O
ver the past three months, the “Personal Update” has been focusing on end times events as predicted in the Bible. In particular, Dr Chuck Missler has been expounding on the circumstances and events surrounding the four horsemen of Revelation chapter 6. With each seal that is broken by Jesus, a judgment goes forth from the throne of God. To the untrained observer, these terrifying events can create a sense of panic and deep sorrow. But, for the informed Bible student they reveal an overdue judgment of a world that has wilfully rejected God’s offer of salvation through faith in the completed work of Jesus Christ on a cross in Judea two thousand years ago. Near the end of His earthly ministry Jesus instructed His disciples on how they should react when confronted with the events leading up to His second coming. Jesus said, “And when these things begin to come to pass, then look up, and lift up your heads; for your redemption draweth nigh.” Luke 21:28 KJV We would do well to remember these words of wisdom from the One who holds our future in His loving hands. Commonly referred to as pale, or green, the manuscript term used here is actually χλωρός chloros: green, yellowish pale, or livid.2 (gangrene?) And furthermore, this one is accompanied by a duet (note the plural pronoun in v.8): one for the body and one for the soul. Setting aside the theological distinctives between these two, we are also confronted with the dispatching of one person among every four on the Planet Earth!

Tuberculosis: new highly resistant strains of TB are of increasing concern. This airborne germ has also been known to carry HIV, allowing it to “piggyback” and become contagious in the air. Staphylococcus aureus: Staph bacteria is the number one cause of hospital infections. They are blamed for 13% of the nation’s 2 million hospital infections each year, which kill 60-80,000 people each year. A new strain of Staphylococcus aureus showed resistance for the first time against vancomycin, which has been around since 1970 and is used when other antibiotics fail. The increasing resistance is attributed to overuse of antibiotics and the failure of some patients to take their medicine properly. Some patients stop taking their medication once they feel better but before the infection has been knocked out, enabling the hardiest germs to survive and multiply. Ebola: Ebola virus kills as many as 90% of its victims in little more than a week. Connective tissue liquefies, every orifice bleeds. In the final stages, Ebola victims become convulsive, splashing contaminated blood around them as they twitch, shaking and thrashing to their deaths. No specific treatment or vaccine for the virus is available, although a number of potential treatments are being studied. The disease was first identified in 1976 in two simultaneous outbreaks, one in Nzara, and the other in Yambuku, a village near the Ebola River from which the disease takes its name. Between 1976 and 2013, the World Health Organization reports a total of 24 outbreaks involving 1,716 cases. The largest outbreak is the ongoing epidemic in West Africa, still affecting Guinea and Sierra Leone. As of 9 May 2015 this outbreak has 26,683 reported cases resulting in 11,022 deaths.

