Vision

The Korean Culture and Information Service (KOCIS) is tasked with the mission of promoting Korean culture overseas and helping to upgrade the country’s national image.

Mission

Overview

KOCIS was launched in 1971 as an arm of what is now the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism. KOCIS serves as a communication channel to promote Korea overseas, to shed light on international cultural exchanges and to bring that news back to Koreans. KOCIS publicizes Korean Government policies, the President’s summit meetings and all types of international cooperation. In addition, KOCIS works with a variety of organizations to host arts and culture events, including performances, exhibitions, music festivals and film festivals. KOCIS reaches out to opinion leaders worldwide as well as the international media, professors and artists from around the globe. KOCIS operates 31 cultural centers in 27 countries and supports culture and information officers at Korean embassies and consulates around the world.


Main Missions

Planning and Operations Division

· Formulating plans to promote Korean culture overseas · Establishing networks of government and non-government organizations for cooperation in the promotion of Korean culture overseas · Carrying out administrative tasks related to general affairs, preparing for the National Assembly’s audit and inspection, drawing up the budget and settling accounts

Global Culture Promotion Division

· Organizing cultural events to promote Korea and international cultural exchange programs · Formulating and implementing plans to provide support for organizations of Korean culture and arts professionals in and outside of Korea · Providing support for Korean Cultural Centers around the world and culture and information officers stationed abroad

Global Communication and Contents Division

· Producing and distributing promotional publications about Korea for use overseas · Producing and distributing videos to promote Korea overseas and carrying out joint projects with international broadcasters · Operating www.korea.net, the official multi-language web portal of the Korean Government, and other social networking platforms

Foreign Media Relations Division

· Analyzing and assessing the tone of news articles on Korea by international media and responding to erroneous and distorted reports on Korea · Assisting international journalists in their coverage of Korea and providing support to promote summit diplomacy · Translating Korean documents into other languages for use by the international media as well as producing and distributing promotional materials on special occasions

Korea Cultural Centers: Hubs for Spreading the Korean Wave The Korean Cultural Centers play a role as outposts to promote Korean culture across the globe. They provide a variety of special programs for local residents to experience Korean culture firsthand. Through 31 Korean Cultural Centers in 27 countries, Korean culture is ready to meet the world. Korean Cultural Centers Operate K-Culture Experience Halls Where the Traditional and Modern Come Together ●

K-Culture Experience Halls are designed to promote Korean culture in a more

interesting fashion through the convergence of such traditional cultural elements as hansik (Korean food) and hanbok (Korean clothes) with cutting-edge information and communications technology. Korean Cultural Centers work hard to help Korea’s culture go global and promote its cultural products around the world by revisiting the value of traditional culture through K-Culture Experience Halls. Visitors can come and enjoy a wide range of content, including Korea’s leading brands and quality cultural products. Korean Cultural Centers Provide Various Korean Cultural Programs Tailored to Local Tastes Korean Cultural Centers provide a variety of programs for local residents to have hands-on experience of Korean culture. They include lectures and seminars on K-pop, the Korean language, taekwondo and calligraphy as well as the screening of Korean movies and dramas and the staging of Korean cultural performances. All these activities combine to enhance an interest in Korea.

KOCIS Promotes the Essence of Korea’s Culture around the World The Korean Culture and Information Service (KOCIS) helps the Korean Wave continue to spread by means of a variety of cultural events and exchanges.

Promotion of Korean Culture Korea Connects with the World through Cultural Events on the Occasion of Summits and in Celebration of Anniversaries of Diplomatic Ties â—?

o support summit diplomacy, KOCIS organizes a wide range of cultural events T in consideration of specific needs and interests in host countries, including taekwondo demonstrations and K-pop concerts, providing venues for mutual understanding and empathy. KOCIS also lays the groundwork for cultural exchanges in celebration of the anniversaries of diplomatic ties. For instance, hundreds of cultural exchange events were held in Korea and France during the 2015/2016 Year of Korea in France and Year of France in Korea to celebrate the 130th anniversary of diplomatic ties between the two countries.

KOCIS Strives to Share Korea’s Culture and Arts with the World �

OCIS works to establish the foundation for cooperation with overseas K organizations through cultural exchanges. As part of cultural festivals that are taking place abroad such as the Korea-Japan Festival in Tokyo and Festive Korea in Hong Kong, it organizes various cultural events featuring taekwondo and K-pop. In addition, it also helps publicize Korea by providing support for participation in such regular exchange events in other countries as Korean film festivals and the Korea-China-Japan Cultural Festival.

Cultural Content for Non-Koreans KOCIS Operates Various Programs for Expatriates in Korea to Experience Its Culture ●

OCIS holds “Hello, Mr. K,” a K-culture concert, and provides various other K opportunities to make it easy for foreign students, migrant workers and multicultural families in Korea to enjoy various aspects of Korean culture, including K-pop songs, B-boying, traditional performing arts and mask dances. By also running programs designed to give them an experience of the UNESCOdesignated World Heritage properties in Korea and Korean history and culture, KOCIS helps them adapt to life in Korea as well as deepen their interest in and understanding of the country.


KOCIS Produces and Distributes Various Korean Wave Content ●

Korean Wave content produced by KOCIS is centered around the themes of The Korean creativity and passion. KOCIS publishes various booklets and produces videos on Korea’s natural landscape and culture in many different languages, and it is also making efforts to help non-Koreans better appreciate the charms of Korea, thus encouraging them to travel to Korea. It also runs www.korea. net, the internet portal that represents the voice of the Korean Government and promotes Korea by providing news in nine different languages, including English, on Korea’s culture, history, politics and the economy.


Korea in the World KOCIS serves as a bridge between Korean culture and the cultures of other countries, carving out an era of communication and interaction.



KOCIS Helps Enhance Awareness of Korea KOCIS provides various programs to assist with news coverage in a bid to help the foreign media accurately understand Korea and create empathy through solid partnership.

Proper Understanding, Accurate Communications KOCIS Operates the Foreign Press Center Korea (FPCKorea) to Strengthen Communications between the Government and International Media ●

PCKorea was opened in 2013 to provide foreign journalists in Korea or F visiting from overseas with services to assist them in covering the news. FPCKorea holds press conferences, arranges interviews and organizes field trips to cover policy implementation. FPCKorea invites foreign journalists to Korea to promote a proper understanding of the nation and, by assisting them in making special reports, helps improve Korea’s status as a country with a sophisticated culture.

KOCIS Conducts Close Analysis of Overseas Media Reports on Korea ●

OCIS analyzes Korea-related news in the international media. Through this K effort, it works to prevent reports that contain distorted facts about Korea at an early stage and provide accurate information so that a proper understanding of Korea can be promoted.

KOCIS Assists in Activities to Promote an Accurate Understanding of Korea via Cooperation with the Private Sector â—?

OCIS cooperates with non-government organizations to assist in their activities K to correct inaccuracies found overseas. It is operating a group of global monitors to identify and correct inaccuracies that can be found in every corner of the world. It also assists non-government organizations in the production of booklets and videos on Korea and supports public contests, photography exhibitions and international seminars related to the East Sea and Dokdo Islets.
