few bolts, and laid the pole down. Then she took a tape measure from her pocket, took a measurement and announced, "Eighteen feet, six inches," and walked away.Junior shook his head and laughed. "Ain't that just like a dumb blonde! We ask for the height, and she gives us the length!"

Simple Syrup Ingredients: 4 cups water 2 cups organic sugar Simple Syrup Directions: To make the simple syrup, bring water to a boil and add sugar. Whisk to dissolve the sugar and boil for 3 minutes on high. Remove from the heat and chill. This can be made in advance and will hold in the refrigerator for 3 weeks. Also perfect for cocktails and other desserts. Popsicle Directions: In a small bowl, mix together the beer (cold) and the simple syrup (also cold) with a whisk. Add cream if using. Pour this mixture into the popsicle molds, ice cube trays, silicone molds or small plastic cups. Place into the freeze, making sure the mold/container is level. Freeze for 612 hours in a 0°F or below freezer, until completely solid. Since 40% alcohol cannot freeze until 173°F, the higher the alcohol content of the beer might change the texture of the finished popsicles. If you don’t want to make popsicles, but like the idea of frozen beer, try the same recipe, but place the mixture into a small casserole pan. Place in the freezer and after 1 hour, using a fork, scrape the mixture. Repeat this scraping every 30 minutes, until the mixture can be formed into an icy pile. This is similar to a Italian Ice called granita.

Teed Off By Brian Crompton Golf Pro at Renault Winery 609-965-2111 Everyone that plays golf wants to do three things. Hit the ball further. Drive the ball straighter. Shoot lower scores. Those are all very reasonable desires for a golfer. Lets focus on these three aspects of the game that most golfers would like to improve upon. How do you hit the ball further? Increasing your club head speed is the best way. However, I doubt anyone is getting younger and stronger so odds are that you are not going to drastically increase your club head speed. Realistically, just take your time in the swing and concentrate on making solid contact. How do you drive the ball straighter? There are so many different factors that contribute to hitting the golf ball straight. Best advice… Get a lesson. Not from your buddy, not from your neighbor’s friend, not from your father in law. Go to your local club professional it will be worth the money spent. How do you shoot lower scores? There are three easy steps. Step one, forget about hitting the ball further. Step two, practice chipping. Step three, practice putting. Follow those three easy steps and you will shoot lower scores. If you continue to struggle with your game you could always try having a few drinks during your round. It may not help your swing, but you’ll care less about how many double bogeys you make!

South Jersey Car Shows & Cruises Beer CraZy by Contributing Writer, Nick Gaudio Great Lakes Edmund Fitzgerald Porter is one of the most drinkable porters available on the market today. It has the expected aroma of roasted coffee with an additional hint of hazelnut. It pours a solid black color, reminiscent of espresso, with a soft caramel head. Initially, its flavor is of bitter roasted coffee, but its aftertaste is of semisweet dark chocolate. For a very smooth and enjoyable porter, look no further than Great Lakes Edmund Fitzgerald.

Jaguar XK120 – The Start of a Sports Car Revolution Author: George Chopek, ECR Staff Writer See More at ExoticCarResource.com
The Jaguar XK120 was manufactured in England by Jaguar Car Ltd. between 1949 and 1954. The XK was introduced at the 1948 London Motor Show and showcased the new XK engine. The XK engine was a dual overhead cam 3.4-liter, straight 6 with an alloy cylinder head and twin side-draft SU carburetors producing 160 horsepower. This motor was fairly advanced for the times. ‘The Motor’ magazine reported a top speed of 124.6 mph and a 0 to 60 time of 10 seconds. This performance made it one of the most powerful sports cars of its time. The XK120 was the first sports car produced by Jaguar after the war. The name ’120' came from the 120 mph top speed the car could attain. Sir William Lyons founded Swallow Sidecars in 1922, which created motorcycle sidecars and automobiles in the 20’s and 30’s. Upon introduction of the all new SS 100 Lyons wanted a more sensual name for his company. He worked with his advertising agency and settled on “Jaguar”. Obviously, the impression one gets when thinking of a Jaguar typically runs to speed and agility. Lyons is said to be quoted as saying “a car is the closest thing we can create to something that is alive”. Alive indeed. Lyons requested chief engineer William Heynes to develop a sedan that could appeal to a post war marketplace. The first new “Jaguars” manufactured featured hand built aluminum bodies. About 200 of these were built before Jaguar moved to a more mass production XK to meet increasing demand. For model year 1950, the car sported a steel body with alloy trunk, doors and bonnet. The 120 chassis featured independent torsion bar front suspension, recirculating ball steering, leaf springs at the rear and front and rear drum brakes. In the United States, Jaguar and MG are credited with starting the American sports car craze. The styling and performance is what Americans began to crave. (To address these desires, Chevy introduced the Corvette.) With the performance the XK delivered, it was thought to be the best sports car in the world. And with performance comes racing. In the early 50’s road racing was beginning to take off. International Motors was the authorized Jaguar dealer in California. Roger Barlow, its owner, helped found the California Sports Car Club. Many early racers came through Barlows organization such as Stan Nowak, Richie Ginther and John Von Newman. In 1949 the XK took the first two places at Silverstone. Sterling Moss took the Tourist trophy at Dundrod and Silverstone. Image, performance, styling and mass appeal. Mass appeal of the kind that drove people to crave exactly the kind of car Jaguar was producing. Take yourself to a time when American cars in the 30’s and 40’s were full-fendered, curvy and sensual. Demand for automobiles was increasing significantly. Most of what the market offered was transportation and comfort oriented. Then along comes the XK120. So sensual in itself it created a new demand and expectations for American carmakers to deliver. That long bonnet, short tail and fenders reaching over and in front of the tires provide the distinct image of a long lean cat ready to pounce. The XK120 is certainly worthy of its performance reputation equaled only by its sexy curvy body. And now, some 50 years later, the Jaguar is a classy cat that has only gotten better with time.