Biological Weapons If chemical attacks are frightening, a biological weapon poses an even worse nightmare. Chemical agents are inanimate, but bacteria, viruses and other live agents may be contagious and reproductive. If established in the environment, they may multiply. Unlike any other weapon, they can become more dangerous over time. Bacillus anthracis: Rod-shaped, gram-positive, anaerobic, sporulating microorganism, the spores constituting the usual infective form. Causes anthrax. If bacteria are inhaled, symptoms may develop in 2 to 3 days. Initial symptoms resembling common respiratory infection are followed by high fever, vomiting, joint ache and labored breathing, and internal and external bleeding lesions. Exposure may be fatal. Vaccines and antibiotics provide some protection unless exposure is very high. This is the most dangerous bacteria a terrorist could use since, once released, it will present a problem for decades. Gruinard Island, off the coast of Scotland, remained infected with anthrax spores for 40 years after biological warfare tests were carried out there in the 1940s. If Berlin had been bombed with anthrax bacteria during World War II, the city would still be contaminated. Yersinia pestis (Pasteurella pestis): Rod-shaped, non-motile, non-sporulating, gram-negative, aerobic bacterium. It causes bubonic plague, the Black Death of the Middle Ages. lungs, symptoms (fever and delirium) may appear in 3 to 4 days. Untreated cases are almost always fatal. Vaccines can offer immunity and antibiotics are usually effective if administered promptly. Bubonic Plague: Is the most common, transmitted to man by the bite of an infected flea, the disease being perpetuated by the ratflea-rat cycle. The flea bites are usually on the lower extremities where the bacilli spread rapidly through the lymphatic system, enlarging the lymph nodes in the groin. The bacilli escape from the nodes, invade the blood stream and produce a generalized infection. Other parts of the body that are affected are the spleen, lungs, and meninges. The first recorded use of biological military application occurred in the 14th century, when an army besieging Kaffa, a seaport on the Black Sea in the Crimea in Russia, catapulted plague-infected cadavers over the city walls. Pneumonic Plague: is transmitted by inhalation, spreads rapidly until the entire lung is involved in a hemorrhage, pneumonia process. The disease is usually fatal, the patient dying of suffocation and/or general toxemia. Botulinum Toxin: is the most powerful poison known. Botulism is produced by Clostridium botulinum bacteria. Symptoms appear 12 to 72 hours after ingestion or inhalation. Initial symptoms are nausea and diarrhea, followed by weakness, dizziness and respiratory paralysis, often leading to death. Antitoxin can sometimes arrest the process. Other biological agents include Vibrio comma (cholera) and Salmonella typhimurium (typhoid fever). (These few were excerpted from a list of several dozen alternatives under study.) The Private Laboratory Growing a biological arsenal is frighteningly simple. Since it divides every 20 minutes, a single bacterium can give rise to more 10

than a billion copies in 10 hours. A small vial of microorganisms can yield a huge number in less than a week. For some diseases, such as anthrax, inhaling a few thousand bacteria (collectively smaller than the period on this sentence) can be fatal. A major biological arsenal could be built with $10,000 worth of equipment in a room 15 feet square. One can cultivate trillions of bacteria at relatively little risk to one’s self with gear no more sophisticated than a beer fermenter, some protein-based culture, a gas mask, and a plastic overgarment. Biological Detection System A large population cannot be adequately protected against a biological attack. Vaccines can prevent some diseases, but unless the causative agent is known in advance, such a safeguard may be worthless. Antibiotics are effective against specific bacteria or classes of biological agents, but not against all. Moreover, the incidence of infectious disease around the world has been rising from newly resistant strains of bacteria that defy treatment. In this era of biotechnology, novel organisms can be engineered against which vaccines or antibiotics are useless. Anticipating that research can come up with a defence against attack organisms whose nature is not known in advance appears fanciful.

This article begins a multi-part series building upon some of the ideas and concerns revealed during the aforementioned presentation1 beginning with an explanation of this author’s meaning of an “everyman strategic perspective.”

Chris and his wife of nearly 30 years host regional events and conferences serving primarily Northeastern United States and South-eastern Canada. He speaks and writes on many topics and relies on his background in public education as a teacher and curriculum writer for much of his presentations and publications. He presented at the 2014 Strategic Perspectives conference during a workshop on the topic of “Education as the Everyman Strategic Perspective” and currently moderates a forum on Ed u c a t i o n a va i l a b l e t h r o u g h m e m b e r s’ dashboard.

“Strategic” “The plural Dutch mathematician and chess of anecdote grandmaster Max Euwe opined, “Strategy is not data.” requires thought, tactics require observation.” st In our busy and hyper-informed 21 century lives, we are confronted with all sorts of fifteen-second observations masquerading as news or data. Economist Roger Brinner features on his website3, “The plural of anecdote is not data.” Most analyses of education rely on a couple of stories “when I was a kid” along with a video shared through social media. To develop any useful strategy for understanding or addressing the educational challenges of tomorrow, KI purports to be that sort of think tank which provides for informed and investigative dialogue among its members through which participants can be like the “sons of Issachar who understood the times.”4 “Perspective” Perspective in this usage can be defined as “the faculty of seeing all the relevant data in a meaningful relationship.”5 The requirement of multiple witnesses is infused throughout the Bible; surely the phrase “two or three witnesses” is familiar to our ears. [see Deuteronomy 17:6; Matthew 18:16; 2 Corinthians 13:1; 1 Timothy 5:19; 1 John 5:8; Revelation 11:3] In today's court system, the testimony of credible corroborating witnesses provides evidence which compels the jury or the judge to side with the prosecution or the defense who is introducing into evidence said testimony. KI through its three tracks – Berean, Issachar, and Koinonos – equips members to develop this type of perspective. And so, education serves as the everyman strategic perspective. Our schools are currently a prominent issue covered by the news media. Every president of the United States aspires to be heralded as the education president. education and the burgeoning student debt needed to pay for it. Yet, unfortunately there is something more sinister going on and we unpack this by looking through history both long ago and in the past century. Citizen or Co-worker? Education professionals and engaged parents share a growing awareness and concern of the dubious goal of current education reform. The phrase “college and career readiness” is infused throughout the reformers rhetoric and this mantra serves as a euphemistic catch phrase that camouflages a more disturbing trend. The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation is well invested in Achieve Inc which dedicates an entire webpage to this idea.6 But what does college readiness mean? The state of Massachusetts permits a student with an overall high school GPA [“grade point average”] of 2.7 to substitute it for passing a college-administered placement test. Since a B generally equates to a 3.0 GPA, this effectively concludes that every B minus student in Massachusetts is college ready.7 And for most college students, their four year degree prepares them for a career like teaching or business administration. I endured as a public school teacher in New York State, the transition of high school mathematics from an educational discipline to an employee’s skill. Though high school mathematics arguably changes the least among all the areas of study, the state curriculum (and consequently textbooks and assessments) changed four times within three decades! These changes were defended first to make mathematics more inter-disciplinary and ultimately to make mathematics students career ready. Beware this vacuous mantra of “career and college ready” or its more transparent cousin, “job ready.” Liberal (Latin: liber or “free”) education equipped a free citizen for participation and contribution in civic matters. (grammar, logic and rhetoric) and quadrivium (arithmetic, geometry, music and astronomy.) In the mid-1980’s, school districts across New York State developed mission statements and most included in some form the idea that students would “become confident, competent contributing citizens with a lifelong thirst for learning.” In the move from classical education to progressive education as well as in the move from mission to reform, the message is similar. Replace sound reasoning and rhetoric with dutiful workers and tax payers. Read the following words and consider who authored it. Its source will be revealed after the paragraph. “In our dreams, we have limitless resources and the people yield themselves with perfect docility to our molding hands. The present education conventions fade from their minds, and unhampered by tradition, we work our own good will upon a grateful and responsive rural folk. We shall not try to make these people or any of their children into philosophers or men of learning or men of science. We have not to raise up from among them authors, editors, poets or men of letters. We shall not search for embryo great artists, painters, musicians nor lawyers, doctors, preachers, politicians, statesmen, of whom we have an ample supply…The task we set before ourselves is very simple as well as a very beautiful one, to train these people as we find them to a perfectly ideal life just where they are. So we will organize our children and teach them to do in a perfect way the things their fathers and mothers are doing in an imperfect way, in the homes, in the shops and on the farm.”10 The General Education Board, founded by John D. Hi Everyone, as I am getting this article together for the June Update, I continue to realize the importance of prayer. Our prayers for one another pave the way for the miraculous work of the Holy Spirit to manifest in our lives! Partnering together in prayer is vital for the times we are living in and coming into. The Apostle Paul was a committed man of prayer. He mentions prayer in all his writings, except for the book of Titus, where he starts with a prayer of blessing. In fact he begged the churches to pray for him because he knew he couldn’t fulfill God’s Will apart from a prayer partnership with the church. He also knew Heaven released the Holy Spirit when God’s people partner in prayer. We must realize the same for our own lives, we’re no different. When we come together in agreement praying in unity in God’s Love, His Will and His Power we become a “symphony” touching the Kingdom of God. In Matthew 18:19 Jesus states, “Again, I say to you that if two of you agree on earth concerning anything that they ask, it will be done for them by My Father in heaven.” The Greek word for agree is sumphoneo. The word “symphony” comes from this word. In verse 20, Jesus goes onto say, “For where two or three are gathered together in My name, I am there in the midst of them.” We have a promise from the Lord that if we gather together in His name, HE will be in the midst of us. This summer don’t make prayer the last resort to “life problems”. Let’s determine to be proactive in our private and corporate prayer time. The “symphony” of prayers that have “gone up to the Lord” on Nan’s behalf, have sustained and encouraged her beyond words. LEARNING OBEDIENCE THROUGH LONGSUFFERING
W
hen we encounter various trials and tribulations, we have two choices we can make. We can either doubt the Lords Love and provision, which leads to personal confusion and spiritual devastation, or we can unconditionally trust and obey Him to an even greater degree. Our obedience shows the Lord that we trust Him. In other words, by doing in action what He has asked, even though we might not feel like it, we show our absolute reliance upon Him. I remember as a young Christian, hearing about all the Old Testament saints and how it was only after they took a step of obedience, that the Lord would manifest Himself to them. And, because they unconditionally obeyed Him, they were able to go on and do incredible things for Him.

Did they always "feel like’’ doing what He asked of them? I certainly don’t think so. I don’t think Abraham “felt like’’ sacrificing his only son (Genesis 22). I don’t think Moses “felt like’’ leaving his family and fleeing into the wilderness. And, I don’t think Joseph “wanted to’’ serve in Potiphar’s house or be in prison for years. No, all of these men chose to do these things purely out of obedience! And, because they did, Our obedience God manifested Himself to them. Therefore, shows the Lord obedience always comes before sight. Only after we take that step of obedience will the that we trust Lord reveal Himself to us. Him.

Consequently, the response that God desires when a trial or tragedy hits is for us to unconditionally trust Him enough to obey Him. No matter what we see happening or how we feel, we must unreservedly trust His Love and take that obedient step, knowing that somehow and someway He will use our situation for our good and His glory. To obey God simply means to set aside and relinquish what we think, what we want and what pleases us; and, by faith choose to do whatever He has asked. I’ve learned the hard way that obedience is the only answer. I’ve learned to obey God even when it’s the last thing in the world that I want to do. I have tried all the other ways and obedience truly is the only way that works. I’ve learned that I must unequivocally obey, because only then will God be free to work out the circumstances in my life according to His will. Until I choose to obey, those circumstances are still my responsibility. However once I choose to relinquish myself over to Him, those circumstances then become His responsibility.
An Example: Raw Eggs Here’s a silly, but graphic, personal example: Many years ago, Chuck and I had an evening planned at the Music Center in Los Angeles with some very important business friends who were nonbelievers. Because we lived in Orange County and it was at least an hours drive to Los Angeles, we had to pick up these friends by five o’clock in order to make dinner on time. As it happened, that day was my carpool day for Michelle, she was probably around 6 at the time. I figured if I got all the girls home by 3:30 pm, I’d still have plenty of time to get dressed and pick up our friends by five. That afternoon, however, one of the little girls in the carpool smashed her finger in the car door as she was getting in. We had to rush her back into school, soak her finger, call her mother and do some TLC (tender loving care). I lost half an hour there. 24

When Michelle and I finally got home, I noticed a horrible smell coming from the back of the car. It turned out to be one of the little girls carton of spoiled milk that had spilled. Since this was the car I was using that evening, I needed to do an extra special job of cleaning up the mess so it wouldn’t stink. I lost another 15 minutes there. I think the Lysol smell after cleaning it was probably worse than that of the spoiled milk! When I finished with the car, I rushed into the house to make a soufflé. I was hosting a luncheon the next day for twelve women, and I needed to make some last-minute preparations. The soufflé needed to be made a day in advance in order to sit in the refrigerator overnight. I had one special pan that I used to make a soufflé; none of my other pans worked. For some reason, that day I couldn’t find it. After spending ten anxious minutes opening and shutting all the cupboards in my kitchen, trying to find my pan, I remembered we had lent our house to some people over Christmas. I thought perhaps by mistake they had taken it home. So I called, and after several minutes of chit chat, the wife verified that, yes, she had my pan. She said she could return it the next day. “No, thank you,’’ I said, “That’s too late; I need it now. Thank you anyway.’’ By now it was 4:15 p.m.! I wasn’t dressed, the soufflé wasn’t made, the kids weren’t fed, and I was beginning to get a little panicked. I took out another pan, threw in all the ingredients and tried to stir. But the bowl was too small and I couldn't mix it properly. In desperation, I threw the whole mixture (a quart of milk, a dozen eggs, mustard, Worcester-shire sauce, etc.) into my new Cuisinart, not realizing that liquids can’t go above the two-inch tube in the center or they will overflow. And, that’s exactly what happened! Twelve raw eggs and one quart of milk began to ooze out all over the counter, down the sides of the cabinets, into the drawers, down my legs, into my shoes, and onto the floor. By this time I was totally out of control! I began to scream, kick, and yell. Have you ever been there? Can you identify? God gently tapped me on the shoulder and asked, “Nancy, will you choose right now to obey Me? Do you love Me that much?’’ God wanted me to choose, at that very moment, to relinquish my anger, my frustration, and my anxiety to Him, and not allow those wild emotions to direct my actions anymore. Do you know how hard it is, in the middle of a “fit’’ to stop, turn around, and choose to act in a calm manner? It’s impossible; its totally supernatural! But, as I have said, I have learned over all these years that I have been a Christian, that no other way works. I literally have tried every other way possible and none works. So out loud, almost crying, right there in the middle of the egg yolks, I made that commitment to God that I would obey Him. Now I certainly didn’t feel like it; it was totally a faith choice, a non-feeling choice. I consciously relinquished my anger, my frustrations, and all of my distraught feelings. I confessed that they were obviously not of faith and were therefore sin. And I asked Him to purge them from me. In other words, I barred myself from following my unruly feelings by determining not to give in to them; instead, giving them to God and doing what He was asking me to do. Then I asked God to help

me get ready on time, to pick up our friends by five, and be a genuine representation of Him that evening. God is so faithful. Grandma arrived to take care of the kids, which left me free to run upstairs and find a perfect outfit to wear. I jumped in the shower and did what I could with my disheveled hair. I was only 15 minutes late picking those people up that night, and yet we were right on time for the dinner and the show in Los Angeles! The best part of the whole evening was experiencing God's Love, not only for me personally, but flowing through me that night to our friends. Can you imagine what kind of a Godly representative I would have been had I not made that choice in the kitchen to obey God? I think I fed the ladies sandwiches the next day.
Three Steps of Obedience
Now, since the word “obedience’’ is such a very broad term, let’s narrow it down just a bit. There are three essential parts to obeying God. They are: 1) Out of obedience, we must learn to “love’’ (agapao) Him; 2) Out of obedience, we must learn how to moment-bymoment renew our minds; and 3) Out of obedience, we must learn how to have unshakable faith in all circumstances. Again, at first glance, you might think, “Oh, those are easy! I’m already doing them! What’s so new?’’ I assure you, however, that these principles are not what you might first imagine and they are far from being easy! For example, most of us haven’t the faintest idea of what the Bible really means when it says we are “to love God’’. Most of us think that simply means “affection’’ love. But nothing could be further from the truth. And renewing our minds is far more than what one might first expect. Did you know the battle for our lives is really waged in our minds and if we don’t learn how to renew them daily, the enemy will end up in control? And finally, naked faith is not only trusting what God does through us, its also trusting what He does towards us. VOLUME 25 | ISSUE 6 |

The question is: How do we do this? How do we never give up, so that He will be with us, help us and uphold us?
Longsuffering The Biblical answer is by learning longsuffering. And, believe it or not, longsuffering is a fruit of the Spirit. Galatians 5:22 lists it as number four on a list of 9! Now, all of us yearn for the fruit of love, joy, peace, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness and temperance, but who on earth wants to learn “longsuffering” or patient enduring? No, thank you! And yet, God says longsuffering is a part of His character, a part of His image and a part of His nature. Therefore it’s something He wants us all to learn. Paul tells us in 1 Timothy 1:16 that he, himself, is a perfect pattern or model of Christ’s longsuffering. He says that since Christ patiently endured his (Paul’s) sinful ways, we must remember this example and patiently endure others’ sinful ways. Longsuffering simply means “suffering that seems to last forever.” But please hear this: Longsuffering is always associated with hope and mercy. Therefore, it is the opposite of despair, discouragement and depression. 1 Thessalonians 1:3 confirms this: “...remembering without ceasing your work of faith, labor of love and patience of hope [longsuffering] in our Lord Jesus Christ...” Another definition of longsuffering that I really like is: believing all things, hoping all things and enduring all things. Longsuffering here describes someone who continually puts all unfulfilled hopes, dreams and visions at the foot of the Cross and never lets go, never gives in and never gives up! Longsuffering is simply love that endures all circumstances. Are you willing to learn this kind of love? “Though He were a Son, yet learned He obedience by the things which He suffered.’’ (Hebrews 5:8) “Never Give Up” a great study for the summer months. The Vision For many years, Chuck and Nancy Missler had a vision to establish their ministry base in New Zealand. After many visits to the Emerald Islands of the South Pacific, they finally found what they were looking for. Chuck explained, “Within five minutes of walking onto the grounds of The River Lodge we just knew this was the place that God had for us.” The River Lodge1 was purchased in 2010 and the Misslers moved from Idaho to their new home on the grounds of the lodge. Although the lodge came as an already operating corporate retreat business, Nancy Missler expressed her vision that it become “The L’abri2 of the South Pacific.” L’abri is an organization established at the end of World War II by Francis and Edith Schaeffer3 in Switzerland as a place of rest, study and exploring the Christian faith. The Launch In 2013, the Residential Study Programme (RSP) was launched at The River Lodge in Reporoa, on the North Island of New Zealand. The lodge offers a comfortable dining/lounge area, conference facilities, high definition video and audio recording and streaming facilities, site-wide ultra-fast wifi, 18 large bedrooms with private en suite, and beautiful 40-plus acre grounds all situated alongside the majestic Waikato River. Its location became the inspiration for Nancy to liken it as “the perfect Psalm 23 environment.” “The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.”4 Utilizing the Koinonia Institute’s5 online classes, the resident students not only had access to the existing guided courses available through the institute but pioneered the use of KI Self-Paced courses. The Experience Chuck Missler will often end his public presentations by asking, “Have you discovered your calling?” only to then then ask, “What are you doing about it?” The basic objective of this programme is the “equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ”6 by providing a residential environment for rest, repose and refreshment through Bible study and fellowship with other like-minded Christians. Over the last 20+ years, Koinonia House has produced its flagship broadcast, 66/40, which has aired on radio stations all over the world. 66/40 has long been an outlet for Bible study, and to broadcast our latest content. As of the 18th of May, 2015, the 66/40 Radio has been simplified and explained in a simple but exciting way. A brand new, 27 min program with over 25 minutes of pure Bible study will be the format going forward. That’s right, ONLY Bible study. So what happened to the PodCast? 66/40, as a podcast, has also been changed. We will no longer be offering 66/40 as a Podcast with an historical archive. Instead, we have created a listen again service online. This new service does not require each episode to be downloaded prior to playing. We will run a one week, rolling backlog of episodes.
